The subject of the essay is

"How Should Global Capitalism be Corrected –

Japan’s Role and Mission"

With the emergence of the worldwide financial crisis triggered by the subprime mortgage
problem, the world economy is suffering from an unprecedented slump which is said to occur but
once in 100 years. This leads us to believe there must be some serious defects in Anglo-American
style financial capitalism. If that is indeed the case, finding the way to correct and reform the
system must be an urgent necessity.
With these observations in mind, The Japan Foreign Trade Council (JFTC) decided to adopt
“How Should Global Capitalism be Corrected – Japan’s Role and Mission” as the theme of this
year’s JFTC Essay Competition. JFTC welcomes your active participation in the competition. We
would appreciate it if your essay includes creative and insightful ideas about what Japan, Japanese
corporations including Japanese Shosha (general trading companies) can and should do toward
realizing your vision.
