1Preamble
Neuroscientistsareapplyingnewtechnologiestoacquireandanalyzelargedatasets,aswellasamassingknowledge ofneuralcircuitryinavarietyofbrainareas.Asaconsequencetheneedforquantitativemodelstounderstandthe greatcomplexitiesofneurobiologicalsystemshasneverbeengreater,andquantitativemethodsarecentrally importantinthefieldofneuroscience.Insomerespects,neurosciencehashistoricallybeenaheadofmuchofbiology inadoptingandvaluingquantitativeapproaches.Therehavebeenimportantadvancesthroughtheuseofquantitative methodsinneurophysiology,andtherehasbeenacontinuingstreamofrelatedworkwithinappliedmathematicsand physics.Morerecently,engineers,computerscientists,andstatisticianshavecontributedtothefield,expanding furtherthedefinitionofcomputationalneuroscience.Nevertheless,thenumberofinvestigatorswiththerequisite skillsandactivelyengagedinthisdomainofresearchisrelativelysmall.Thereisawidelyrecognizedneedfor increasedtrainingintheapplicationofcomputational,mathematical,andstatisticalmethodstobiologyandmedicine, andtoproblemsinneuroscienceinparticular. ThePrograminNeuralComputation(PNC)trainsstudentswithbackgroundsinquantitativedisciplinesinthe growingfieldofcomputationalneuroscienceandalsoprovidesthemtheessentialbackgroundinexperimental neuroscience.ThetrainingenvironmentofthePNCbringsthestrengthsoftheuniqueneurosciencecommunityof bothCarnegieMellonUniversity(CMU)andtheUniversityofPittsburgh(Pitt).ThePNCisadministeredthroughthe CenterfortheNeuralBasisofCognition(CNBC),anintegrativecenterspanningbothCMUandPittandPNCstudents arebyextensionmembersoftheCNBC.WeofferaPh.D.inNeuralComputationandaJointPh.D.inNeural ComputationandStatistics.Inthisdocumentweoutlineboththecourserequirementsandprogrammilestonesthata PNCstudentmustcompleteduringthecourseoftheirPhDtraining.

Theprogramconsistsofthefollowingcoreactivities: Courseworkincomputationalneuroscience,quantitativemethodologiesandexperimentalneuroscience Exposuretoexperimentalapproachesthroughrotationsorthesisresearch Traininginteaching,scientificpresentationsandresponsibleconductofresearch SuccessfuldefenseofaPh.D.Thesis AdditionalsatelliteactivitiesthroughtheCNBCwillalsofosterstudentsprofessionalandscientificdevelopment. Courserequirements ThecourserequirementsforthisprogramincludebutextendwellbeyondthecurriculumrequirementsfortheCNBC certificateprogram.Thecourseworkisdesignedtoensurethatstudentsarewelltrainedinneuroscienceandthat theyalsoreceiveindepthtraininginasetofquantitativeapproachesrelevanttothefieldofcomputational neuroscience.Becauseofdifferencesinbackgroundandeducationalgoals,courserequirementsforeachstudentin theprogramwillbeadaptedtotheirindividualneeds,drawingonthemanycomputerscience,mathematics,and statisticscoursesofferedbothatCMUandPitt. APNCstudentsfirstyearcourseworkisdecidedbythestudentinconsultationwiththestudentsfacultymentorand thefacultysteeringcommittee.TheweekbeforethestartofeachfalltermthefirstyearPNCstudentswillattendan orientationsessionheldbythePNCsteeringcommittee,wherealistingofallPNCrelevantcoursesofferedthatterm wouldbegiven.Inaddition,aftertotheorientationmeeting,thefirstsemestercoursechoicesforeachfirstyear studentwillbedeterminedinconsultation,firstwiththestudentandthestudentsfacultymentor,andthenwithone ofthePNCsteeringcommitteechairs.Typically,studentswilltake23courseseachtermoftheirfirstyear,including atleastonecomputationalneurosciencecourseandtwocoursescoveringexperimentalneuroscience. Bytwoweeksbeforestartoffalltermofastudentssecondyear,thestudentmustsubmitaproposedscheduleof coursework,alongwithastatementfromhisorheradvisorrecommendingapproval.Thisplanwillthenbe consideredbythesteeringcommitteewhichmayapprovethecourseplan,oraskformodifications.Approvalwillbe basedonmeetingprogramexpectationsinthefollowingthreeareas.Itisexpectedthatbytheendofthethirdyearof theprogramallcourseworkwillbecompleted.

