Material Safety Data Sheet

DMDM Hydantoin
Last Revised: 1/23/13

1. Product Identification
Product Name: DMDM Hydantoin CAS Number(s): 6440-58-0

7. Hazards Identification
Inhalation: May irritate respiratory system Eye Contact: May irritate eyes Skin Contact: May irritate skin

2. Physical and Chemical Properties

Percent Volatile: (by weight) 45 Molecular Weight: 188 Specific Gravity: 1.16 @ 25% Solubility in Water: Soluble in water pH Value: 6.5-7.5 Appearance & Odor: Water white liquid

8. First Aid Measures

Eyes: Flush with water for 15 minutes, if irritation develops, seek medical attention. Skin: Wash with soap and water. If irritation develops, seek medical attention. Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, clear airway and start artificial respiration. If victim is having trouble breathing, administer oxygen or artificial respiration as needed. Get immediate medical attention. Ingestion: If swallowed, give 3-4 glasses of water but do not induce vomiting. If vomiting does occur, give fluids again. Get medical attention to determine whether vomiting or evacuation of stomach is necessary. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious or convulsing person.

3. Stability and Reactivity

Chemical Stability: Stable Incompatibility: Avoid contact with strong oxidizing agents Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur

4. Handling and Storage

Store in a warm warehouse. Avoid storing below 60 Deg F to prevent crystallization. Keep container sealed. Protect from freezing.

9. Fire Fighting Measures

Flash Point: >200 Deg F Extinguishing Media: Water, foam, dry chemical, or carbon dioxide Fire Fighting Procedures: Must wear NIOSH/MSHA approved selfcontained breathing apparatus and protective clothing. Fire and Explosion Hazards: Products of combustion are toxic. At high temperatures, this will release formaldehyde.

5. Accidental Release Measures

Use proper personal protective equipment. Caution, floors may become slippery. Wear appropriate protective equipment and NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator where mists or vapors of unknown concentrations may be generated (self-contained breathing apparatus preferred). Warning! When spilled, and liquid spreads over a large area, irritating levels of gaseous formaldehyde may be released. In such cases, self-contained breathing apparatus should be used. Dike and contain spill with inert material (sand, earth, etc.) and transfer the liquid and soil separately to containers for recovery or disposal. Keep spill out of sewers and open bodies of water.

10. Toxicological Information

Acute Oral LD50: (rat) 3300 Mg/Kg Dermal and Eye Irritation Test: (rabbit) Mild irritant Inhalation LD50: (rat) For about 4 hours > 5 MB/1 nominal concentration. Histologic examination of nasal turbinate and pulmonary organs indicated a total absence of notable pathology.

6. Exposure Controls & Personal Protection

Respiratory Protection: In process where mists or vapors may be generated, a NIOSH/MSHA jointly approved respirator is advised in the absence of proper environmental controls. Eye Protection: Wear chemical splash goggles where there is a potential for eye contact. Use safety glasses with side shields under normal use conditions. Protective Clothing: Rubber or neoprene gloves, when needed, to prevent skin contact. Long sleeves, coveralls or other appropriate clothing, when needed, to prevent skin contact. Engineering Controls: In process where mists or vapors may be generated, proper ventilation must be provided in accordance with good ventilation practices. Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use process enclosure, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to control airborne levels. Other Protective Measures: Eye wash station, safety shower in work area

11. Disposal Considerations

Dispose of in compliance with all federal, state and local laws and regulations. Incineration is the preferred method.
