Introduction: When you look at pictures of early homes, you may find it difficult to
realize that they were “home” to real families. Our country began in Native American
lodges, log cabins, and quaint New England farmhouses. These homes also form the
roots of today’s architectural styles.

role. Architects and builders have often looked to the past for inspiration. Housing styles

needs of an aging population and a greater concern for resource conservation.