Otherfoci,includingbrainimagingandsignalprocessinghavebeendiscussedandmaybeaddedasrecommended coursesets. ProgramMilestones Progressintheprogramistrackedbasedinpartonstudentssuccessfulcompletionofprogrammilestones.A committeeselectedbythestudentandapprovedbytheprogramcodirectorsevaluatestheperformanceon milestones.Failuretopassamilestonewillresultinastudentbeingplacedonprobation.Specificconditionsfor removalofprobationwillbespecifiedbytheprogramcodirectorsalongwithasetofdeadlinesformeetingthese conditions.Failuretomeettheseconditionsbythedeadlinewillresultindismissalfromtheprogram. Firstyearresearchrequirement:Bytheendofthefirstcalendaryearintheprogram,allstudentsarerequiredto completeacomputationalproject.Thisprojectwillbeevaluatedbyacommitteeconsistingofatleastthreefaculty,of whomatleasttwoarePNCtrainingfaculty.Theprojectrequiresthestudenttoidentifyabiologicalproblem, understandthedatacollectionprocess,articulatethegoalsofbuildingamodelorperformingaparticularkindof analysisandimplementthiscomputationalapproach.Insomecasesthisprojectmaybeaprecursortothestudents eventualthesisproject.Thisprojectcannotsubstantiallyoverlapwithaprojectcompletedforaclass,althoughitmay beonthesametopicasaclassproject,providedthatitrepresentsasubstantialextensionofthatwork. Studentsshouldbeginformallydiscussingthisresearchprojectnolaterthantheendofthespringterm.Initialsteps shouldincludeformingthiscommitteeandorganizingameetingtodiscuss/outlinetheprojectwithyourcommittee. ThemakeupofthiscommitteeshouldbeapprovedbythesteeringcommitteecoChairs.Atthisfirstmeetingthe committeeshouldapprovetheprojectproposalorindicatestepsnecessarytoidentifyanewproject.Then,beforethe startofthefallterm,studentsmustscheduleacommitteemeetingwheretheypresent/defendtheirresults.Students shouldprovidetheircommitteeawrittenreport(~610pages,oftext,plusfigures)detailingtheworkperformedat leastthreedaysbeforethemeeting.Theinitialpartofthismeetinginvolvesa30minutepresentationbythestudent, whichisopentothepublic.Thiswillbefollowedbyameetingwiththecommitteeandthestudent,duringwhichthe committeewillaskdetailedquestionsaboutthework.Basedonthismeeting,thecommitteewillevaluatethe studentsworkandwilldecidewhetherastudentpasses,failsorneedstorevisetheproject,subjecttoreevaluation. Allrevisionsandtheevaluationoftheserevisionsmustbecompletedwithinonemonthoftheexam.Questionsabout thedesiredformatofthewrittendocumentorthecontentofthepresentationshouldberaisedbythestudentwith committeememberswellbeforetheevaluationmeeting. Secondyearresearchrequirement:Inthesecondyear,studentsareexpectedtoworkonresearchabout1/3of theirtimeduringtheacademicyearandfulltimeduringthesummer.Bytheendofthesecondfullyearinthe programallstudentsarerequiredtocompleteadeepercomputationalproject.Thestudentsworkontheproject shoulddemonstratethatthestudenthas1)theabilitytoanalyzeandinterpretexperimentaldatainaparticulararea 2)theabilitytodevelopandimplementacomputationalapproachincorporatingtherelevantlevelofbiologicaldetail and3)theabilitytoorganize,interpretandpresenttheresultsofthecomputationalwork.Thisprojectshouldbea bodyofworksuitableforpublication.Itisexpectedthatthisworkwillbewrittenupasamanuscriptsuitablefor submissiontoajournalintherelevantfieldandadraftofthismanuscriptmustbesubmittedtothecommitteeatleasta weekinadvanceofthemeeting.Inmostcasesthisprojectwillbeonanarearelatedtothestudentseventualthesis project. Theevaluationofthismilestoneissimilartothatofthefirstyearmilestonedescribedabove.Initialstepsinclude