Human Behavior in the Organization: A Survey with regard to Absenteeism

The students of Bicol University, College of Business, Economics and Management of the Department of Accountancy conducted a survey in BS Accountancy III-A to know the reasons why the students are experiencing and struggling to avert absenteeism. Absenteeism as defined by Merriam Webster is a chronic absence as from work or school. It is also the rate of such absence in which not being present or attending. Absenteeism is a hindrance in becoming an effective and efficient employee especially in the workplace but as a student we also encounter this dilemma. This survey aims to find out the reasons and solutions to this predicament. According to the data gathered 41.38% or 12 out of 29 students of BSA III-A has became absent during class hours. 17.24% or 5 out of 29 have never made any absences while 13.80% or 4 out of 29 have committed an absence of two meetings. 10.34% or 4 out of 29 have 3 absences in class and also having the same percentage with more the 5 absences. Only 6.90% or 2 out of 29 had 4 absences in class. It was asked in the survey of the reasons why they are not coming to class and 55.88% or 19 out of 34 answered due to illness. With the same percentage of result of 8.82% or 3 out of 34 their reasons were due to distance of the place, because of early schedule, due to lack of time-management and they woke-up late. 5.88% or 2 out of 34 said it was due to travel time and 2.94% or 1 out of 34 possible answers were from pressure from school and they slept late. The factors that were considered and how it should be addressed were as follows: due to time of rest, studying major subjects, family problems and time management. Students addressed this problem by being health conscious, managing stress properly and some saying by adjusting the early schedule. Questions number 3 asks about how you feel about being absent. A lot of answers were given but most of them felt worried, bothered, bad, disappointed, anxious, guilty, and incomplete. Also some said that they feel ashamed but some answered that they feel alright and even perfect. 100% or 29 out of 29 respondents answered that they are still able to cope up with the lessons missed. While 75.86% or 22 out of 29 have affirmed that their parents know about their absences while 24.14% or 7 out of 29 answered no to this question. Students of BSA III-A suggests a lot of possible ways to avoid the habit of absenteeism most of them answered that health awareness is the key to solve this. Having

34.38% or 11 out of 32 stating that knowledge of being healthy is the answer to this dilemma. 21.86% or 7 out of 32 saying that self-management is the best possible solution. Having the same percentage of 12. 5% or 4 out of 32 answers, it was noted that they should wake-up early, the schedule should be changed and being time conscious were some of the responses raised. Also 3.13% or 1 out of 32 answers said that in order to stop absenteeism we should have proper study habits and gain inspiration. Tally Sheet 1.)
