organization last year called
Secret Elves. I started this
organization because my
son has a chronic severe
bleeding disorder called
Hemophilia and Type 1
Diabetes. He was born with
Hemophilia and diagnosed
with diabetes in 2009. Since
he was a baby I wanted to
do something to give back.
Some things we do and will
do:
Collect toys for Children's
Healthcare of Atlanta.
Do fundraisers to collect
money for the organization.
With the money we raise
we send money to find a
cure for both Hemophilia
and Type 1 Diabetes.
Right now we are working
on collecting toys for
Children's Healthcare of
Atlanta. We are looking for
churches/businesses that
would like to help with col-
lecting these toys. One drop
off location is Billy's
Country Store on Roanoke
Road.

Thanks to recent laws
passed by the State
General Assembly,
Georgia now has some
of the strongest financial
incentives for land con-
servation in the United
States. Owners of all dif-
ferent types of land -
from family farms to
mountain retreats - are
earning hundreds of
thousands of dollars by
agreeing to protect their
land from development.
The device that landown-
ers are using is known as
a land conservation ease-
ment. In addition to act-
ing as a permanent
agreement that the land
may never be used for
development, the ease-
ment also protects con-
servation values on the
property. Once the
landowner enters into
this contract, a State of
Georgia tax credit is cre-
ated, which can be as

THANKS TROUP COUNTY FOR
ONE GREAT YEAR!
We had many dogs when
we were growing up. We
went to visit someone and
they had a litter of puppies.
They were sooooooooo
cute. Mom said we could
have one. I picked a fuzzy
one. Gary picked out the
ugliest puppy in the bunch.
She was the runt and looked
totally different from the
others. Mom told Gary we
would take that skinny, ugly
puppy home. He named her
Tags. She never did get
pretty but we loved her
more than any other dog we
had.
We would go get a milk
shake on Sundays and Tags
always went with us. Daddy
would buy her an ice cream
cup. She even took trips
with us. We were on our
way once to visit Uncle
Paul in Lyons and we
stopped at Murphys Store
on Whitesville Rd. She got
out and we lost her. Our
family was unusual. When
we were going out of town,
we were wanting to stop to
eat before we got out of
town. Another time we
stopped to have a picnic on
Greenville Rd. Tags wan-
dered off into the woods.
Gary and I begged mom
and dad to find her. They
did both times and many
more times after that.
Tags had a lot of puppies in
her time. The one I remem-
ber most was Dynamite.
That little white dog was
the meanest dog that ever
lived. He didnt chase my
dad or Gary but if I went
outside he would chase me
and bite me. I hated that
dog. Zella, a lady that
worked for us would take a
broom or stick with her
because he would try to bite
her. She would knock the
daylights out of him. He
would chase anyone that
came into the yard, which
was good, unless they were
friends. He met his maker
one day chasing cars. He
loved to sit by the side of
the road and watch for cars
and then take off running
beside it until they out ran
him. One hit him and killed
him. Mom always told me
not to speak evil of the
dead. All I said was he was
a good watch dog. What I
wanted to say was Glory,
Glory I can walk outside
and not worry about getting
bit.

We had many animals
around our house all the
tame ones and there were
wild animals too. My mom
had a friend that lived in
Glenn, Ga. We would visit
her often. Her husband had
a pig farm. Once when we
were visiting they told us
that a panther had attack
and killed some of their
hogs. I ask my mom on the
way home if we had pan-
thers. She said no, they
wouldnt travel that far. I
didnt believe her. There
could be more than one and
they were at our house. I
tried not to go outside for
anything after dark for fear
it would find me.
I usually rode to church on
Wednesday with my cousin.
When I got home that night
the side door was locked. I
guess they forgot I was at
church. I went around the
house to the side porch and
knocked on that door. The
screen door was latched. I
heard something behind me.
I was really scared now.
Almost afraid to turn
around I finally looked over
my shoulder. On top of the
well house was the biggest
black cat I had even seen. I
had to get in the house. I
took my fist and punched
the screen in and unlatched
the door. I slammed the
wooden door behind me and
locked it, why I dont know.
The cat couldnt open the
door. I had to bang and
bang on the other door lead-
ing into the house before
someone opened it for me.
Out of breathe I told my
mom and dad what hap-
pened. Of course they did
not believe me. I didnt
know if I believed myself.
The next morning my dad
went outside to check for
paw prints. He came back
in and told mom she needed
to look at the prints he
found. They were too big to
be a regular cat. It had to be
a very large cat. Several
days later someone in our
area reported seeing a large
black cat. It was put in the
paper. Well mom, how do
you like them apples? Of
course I didnt say that to
her. I would have really
been in trouble.

