student and the Paculty was recently
held on the 24th of September. A
also present at the dlalogue. The
purpose of the gatherlng was a
chance for the students to get to
know the faculty further and ask
questlons regardlng P|AT and the
Unlverslty. The sesslon started of wlth
a presentatlon about the faculty by
the Dean, Prof. Ahmad Anwar,
followed by an lntroductlon to the 4
S8P, S8S and S8T. A questlon and
answer sesslon was held after the
presentatlons, and the students had
-
catlon on varlous lssues such as study-
lng ln UMK 1ell campus, [ob prospects,
almost 2 hour dlalogue ended wlth a
llght late nlght refereshment.
Conference on Pood Securlty
wltnessed the slgnlng of a letter of
lntent between UMK-Agrlculture
Chemlcals Malaysla 8hd (ACM) and
UMK-Hexagon green.
A ma[or player ln the agrlcul-
ture lndustry ln Malaysla, malnly
supplylng of chemlcals and fertlllzers,
and also mechanlzatlon system
Penang. The company ls well known
among rlce farmers has also ventured
lnto other crops. Apart from the
research laboratory at lts headqua-
ters, ACM ls also a proud owner of a
Kedah. The lntentlon wlll hopefully
see new arrangements between ACM
and UMK, partlcularly for P|AT wlll be a
tremendous and strateglc partner-
shlp that wlll see future collaboratlon
ln research and development and also
commerclallzatlon. The partnershlp
and student to have quallty lntenshlp.
The LO| slgned by ACM actlng General
Manager, Mr. Mohd Zlkrl and UMK vC,
Prof. Datuk. Dr. Paduan Che Pose.
The lntent wlth Hexagon
Green was slgned by lts Dlrector, Dr.
Md usuf Husln, whlle UMK was repre-
sented by the vC. Hexagon Green can
be consldered an lnovatlf company
that has now managed tocreate l
mllllon tlssue cultured plantlets
(lnvltro plantlng materlals) has been
produced and supplled from lts labo-
ratory at Nuclear malaysla Technol-
ogy Park, 8angl, Selangor for the last
5 years. Slnce 2008, lts 5-acre com-
8uklt Changgang Agroteknologl
Park, 8antlng, Selangor has been
exportlng more than 500,000 stalks.
Hexagon Green Group's anual
revenue also generated from sales of
and vanllla starter plants, tralnlng
courses, plant clonlng servlces and
consultancy. Hexagon Green
locally (20%) and overseas (80%).
Presh orchlds are generated through
a network of commerclal farms
throughout the country (malnly ln
Selangor, Pahang, Negerl Sembllan
and 1ohor). Growers are to be
supplled by Hexagon Green only
tlssue-cultured plantlng materlals
and to be tralned as well as gulded
technlcally and professlonally. The
slze of farms ranges from l Ac to 50
Ac operated by vendors, lncubators
and corporatlons. The coorperatlon
P|AT ln applylng not only blotehnol-
ogy ln agrlculture, but also the entre-
preneurlal aspect. Pecently, Dr. Md
usuf Husln was recently appolnted
an ad[unct Professor wlth P|AT, and
has been consulted to lnltlate an
orchld farm at the Agropark ln the
UMK 1ell Campus.
|t ls hope both LO| wlll lead
to further engagement between
UMK especlally P|AT wlth the lndus-
try.

Dialogue with the DEAN
vletnam, Malaysla and other coun-
trles such as 8angladesh, 8razll, 1apan,
|ndla and |ndonesla. we recelved a
good mlxture of government,
academla, prlvate sector and NGO.
|ndeed, there ls a growlng
concern about the sustalnablllty of
the food lndustry and the unlntended
the envlronment, communltles and
human health. Thls conference gave
us a better understandlng of the
elements that contrlbute to the food
securlty agenda. Countrles, partlcu-
larly ASLAN need to balance local and
delocallsed productlon wlth lmports
and thelr envlronmental lmpacts.
Suppllers need to ensure year-long
provlslon at both low cost and hlgh
quallty for dlscernlng and needy
consumers. Hence, thls conference
has enabled experts from govern-
ment and prlvate sectors to explore
-
rlty lncludlng cllmate change, ecosys-
tem servlces and reslllence, and
resources usage.
One of the co-hosts - 8LPNAS
ls the key GLC lnvolved wlth staple
graln (rlce) and serves as the "rlce
lnstltutlon" rather than a "rlce shop".
|ts maln functlon lncludes promotlng
-
clent supply of rlce. Thls conference ls
a cruclal learnlng and development
platform for both
academla/government agencles and
prlvate sectors throughout the ASLAN
reglon to share and wlden thelr tech-
nlcal know-how.
The conference also empha-
slzed on agro based sources, post-
harvest technologles, lnternatlonal
pollcles and sustalnable use of natural
resources and food productlon.
Plnally, the take-home message on
focused on answerlng the above
questlon, "wlll we produce enough
to adequately feed our people!"Thls
questlon was ln llne wlth the theme
of the conference, "Sharlng responsl-
bllltles towards ensurlng food secu-
rlty ln the reglon". The panel and
partlclpants were optlmlstlc that
each ASLAN country ls movlng ln the
rlght dlrectlon ln securlng food ln a
sustalnable manner. Thls ls achleved
through better agrlcultural plannlng
and sustalnable resource use (water,
land and energy blodlverslty) and
utlllzatlon ln crop, llvestock and
aquaculture productlon.
|t ls lndeed tlmely that both
Unlversltl Malaysla Kelantan and the
Department of Agrlculture, MOA
collaborated to glve promlnence on
thls global lssue of securlng food
sustalnably. Paculty of Agro-8ased
|ndustry strlves to lnstll entrepre-
neurlal attrlbutes and mould future
leaders of the agro-based lndustrles
partlcularly ln food productlon and
related agrlcultural products. Pecog-
nlzlng the lmportance of thls sector
ln the natlonal agrlcultural develop-
ment and ln the reglon, the Paculty ls
Applled Sclence 'dual' degree
programme ln Pood Technology and
Securlty ln collaboratlon wlth the
Prlnce of Songkla Unlverslty,
Thalland next September 20l4.
The last day of the confer-
ence saw l4 papers belng presented
ln three parallel sesslon, Crop
Productlon, Anlmal and Aquaculture
Productlon, and Technlcal papers. A
wrap-up sesslon was later chalred by
the UMK 1ell Campus Dlrector, Prof.