formingthiscommitteeandorganizingameetingtodiscuss/outlinetheprojectwithyourcommittee.Atthisfirst meetingthecommitteeshouldapprovetheprojectproposalorindicatestepsnecessarytoidentifyanewproject. Then,beforethestartofthefallterm,studentsmustscheduleacommitteemeetingatwhichtheywillpresent/defend theirresults.Theinitialpartofthismeetinginvolvesa30minutepresentationbythestudent,whichisopentothe public.Thiswillbefollowedbyameetingwiththecommitteeandthestudent,duringwhichthecommitteewillask detailedquestionsaboutthework.Basedonthismeeting,andthesubmittedmanuscriptdraft,thecommitteewill evaluatethestudentsworkandwilldecidewhetherastudentpasses,failsorneedstorevisetheproject,subjectto reevaluation.Allrevisionsandtheevaluationoftheserevisionsmustbecompletedwithinonemonthoftheexam. Ph.D.Thesisproposal:Requiredcourseworkshouldbecompletedbytheendofthethirdyear.Bythestartofthe fourthyearaPh.D.candidateisrequiredtopresentathesisproposalfirsttohisorherthesiscommitteeandthento theCNBCcommunity.Theproposalshouldinclude:

aclearstatementoftheproposedresearchproblem thesignificanceoftheproposedresearch areviewofrelevantliteraturerelatingtotheproblem areviewofthecandidatesworkleadinguptothethesis atentativescheduleforcompletingthework Advisingonschedulingtheproposal,andguidingintheformationofthedissertationcommittee,isthethesisadvisors responsibility.Thethesiscommitteeshouldbecomposedofatleastfourmembers,oneofwhoisanexternalmember andofwhoatleasttwoarePNCtrainingfaculty.Theexternalmemberistypicallyfromoutsidethetwoparticipating Universities.AllthesiscommitteesaresubjecttoapprovalbythePNCsteeringcommittee. Ph.D.ThesisDefense:Normally,thedissertationiscompletedduringthestudentsfifthyear.Thestudentshouldset upapredefensemeetingwiththeircommitteememberssixmonthspriortotheirdefense.Thefinaldefenseisa publicpresentation,inaccordwiththeCollegeandUniversityrequirementsforthePh.D.Itisthecandidates responsibilitytoensurethattheCollegeandUniversitysguidelinesarefollowedforpublicityofthedefenseandthe availabilityofthethesisdocumentatleasttwoweekspriortothedefense.Notethatthedefensemustbeheldatleast 21daysbeforethedatethedegreeisawarded. CertificationofCompletionoftheRequirementsforGraduation BeforeaPhDtoanindividualstudentmaybegrantedthetwoPNCcodirectorsandaCNBCeducationalprogramstaff membermustsubmitwrittennotificationtotheschoolofgraduatestudiesandtheCNBCstatingthatthestudenthas completedallrequirementsasdescribedinthePNCguidelines.

ProgramMilestones Themilestoneslistedbelowarestatedasrequirements,butsomeflexibilityislikelytobenecessary.Inindividual casesexceptionsmaybegrantedbythePNCsteeringcommitteeandtheStatisticsfaculty.Insuchcasesclear alternativedeadlinesmustbeestablishedandcommunicatedinwritingtothestudent. Firstyearresearchrequirement:Bytheendofthefirstcalendaryearintheprogram,allstudentswillberequired tocompleteadataanalyticproject.Thepurposeoftheprojectistohavethestudentidentifyabiologicalproblem, understandthedatacollectionprocess,articulatethegoalsofbuildingamodelorperformingaparticularkindof analysisandimplementthiscomputationalapproach.Insomecasestheprojectmaybeaprecursortothestudents eventualthesisproject.Bothwrittenandoralsummariesoftheprojectmustbepresented.Theprojectwillbe evaluatedbyacommitteeconsistingofatleastthreefaculty,ofwhomatleasttwoarePNCtrainingfaculty.Students whowishtoenterthejointprogramfromStatisticsaftertheirfirstyearmaybeabletowaivethisrequirementwith