Amanda Cupcake, located near New London, is owned and operated by Amanda Wright. She and her cupcakes have been featured on television shows like Good Day Wisconsin and Living With Amy and a variety of radio shows. Help feed area families this Thanksgiving

It doesnt seem like it should be time to think about Thanksgiving already, but the holiday season is quickly approaching. With these hard economic times, more families need help. To date, there are approximately 500 families in Marquette County registered for monthly food distributions (including 30 homebound elderly and/or handicapped families whose food boxes are delivered) and the Care and Share Food Bank of Marquette County receives emergency referrals weekly. This year marks the 16th Annual Adopt a Family for Thanksgiving project. Once again, a local grocer is helping put together a family Thanksgiving Dinner Box (for families to prepare) including the following items: turkey, stuffing, potatoes, yams, Jell-O, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, whipped topping, rolls and margarine. USDA items and vegetables will be added from the food bank. The food boxes will be assembled and distributed by volunteers from the Care and Share Food Bank, N2973 State Hwy. 22 South, Montello (across from the flea market). Distribution will on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Thursdays in November, according to residence. The opportunity to participate in this heart-warming project is extended to all Marquette County churches, organizations, and individuals. If you would like to sponsor a family or families, your contribution can be made out to: Care and Share Food Bank, Attn.: Thanksgiving Project, P.O. Box 405, Montello, WI 53949. The final food order was placed on Nov. 1. The Care and Share Food Bank helps families in need countywide. Waushara County Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) 2013-2014 heating season officially began October 1, 2013 and will run through May 15, 2014. Our office is located at 220 North Oakridge Court, Wautoma. People wishing to schedule an appointment or applicants requiring a home visit should contact our office by calling (920) 787-1830, Monday-Friday, between 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. WHEAP program is desinged to provide a one time benefit to eligible households to help them with their heating costs. The amount of the assistance will be based on the households heating and electric costs, gross income and household size. Households applying for WHEAP benefits will need to provide documented proof of: 1. Picture ID of applicant. 2. Social Security cards for all household members. 3. All gross income for the three (3) months prior to the month in which they apply. 4. Heating and electric costs for the last 12 months or date from September 1, 2012 through August 31, 2013. 5. This Christmas Give Something that Means Something Holiday Mail for Heroes - You Can Make a Difference
This year every household in Waushara County and adjoining counties can make a difference by helping the Red Cross ensure that members of our Armed Forces are remembered this Christmas. You are encouraged to make cards, or you can send a special message in a card you purchased. In order to make cards as meaningful as possible to a wide audience, the Red Cross recommends using titles such as Dear Service Member, Veteran, or Military Family Member, include your heartfelt sentiments and sign all cards. Cards made by groups, school classes, etc. should be bundled in single, large envelopes, excluding small envelopes for individual cards. Please refrain from using glitter when making cards as it can aggravate health issues of wounded recipients. The Red Cross is asking that people not enclose any items with the holiday cards. This is a great project for our county residents and beyond and cards can be dropped off at the Waushara Argus office at W7781 State Rd. 21 & 73, Wautoma. Some of the cards will be distributed locally to area veterans including the residents at Veterans Home at King. Plan now to use this as a project for 4-H, scouting, classrooms, civic clubs, church youth groups, and organizations. It is our hope to gather 10,000 cards in Waushara County for Holiday Mail for Heroes. We need your help in meeting this goal. Deadline for this project is Dec. 1 so they can be packaged and sent to area servicemen and women and veterans and military family members. The family of Lois Walters wishes to thank the many friends who helped Lois and the family, especially during the last months of her life: the Agnesian Hospice nurses who provided special attention and the staff of Rosemore Village who lovingly cared for Lois on a daily basis; Pastor Alyson Janke of Wild Rose Presbyterian Church; Jane Erickson, Mary Williams, and Sherrie Brownlow who sang at the memorial service; those who provided the special types of floral arrangements Lois loved; the ladies of the church who provided a lovely luncheon following the service; those who sent money for memorials; and all who attended her memorial service. Nordic Mountain opens Friday, Nov. 15
Nordic Mountain Ski Hill, Mt. Morris, began making snow on Nov. 11 and will have the Gentle Giant run open on Nov. 15. Bill Ringenoldus, Nordic Mountain General Manager, said this opening is about two weeks earlier than other years and it is the earliest they have opened. The cold nights in the teens have made for great snowmaking. Stop out and enjoy skiing - the base is approximately one foot deep and will make for good ski conditions.
