INDONESIA: SOLAR HOME SYSTEMS PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS FOR SOLAR HOME SYSTEMS September 2002
1. Solar Home System Hardware Description 1.1. The Solar Home System (SHS) is intended to provide the user with a convenient means of supplying power for small electrical loads such as lights, radio/cassette players or TV. typical SHS operates at a rated voltage of 1! Vdc and provides power for fluorescent luminaires, radio/cassette players, small "lac# and white TV or similar low$power appliance for a"out three to five hours a day. dditionally, other types of luminaires, 1! Vdc or lower voltage soc#et outlets or a %&/ & inverter may "e supplied as options. 'ach SHS consists of one or more photovoltaic ((V) modules with an output of 1) *p or more charging a 1! Vdc lead$acid "attery along with luminaires, related electronic and electrical components and mounting hardware. The SHS is pac#aged and pre$wired to provide convenient installation at a remote customer home site "y a +ualified technician. The system is constructed such that a user can perform routine maintenance such as adding "attery water and replacing light "ul"s and fuses, and a technician can easily perform system diagnostics or replace components.

2. Certification Requirements !.1. 2.2. SHS components or systems that "ear the (hotovoltaic 1lo"al pproval (rogram ((V 1 () 5ar# or Seal will "e accepta"le for use in the SHS (ro/ect. 3. Recommended Best Practices This section provides a minimum set of re+uirements that shall "e followed in the design, specification and installation of the +ualified SHS. They form a set of 8-est (ractices9 which when followed will ensure ade+uate levels of safety, performance, relia"ility and system lifetime. Suppliers are re+uired to adhere to these -est (ractices in order to participate in the ,ndonesia SHS (ro/ect. 3 3.1. PV a). "). odule !nstallation ,f more than one module is used, identical models shall "e used and they shall "e connected in parallel. :or SHS installed permanently on a structure (in contrast with porta"le units); i. ii. The modules must "e framed in such a way as to allow secure connection to the module mounting structure. The array mounting structure will hold the photovoltaic module(s). The module(s) must "e mounted on a support structure made of corrosion resistant material that assures sta"le and secure attachment.

iii. The (V array and support structure must "e a"le to withstand wind gusts up to 1)) #m/hour without damage. iv. The structure must "e mounted at a fi2ed angle and oriented to ma2imi0e the useful energy supplied to the user during the design month (i.e., the month with the worst average daily insolation). rray orientation must "e ad/usta"le in the field. v. The structure will incorporate corrosion resistant hardware for all e2ternal connections. These include the modules to structure, structure to pole and pole to "uilding attachments.

3.2 Circuit Protection and C#ar$e Controls

Systems must include a means to protect users and system components from the following; i. -attery overcharge and e2cessive water loss. ii. -attery undercharge and e2cessive deep discharge. iii. &ircuit protection against short circuit of any load. iv. &ircuit protection against reverse polarity of any load. v. &ircuit protection against reverse polarity of module or "attery. vi. &ircuit protection against internal shorts in charge controller, inverter or other devices. vii. &ircuit protection against damage "y the high (V open circuit voltage when it is connected to the controller without "attery. viii. (rotection of controls against lightning induced transients. i2. =ight time discharge of the "attery due to reverse current through the array.

&quipment &nclosure a). "). The e+uipment enclosure(s) will house the "atteries, charge controller, charge indicators, low voltage disconnect, and all interconnecting wiring. This compartment must "e "uilt strong enough to accommodate the weight of the "attery. The compartment or enclosure design must allow the internal electronic e+uipment to operate within accepta"le operating temperature limits. The SHS supplier must o"tain the (V system e+uipment and components, assem"le and wire them into integrated pac#aged SHS in accordance with the proposed design, and deliver the pac#aged SHS to the user. The supplier will "e responsi"le for settling any shipping related damaged claims and will "e responsi"le for replacing damaged systems in a timely manner.

Annex 1 SOLAR HOME SYSTEMS COMPONENT SPECIFICATIONS


1. -eneral 1.1. The supplier will provide at a minimum a si2 month warranty against manufacturers defects on all system integrated parts and la"or e2cluding fuses or end$use devices such as luminaire or lamps. 3n all ma/or individual components, manufacturers warranties will "e passed through to the user. Specifically, the (V modules should "e warranted against reduction of output of no more than 1) percent of rated capacity over a minimum of ten year period. The charge controller, low voltage disconnect, switches, and charge indicators should "e warranted for at least one year. The "attery should "e warranted for at least si2 months. -attery end$of$life will "e determined when the "attery capacity down to 1.A4 V/cell at !4 degrees centigrade drops to less than ?) percent of the initial rated capacity. ll warranties will start from the day the system is accepted "y the user. 1.!. =ominal system voltage (rated voltage) shall "e 1! 6.1. The photovoltaic array will consist of one or more flat$plate photovoltaic modules. 'ach module should comprise of no less than 67 series$connected single or poly$ crystalline silicon solar cells. :lat plate thin$film modules could also "e used. The photovoltaic array should have a pea# power output of at least 1) *p, under Standard Test &onditions (ST&) as defined in ,'& 7)F)<$1. The pea# power output for thin film modules should "e the value after light soa#ing. The SHS must "e protected against damage caused "y short circuit of the input and output terminals, and reverse polarity of connections. 3ver$current protection must "e provided to prevent pea# current to four times the ma2imum e2pected continuous current. >ightning induced surge protection is recommended. Some means must "e provided to safely disconnect the "attery and the module during servicing or repair "y a technician.

Vdc is suita"le for safe operation of automotive$type lead$acid "atteries used in SHS in ,ndonesia. %ischarge of automotive$type lead$acid "atteries "elow a depth of discharge of 4)B of rated capacity must "e avoided.

The electrical waveform at the fluorescent lamp terminals must "e symmetrical in time to within 1) percent (i.e., 7)B/<)B waveform ma2imum difference in symmetry over the voltage range of 11.) to 1!.4 Vdc at an am"ient temperature of !4 degree &). The ma2imum crest factor (ratio of ma2imum pea# to .5S voltage of the waveform applied to the fluorescent lamp) shall "e less than !. The input connections to the inverter should prevent the application of voltage with reverse polarity, or the inverter should "e protected against damage when the rated voltage is applied with reverse polarity.