thepermissionofthePNCsteeringcommittee. Secondresearchproject:Allstudentswillberequiredtocompleteadeepercomputationalproject.Thestudents workontheprojectshoulddemonstratethatthestudenthas1)theabilitytoanalyzeandinterpretexperimentaldata inaparticulararea2)theabilitytodevelopandimplementacomputationalapproachincorporatingtherelevantlevel ofbiologicaldetailand3)theabilitytoorganize,interpretandpresenttheresultsofthecomputationalwork.This projectshouldbeabodyofworksuitableforpublication.Thisresearchshouldbewrittenupasapapertobe submittedtoajournalingtherelevantfield.Inthesecondyear,studentsareexpectedtoworkonresearchabout1/3 oftheirtimeduringtheacademicyearandfulltimeduringthesummer.Inmostcasesthisprojectwillbeonanarea relatedtothestudentseventualthesisproject,anditshouldbecompletedbytheendofthestudentssecondcalendar yearintheprogram.Inaddition,theresultsoftheprojectwillbepresentedpubliclyintheformofaseminar.This projectwillbeevaluatedbyacommitteeconsistingofatleastthreefacultyofwhomatleasttwoarePNCtraining faculty. StatisticsPreliminaryExams:Bytheendofthethirdfullyearthestudentshouldcompleteandpassthepreliminary examinationsforthePh.D.intheDepartmentofStatistics.NotethattheAdvancedDataAnalysisprojectinStatistics willbethesameasthesecondresearchprojectabove. Ph.D.Thesisproposal:Requiredcourseworkshouldbecompletedbytheendofthethirdyear.Duringthefourth yearaPh.D.candidateshouldpresentathesisproposalfirsttohisorherthesiscommitteeandthentotheCNBCand Statisticscommunity.Thestudentwillhavetwojointadvisors,onefromStatisticsandtheotheraCNBCfaculty memberfromoutsideofStatistics.Athesiscommitteewillbeformedandshouldbecomposedofatleastfour members,oneofwhomisanexternalmember(typicallyfromoutsideCMUandPitt);twomustbePNCtraining faculty;twomustbeStatisticsfaculty;andatleastoneCMUorPittmembermustbefromadisciplineoutsideof statistics.ThethesiscommitteeissubjecttoapprovalbythePNCsteeringcommitteeandtheDepartmentofStatistics faculty. Thethesisproposalshouldinclude:asuccinctsummaryoftheproposedresearchproblem;thesignificanceofthe proposedresearch;areviewofrelevantliteraturerelatingtotheproblem;areviewofthecandidatesworkleadingup tothethesis,includingpreliminaryresults;aclearstatementofremainingresearch;andatentativeschedulefor completingthework.ItshouldalsoconformtothestylisticrequirementsforthesisproposalsintheDepartmentof Statistics.AsintheDepartmentofStatistics,thethesiscommitteemustofferitspreliminaryapprovaloftheproposal followingameetingthatisopentootherfaculty.Thestudentthenarrangestopresenttheproposalpublicly,sothat CNBCandStatisticsfacultyandothercommunitymemberscanattend.FormalapprovalisconferredbytheStatistics

facultyandthePNCsteeringcommittee. Ph.D.ThesisDefense:Normally,thedissertationiscompletedduringthestudentsfifthyear.Thestudentshouldset upapredefensemeetingwiththeircommitteememberssixmonthspriortotheirdefense.Thefinaldefenseisa publicpresentation,inaccordwiththeCollegeandUniversityrequirementsforthePh.D.Itisthecandidates responsibilitytoensurethattheCollegeandUniversitysguidelinesarefollowedforpublicityofthedefenseandthe availabilityofthethesisdocumentatleasttwoweekspriortothedefense.Notethatthedefensemustbeheldatleast 21daysbeforethedatethedegreeisawarded. CertificationofCompletionoftheRequirementsforGraduation BeforeaPhDtoanindividualstudentmaybegrantedthetwoPNCcodirectors,theStatisticsdepartmenthead,anda CNBCeducationalprogramstaffmembermustsubmitwrittennotificationtotheschoolofgraduatestudiesandthe CNBCstatingthatthestudenthascompletedallrequirementsasdescribedinthePNCguidelines.

