Description of the location Note- all of the events and descriptions take place in a futuristic, post-nuclear war era

in the year 2281 The area where I will be spending most of my time is Camp McCarran. Camp McCarran is a location in the Mojave Desert which serves as a major New California Republic (NCR) military base in the Mojave Wasteland. It is considered only a close second to Hoover Dam in its strategic importance. It is located in the pre-War McCarran International Airport outside of New Vegas. Camp McCarran is the largest New California Republic base in the New Vegas area and serves as the headquarters for NCR military operations in the Mojave region. The airport is mostly intact, having only suffered damage from lack of repair. The NCR has converted several of the guard posts into sniper nests, and the parking lot in the center into a barracks with sleeping, medical, supply storage, office, mess hall and recreation tents set up as well as firing ranges.
Comment [RAM1]: You should also think about adding a piece of advice about the gamer playing the character?

Comment [Z2]: Maybe add description of the surrounding area i.e. New Vegas, being that that is the only populated area around for miles

250 words Within the site I am observing, many behaviors are deemed unacceptable. Since my site is a regiment of a form of video game military they all act nearly identical. Much of what I expect to see should be somewhere in the neighborhood of a bunch of hard-ass military snipers that dont want to waste their time dealing with anything other than what they have been paid to deal with. Acceptable behavior would include uniforms matching amongst the regiment a commanding officer present. Certain artifacts I am guaranteed to find are uniforms, weapons (sniper rifles), this particular regiment is marked by the beret they wear and the crest it bears. Actors are going to almost be obvious not only are these people identified by rank they all have a specific job. With reference to specifically a sniper regiment there are two types of soldiers that coexist as a team, spotter and shooter. The spotter's job is to give judgment on nearby targets and to mark enemy targets for the shooter. The shooters job is essentially to pull the trigger after confirmation has been given. But the shooter can also interject and make corrections themselves. Ultimately though, two makes a team. The job of the commander would be to receive and issue orders to his regiment. The group I am focusing on in particular consists of five members; one Commander along with two teams of spotter and shooter.

Comment [Z3]: Mention desertion and its potential consequences

Comment [RAM4]: Explain a little bit what this means.

Actors Lieutenant Gorobets- Gorobets is a competent NCR trooper in charge of 1st Recon Alpha Team deployed in the Mojave. He is a tough, charismatic leader and apparently, the only one in the team without a traumatizing experience under his belt. Sergeant Bitter-Root- He is very unfriendly and does not like to talk; however, if told this, he says that he doesn't "mean anything by it", and that it's only his nature. His bitterness comes from his tragic past which he tells to the player. Corporal Sterling- Corporal Sterling is a soldier dedicated to the NCR. He was, at one point, a Ranger, until he was captured by Legion slavers. Under their brutal incarceration, he was viciously tortured and maimed, with his captors severely mutilating both his hands and feet. Unable to continue working due to his grievous injuries, he was discharged. Lieutenant Gorobets requested that Sterling be transferred to 1st Recon, believing that he can still be an asset to the NCR as a sharpshooter. Corporal Betsy- Betsy is part of the 1st Recon. She is in charge of training 10 of Spades and getting him some experience within the 1st Recon. 10 of Spades- 10 of Spades is a rookie member of the NCR's 1st Recon team with a bad stuttering problem. Artifacts The Hunting Rifle- this is a very powerful .308 caliber rifle, given to each member of 1st Recon. Because of their job as snipers, it should be relatively obvious why they each need high power rifles The Beret- this beret in particular is signifying of a 1st Recon soldier. The crest is bears is a skull on top of crossed rifles with the accompanying phrase "The Last Thing You Never See" The Uniform- their uniforms and armor are specific for their group for an unannounced reason. But the obvious thing about theirs in particular is that it is made to better suit a sniper. Literacy Practices I couldnt narrow down and solid examples of literacy practices among this group because they simply dont intermingle that often. The only practice I could relate to them would be the chain of command. One which not only they must obey but one that is levied out to the NCR as a whole.

Comment [Z5]: Very good description, maybe elaborate more on some of the other traumatizing experiences they went through

Comment [Z6]: Potential artifact: collective disdain for Legion

Comment [Z7]: Describe how these are different from regular NCR uniforms

Observation 1/ Interview w/ Bitter-Root What happened to your parents?

Comment [RAM8]: I guess im just a little confused on the game. So maybe put a note in right here and explain if this is an online game or are you playing the computer? Comment [RAM9]: Put a note here explaining that this interview was taking place in the game and how you were able to interview him.

