ur cover story centers on a man-
ufacturing perspective largely
cued to the changing nature of
global market economy. Although
likely not apparent to the major-
ity of our members or the public, Cadillac
manufacturing provides significant export
muscle. The reach of Cadillac area manu-
facturing is remarkable, but fragile all the
same. When export markets include politi-
cally unstable areas of the world, such as
the Middle East, soft economic markets,
such as Europe, and the reality of devalued
currency it does become a Cadillac issue.
As staff, we are proud the Cadillac Area
Industrial Group annually participates in
the Greater Cadillac Area Expo. The intent
is to display the importance of the products
manufactured in Cadillac. This year that
included more than product, but signage
messaging on available careers, requisite
education needed and export markets (see
story on page 6). Job retention and creation
through economic growth is paramount to
the future sustainability of our region and
the Cadillac area has a proud manufactur-
ing history. With that said, there is positive
overall news as it relates to manufacturing.
Area manufacturing, especially Tier 1 sup-
pliers to the auto industry, have experienced
growth in total sales and job numbers and
commensurate with the overall health of
the auto industry. The further good news,
Cadillac area manufacturing is not entire-
ly dependent on the automotive sector as
defense related industries and other OEMs
have experienced positive trends overall.
We should be reminded that Cadillac did
not lose a major manufacturer through the
worst of the recession. Certainly companies
were impacted, reshaped and not without
desperate stretches during the recession. A
legacy of surviving, and most importantly,
succeeding, is part of the economic fabric
of this area. There is collective optimism for
Cadillac area manufacturing when bench-
marked against darkest years of the eco-
nomic downturn. It takes talent, vision, con-
viction, and leadership to meet the global
economic challenges that many of our man-
ufacturing members faced, but continue to
navigate today.
Lastly, we will not expand the regional
economy without accommodating the need
for all employers to have access to a talent-
ed and reliable workforce. Good jobs exist
today that are unfilled because talent can-
not be located. That is unacceptable. With
that said a top priority for the Cadillac Area
Chamber of Commerce is early childhood
development. Investment in early child-
hood, whether time, resources or a contri-
bution to the Imagination Library greatly
enhances our ability to improve economic
competitiveness. I firmly believe advancing
early childhood will give us an advantage of
growing and retaining local talent going for-
ward (see story on page 4).

Our Leadership Class kicked off their
opening retreat at the Kettunen Center on
September 12th and 13th. Our class consists
of 23 professionals representing 13 different
businesses from around the Cadillac area.
We came together to learn more about our-
selves, our classmates, and the needs of the
very community in which we live and work.
The retreat was jam-packed with amazing
speakers, advice from former class pros, and
teamwork activities.
We immersed ourselves into several team
building exercises, leadership and com-
munication seminars, and problem solv-
ing activities throughout the two day, fun-
filled experience. We worked together as
classmates to build trust and communica-
tion skills as we tackled the outdoor web
obstacle, wire walk, and balancing board.
Chicken baseball and the tennis ball balanc-
ing course were some of the retreats main
recreational highlights.
Along with communication and team
building, our 2013-2014 class had the oppor-
tunity to share a part of who we are with
a memento or story at the retreats Show
and Tell bonfire. After a long day of indoor
training seminars and outdoor obstacle
courses, we got together to learn more about
each other and who we will be sharing this 9
month and beyond experience with.
Day two was filled with more team build-
ing exercises as our class participated in a
canoe race across the lake, a fire building
activity, a scavenger hunt-navigation course
through the woods and ended with a mini
quiz on Cadillac and Michigan history.
Although much of the retreat was filled with
fun bonding experiences, we also explored
this years project options. The opening
retreat was a great snap shot of what we can
expect to accomplish as a team as this years
2013-2014 Leadership Class.
A special thank you to everyone who
helped make this retreat a huge success.

In a few short months, expectations have been
exceeded, but more work still needs to be done to
get the word out about the Imagination Library.
The hope is that both the community and busi-
nesses will benefit when young children who take
advantage of the free book program succeed in
school and into adulthood, and then stay or return
to the area to work and raise their families.
That message was relayed by several educators,
business people and parents during the September
Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce Lecture
Lunch at Baker College. Wexford-Missaukee
Great Start Collaborative Co-Coordinator Niki
Schultz started the event off by talking from the
perspective of a parent. She said the Imagination
Library helps parents engage their children in
each book with helpful tips. She added that since
the book is addressed to the child it adds to the
excitement of getting the book.
Mackinaw Trail Middle School Principal
Jennifer Sck said reading has multiple benefits for children, and
by the time a student reaches school, it is very clear which ones
have been read to and which ones have not. The more parents read
to their children, the more likely they are to read and the better they
do in school, she said. She added it also helps to increase a childs
vocabulary, a lack of which leads to huge learning gaps at kinder-
garten entry.
Kelly Cater works in human resources at Rec Boat Holdings in
Cadillac. She said supporting programs, such as the Imagination
Library, are something that companies should embrace because it
is a resource that doesnt cost a business or its employees a dime.
The Imagination Library was launched in 1996 by country
music star Dolly Parton to benefit children in her home county in
Tennessee. Partons vision was to foster a love of reading among
preschool children and their families by providing them with the
gift of a specially selected book each month.
Local efforts began this past spring as a project of the Cadillac
Area Chamber of Commerce and the Great Start Business
Engagement Committee. The community response has been tre-
mendous, according to Great Start Co-Coordinator, Mike Acosta.
Because of this community support there is no cost to families to
participate. As of this writing over 1100 kids are signed up for the
program.
To be eligible families must live in the Wexford Missaukee
Intermediate School District which includes the Cadillac, Lake City,
Manton, Marion, McBain, Mesick, and Pine River School Districts.
Parents can register their preschool children (birth up to five years
old) by going to www.usa.imaginationlibrary.com and clicking on
Register My Child on the top of the page.
A link to the online registration also can be found at the Wexford-
Missaukee Great Start web page, www.wmgreatstart.org, and
on the groups Facebook page, Wexford Missaukee Manistee
Early Childhood Connection. Or flyers are available at various
locations throughout the area, including libraries, the Family
Resource Center and the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce.
For more assistance email: wmisdimaginationlibrary@gmail.com.
Donations to fund the program may be sent to the CACF, 201 N.

