Count Your Blessings (Literally) by Rev. Trey Flowers, Minister of Youth & "The Bridge"

writing down things we are thankful for each day, and we would love for you to join us in this endeavor. Swing by The Bridge on Sunday night and pick up a Gratitude Journal, or join the conversation on our Facebook page. In the mean time, take just a moment to write down 5 things you are thankful for: 1. ____________________________________________ 2. ____________________________________________ 3. ____________________________________________ 4. ____________________________________________ 5. ____________________________________________

Last Sunday night at The Bridge we were graced by a message from Jimmy Wilferth, who is the President of Heart for Africa. As you may know, our church has sent ten missionaries to Swaziland with Heart for Africa over the last few years. Jimmy shared pictures and stories about the great work that is being done there and how Heart for Africa is changing lives both in Swaziland and in our own country. In addition to inspiring us with his testimony about Africa, Jimmy also talked about gratitude. He mentioned a recent study which showed November is the most likely month for people to be diagnosed with depression due to the cold setting in and the sky getting dark so much earlier. How ironic that in a month devoted to giving thanks people are more likely to be depressed! However, the same study found that people who made a practice of gratitude by writing down five things they are thankful each day were found to be 25% happier on average than people who did not. In other words, scientists have found a link between being grateful and being content. Coincidentally, in the same "Gratitude Attitude" worship series where Jimmy mentioned writing down things you are thankful for, we have also been handing out "Gratitude Journals" at The Bridge each week. As a community we are

Now, look at the list above. Offer these five things as both your prayer and your offering to God today. May we all make this a daily practice between now and Thanksgiving (and beyond!) as we become people with an attitude of gratitude. Gratefully,

Time to be Thankful by Mary Clare Pyron, Parish Nurse

The fall and the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving is my favorite time of year. I love watching the leaves change from a bright green to red and orange, and when they fall they reveal the intricate tangle of tree limbs and branches that have been hidden all spring and summer. I love the crisp autumn air and the morning frost. But what I love the most is how thankful people seem. People talk about being thankful for their family and their friends. They talk about being thankful for warm houses, food and things we so often take for granted. One thing I am especially thankful for this year, is Woodmont. I am thankful for the friends it has given me. I am thankful for the things I have learned here and how this church continues to nurture me spiritually. I am thankful that this church has become my family and my home. It is a place I feel comfortable and a place I feel safe. I am thankful for each one of you, and each unique quality and viewpoint you bring to this congregation. Thank you for making this church what is today and what it will be tomorrow. Let us continue this feeling of thankfulness throughout the year and not just the few weeks leading up to the holiday rush. ~Mary Clare

I WONDER AS I WANDER by Dr. C. Roy Stauffer, Minister of Church Life

There are certainly some deeper, far more important things There's a song in our hymnal that we might be singing in a few weeks in Advent. to "wonder" about as far as our Christian faith is concerned. It's entitled, "I Wonder As I Wander." I like Many call them the "paradoxes of our faith" which we as that phrase because it describes something I love to do as humans will never be able to understand: often as I can. And Autumn is the most wonderful time of year to "wonder as you wander" under the golden canopy of How can Jesus be fully God and fully human divine and God's changing Maple leaves. human at one and the same time? We all wonder, but what do we wonder about? I wonder why God made giraffes with such long necks? Being a cat lover, I've always wondered why cats like to play with and torture their prey? As one who loves the nature channel on TV, I always wonder what a wildebeest thinks about in the jaws of a crocodile? The longer I live in Nashville, the more I wonder about things that puzzle me: If the city believes in recycling, why do they collect garbage every week but recycling material only once a month? Why does a city bus stop and sit every day during rush hour for at least ten to fifteen minutes in front of the Belle Meade Kroger thus backing up the rush house traffic and making the motorist less than happy? Why do the police allow all these lawn and landscaping trucks and trailers to block neighborhood streets, especially on blind hills and dangerous intersections? How can God be both one person and three persons at the same time? How can God be both near and far? How can the first be last and the last first? (Matt. 20:16; Mark 9:35) How can you lose your life by saving it and save your life by losing it? (Matt. 10:39) How can the measure you give be the measure you receive? (Matt. 7:2; Mark 4:24) How can those who exalt themselves be humbled and those who humble themselves be exalted? (Matt. 23:12; Luke 14:11) Yes, I love to "wonder as I wander" or ponder so much of life. What would it be like if we never wondered about anything? I guess we wouldn't need our minds. But some things we will just have to wonder about until we can ask God about it face to face. And that's what faith is all about. So, what do you wonder about? ~Roy