They're deceased, killed during the incident at Bitter Springs (Bitter Springs Massacre). Best thing that ever happened to him (great resentment towards his parents) How did you get your name? In The Khans, when you come of age you receive a "beat down" as a rite of passage. Being too young to receive his beat down and having lived through the massacre at Bitter Springs he saw fit to give himself a new name, the only thing he got, or ever wanted from The Khans. How did you survive the massacre? Claims he "just got lucky" after the massacre he was brought to the captain in charge, Dhatri, who raised him after feeling guilty for killing his parents. BitterRoot told Dhatri that he did him a service in killing his parents. (After talking for a while I convinced him to tell me more about the massacre). When he went to the NCR after the battle the blood he was covered in wasnt all his, and he said he had scores of his own to settle. Deeper ones than the NCR ever could. How long have you been with first recon? Doesnt keep careful track of time. Likes to focus on what's happening right now. He says that lingering on the past is a good way to lose sight of the present, and a good way to miss a mark. Is it allowed for Major Dhatri, your father, to also be you commanding officer? he isn't his real father. After the battle at Bitter Springs, the once Captain Dhatri "adopted" Bitter-Root and helped raise him. Also put him into 1st Recon because of his recognizable skill. Observation 2 These observations were done between 1:00 pm and 1:30 (Note appx. 2-3 seconds equals 1 minute in-game ) 1:01- Upon first arrival at Camp McCarran there are a lot fewer troops than I expected for military headquarters 1:05- searching the burnt out airport for 1st Recon, their location can change with each visit to the camp 1:13- the base is incredibly large and it took some time to locate all the members of 1st Recon, they are all residing in a single tent 1:17- a few show a complacent attitude when approached. 1:20- they all seem to mind their own business. They dont intermingle, all ive seen is gradual moving and walking from one spot to the next. 1:22- Corporal Betsy steps outside for a smoke, showing they have some "consideration" for their squad members within the tent

1:24- a few have walked by a table in the middle of the tent area that has a coffee machine and several scattered coffee mugs. They stop near the table and pick up food items and such, that have most likely just been left lying around. 1:28- out of curiosity I placed a few items of my own on the table (i.e. stimpaks, food items, RadAway, and Med-X) and they, like before, walk by and pick up these items. Observation 3

These observations take place between 5:00 and 5:30 5:06- After completing a basic side quest to help 1st Recon, they now talk more to me and I am able to get more social response from each member. 5:10- After talking to Corporal Betsy, I found out that after her extensive trauma she received from an incident with Cook-Cook she may be a "weak link" in the team 5:13- I talked to Lt. Gorobets, and he asked me to help convince Corporal Betsy to seek medical treatment for her trauma. 5:14- talking to Betsy, I have to capability to convince her to get treatment and I gain praise for helping the team. 5:16- 1st Recon is being reassigned to Camp Forlorn Hope as aid to their significant loss against the legion. 5:19- I followed 1st Recon to their new station and they seem to be just as content here as they were at McCarran. 5:23- there was an attack on the camp soon after I arrived 5:25- the attack is over and everyone is okay, I helped during the attack and noticed that I was the only one out in the field, attacking the enemy head on. The rest of the squad was back up on the ridge inside the camp, picking off attackers easily 5:27- 1st recon seems to be fully settled in at Camp forlorn Hope. The members are scattered throughout the camp, and a few are up in the snipers nests on the hills surrounding the camp. Interview questions
Comment [RAM10]: Put a note here also saying who Oscar Reyes is and why you chose to interview him.

Answered by: Oscar Reyes 1. What do you feel is the social status of the NCR First Recon regiment amongst the NCR rankings. How is this substantial? -Higher up, a title to be upheld, more of a segwayed part of NCR operation as a whole. They are de humanized, against morality. Boone and others, have moral strength to do what is asked of them

2. Do you feel there is any known comparison to First Recon pertaining to either opposition or ally? -The best representation would be the higher legionaries (Lanius is a prime example). The legion is much more without morals, they have next to none, they are also slavers. 3. Who heads the entire regiment of First Recon? And in your opinion do they represent a "decent" cause? -Lt. Hayes; Yes, apart from having more ethical state of mind, the NCR wants to unite the Mojave. When you are out on your own you are observed by both the NCR and the Legion. First Recon works as a unit to better everything they possibly can. 4. Do you agree with the selection process? And should there be additional training involved? -Yes there should be a revision; although you need to get things done with a unit like First Recon. Yes additional training is needed on top of the skills proven to the recruiter. 5. How can such opposing personalities and character types join to create such a coherent unit? -Because above all else they have an exact goal in mind in order to achieve their goal, all differences aside they act as brothers in arms and that outweighs all else
