HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
FACULTY
The establishment of the technical studies, as well as
of mechanical engineering, were laid by opening the Higher
Engineering School in Prishtina, in October 20, 1961. There
were established three branches: Mechanical Engineering,
Elektrotechnical Engineering, and Civil Engineering.
After four years of successful work in this school, it
started the establishment procedure of Prishtina Technical
Faculty. This was done because of the great necessities of
time and the importance of personnel education in
different profiles of engineering for faster development of
Kosovas industry. Technical Faculty was established in
November 9, 1965 and the only section of it was civil
engineering. In this faculty the teaching started in
December 10, 1965, with 138 registered students in the
first year of studies that were taught by five teachers and
five assistants. Instructions were held in two classrooms
with 40 seats and an amphitheatre of 202 seats. In October
30, 1967 Technical Faculty Council decided to establish the
branches of Mechanical Engineering and Elektrotechnical
Engineering too, so the instructions were held in a building
of military quarters.
The history of development of academic activity in
Mechanical Engineering Faculty is divided into six periods
and they are characterized with some specifications:
The first phase (1967-1979) includes the
constituent period up to 1979, when Technical
Faculty was transformed into The Basic
Organization of Associated Labor. (B.O.A.L).
-

The second phase (1979-1988) includes

the period from the constitution of Mechanical
6

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering - Prishtin

Engineering BOAL up to the complete

independence and the division of the Technical
Faculty into these ones as well as Mechanical
Engineering.
-

The third phase of development (19881991) starts from the independence of this
faculty and lasts up to 1991, when University
buildings were occupied by Serbian Police
Forces.

The fourth phase is that one that began

since 1991, when by the decision of the
Authorities of the Republic of Kosova, and The
University of Prishtina, there were organized
instructions in private houses and some other
places.

The fifth phase is that one when we came

back from private houses to our legal buildings
on 18.05.1998.

The sixth phase is the phase of curriculum

transformation from the present teaching
system into the new system based on Bologna
Declaration.

At the very beginning the Technical Faculty

possessed the only buildings that was inherited from the
Higher Technical School. This area had four adopted
premises of previous military barracks, of an area of 4.994.
m. In 1970 these premises were expanded with 1.397.m,
by building two more installed barracks, while in 1974
premises were expanded for more 800 m that were built
in the fourth floor of the Law Faculty.
During this time, because of the lack of Albanian
University Teachers, instructions were held into Serbo7

Curriculum Bachelor 2001

Croatian and, only some of the exercises were held into

Albanian.
The engagement of the teachers from respective
faculties of Belgrade, Nish, Zagreb and Skopje solved the
lack of the teaching staff. Up to 1970 Technical Faculty of
Prishtina was part of the Belgrade University.
Along with foreign teaching staff, there were
engaged some Kosovar Albanian teachers for lectures and
exercises that were graduated in the Universities of the
Former Yugoslavia, and together with some University
Teachers from Albania were a corner stone for a great
success in facing the necessities of time and for providing
the Albanian teaching staff.
There have to be mentioned that among the first
Albanian Teaching Staff and one of the veterans of the
engineering education in Kosova was our respectful
pedagogue, professor Nexhmedin Jagxhiu. He was one of
the first Albanian Teachers that was engaged for
mechanical engineering professional subjects. By the time
the teaching staff was fulfilled as well as with recently
graduated students of this Faculty.
Also during this period it was confirmed the creation
of the teaching staff. So, some of them defended their
Master papers as for example: Nexhat Boshnjaku, Qemal
Buinca, Sadri Shkodra, Ahmet Geca, while Nexhat
Boshnjaku
defended his doctoral dissertation as well.
Some of the above-mentioned teachers were specialized in
some other University centers, mostly in Soviet Union and
DR of Germany.
It must be especially stressed that in 1970 when the
University of Prishtina was established along with the
cooperation of the above- mentioned Faculties it was
developed a very fruitful cooperation with Tirana State
University too. This cooperation with a higher level of
8

