Answer ONE from Part-A and any THREE from Part-B IS-800-2007 and Structural Steel Tables to be permitted ***** PART-A (Marks-32) 1. a) Design the cross section of a plate girder for the following data. Effective span of the girder = 18m Superimposed loading = 45 kN/m Design the connections also. b) Draw to scale the cross section and longitudinal section of the girder showing the intermediate stiffeners and bearing stiffeners. (OR) 2. A column ISMB 300 carries an axial load of 1000 KN at the base end of the column. The base plate is connected to the column flange by two ISA 100 100 75mm thick angles. Design the slab base for the column. Use M20 concrete and the safe bearing capacity of soil as 200 KN/m2. Draw to scale: a) The top view of the connection b) The side views showing concrete pedestal. PART-B (Marks-48) 3. A beam of clear span 10meters has a bearing of 300mm at each end. It has to carry a superimposed load of 60kN/m Design the section as a plated beam assuming that only 12mm mild steel plates are available. The top flange of the plated beam may be assumed to be laterally restrained at 3m c/c. 4. Design a laterally unsupported beam for an effective span of 7m to carry a superimposed load of 30 kN/m. The ends are restrained against lateral bending and torsion. Check the suggested section for web buckling. 5. Design a laced column for a load carrying capacity of 1000 kN. The effective length of the column is 5m. Use channel sections. Design lacing system also. 6. Design the stiffener at 3m from the end of a plate girder of 10m span. It carries a dead load of 35 kN per meter run and a moving load of 50kN per meter run longer than the span. The web is 160cm 1.2cm in section. Neglect impact. 7. Design a gantry girder for an industrial building to carry an hand operated overhead traveling crane with the following data. Crane capacity is 200 kN. Weight of crane excluding crab is 180 kN. Weight of crab is 5 kN. Span of crane between rails is16 m. Minimum hook approach is1.0 m. Wheel base is 3.0 m. Span of gantry girder is 9 m. PART-B (Marks-48) 3. a) What is the significance of net sectional area in tension members? Draw two probable cross sections of tension members using combination of angles. b) Design a battened column for a load carrying capacity of 1500 kN the effective length of the column is 4.5m. Use channel sections. Design battens system also. 4. A pitched roof is to be provided for an industrial building of effective san 12m. The trusses are spaced at 4m center to center and purlins at 1.6m center to center. The pitch of the roof is 280. The weight of the roofing material is 16 kg/m and the normal wind pressure is 220 kg/m2. Design an angle purlin. 5. a) What are advantages of welding over riveted connections? b) Design a laterally unsupported beam for an effective span of 6.5 m to carry a superimposed load of 35kN/m. A bracket comprising of two plates connecting to both the sides of a column ISMB 300 is carrying load of 200 kN. The load is acting a 150mm from the center of the web of the column and is inclined at 30 degrees to the horizontal. Design the riveted connection. The thickness of the bracket plates is 12mm. 4. a) What are advantages of welding over riveted connections? b) Design a laterally unsupported beam for an effective span of 7m to carry a superimposed load of 30 kN/m. Height of truss above the ground level is 5m and the length of the building is 25m. Assume K1 = 1.0 and K3 = 1.0 and the permeability of the walls as normal.
