Daniel Serrano Morales Essay 2 The Female Genital Mutilation must be stopped due to its consequences like illness,

death and psychological problems. Female Genital Mutilation is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as "all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons". This procedure is clearly a violation of the human rights of the women. According to WHO, more than 140 million girls and women worldwide are currently living with the consequences of FGM. It is practiced for many reasons; it is considered a necessary part of raising a girl properly, and a way to prepare her for adulthood and marriage. Also it is practiced due to religious beliefs, but no religious scripts prescribe the practice. Additionally it is associated with cultural ideals of femininity and modesty, people that realize that kind of procedures think that after the removal of these parts the women are clean and beautiful. The consequences of this procedure are divided in short and long terms consequences. Short term consequences include shock from bleeding, pain, stress, hemorrhage, infection and damage of organs. Long term consequences include repeated urinary infection, extremely painful menstruation, difficult child birth and severe pain during intercourse. As a summary, it affects a women sexually, gynecology and psychologically. To find a possible solution for this huge problem is really complicated. First of all, these population need to be educated about the consequences that women are suffering because of that, and also they need to understand that through the practice of it they are violating the human rights of the women. Even there are laws that prohibit people still practice just for culture, religion or custom, but sometimes it is realized due to their lack of information and this is a point in which the organizations against it have to work. As a conclusion, the governments of the places in where FGM exists have to educate people, take more control over it, trying to eliminate it from the world. It sounds impossible but, going step by step it will make change in the life of some women that will be prone to receive it. And also there are foundations as Flower Dessert that provides support and seeks to end this crime by raising public awareness, creating networks, organizing events and educational programs.
