1. Write your seat number on the cover page. (If you have a bad/broken seat, come up front and ask a proctor to be reseated.) Circle the discussion section you are attending. 2. Check that no page is missing. The exam has xxx problems, one per page; make sure that no page is missing. 3. Rules: Books, notes, etc. are not allowed, and must be securely stowed away (e.g., in a closed backpack). No calculators. No earphones, ipods, or similar devices. 4. Read the problems carefully. All the information you need to solve a problem is given in the statement of the problem. I am willing to entertain questions, but I cannot give hints, explain terminology that was covered in class (what do you mean by component?), or rephrase a problem using dierent terminology. Chances are that all I can say is no comment or ask you to read the problem again because the question is answered in the problem. In the case of multiple choice problems, the answers oered are mutually exclusive, and they exhaust all possibilities, so exactly one of the answers is correct. 5. Write legibly, show all work, and circle/box your nal answer! An answer alone, without justication, will not earn credit. Cross out anything you do not want to be considered for grading (e.g., if you started out on the wrong track). 6. No calculators! Answers can and should be left in raw form, such as 2 5. However, you should simplify as much as possible, and, in particular, evaluate trig values such as sin(/4). 7. Time: You have 50 minutes (until 8:50 am). around 8 minutes per problem. Work eciently and budget your time wisely. None of the problems requires extensive calculations; if you get entangled in a messy computation, you are on the wrong track, and should move on to another problem.

Let L1 be the line in direction of the vector 1, 2, 3 that passes through the point (2, 1, 3). Let L2 be the line in direction of the vector 3, 2, 1 that passes through the point (5, 1, 4). (a) Find the (linear) equation of the plane that is perpendicular to both lines and passes through the origin.

(b) Determine whether the lines L1 and L2 are parallel, skew, or intersect. If they intersect, determine the intersection point.

A bird takes o from a position with coordinates (1, 0, 0) with an initial velocity 0, 1, 2 . It then accelerates with acceleration given by a(t) = cos t, sin t, 0 . at any time t. Compute the following quantities. (a) The velocity of the bird at any time t.

(b) The position of the bird at any time t.

(c) The distance the bird has to travel (i.e., the total length of its ight path, as would be shown on the birds odometer reading) in order to reach a height (i.e., z z -component) of 100.

A particle is moving in space, with r(t), v (t), a(t), denoting, respectively, position, velocity, and acceleration at time t. Suppose that the acceleration is constant, i.e., a(t) = a0 , where a0 is a constant vector. Let V (t) denote the scalar triple product of the three vectors r(t), v (t), a(t). Compute V (t), simplifying as much as possible and explaining all steps of your work. (For example, if you drop a term, state why you can do that. There are several such steps involved in the solution, each requiring an appropriate justication. For full credit all of these steps need to be present.)
