3D Origami Swan This 3D origami swan was made with 400+ sheets of paper each folded into a small

triangle. This type of paper folding is called Golden Venture Folding or Chinese aper Folding.

Golden Venture Folding Triangular Units

. #. %. ". &. '. ).

There are a variety of ways to make the basic triangular unit, but the method shown here is probably the most efficient in its use of paper. This is particularly important when you are making models that require hundreds of triangular units. !tart with a square sheet of paper and cut it into " strips. Fold the strips in half crosswise. Fold the bottom$left and bottom$right edges up to meet the midline. Turn the model over. Fold the top$left and top$right corners towards the middle of the unit. Fold the triangular tab down on both sides. Fold the right side onto left side. The directionality is critical here. (o not fold the left side behind the right half. *hen done, the unit should have two tabs and two pockets.

Fold !etween 400 and 4"0 triangular units #instructions here$. These can !e made while watching TV% while sitting in the !us% or while ha&ing coffee'tea with a friend. (n a classroom setting% )0 students can easily fold )0 units each to ma*e a total of 400 units.

+ote that there are ) slits which are called ,poc*ets,. -nits are connected !y inserting the pointy parts into the poc*ets. There are ) ways to position the triangular units. osition ./ the triangle rests on the short edges of the triangle with the poc*ets still &isi!le. osition 0/ triangle rests on the !road edge of the triangle/ similar to a mountain1 poc*ets are also &isi!le.

Row 1: !egin !y arranging 30 2 3" triangular units in a row. These units will !e 3ow 4 of the swan. The num!er of units you use will depend on the thic*ness of the paper used. (n this e5ample% 30 units were used. Row 2: connect 3ow 4 into a ring !y using ,connector, triangular units. These connector units will !ecome 3ow ) of swan. To do this/ 2 place two 3ow 4 units side !y side in position .1 2 insert the points into the poc*ets of a connector unit #also in position .$ 2 this forms a cluster of 3 units

Continue in this manner/ 2 place the cluster made a!o&e !eside another 3ow24 unit1 2 connect them together with another triangular unit1 2 this forms a cluster of " pieces.

3epeat until all 3ow 4 units ha&e !een assem!led. Connect the first and last pieces together to form a ring. .t this point you would ha&e used 30 units for 3ow 4 and 30 connector units which ma*e up 3ow ) of the origami swan.

Turn the ring o&er so it no longer loo*s li*e a cone/ now it loo*s more li*e the !ottom of a !owl. Row 3: continue assem!ling the !ody of the 3D origami swan !y adding more triangular units. +ote that the triangular units are now added while in position B. 0e sure to insert the points of two different units into one connector unit. (nter2loc*ing the units in this manner will *eep the 3D origami swan !ody together.

6hown/ half of 3ow 3 assem!led. +ote how you can identify where the ne5t piece goes !y counting the layers. 0ottom right shows 3 layers #7 3 rows$ while top left shows ) layers of units #7 only ) rows assem!led$.

Rows 4 to 6: Continue adding more triangular units until you ha&e completed 3ows 4% "% and 8. Row 7: .dd triangular units to form 3ow 9 as a!o&e. 3emo&e ) triangular units across from one another. 6hown/ the units at ,4) ocloc*, and ,8 ocloc*, ha&e !een remo&ed.

Rows 8 - 20: continue to add more triangular units row after row. (n each row% use one less triangular unit. The 3D origami swan will get more and more narrow forming two triangular wing sections. 3ow )0 will only ha&e one triangular unit on each side/ it is the tip of the swan:s wing. .s you assem!le% allow the pieces to cur&e naturally to form a !owl2li*e shape. Head and Ne !: connect appro5imately 30 triangular units in a linear manner. osition the units in position . and insert one unit into the poc*ets of a second unit. .llow the pieces to cur&e naturally. . ;uestion mar* shape wor*s well% !ut other nec* shapes are fine. "ai#: simply connect 4 or " triangular units in mountain position #position 0$. Depending on what the 3D origami swan will !e used for% you may wish to add a drop of glue in each triangular unit of the nec*. The nec* is the most fragile part of the 3D origami swan so glue is good. Glue is not needed for the !ody and wings of the swan.

(nsert the nec* at the ,8 ocloc*, position. (nsert the tail at the ,4) o:cloc*, position. <ptional/ you can fold a !lac* sheet of paper into a triangular unit and use this as the swan:s !ill #insert in position 0$. =ou can also em!ellish with googlie eyes.

These step$by$step quilling instructions will allow you to make these basic shapes-

Tight Coil

Loose Coil

Eccentric Coil

Teardrop

Eye

Half Moon

Crescent

Triangle

Square

Beehive

How to Make a Tight Coil Gather the following items$ strips of paper ./ or 0 inches wide1 of varying colors $ a slotted quilling tool, $ a drop of white glue on a piece of scrap paper and $ a toothpick. . ,nsert the end of the paper into the slot of the quilling tool. #. Turn the slotted tool towards you. 2lace your thumb or inde3 finger at the very tip of the slotted tool- this will prevent the paper from slipping off the tool. Use the other fingers to guide the strip of paper so that it rolls into an even plug .called a tight coil1. %. *hen done, turn the slotted tool a quarter turn away from you. 2ull the plug out of the slotted tool. 4intthe coil comes off the tool neatly if you pull the coil off the tool and not pull the tool out of the coil. ". Use a toothpick to apply a small smidgen of glue onto the free end of the tight coil. Use your finger, a clean toothpick, or forceps to press the free end onto the coil. &. *hen dry .about & seconds1, you will have a tight coil. These can be used to make flowers, grapes, eyes and more. How to Make Loose Coils and Basic Shapes Loose Coil- To make a loose coil, simply roll a strip of paper as above. 5nce you have removed the coil from the slotted quilling tool, immediately release the coil so that it can unravel. The tight coil will rela3 into a loose coil. ,f your coil remains tightly wound, you need to work faster and release the coil before the curves have set. 6fter the coil has rela3ed, apply glue and secure the loose end as above. Teardrop- To make the basic shapes, pinch the loose coil at the proper location. (on7t be afraid to pinch your loose coil $ teardrops and eyes are very easy to make. !quares and triangles require a little more practice to ensure equal distances between the corners. 8oose coils can be pinched into other shapes such as holly, he3agon, duck feet, and so forth. Eccentric Loose Coil- 9ake a loose coil as above. Use a clean toothpick or a pin to compress the rounds of paper towards one side of the coil. 6pply glue all along the top of the coil where the rounds meet.

4old the shape for : seconds before releasing. 9aking an eccentric coil is easier if you have a circle template, a cork board, or forceps. ;ead about tools here1. Beehive- 9ake a tight coil as above. Use the back$end of the slotted quilling tool to push the layers of paper away from one another. <ou can also use other implements such as the eraser$end of a pencil, or a round$ended ball$point pen.
