ABOUT US Rock N Roll Composites Ltd.

was incorporated by Saul Buchanan and Graeme Stewart with the objective of designing and manufacturing bespoke architectural and luxury items by combining materials in innovative ways. Our design and manufacturing techniques are tailored specifically for the application with the aim of creating a bespoke piece of art that provokes the user to consider how the delicate geometry is surprisingly weightless and thin but is mutually aesthetically pleasing, functional and structural. Our services offer you assistance to visualise your ideas with regards application, geometry, function, materials, surface finish and the cost of your bespoke piece. Next we design how the materials can be combined together and devise the manufacturing process to employ in order to produce the finished bespoke article. We are fully engaged from the beginning to the end of all projects with our in-house design and manufacture facilities located within the United Kingdom. We offer a free no obligation consultation and delight at the opportunity to collaborate with other designers and companies to provide them with manufacturing services for their innovative projects.

This electronic brochure illustrates a small portfolio of the material combinations possible where these are available to be seen and held. All example combinations are moulded into solid composite materials that are both aesthetically pleasing and structural/self supporting. Every effort has been made to reproduce the size, colour and texture of the physical samples but they do vary slightly from the real thing. Please feel free to ask any questions regarding the examples shown in this portfolio or alternative materials and finishes that you may have in mind.

Fusion of exotic materials

A hybrid material featuring a fusion of Brazilian Walnut wood veneer and aesthetic plain woven carbon fibre. The Brazilian Walnut is a rich brown with a sometimes blistered and varied pattern. The finished texture extenuates the feeling of the actual wood grain and gives a feeling of real depth. The carbon fibre offers the necessary strength for such hybrid material combinations that are beautifully delicate whilst being functional. The carbon fibre finish is smooth with a high gloss where the aesthetics and performance can be tailored by selecting different weave styles. .

This hybrid material combines beautiful Zebrano wood veneer with aesthetic plain woven carbon fibre. Zebrano or Zebrawood has a beautiful straight grain and is a great way to ensure a consistent look for any project. Its colour is straw to dark brown where the finished texture maximises the natural feel of the wood grain. The carbon fibre offers the necessary strength for such hybrid material combinations that are beautifully delicate whilst being functional. The carbon fibre finish is smooth with a high gloss where the aesthetics and performance can be tailored by selecting different weave styles.

Woven fabrics and different weave styles

Woven fabrics create a synergy of aesthetic appeal and performance and are more than mere decoration. This example demonstrates Dynanotext fabric laminated with a 5 harness satin woven carbon fibre fabric. The Dynanotex fabric shown is 100% carbon fibre woven in a chequered style and in addition is available as a beautiful carbon fibre and natural cork hybrid. The 5 harness satin carbon fibre fabric is particularly suited to projects that have a lot of curvature as it is extremely pliable for draping over complex shapes. The layers of fabric having been stacked are infused with an aerospace grade resin system for superior performance.

Hybrid Combinations
The swatch shown is a fusion of eco-friendly flax fabric and carbon fibre. The combination of natural and man-made materials complements each other perfectly with respect to the aesthetic finish and superior functional performance. This combination of natural flax fabric with carbon fibre is particularly suited to projects that require added strength and rigidity in addition to vibration dampening and sound attenuation. .

Natures fabrics and eco-friendly materials

Natural flax fabric comes from the flax plant that historically was grown extensively in Ireland although nowadays comes from France and Belgium. The flax fibres woven into the fabric shown are strong, flexible, possess great dampening performance, biodegradable and are lighter than carbon fibre. The swatch shown consists of pure flax fibre infused with a resin but for added performance is often fused with other man-made fabrics such as carbon fibre. .

The thread of rock! This swatch features a fabric woven from threads that have been formed from volcanic rock. The threads of this natural fabric are spun from naturally occurring basalt rock. The raw basalt originates from the lava of ancient volcanoes that erupted and formed columns the world over and most famously at the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland and Fingals Cave, Inner Hebrides in Scotland. Basalt is extremely robust and offers a natural dark gloss finish. This is a great choice in projects that demand a consistent solid texture owing to the fine denier of basalt thread used to weave the fabric.

Make it unique!

Individual logos, text and illustrations can be incorporated into the finished piece. This is not painted, lacquered, glued nor digitally printed onto your bespoke piece. Instead your personalised design is infused with the structural materials during design and manufacturing thus becoming an integral part of the material itself. The finish can be translucent to work with lighting arrangements or have a solid finish.

High performance and decorative woven fabrics

Coloured carbon fibre is a decorative and high performance fabric. The sample shown comprises of a subtle dark green fibre interwoven with black carbon fibres in a twill style weave. Other colours available include blue/black, red/black and yellow/black.

This swatch comprises of woven aluminised and translucent glass fabrics that have been laminated and infused with a transparent matrix that results in a high performance and aesthetic material finish. The aluminised glass fabric layer results in a silver look.
