Gojan Natalia Group EMREI-115 Laboratory work 1 The study of statistical graphs and their types.

Construction of statistical graphs STEP 1: I created Table 1 in Excel using the given data. Table 1 illustrates the students in colleges, by branch group and sex, school year 2008-2009) Table 1 Total students Industry Constructions Transport Agriculture Economy Law Health Care Education Arts and Cinema Other Total Girls Boys 32,70 18,30 14,40 5,60 2,50 3,10 2,30 0,60 1,70 2,80 0,20 2,60 2,40 0,80 1,60 3,90 2,70 1,20 1,90 1,00 0,90 5,20 4,30 0,90 4,60 3,70 0,90 1,10 0,60 0,50 2,90 1,90 1,00

STEP 2: I used data from Table 1 to create a Line chart in Excel.

The students in colleges, by branch group and sex, school year 2008-2009 (thousands persons)
6.00 5.60 5.00 5.20 4.60 4.30 4.00 3.10 2.50 2.00 1.70 1.00 0.60 0.00 0.20 1.60 1.20 0.80 1.00 0.90 0.90 0.90 1.10 0.60 0.50 1.00 2.80 2.60 2.30 2.70 2.40 1.90 1.90 3.90 3.70 2.90

This Line Chart has a vertical axis and a horizontal axis. On the vertical axis it is indicated the number (thousands) of students in colleges, and on the horizontal axis the branches in which they study.

The Line chart is suitable if we want to indicate changes in data over time (so not in this case). These changes may be used to predict future results. It is usually used to plot time-related continuous data series The individual data points are connected by lines, so shows clearly the changes in data. In this we can compare the different data points.

STEP 3: Using data from Table 1, I created a Pie chart in Excel, which illustrates the number of students in colleges, by branch group and sex in school year 2008-2009.
Students in colleges, by branch group and sex, school year 2008-2009
4.60 1.10 2.90 Total students Industry Constructions 5.20 1.90 3.90 2.40 2.80 2.30 5.60 32.70 Transport Agriculture Economy Law Health care Education

This Pie chart uses the data from Table 1 and presents it as a whole. This type of chart is an informative way to depict proportional statistical information and allow for easy comparisons. A disadvantage of this chart is that you can only show few slices, otherwise you will cause confusion. The categories that represent a few percenatage of the whole cannot be easily distinguished in the graph. This graph doesns show the distribution of girls and boys in the sectors. STEP 4: Using data from Table 1, I created a Column chart in Excel. I chose the 100 % Stacked column

type. The number of students in colleges, by branch group and sex in school year 2008-2009
Other Arts and cinema Education Health care Law Economy Agriculture Transport Constructions Industry Total students 0% 2.90 1.10 4.60 5.20 1.90 3.90 2.40 2.80 2.30 5.60 32.70 20% 40% 1.90 1.00 0.60 0.50 3.70 0.90 4.30 0.90 1.00 0.90 2.70 1.20 0.80 1.60 0.20 2.60 0.60 1.70 2.50 3.10 18.30 14.40 60% 80% 100%

Total Girls Boys

Using this chart we can compare the percentage each value contributes to a total across categories by using vertical rectangles. This chart emphasizes the proportion of each data series.

Conclusion: In my opinion, the chart that better illustrates Table 1 is the Column chart. Table 1 shows the number of students in colleges, by branch group and sex, in school year 2008-2009. In the last graph we can easily see the allocation of boys and girls in the different branches and the share that they have. This graph also gives us the clear distribution of boys and girls in percentages. We can analyze in which sector predominate boys or girls. For exampe: Boys prevail in the Transport and Constructions branches, while Girls in the Health care and Education branches. This happens because the male labour force is most used in the heavy and processing industry, while the female labour force in the tertiary sector (services).