4AdditionalProgramInformationandRequirements
Collaborationwithexperimentalists Onecriticalaspectofasuccessfultrainingprogramforcomputationalneuroscienceistogivestudentsadetailed understandingofhowtheexperimentaldatatheyareanalyzingormodelingarecollected.Thisallowsstudentsto appreciatethelimitationsoftheexperimentaldata(suchassourcesofvariability),appreciatewhatkindsof experimentscanandcannotbedoneandaidintheirabilitytointeractwithexperimentalists.Thisalsoincreasesthe relevanceofthestudentscomputationalbasedresearchandincreasestheoverallcaliberofthestudentsPhD dissertation. AllstudentsinthePNCareencouragedtodoexperimentalworkand/ortocollaboratecloselywithexperimentalists. Studentsworkingindifferentareaswillhavedifferentneedsintermsoftheextentoftheirinvolvementcollecting experimentaldata.Somestudentswillbeinlaboratoriesinwhichbothexperimentalandcomputationalworkisbeing performedandwillgainexperienceinbothapproachesthroughouttheirtraining.Otherstudents,workinginastrictly computationallab,willtypicallydoa10weekrotationinanexperimentallabwiththeintenttobegin(orcontinue)a collaborationwiththatlab.Aproposaldetailingthiscrosstrainingexperiencemustbesubmittedforapprovaltothe PNCsteeringcommitteebythebeginningofthesecondyear. TeachingAssistantRequirement Inordertobuildskillsinteaching,mentoring,communicationandmanagementskills,eachstudentwillberequiredto serveasateachingassistantfortwocoursesduringtheircareerasagraduatestudentintheprogram.Theideal scenariowouldincludeoneintroductorylevelcourseandoneadvancedlevelcourse.ThetimecommitmentforTA shipshouldberoughly12hoursperweek.Thestudentwillreceiveaformalevaluationfromthecourseinstructor eachsemestertheyserveasaTeachingAssistant.Studentsmustreceiveasatisfactoryevaluationtoreceivecreditfor thesemester.PriortoservingasaTA,thestudentisrequiredtocompleteformaltrainingthroughtheEberlyCenter forTeachingExcellencebypassingthecourse99701:College&UniversityTeaching(6unitspass/fail). Selectionandchangeofthesisadvisor:Atalltimesduringtheirgraduatetraining,studentswillbeengagedin researchunderthesupervisionofafacultyadvisor.Thisadvisorisresponsiblefortheacademicandfinancialsupport ofthestudent.StudentsinitiallywillbeassignedanadvisoruponadmissiontothePNC,whowillguidethestudentin selectingcoursesandhelpformhisorherinitialresearchproject.Bytheendofthesummerfollowingthefirstyear studentsmustidentifyathesisadvisor,whichinmanycaseswillbethefirstyearacademicadvisor.Occasionally,a studentsfacultyadvisormaybechanged(seebelow);mostoftenthischangeoccursbecauseofachangeinthe studentsresearchinterests.Iftheadvisormustchangeforanyreason,itistheresponsibilityofthestudenttoidentify anewadvisorwhoiswillingandabletoprovideacademicandfinancialsupport.Thisadvisormustthenbeapproved bythecochairsofthePNCsteeringcommitteeandtheCMUcodirectoroftheCNBC. Astudentmayvoluntarilychangeadvisorswiththemutualconsentofthenewadvisor,thecochairsofthePNC steeringcommitteeandtheCMUcodirectoroftheCNBC.Anadvisormayterminatehisorhersupervisionofand responsibilityforastudentafterwrittennotificationoftheproblems,whichmayincludelackofeffort,lackof researchprogress,lackofresearchaptitude,failuretoobeypolicyorprocedures,failuretocomplywithUniversity regulations,orbehaviordetrimentaltothelaboratoryorprogram.Considerationofthisactionmustbebroughttothe attentionofthestudent,thePNCsteeringcommitteeandtheCMUCNBCcodirector.Astudentwhonolongerhasan advisorwillbegiventwoweekstofindanewadvisor.Studentswithoutadvisorsafterthistimemaybeterminated fromtheprogram. TerminationofaStudentfromtheGraduateProgram:StudentsmaybeterminatedfromtheGraduateProgram forfailuretoachieveaBorbetterintworequiredcorecoursesoroneofthesecoursesonsuccessiveoccasions, failuretopassanyprogrammilestone,failuretomakeadequateprogressinresearch,failuretofind/maintainan acceptableresearchadvisor,breachesinethicalconductsuchasplagiarismorforconductdetrimentaltothe program.Exceptforinstancesinvolvingbreachesinlegalorethicalbehavior,studentswillnotbeterminatedfromthe Programwithoutfirstbeingnotifiedinwritingthattheyhavebeenplacedonprobation.Thiswrittencommunication willincludeadescriptionofthereason(s)forplacingthestudentonprobation,andthegoalsthatthestudentmust