1 The subject matter is interesting and the professor was clearly enthusiastic about the course.
Although large, the way the class was set up made it easier to do group work. The homeworks allowed for discussion with other
2
students.
3 Amazing course and amazing professor.
4 The questions asked to the class with the XR clicker helped prepare for what was to come on exams.
5 I enjoyed the integration of multimedia.
6 The modern connections that the course contained help to keep things relative and more understandable.
7 The syllabus was very detailed. Easy to follow along and you always knew what was coming up!
8 The homework assignments helped reinforce the ideas and concepts discussed in class.
9 The subject material was interesting enough to keep me motivated.
10 clickers made the course easier to comprehend
11 the clicker questions
12 World Sim
The case studies in the Ferraro book were a good way of bringing the concepts we learned to life and placing them in a real world
13
context. The YouTube clips were a lot of fun as well.
14 watching videos in various culture. It helps to understand and related to lecture and text more.
15 Video examples presented that were relavent to the course topics.

The videos shown in class were extremely beneficial to the learning experience. Also the guest speakers who presented in class were
16 thoroughly interesting, especially the one talking about religion. The world simulation was really fun and helped to understand how
cultures interact with one another. Great idea!!!
I really enjoyed the way this class was put together. The homework helped me to learn first hand how to use the techniques learned in
class. I also enjoyed the open discussion atmosphere that was used in the class. I felt able to participate without being criticized for
17
being wrong. The books used were extremely informative and interesting. The tests were challenging but never above my knowledge
level. If you studied then you would pass with flying colors. I think it was a perfect learning environment.
She used the examples from other sources, media and video files in particular very effectively in explaining the concepts. This course is
18
very interesting
19 I learned more than I ever could have hope about cultural anthropology and what it means to be an anthropologist from this course.

Question: Please comment on COURSE IMPROVEMENTS you would suggest.

Response Rate: 35.71% (15 of 42)

It would be better if the class were later in the day. Also, there was very little historical background and the textbook was not very
1
effective. Finally, the workload and expectations seemed geared to a higher level than a 100 level class.
This course is wonderful, but the workload (as far as homework goes) is a little intensive compared to the amount of credit we get for it. I
was taking this as an easier course because I was interested in it and I spent more time (though not effort) finishing it than I have in 300
and 400 level classes.
2
I would have liked more real life examples to supplement the theories taught.

I am not sure how necessary the clickers were, it would have been just as easy to take attendance by sending a paper around the room
and a lot chaper for students.
Drop the World Sim project. It is too difficult for students to collaborate in a class so large. Also, the homework assignments are graded
3
too harshly and the expectations were too vague.
4 I favor making stronger use of UB Learns. The XL Clicker should either be more widely used in other classes or not required.
5 --
6 I really enjoyed the course and cannot think of anything to change.
7 somewhat dry lectures
8 more group projects
9 homework explainition
Lose the homework assignments. To be honest, this course is a gen ed course and as much as i enjoyed it, i simply did not have the
10 time to devote to the homework from this course. A few tests and a final paper are fine, but have assignments constantly due does
nothing but hurt GPA's.
11 Too much working in groups
12 Different book(s).
13 I really don't think there could be any improvements.
14 None
I wish we would have had more time for the World Sim!! People were just starting to really get it when we had to stop. Also, the
15
homework was rather useless... I didn't feel like it taught me anything.

Question: Please comment on how effective the INSTRUCTOR was in teaching this course.

Response Rate: 50.00% (21 of 42)

Assignments were graded by the TAs, not the instructor, and there were a few assignments that took a long time to be graded and
1
returned to the class.
The proffesor was very effective in teaching this course properly, this is my second time taking it, and it does not even compare to the
2
first time when i took it.
As I already said, she was very enthusiastic. Also, she was very approachable and made every effort to ensure contact through email,
3
office hours, etc which must have been difficult given the large size of the class.
4 The instructor was quite clear in her expectations of students and very accessible.
5 Very effective
6 She was a very effective instructor that connected with and educated the students .
Amazing teaching style, interesting, kept the students involved. All of these things make Professor Szafran on the same page as the
7
students and still achieve the course's goals.
8 She made the points very clear to us, and taught us how to think from an anthropological way.

Prof. Szafran was extremely effective in teaching this course. Her choice of video clips, clicker tests and own personal experience
9
aided in my learning.
10 She was very good at teaching this course
11 the instructor seemed to know what she was doing.
12 Wildly enthusiastic.
13 Very fair to students, taught in an interesting and engaging manner that was also constructive.
14 Great instructor, would definitely take a class with her again.
was nice how she included different ways of teaching into the course - powerpoints, youtube, discussions, etc. however, was a bit much
15
for a 100 level class. world sim project is a good idea in theory, but way too vague and ineffective
16 Very good instructor. Knowledgable, fair, and approachable. Would recommend to others.
She was wonderful and always kept the class interesting. Even though it was at 9:30 i never wanted to miss a class. I loved the youtube
17 video documentaries that she shared. They were all very enlightening and helped me to fully understand the concepts. By far my
favorite professor this semester.
I think the course was very well taught. The instructor and TA's were extremely approachable and helpful. They were always quick to
18 answer questions and always available to meet. Their teaching methods were clear and concise and extremely understandable. I learned
easily and it was always a fun experience.
19 She used the examples from other sources, media and video files in particular very effectively in explaining the concepts
20 I thought she was quite good!! she explained things well, and had enlightening examples.
Denise was an excellent teacher, whom I learned a great deal from. She brought "cultural anthropology" to life for everyone in that
21
classroom and presented the material with enthusiasm that made us want to come to class the next day.