Walk Thru Bethlehem (WTB)

WTB Cookie Bakers Needed this Saturday!
If you have 2 hands, a cute laugh, and are not afraid of flour, then join us in the kitchen this Saturday, November 16th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to make sesame seed cookies for Walk Thru Bethlehem. There will be stirring, patting, cutting and bagging and for the guys- I have heavy duty machines to operate!! No prior experience required! If you have any questions, contact Ronda Hirst at 361-3381.

WTB Volunteering Needs

WTB 2013 is in need of the following volunteers. Please prayfully consider helping us during this wonderful gift to our community. Please email or call Paul Hardin if you are interested or have questions at 641-2287 or gpaulhardinjr@gmail.com.

Animal Herdsman: Coordinate the construction of the animal stable area on Saturday morning (Dec. 7). The Boy Scouts and other volunteers are available to help construct this area. Carpenter Shop: Jesus was a carpenter so we know that was an important job in first century Judea. Our carpenter shop displays some typical products of the shops work and the cast members work away on various projects. You do not have to have a costume role in this shop. You need to assist with setting up and tearing down this shop. Assist with volunteers understanding their roles. Pottery Shop: This shop is very hands on as guests work with the cast to make small clay items. This is also a great spot for cast families with younger children. You do not have to have a costume role in this shop. You need to assist with setting up and tearing down this shop. Assist with volunteers understanding their roles. Sacrificial Animals: Located next to the synagogue this shop sells birds for sacrifice in the synagogue. Dont worry no animals are harmed during the operation of this shop. This is a station where outgoing actors can really have some fun. You do not have to have a costume role in this shop. You need to assist with setting up and tearing down this shop. Assist with volunteers understanding their roles. BAMBOO IS NEEDED. If you have bamboo, we would love to have it. It needs to be CUT AND DELIVERED on the morning of Saturday, December 7. If you are unable to cut and deliver it, we will do it for you. When cut on Saturday morning, it will last through Sunday.
Please note on the above shop requests: the request is for a leader of that shop and not simply a volunteer role. As a shop keeper you will be responsible for decorating the shop before and packing up after WTB.

Bread Bakers Needed for WTB

Are you looking for a way to help with WTB? Bread baking is your answer. It's fun, easy, and makes your home smell wonderful! Here's what you do: Purchase the frozen (unbaked) loaves of bread (5 to a pack at Kroger). Thaw (no need to let it rise) the bread and cut into 4 pieces, lengthwise. Roll each piece into a long snake and cut about 1-inch pieces from the snake. Place them on a tray and bake at 350 until light brown. Each loaf makes 80-100 pieces. Most bakers choose to bake 5 loaves. The baked bread pieces can be placed in Ziploc or grocery bags and then frozen. If you don't have room in your freezer, please place the pieces in the large silver freezer in the downstairs WCC kitchen. Please call Lisa Pitts at 332-8368 (no text) or email at lisadpitts@yahoo.com if you would like to bake or have 6 any questions.

The First Gift of Christmas!

If you are a CFCA sponsor, please put sending a card to your sponsored child at the top of your holiday list. Letters take a long time to be translated and to travel to their destination, but writing them is easy. You can send a letter using the mailing labels that you have OR you can write a letter online and even upload a photo! Your sponsorship also provides a Christmas celebration for your sponsored friend in their community, so although you are welcome to send a small gift, it's certainly not necessary. A letter is perfect! Emmie Thomas' family sent a family Christmas card and their sponsored child loved seeing a picture of their whole family. To send a letter online, go to www.cfcausa.org: -Go to My CFCA/ Manage Account -Click on My Sponsorship -Login or register if you haven't done this before; you'll need your CFCA ID number -Select a fun letter template and write a note! -Upload your family Christmas card or photo you want to share Any questions, feel free to call CFCA at 800-875-6564. You should receive a letter from your sponsored child during the holiday season!