It was only a few short years ago when the out-
look for manufacturing in Cadillac looked bleak.
The auto industry was teetering on collapse as the
U.S. was hit with the Great Recession.
Today, many manufacturers say things have
improved. It is noticeable in the jobs numbers,
which have increased to about 4,000 employed
in the Wexford-Missaukee labor market and with
plans for additional expansion.
But there are still very real concerns about the
future.
Bruce Schafer, Rexair Vice President of
Manufacturing, said that business at the vacuum
manufacturer has been solid but future outlook
looks flat.
The local area has a solid and diversified base,
Schafer said. The area manufacturing can com-
pete with most areas. Complacency must be guard-
ed and enthusiasm for new enterprises should be embraced by local
leadership.
Rec Boat Holdings announced earlier this year a new boat line which
is being built in Cadillac, and hosted dealers from across the coun-
try in October to showcase the new Scarab jet boat brand. Orders for
the new boat are already coming in. But consumers still are keeping
spending down overall.
Discretionary spending remains soft for products like ours, which
are pure luxury items, said Rec Boat Holdings President Roch
Lambert. Since we export a large portion of what we build in Cadillac
(about 45%), we are affected by not only the U.S. situation but also
the global economy. Europe, which is a key market, remains very soft
though there are early signs of improvement there. Australia has been
stable and our most important export market. Canada remains stable
though the weakening of the Canadian dollar could become a short-
term challenge.
The consumer has the money to spend and the banks are starting
to loosen up requirements on credit requests, but there is a discom-
fort on the consumer side that holds them back from committing to
expenses that are viewed as pure luxury, Lambert said.
Thom Eory, Plant Manager at FIAMM in Cadillac, said the economy
has turned the corner and remains stable and the outlook for sales in
2014 looks to be about the same as it was in 2013.
We are very optimistic about the short and long term plans that
we have in place, he said. However, one specific customer has just
announced a production schedule adjustment to a high volume plat-
form that will idle their assembly plant for two weeks within this cal-
endar year. Is this just the start of what we may be seeing or simply an
anomaly? Only time will tell.
In October, Michigan celebrated Global Trade Days as a way to high-
light the impact of selling goods overseas. That impact can be seen
in the greater Cadillac area and has helped many area manufacturers
ride out the Great Recession.
Industry is growing
but needs more momentum
Rec Boat Holding hosted 50 dealers for its North American Dealer Conference, showcasing its new Scarab line. Sales
of the new jet boat line is expected to bring in millions of dollars in revenue to the Cadillac area.

What makes us optimistic is launching into new, more dynamic
segments which will help sustain our base business and add employ-
ment to our base, said Lambert. As a result of a recent expansion, we
expect to increase our workforce by about 30% by the end of next year,
which obviously injects additional money into the local economy. A
significant part of those new jobs come as a result of export revenues
which are a great contributor to local economies as it generates injec-
tion of pure incremental money into the local economy.
To simplify it, money from other countries ends up being spent in
the area through peoples income and incremental purchase of local
supplies to manufacture the exported products. That is a very desir-
able engine for the local economy, Lambert said.
At Rexair, 65 percent of its products are sold overseas, Schafer said,
making the international market critical to future success of Rexair
and the local economy.
International competiveness is a state and national issue, Schafer
said. Two issues drive this competiveness. Energy and social costs.
We need a change in direction for energy self sufficiency. It is
achievable with new technologies. The politics of it need to step aside
and let the markets establish this self sufficiency. In general, the EPA
needs to be reined in.
Another issue facing many area manufacturers is finding a skilled
workforce. Schafer said that a skilled workforce is an important issue
for the area down the road.
Industry can create, innovate, and design anywhere in the world,
he said. In order to build it here we need skill trades. We need to
channel people into this work skill.
The issue of finding skilled workers will be subject of an upcoming
Cadillac Area Business Magazine article.

November/December Healthy Tip:
Flu Season approaching
Each fu season, nearly 111 million workdays are
lost due to the fu. That equals approximately $7
billion per year in sick days and lost productivity.
Sound like a lot? It is! But there are ways you can
keep those losses low-to-nonexistent in the offce.
1. Encourage your employees to get a fu shot.
2. Wash your hands often with soap and water.
3. Have hand sanitizer available in your break rooms.
4. Keep your hands off your face.
5. Eat healthy. This is a no-brainer.
6. Drink lots of water.
7. Exercise.
8. Get a good nights sleep.
9. Smile! People who have a positive attitude actually
stay healthier.
And if you do get sick, stay home.
