Rolling Element Bearing Maintenance Exercise Guide

Exercise E204-S03-EXR-DFT.wpd

Introduction to Bearing Identification Systems

Objective
Given a bearing number, including the prefixes and suffixes, use the manufacturers charts to identify the bearing type, series or duty rating, bore size, type of hardware (e.g., shields, seals, snap rings) accompanied with the bearing and internal clearance dimension (space between the rolling element and the outer race).

Performance Standard
Using the IPT Industrial Trades Training Manual, the bearing codes supplied, and the bearings in the DAC Bearing Maintenance Trainer package correctly identify the bearings using the bearing numbering system. identify bearings with special modifications (e.g., different seals or materials, split rings, or tapered bore) using the standardized prefixes and suffixes.

Foundation Competencies
Basic understanding of rolling element bearing terminology (Exercise E204-S01) and bearing types (Exercise E204-S02)

Required Background Reading

Introductory Discussion
Rolling element bearings are distinguished by their type, design, special parts, accuracy, and clearance. Most bearing manufacturers use the Anti-Friction Bearing Manufacturers Association (AFBMA) system for identifying bearings. The system includes standardized prefixes, suffixes, and descriptive codes to help the bearing user find the right bearing for a specific application. These sets of standardized prefixes and suffixes appear on the bearings themselves, and in chart or table form. The first digit of the main number (or first two digits) identifies the type of bearing. The most common rolling element bearing is the single row, radial, deep groove, ball bearing. Most manufacturers use the number 6 to designate this type of bearing. The next number identifies the series, or duty rating, such as 100 (for extralight duty), 200 (for light duty), 300 (for medium duty), or 400 (for heavy duty). The last two numbers refer to the diameter (size) of the bearings bore in millimeters. The first four must be memorized. 00 01 02 03 = = = = 10mm 12mm 15mm 17mm

W hen the last two digits of the main bearing number are 04 or larger, simply multiply the double digit number by five for the bore size in millimeters, i.e., 04 = 20mm, 10 = 50mm, and 24 = 120mm. Alphanumeric characters at the end of the bearing number indicate hardware,

such as shields, seals, and snap rings. Some designations include Z, one shield; 2Z, two shields; RS, one seal; 2RS, two seals; D, splitter inner ring. Bearing clearances are often shown, as well, away from the bearing number. C1 and C2 bearings have less than normal clearances, while C3, C4, and C5 indicate greater than normal clearances. Normal internal clearance bearings do not have C numbers. Being familiar with these standardized designations is important, if the bearing user is to find the appropriate bearing for a particular requirement.

Performance Steps
Step 1. Define what the standard prefixes and suffixes mean for the following bearing codes using the chart on pages 190, 191, and 192 of the IPT Training Manual or the supplementary designations listed on pages 38 - 41 of the SKF Bearing Maintenance Handbook: Identify the following prefixes: K - denotes cage with rolling elements, completely assembled. R - denotes rings of cylindrical and tapered roller bearings with roller set, ring not separable. W - denotes housing washer (large bore washer) of thrust ball bearing. Define the following suffixes: K - denotes a tapered bore. RS - denotes one seal. Define the following roller bearing designations: 42 - denotes a deep groove ball bearing, double row type, width or height series 2, diameter series 2. M - denotes a single row, angular contact ball bearing, width or height series 0, diameter series 2. Define the type of rolling element bearing, the series or duty

rating, and the bore diameter for the following bearings supplied with the DAC Bearing Maintenance Trainer. Also identify the supplementary bearing information from the suffixes listed. 1. #6313ZZ 2. #7313BMG 3. #22212 CCK/W 33

Summary
You have now learned to use standardized prefixes and suffixes to identify bearing types. Successful use of manufacturers charts and bearing codes allows faster identification of bearings and their components, and, therefore, more efficient maintenance and replacement of these important units.

Optional Tasks
Find other bearings in the selection supplied with the DAC Bearing Maintenance Trainer or at your location and identify them, using the chart of standardized prefixes and suffixes in the IPT Training Manual. Note: Older bearings may be difficult to identify because they may carry manufacturers numbers which were used prior to adoption of the AFBMA standard in 1978.
