Carrier Oils Carrier oils are less volatile than essential oils and are therefore suitable for

use as a carrier. Vegetable oil molecules can be absorbed into the blood stream through the pores of the skin. Mineral oils (baby oil is a mineral oil) will not penetrate the skin, and can sometimes act as irritants, and are therefore not used in Aromatherapy. he carrier oil acts as a lubricant between hand and skin in massage. he nutritional constituents of the vegetable oils, such as V! AVOCADO OIL A rich heavy oil which is more penetrating than most carrier oils. !t is therefore good for dry skin. !t is obtained from the pulp of the avocado pear and has a deep green colour. !t is a stable natural oil, rich in V! AM!" $. EVENING PRIMROSE OIL 7btained principally from 2orage and 2lackcurrant although this oil is comparatively e)pensive it has e)tremely beneficial effects. he oil contains gammalinoleic acid which converts into prostaglandin $. his substance promotes cell membrane growth and inhibits abnormal cell division. !t is effective in the treatment of acne, ec/ema, dermatitis and may be used for allergic skin reactions on its own. HAZEL NUT OIL A penetrating and nourishing oil. PEACH & APRICOT KERNEL OILS =ight oils, often used for the face JOJOBA WA his is not a vegetable oil but a li;uid wa). !t comes from the nuts of a very hardy bush which grows in arid climates such as deserts. !t has an emollient, or skin+softening effect, and makes a good vegetable based replacement for oil. 3o4oba was used by the Apache !ndians in California as a cosmetic and healing salve. 1ecent research has also revealed that 3o4oba helps remedy oily skin as well as dry skin, and contains skin re4uvenating substances. >iluting $ssential 7ils he most effective way to dilute essential oils is in a carrier oil. A carrier can be any high+ ;uality vegetable oil such as almond, apricot, ha/elut, olive, macadamia, kukui, wheatgerm, grapeseed or sesame. Carrier oils should be stored away from heat and light to ensure their freshness. he addition of 4o4oba oil as 89' of your carrier oil will help e)tend the shelf life @

of your blend as will Vitamin $ oil which is an e)cellent anti+o)idant< adding it to any aromatherapy blend will help e)tend the life of most vegetable oils. 7ne or two capsules (@99+A99 !B) per two+ounce bottle of carrier oil is enough. Make blends in small amounts and use within a few months. hey can be stored in the refrigerator for e)tended shelf life. Bsing more of an oil will not get you better results< in fact, it may cause adverse effects. #ome oils, such as lavender, are sedating in low dilutions and stimulating in high dilutions. As changes in the clients condition occurs vary the oils according to new indications. !f the condition doesnIt begin to change after a reasonable amount of time, the blend should be changed and medical attention sought, if necessary. :oot and hand baths 0lace D+89 drops of essential oil in a bowl of warm water and bathe the hands or feet for 89+ 8& minutes. A small reservoir at the top of the burner is filled with water. his is heated by the flame from a nightlight placed inside the burner. Bp to & drops of neat essential oil may be sprinkled on the water. his gradually evaporates, filling the room with the fragrant aroma. $LAM0=$#.+ =avender produces a rela)ing atmosphere which can help with insomnia. 1osewood is soothing for tired grumpy children who donIt want to go to bed. >uring illness the use of a room fragrancer can help to protect the health of the rest of the family. he GaromaH inhibits infection by airborne bacteria such as cold and flu viruses. his has been put to good test in several hospitals and clinics. his method can also ease breathing in many chest conditions, and help asthmatics reduce their need for inhalants. =ight :ittings 0ut a few drops of neat essential oil on a cold light bulb or use a special attachment for the bulb. he fragrance will gradually permeate the room as the warmth of the bulb vaporises the essential oil. 5umidifiers A saucer of water with a few drops of neat essential oil, placed on top of a radiator, will act as a vaporiser and humidifier at the same time. 5andkerchief or issue 0ut one or two drops of neat essential oil onto a handkerchief or tissue, and inhale when re;uired. his method is useful for sinus congestion, travelling and when other methods are not convenient. %

SENSITIVIT0 AND ALLERGIES Allergic 1eactions 0eople with allergies, including allergies to perfume may be helped by 0rofessional Aromatherapy. he aromatherapist should recommend the essential oils for home use to complement the treatment. #ensitivity 7ccasionally a personIs skin may be sensitive to a particular oil (usually the more stimulating ones) causing irritation. !t will usually disappear within the hour. 0lain sweet almond oil, smoothed on the affected part, will assist the irritation to subside. HOW TO BLEND he dilution recommended is @.&', using almond oil (or other organic virgin cold pressed vegetable oil) as a base. here are @9 drops to every 8 ml ie. @9 drops N 8 ml his e;uates to one drop of essential oil to every @ mls of vegetable oil. :or a dry skin, & +89' of wheatgerm oil (providing the client is not allergic to wheat) or avocado oil may be included. he blend would normally contain ? essences, although typically might range from 8 + A essences, depending on analysis of the clientIs needs. his Aromatherapy blend can be used for both facial and body massage. >epending on the si/e of the person and amount of body hair, 8&+@& mls would be sufficient for a full body treatment. Containers 2rown glass bottles can be obtained from chemists or bottle suppliers. he number of mls is shown on the bottom of the bottle. BASIS OF BLENDING he synergistic effect of more than one oil is more powerful than the oils individually used and forms a uni;ue blend for the client. A blend of @, ? or A oils gives a choice of @,&99 blends. :ragrances which have similar top notes, eg ,rapefruit and 2ergamot, are not good used alone, as neither is long+lasting, unlike #andalwood and 3asmine which have heavier, longer lasting aromas. Always remember that essential oils are very concentrated, and should always be used with care. hey are usually diluted in vegetable oil, or diffused in water eg for a bath or infusion.

PURCHASE OF ESSENTIAL OILS !n order to benefit from the healing properties of the oils, it is vital to purchase them from a reputable supplier, who takes care to ensure high standards. he word GnaturalH on a bottleIs label does not always guarantee purity. 2uy the oils in small ;uantities replacing them as re;uired. A pure oil is one that has not been adulterated with chemicals or synthetic compounds. An oil comes from a named botanical plant and is from a definite geographical location. A pure essential oil should be distinguished from an Oaromatherapy oilI. he latter description is often used to describe an essential oil added to a carrier oil. !n some cases there may be only A' of essential oil in an Oaromatherapy oilI. !n these cases the oil is already blended for massage use. !ncreasing numbers of oils are being tested for companies by he "atural 7ils 1esearch Association. his is actively working to promote pure oils with a distinctive definition giving the name of the oil, its scientific name, its origin, its batch number and the Obest beforeI date. Many suppliers help both the public and therapists by indicating the origin of the oil. his is important because ,eranium 7il from China, $gypt or 1eunion has its own distinctive personality. 0rice !n general the price tends to reflect the yield of oil in the plant. 1oses produce very little oil, whereas $ucalyptus gives a high yield and is relatively ine)pensive. Although price can suggest a more e)pensive oil it does not always indicate either ;uality or genuineness. Mou have to establish a personal formula to achieve the best ;uality and price.
