THE PROJECT
The design of the kitchen was
created to take advantage of the
panoramic views through the
sliding glass windows.
Due to the scale of the
refurbishment and building
work, the job was managed like
a new-build project.
The kitchen had many bespoke
elements and needed to be
made and tted on site.
The booth was handmade on
site and positioned carefully to
maximise the view and balance
the kitchen visually.
The overall scale of the
new extension needed to be
controlled as it was to house the
kitchen and a living zone. Each
area had to have its own identity
and share the space, without
becoming too dominant.
To avoid delays, careful
project management was
required to co-ordinate the
numerous tradesmen who were
all working at the same time.
T
he old kitchen was adequate,
but formed a part of a series
of rooms that felt rather boxed
in. I really wanted an open-plan space
for a modern kitchen with a sitting
area where the family could chill out.
I chose walnut veneered cabinetry for
warmth and added curves to break
up and soften the look. The layout
isnt a traditional working triangle,
but I always feel central within the
main food preparation area. I love
everything about
this kitchen and
I particularly
appreciate it when
weve been away
on holiday and I
walk in; its always
like seeing it for
the first time!

design for your

changes of colour scheme

track down antique pine

and salvage yards perhaps

Contemporary timber
kitchens tend to concentrate
on either very dark or very
light woods, often with a
high-gloss nish, and grain
details as part of the design.
As a neutral material,
timber cabinets can be
teamed with a huge variety
of work surface materials.
Granite works particularly
well; consider dark, glossy
shades, or go to the other
extreme with light-coloured
honed, matt nishes. Avoid
mid-range brown shades
which will tend to blend with,

THE PROJECT
An old cottage was knocked
down and a ve-bedroom house
was built in its place. The build
took nearly 18 months.
The new kitchen was designed
by the architect to include a
breakfast bar and space for a
large range cooker, freestanding
appliances and a large dining
table and chairs.
Delays set in when the original
cottage was suspected to be
home to a family of bats.
Dominic had to call in a bat
specialist who concluded that
the particular species of bat
was not endangered, so the
build was given the go-ahead.
Dominic and Jessica chose
high-gloss kitchen units in
striking red for a distinctive
modern look. The scheme is

worktops and contemporary
furniture in high-gloss white.

hen webuilt the house we
asked our architect to design
a spacious kitchen with a
breakfast bar. We neededroom for
our very large stainless steel range
cooker and bespoke extraction hood.
We knew wewanted red high-gloss
units and we chose square stainless
steel handles and honed black granite
worktops for a contemporary look. We
are both very keen on modern design
so we bought a high-gloss dining table
and chairs from

our kitchen oor is
one of the bigger
investments you
will make when buying a
new kitchen. It needs to
complement the style of

Dont think of ooring as
the nishing touch it can
really afect how the whole
scheme comes together and,

to lay the oor rst, before
installing the kitchen, so try

THE PROJECT
To create a bigger and lighter
kitchen-living space by knocking
out a downstairs WC and adding
French doors and more windows.
Scott found old photographs
of the cottage dating back 100
years, which showed it had once
had a glass roof. This persuaded
the conservation of cer to agree
to the removal of the low ceiling
and the installation of four Velux
roof lights to let in more light.
Oak-framed French doors that
lead out to the garden were put
in at one end of the kitchen.
The broken agstones were
removed, underoor heating was
installed and then red quarry
tiles were laid.
Scott and Graeme bought the
old pine bakers table at auction.
It was lthy with grease so they
had it cleaned with a pressure

hen I inherited this cottage
the kitchen was very dark
the sunlight had vanished by
mid-morning. As the kitchen once had
a glass roof, we were given permission
to put in skylights. We bought the
quarry tiles from a reclamation yard
and had underfloor heating installed
beneath them. We chose high-gloss
white units and white laminate
worktops to lighten the room. We
picked up the Edwardian bakers table
at an auction and
updated it with
a stainless steel
worktop. Our

to change the
colour of the lights

never date. As we all know
very well, planning a new
kitchen is a big investment of
both money and time, so we
want the results to look
good, work beautifully, and
have a certain degree of
exibility. Serial decorators
should head for the white

prove cheaper in the long
term to run. The Aquastar by
Bosch (below) is an attractive
option if youre on a water
meter. It takes just 6.5ltr of
water to wash a full load,
saving you more than 40ltr
when compared with washing
the equivalent by hand.
Wash programmes vary
slightly from machine to
machine, but as a rule there
will be at least three plus a
rinse-only cycle. The main
programme will be a 65c
wash and most machines
include an eco/energy-save
programme to cut down the
amount of water used. CDAs

(below) has ten programmes
including cold soak, quick
wash, bio, intensive,
delicate, two auto
washes and a
super wash,
giving ultimate
exibility.
Most modern
dishwashers
have sensors
that adapt the
programme
according to the
load, detecting
factors such as how
dirty the load is and
reducing or increasing the
temperature, water duration
and amount of rinses.

