Halloween
Halloween began over 2000 years ago in Ireland, France, and England as a celebration for the Celts to mark the beginning of winter. It was on ctober !"st that the #ord of the $ead wo%ld allow the dead to ret%rn to earth from the netherworld. &he h%mans dressed in skins of animals to 'rotect themselves from these other worldly creat%res. &wo tho%sand years later, Halloween is a favorite holiday among American children. &his sho%ld come as no s%r'rise since it is a holiday that combines two things that children love( dressing %' and eating candy) n Halloween, yo% will hear *&rick+or+treat* everywhere. Children dress in cost%me and head down the streets as soon as it gets dark. ,mall+brained goblins and shar'+witted ghosts wonder aro%nd the streets and demand candy from the neighbors. -ot everyone chooses a scary cost%me. yo% might see a silver+eyed 'rincess, ,%'erman, a movie star or a hi''ie. How do they know which ho%ses to go to/ Another rit%al of Halloween is to b%y a '%m'kin, hollow it o%t, and carve a scary face on the front. 0ith a candle in the center, these '%m'kins are transformed into 1ack 2#anterns that are 'laced on front 'orches or in windows. For e5am'le, the fr%it of the '%m'kin can be %sed to make 4%m'kin 4ie, and the seeds can be dried and toasted as a snack. Halloween is a holiday that is en6oyed by 'eo'le of all ages. 7any ad%lts go to cost%me 'arties and balls and rent elaborate o%tfits. 0hile the history is not often disc%ssed, 'eo'le are generally aware that this 'agan holiday signals the beginning of the long, cold winter. 3%t it is easy for children to forget the %'coming months of cold and gloomy weather when they ret%rn home with a bag f%ll of every 'ossible *treat.*
