Theindividualchartelementsvary:sometimesyoullseesegmentedcolumnsandsometimesyoullsee normalcolumns. Thepositioningofthesmallerbarsthatbridgerevenueorothermetricsinbetweenthesetwoyears mayalsodiffer,andyoullseedifferentconventionsusedbydifferentgroupsandcompanies. However,thepurposeofwaterfallchartsisalwaysthesame:todemonstratevisuallyhowacompany cangrow(ordecline)fromyeartoyear,andwhereadditionalrevenueorprofitiscomingfrom. Thefirstexerciseismorecomplexsincewetrackrevenueovermultipleyearsandsincewerebuildingin supportforbothnegativeandpositivecontributions.However,thesecondexercisehasanadded complicationsincewerebuildinginsupportforconnectorlinesinbetweenthecolumnsinthechart.
