ThisGuidehasbeenproducedbytheHigherEducationAcademyEngineering SubjectCentretoprovideamoreinformedbaseforengineeringacademicsto engagewiththeirstudentswhoareseekingindustrialplacementaspartoftheir programmeofstudies. TheGuidehasitsoriginsintheEducationalQualityinPlacementsinEngineering (EQUIPE)Project,identifyinggoodpracticesinengineeringindustrialplacements.It wasestablishedasaconsortiumbasedprojectledbyLoughboroughUniversityand wasmanagedinconjunctionwiththeUniversityofBath,AstonUniversityandthe UniversityofSurrey.TheinitiativewasalsosupportedbyICI,BPAmoco,Weetabix, IChemE,EngineeringCouncilUKandASET. Placementsshouldmeettheexpectationsofstudentsbybeingsufficientlychallengingand offeringappropriateexposuretoengineeringplant,people,processes,functionsand products.

Theplacementtutorneedstounderstandtheplacementonofferanddecidewhetherornotitwould beappropriateforastudent.Thinkabout: Theworkingenvironment:Studentsonplacementhaveemployeestatusandaretreatedby companiesasanormalemployeeasregardspayetc. However,thestudentisstillregisteredatthe universityandtheuniversityhasadutyofcare.Youmustensurethatthestudentisplacedinasafe environment(seeBriefingPaper4)anddoesnotsufferunlawfuldiscriminationofanykind. Thekindofsupportgivenbythecompanytothestudent:thiswillimpactontheeducational qualityoftheplacement.Studentsneedtoworkalongsidesupportivepeoplewithwhomtheycan discusstheirwork. Thesuitabilityoftheworkanditsrelevancetothestudentsstudies. TheapprovalprocedureforplacementsbeginswiththePlacementHealthandSafetyChecklist(see below). Thisshouldbesenttoeveryplacementemployer,everyyear.Approvalwillnormallybegivenifthe employeranswersYes'toeveryquestionotherwisetheuniversityoritsagentshouldinvestigate. ThiscasestudyisfromJuneCrabtree,FIChemE,PrincipalProcessEngineer,BNFLEngineering. BNFLoffersover50placementseveryyearacrossthewholecompany.Thefollowingdescribesthe experiencegainedintheengineeringarmofthecompany: Theplacementsaredesignprojectbasedandstudentsundertakerealwork.Thestudentsaretreated asgraduatesandgooneinhousetrainingcourseasappropriate.