One of the most exciting
advances in technology is
Fuzzy Logic. This works
by recognising how much
washing is in the drum, then
the temperature, amount of
water and energy, plus the
length of the cycle are all
adjusted accordingly, so you
always get the best results
with minimal waste.
The number of wash
programmes each machine
has will vary, but most
include cottons, synthetics,
delicates, woollens and many
have handwash settings. You
also may benet from mixed
wash programmes, pre-wash,
Eco wash and half load.
The size of the drum is
also important, especially
if you need to wash bulky
items such as duvets. Some
models can hold up to 9kg;
a model such as Gorenjes
WA82145 (below) has a
larger drum and generous
8kg capacity for busy
households, yet still ts
into the same space as a
standard washing machine.

THE PROJECT
To create from a shell a
luxurious en suite bathroom
which includes both a wet room
and bath with a lavish use of
Crema Marl polished marble
on the walls and oor.
Confronted by a blank canvas,
Hayley had to decide which
items went where. She began by
sitting the wet room along the
longest wall and then put the
freestanding bath beneath the
window so she could see the
trees and sky when bathing.
While the couple were on
holiday disaster struck as the
plumbers had never worked with
Hansgrohe products before and
there were problems. Luckily
their plumber Nick who had
done the central heating was
on hand to nish the job.
Pyrford Interiors helped
Hayley create the walnut vanity
unit with drawers, which she
based on a design she had
spotted in the houses of a
nearby new development.
Keep entertained
Richard wanted a very
big shower area and a
wall-hung tv as he liked
the idea of watching the
rugby while in the bath.
Night lights
The couple had sensor
lights put in when they
get up in the night only the
square wall lights come on
and go of automatically.
W
e wanted our en suite to
exude luxury and opulence
with a timeless design and as
we have stayed in some beautiful spa
hotels in Dubai and Oman, we based it
on ones wed seen there. I didnt want
too modern a look as I thought I might
hate it in a couple of years time.
But I did want clean lines and good
quality stone so I visited every stone
showroom in the area to look at the
different options. We bought all the
Crema Marfil and
small mosaic tiles
from Martin Moore
Stone, while all our
sanitaryware came
from Farnham
Bathrooms. It
took four weeks
to install.

THE PROJECT
As Victorian houses often have
walls that are not completely
straight, Ceri and Charles asked
their builder to put up a false
wall to the right of the chimney
breast so that they could have
a corner shower unit installed.
The chimney breast proved
extremely useful as the plumber
was able to conceal much of
the pipework within it.
The original Victorian
cornicing was very elaborate
and Ceri was delighted to nd a
craftsman from The Old English
Cornice Company who could
reproduce the missing sections.
Double glazing was added
to the original sash windows.
Ceri hired some local
carpenters to build the vanity
unit to hold the his and hers
basins, which have travertine
marble tted around them.
An airing cupboard was built
into the corner of the room,
using the original door in the
hallway as its access point.
Room for two
The twin basins are
carefully positioned
in front of the chimney
breast, which conceals
all of the plumbing.
Handy storage
A free-standing shelving
unit beneath the large
sash windows provides
extra storage and ts in
with the traditional look.
T
his used to be a spare bedroom,
but we had a door put into the
adjoining wall of the main
bedroom so we could access it as an
en suite. We asked our builder to put
up a false wall to level up the recess
on one side of the chimney breast and
this now forms one wall of the corner
shower unit. Underfloor heating was
laid under the ceramic floor tiles, and
we were able to find the roll-top bath,
shower and all the sanitaryware at the
same bathroom
stockist, which
saved a lot of
hassle! The wall
tiles were an
expense but Ifelt
they were worth
it as we look at
them every day.

and a short walk from
the hustle and bustle
of central Lisbon. Its
only a ten-minute
drive from the airport
too, so couldnt be in
a better location.
Things to do
Lisbon is truly a city
of culture. Take a bus
tour around the city
for an overall view, or
do your own tour
by tram. There is an
abundance of great
bars and restaurants
to choose from, most
open late into the
night, plus several
great beaches a short
train or bus ride away.
Behind the grand exterior of this huge hotel is a really personal service. Our
rooms were equipped with everything we could possibly need, including
Herms toiletries, a mini bar and a Nespresso machine a godsend after
a day spent trekking around the city! We stayed in a corner room, which
had a breathtaking view of Lisbon. The rooms are luxurious without being
showy; sumptuous velvet in muted tones ofers comfort and style, while
solid wood furniture creates the reassuring feel of a gentlemans study.
The bathroom follows this dark wood theme to great efect, for a really
luxurious look. The hotel restaurant ofers a superb Portuguese menu, and
staf also took the trouble to advise us on which wine would complement
the exquisite food. All in all, a fabulous place in a great location!

powered Easi-Flow pump is worn on

A quick-change supply
tube enables fast and

There was a slight odour