the clerk to state her occupa-
tion. She hesitated, uncertain
how to classify herself. "What I
mean is," explained the clerk,
"do you have a job, or are you
just a ......? "Of course I have a
job," snapped Emily. "I'm a
Mum." "We don't list 'Mum' as
an occupation...... 'housewife'
covers it," said the clerk
emphatically.
I forgot all about her story until
one day I found myself in the
same situation, this time at our
local police station. The Clerk
was obviously a career woman,
poised, efficient, and possessed
of a high sounding title like,
"Official Interrogator" or
"Town Registrar." "What is
your occupation?" she probed.
What made me say it, I do not
know...
The words simply popped
out."I'm a Research Associate
in the field of Child
Development and Human
Relations." The clerk paused,
pen frozen in midair, and
looked up as though she had
not heard right. I repeated the
title slowly, emphasizing the
most significant words. Then I
stared with wonder as my pro-
nouncement was written in
bold, black ink on the official
questionnaire!
"Might I ask," said the clerk
with new interest, "just what
you do in your field?" Coolly,
without any trace of fluster in
my voice, I heard myself reply,
"I have a continuing pro-
gramme of research, (what
mother doesn't), in the laborato-
ry and in the field, (normally I
would have said indoors and
out). I'm working for my
Masters, (the whole family),
and already have four credits,
(all daughters). Of course, the
job is one of the most demand-
ing in the humanities, (any
mother care to disagree.?) and I
often work 14 hours a day, (24
is more like it). But the job is
more challenging than most
run-of-the-mill careers and the
rewards are more of a satisfac-
tion rather than just money."
There was an increasing note of
respect in the girl's voice as she
completed the form, stood up,
and personally ushered me to
the door.
When I got home, buoyed up
by my glamorous new career, I
was greeted by my lab assis-
tants -ages 10, 7, and 3.
Upstairs, I could hear our new
experimental model, (a 6 month
old baby), in the child-develop-
ment programme, testing out a
new vocal pattern. I felt I had
triumphed over bureaucracy!
And I had gone on the official
records as someone more dis-
tinguished and indispensable to
mankind than "just another
Mum." Motherhood.....What a
glorious career! Especially
when there's a title on the door.

A Mothers Occupation
A man's daughter had asked the
local pastor to come and pray
with her father. When the pastor
arrived, he found the man lying
in bed with his head propped up
on two pillows and an empty
chair beside his bed. The priest
assumed that the old fellow had
been informed of his visit.
"I guess you were expecting me,"
he said.
"No, who are you?"
"I'm the new associate at your
local church," the pastor replied.
"When I saw the empty chair, I
figured you knew I was going to
show up."
"Oh yeah, the chair," said the
bedridden man. "Would you mind
closing the door?"
Puzzled, the pastor shut the door.
"I've never told anyone this, not
even my daughter," said the man.
"But all of my life I have never
known how to pray. At church I
used to hear the pastor talk about
prayer, but it always went right
over my head.."
"I abandoned any attempt at
prayer," the old man continued,
"until one day about four years
ago my best friend said to me,
'Joe, prayer is just a simple mat-
ter of having a conversation with
Jesus. Here's what I suggest. Sit
down on a chair, place an empty
chair in front of you, and in faith
see Jesus on the chair. It's not
spooky because he promised, 'I'll
be with you always.' Then just
speak to him and listen in the
same way you're doing with me
right now."
"So, I tried it and I've liked it so
much that I do it a couple of
hours every day. I'm careful,
though. If my daughter saw me
talking to an empty chair, she'd
either have a nervous breakdown
or send me off to the funny
farm."
The pastor was deeply moved by
the story and encouraged the old
guy to continue on the journey.
Then he prayed with him, and
returned to the church.
Two nights later the daughter
called to tell the pastor that her
daddy had died that afternoon.
"Did he seem to die in peace?" he
asked.
"Yes, when I left the house
around two o'clock, he called me
over to his bedside, told me one
of his corny jokes, and kissed me
on the cheek. When I got back
from the store an hour later, I
found him dead. But there was
something strange, In fact,
beyond strange-kinda weird.
Apparently, just before Daddy
died, he leaned over and rested
his head on a chair beside the
bed."