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering - Prishtin

intensity was developed during the school year 1971-1972

and 1972-1973 and this has continued up to the outbreak
of the students demonstrations in 1981. In this period
when it was felt a lack of teaching staff in Albanian, the
brotherly help from the pedagogues of National Republic of
Albania was of a great necessity for giving lectures and
having exams. In this Faculty, the pedagogues from
Albania have given the lectures as follows: Adnan Qatipi
(Weightlifting and transportation Machines); Bashkim
Baholli (Engineering Materials); Burhan Jukniu (Steam
Boilers and Thermo-energetic Equipments); Fehmi Shehu
(Combustion Engines); Hysen Agolli (Turbo-machines II);
Ismail Demneri (Thermodynamics and Turbo-machines II);
Luan Voshtina (Thermodynamics and Cooling Equipment);
Marenglen Gjonaj (Weightlifting and Transportation
Machines); Pullumb Karaulli (Mechanisms); Ruzhdi Karapici
(Combustion Engines); Tahir Haxhiymeri (Mechanical
Drawing and Mechanical Materials); Thanas Gae
(Mechanics II (Dynamics) and Theory of Oscillations); and
Zyhdi Caslli (The Strength of Materials I & II);.
The University Teachers from Tirana fulfilled the
lack of teaching staff in Albanian Language. Under these
circumstances, the faculty for the first time, since its
establishment has provided teaching in their mother
tongue to the Albanian students, in the first two years of
studies while for the next three years this process was
slower. This faithful cooperation with Tirana University was
interrupted completely after the outbreak of the students
and of Kosova Albanian people demonstrations, during
1981.
Its worth to mention the great contribute of Prof.
Tom Berisha from the Technical Military Academy of
Zagreb, Croatia, who was the lecturer of Subjects of
Mechanic Fluids and Thermodynamics.

Curriculum Bachelor 2001

Great assistance offered also the professors from other

faculties of the University of Prishtina, and the
collaborators from the industry, as well.
In September 21, 1978, the workers of this Faculty
were declared by Referendum about the constitution of the
Organization of Associated Labor of Technical Faculty at
three Basic Organizations of Associated Labor (BOAL):
Mechanical Engineering, Elektrotechnical Engineering and
Civil Engineering together with Architecture. These BOALs
were established at the beginning of 1979. Firstly, it was
established Labor Association that has carried out common
administrative professional works and technical services of
the Labor Organization and of BOAL. This way of
organization was interrupted on 1982 when all the
employed staff has been systemized into a BOAL.
Mechanical Engineering BOAL was established in
February 27, 1979. There were constituted three sections
by statute: Production, Thermo-energetics and Engineering
Design and Mechanism instructions were held only in the
first two ones, while the third section started to function
after the establishment of Mechanical Engineering in 1988.
When the new buildings were constructed,
favorable conditions of educational-scientific activities have
been created.
In fact, since 1978 ,
the construction of the
buildings have started for the necessities of Technical
Faculty of that time. In 1982 we moved to the new building
that was dedicated for Mechanical Engineering Faculty
necessities, with an area of 11,455m. While in January
1985 , the Laboratories of Elektrotechnical Engineering
were opened with an area of 4,205m and of the Civil
Engineering with 5,650m. All these buildings were
reconstructed in some periods. They were placed in the
quarter Kodra e Diellit (Sunny Hill), next to the Clinics of

10

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering - Prishtin

Medical Faculty, respectively next to the Prishtina

University Clinical Center, in an area of 16 hectares.
At the beginning, in these buildings, there were
settled three BOALs (Mechanical Engineering Faculty,
Elektrotechnical Engineering Faculty and Civil Engineering
Faculty) and they have shared all these building areas in
three equal parts, whereas Architectural Faculty BOAL was
left in the old buildings of Technical Faculty, in an area of
1,800m.
The entire development by educational-scientific
work was
continuing at quick paces within new
circumstances. Especially, the number of students and
teaching staff was growing, by what it was improved to a
great extent, the qualified and national structure, to the
advantage of Kosova Albanians. As for example, while in
the academic year 1978-1979 there were 16 teachers and
other research fellows who have had full-time job, (among
11 Albanians there were two assistant professors, a
lecturer and eight assistants), during 1987-1988 there
were 56 (38 of them Albanians), 1 full professor, 1
associate professor, 6 assistant professors (four of them
Albanians), 25 lecturers (16 of them Albanians) and 23
research fellows (16 Albanians). In addition to this in the
teaching process, were engaged 29 other teachers and
research fellows with a part time job, that were from other
faculties and from some economic organizations.
There were prepared and published a great number
of university books, mimeo-graphical notes, authorized
selected exercises and lectures by what it was fulfilled the
gap in the educational process and that have been
experienced by Albanian students.
In September 28, 1988., The Technical Faculty was
transformed for the second time in its history and it was
divorced in three independent faculties; Mechanical
Engineering Faculty, Elektrotechnical Engineering Faculty
