The self-sealing strip edge is applied facing up and along the roof eave or rake edge. 2.2.8 Fasteners: Fasteners must be minimum No. 12 gage, 3/8-inch-diameter-head (9.5 mm), corrosion-resistant nails. For systems recognized under the UBC, minimum No. 16 gage, 15/16-inch-crown-width (23.8 mm), corrosionresistant staples may be used when approved by the building official. Fasteners must be of sufficient length to penetrate into the sheathing 3/4 inch (19.1 mm), or through the sheathing, whichever is less. 2.2.9 Underlayment: Roof underlayment must comply with Underwriters Laboratories Standard UL-55A, ASTM D 226 Type I or Type II, ASTM D 4869 Type I or Type II, or must be underlayment recognized in a current ICBO ES evaluation report as complying with the ICBO ES Acceptance Criteria for Nonasphaltic-fiberglass-based Roof Underlayment (AC160) and recognized for use with Class A asphalt shingles. 2.3 InstallationNew Construction: 2.3.1 General: When installed on new construction in accordance with this section, the shingles are a Class A roof covering. Page 2 of 7 Table 15-B-1 of the UBC, Table 1507.2 of the IBC, Section R905.2 of the IRC, or Section 1507.3 of the SBC, except as noted in this report. The roof deck is code-complying, minimum 3/8-inch-thick (9.5 mm) exterior plywood; 7/16-inchthick (11.1 mm) oriented strand board (OSB); or nominal 1inch-by-6-inch (25 by 152 mm) lumber installed as solid sheathing. Underlayment is as described in the aforementioned code sections, except that in jurisdictions enforcing the UBC in severe climate areas on roof slopes of 4:12 (33.33%) and over, one layer of 50-pound (22.7 kg) or greater coated roll roofing or coated-glass base shall be applied from the eaves to a line 12 inches (305 mm) inside the exterior wall line, with all laps cemented together. 2.3.2 Fastening: 2.3.2.1 Standard Fastening: Each shingle is fastened to the roof deck with a minimum of four fasteners, one of which is located 1 inch (25.4 mm) in from each edge, and the balance evenly spaced across the width of the shingle, except for roof slopes of 20:12 (166.67%) and over, where six fasteners are used. Fasteners are placed on the fastener line. See Figure 1 for typical fastening details. Each course of shingles is offset from the preceding course as shown in Figure 1 and specified in Table 3. 2.3.2.2 High Wind Fastening: A minimum of six fasteners, placed as shown in Figure 1, are required under the following conditions: 2.3.2.2.1 UBC: In areas exposed to conditions exceeding basic (fastest mile) wind speeds of 80 mph (129 km/h), on structures a maximum of 40 feet (12 192 mm) in height, in Exposure B areas, but not greater than maximum basic (fastest mile) wind speeds of 110 mph (177 km/h), on structures a maximum of 30 feet (9144 mm) in height, in Exposure B areas. See UBC Section 1620. 2.3.2.2.2 IBC: When the roof is installed in one of the following categories: 1. The basic (3-second gust) wind speed is 110 mph (177 km/h) or greater, and the eave is 20 feet (6096 mm) or higher above grade. 2. The basic (3-second gust) wind speed is 110 mph (177 km/h) or greater, and the Importance Factor in IBC Table 1609.5 is 1.15. 3. The basic (3-second gust) wind speed is 120 mph (193 km/h) or greater. 2.3.2.2.3 IRC: When the roof is installed in one of the following categories: 1. The basic (3-second gust) wind speed is 110 mph (177 km/h) or greater, and the eave is 20 feet (6096 mm) or higher above grade. 2. The basic (3-second gust) wind speed is 120 mph (193 km/h) or greater. 3. Installation is in special wind zones defined in Figure R301.2(4). 2.3.2.2.1 SBC: When the roof is in one of the following categories: 1. The basic (fastest mile) wind speed is 90 mph (145 km/h) or greater and the eave height is 20 feet (6096 mm) or higher above grade. 2. The basic (fastest mile) wind speed is 90 mph (145 km/h) or greater and the use factor for the building is 1.15.

ER-5414 3. The basic (fastest mile) wind speed is 100 mph (161 km/h) or greater. 2.3.2.3 Shingle Sealing: In colder climates or wind regions where it is questionable whether the stick-down dots of adhesive will activate and seal the shingles, the shingles must be hand-sealed to the satisfaction of the building official. Hand-sealing consists of applying a minimum of three 1-inch-diameter (25.4 mm) spots of asphalt cement complying with ASTM D 4586, Type I or Type II, on the unexposed surface, equally spaced across each shingle. 2.3.2.4 Hip and Ridge Shingles: Hip and ridge shingles are placed evenly over hips and ridges, and are fastened to the roof deck with two fasteners, located on either side of the shingle, on the nail line. See Figure 1. 2.3.3 Valley Construction: Acceptable valley construction for closed cut, California closed cut methods, or woven valleys involves 36-inch-wide (914 mm), 50-pound (22.7 km) or greater, coated roll roofing that is placed vertically in the valley over required underlayment. For open valleys and the California open valley, corrosion-resistant metal is centered and placed vertically in the valley over the coated roll roofing. The California valley methods are limited to slopes of 4:12 or greater and are further described in Figure 1. Metal valley flashing is as follows: 1. UBC: A minimum of 18 inches (457 mm) wide, complying with Section 1508.2. 2. IBC: A minimum of 18 inches (457 mm) wide, complying with Table 1507.2.9.2. 3. IRC: A minimum of 24 inches (610 mm) wide, complying with Table R905.2.8.2. 4. SBC: A minimum of 18 inches (457 mm) wide, complying with Table 1507.3.9.2. No fasteners are to be placed within 6 inches (152 mm) of the valley centerline. 2.4 InstallationReroofing: When installed over existing wood shingle or Class A or Class C asphalt shingle roofs in accordance with this section, the Prestique and Capstone shingle products are Class A roof coverings. The existing wood or asphalt shingle roof covering must be inspected in accordance with Section 1515 of Appendix Chapter 15 of the UBC, or provisions and limitations of Section 1510 of the IBC, Section R907 of the IRC, or Section 1510 of the SBC, as applicable. Prior to the reroofing, hip and ridge covering must be removed, and a single layer of Type 30, nonperforated felt underlayment must be installed over the existing wood shingles. Except as noted in this section, the shingles are installed in accordance with Section 2.3.2.1 of this report. Fasteners must be of sufficient length to penetrate 3/4 inch (19.1 mm) into the sheathing, or through the sheathing, whichever is less. Flashing and edging must comply with Section 2.3.3 of this report and the following: 1. UBC: Section 1520 of Appendix Chapter 15. 2. IBC: Sections 1510.5 and 1510.6. 3. IRC: Sections R907.5 and R907.6. 4. SBC: Sections 1510 and 1510.6.