accomplishinordertoregaingoodstandingintheProgram. Whenastudentwhoisnotonprobationfailsaprogrammilestone,thestudentwillbeplacedonprobationandgiven asecondopportunitytopassthatmilestone.Thestudentwillreceiveawrittencommunicationfromthecommittee thatevaluatedperformanceontheexamdetailingthedeficienciesinperformanceandwhatmustbeaccomplishedto satisfytheseconcerns.Thesecondexaminationmustbetakennomorethanthreemonthsafterthefirstexamination, byadeadlinespecifiedbythecommittee.Asecondfailureofthesamemilestonewillresultinterminationfromthe Program.Whenastudentwhoisalreadyonprobationfailsoneofthemajorexaminations,thestudentmayormay notbegivenasecondopportunitytopassthatexamination,atthediscretionofthePNCSteeringcommittee. Inallcases,theterminationofastudentrequiresadecisionbythePNCSteeringcommitteeandacceptanceofa recommendationfordismissalbythecoDirectorsoftheCNBC.Terminationsarefinal. GrievanceproceduresinthePNC FromtimetotimestudentsmayhavecomplaintsaboutsomeaspectoftheirtraininginthePNC.Graduatestudents areencouragedtodiscusssuchconcernswithanyfacultymember,especiallytheiradvisorsorthePNCsteering committeecodirectors.ThePNCtriestosolveproblemsinformally,buttheremaycomeatimewhenaproblem arisesthatcannotberesolvedthroughinformalprocedures.Toprovideforthissituation,thereisaformalgrievance procedure. TheprocesswillcommencewhenastudentfilesagrievanceinwritingwiththeCMUCNBCcodirector.Thegrievance willbediscussedbyathreepersonboardincludingtheCMUCNBCcodirectorandtwoPNCfacultymembersselected bytheCMUcodirectoroftheCNBC.Theboardwillrenderawrittenrecommendation,withcopiessenttothestudent, theofficeoftheDeanofH&SS,andthoseagainstwhomthegrievancewasbrought(ifspecificindividualsare involved).Nopersonagainstwhomthegrievanceisbroughtwillhavearoleininvestigatingit.Ifthecodirectoris amongthoseagainstwhomthegrievanceisbrought,thentheDeanwillbeaskedtodesignateanotherseniorfaculty memberfromtheCNBCtosubstituteforthecodirectoronthethreepersonboard. Universitypoliciesandagreementsgoverningstudent,staff,andfacultyrightssupersedethisprocedure.Ifa satisfactorysettlementisnotreachedthroughtheactivityofthethreepersonboarddescribedabove,thestudentmay bringthegrievancetotheDeanand,subsequently,totheProvost.Inthiscasethegrievanceboardswritten

recommendationwillbepartofthepreliminarybackgroundinformationreviewedbytheDeanorProvostorother Universityofficialbeforeanyactionistaken. ThestudentmaywithdrawthegrievanceatanypointthroughouttheDepartmentalinvestigation. GrievanceswithintheCollegeofHumanitiesandSocialSciences AnygraduatestudentwhohasexhaustednormalgrievanceprocedureswithintheDepartmentmaypresenta grievancetotheofficeoftheDeanoftheCollege.TheDeanmayrequeststatementsortestimonyfromotherparties involved,andwillconsiderthegrievanceinanadhoccommitteecomposedoftheDean,afacultymemberfroma departmentnotinvolvedinthegrievanceandagraduatestudentfromaseconduninvolveddepartment.The committeewillpresentitsdecisioninwritingtoallpartiesinvolved. TheCNBCcolloquiumseriesisastudentrunspeakerseriesthatbringseminentscientiststoPittsburgh.Studentshave playedamajorroleintheselectionandhostingofspeakersthroughouttheyears;facultyprovideinputonspeaker selection,butthestudentsdoallthevotingandinteractextensivelywiththespeakersduringtheirvisits. TheBrainBagresearchseminarsmeetapproximatelybiweeklythroughouttheacademicyearonMondayevenings. AteachBrainBag,astudentgivesabrieftalkdescribingresearchinprogress.Studentsarerequiredtoattend2Brain Bagspersemester.EachstudentmustpresentaBrainBagbytheendoftheirthirdyearintheprogram. TheCNBCRetreatisheldintheFallsemestereveryyear.Thegoalofourretreatistofosterscientificandsocial interactionsamongfaculty,postdocs,andstudentsaffiliatedwiththeCNBC.Theprogramincludesafullagendaof scientificpresentationsanddiscussions,aswellasotherinformational,social,andrecreationalevents.Retreat attendanceisarequiredpartoftheCNBCprogram,andtheCNBCEducationCommitteehasadoptedapolicythat studentsmustparticipateintheretreateachyeartoremainingoodstanding.However,werealizethatsometimesa schedulingconflictmakesattendancedifficult,andtherefore,eachstudentwillreceiveone"optout".Thatis,aCNBC studentmaypickoneyearwhentheydonotattendtheretreat.Weencourageyoutosavethisforwhenyoureally needit,asadditionaloptoutswillnotbeavailable.
