How do plot devices affect a Novel? How does the plot help the reader understand the characters? Unit Goals and Objectives: 1. Students will complete close readings in order to understand how Novels can relate to today. 2. Students will collaborate in groups to talk about relation to Novels/Narratives. 3. Students will complete various assignments to prove their knowledge of Novels.

Unit Summary:

How does literature help us better understand ourselves? In this unit we will continually ask and answer this question when studying Novels. Not only will we relate the novels to our lives in the 21st century, but we will analyze and evaluate how these Narratives related to the lives of people in the time period in which they were written.

Lesson 1 Student Learning Objective: To learn the different genres of Novels we will be studying. Acceptable Evidence: Students will show what they knew prior to lecture and after lecture. Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Organization Interaction Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Organization Presentation Interaction Lesson Activities: KWL Chart- Students will make a KWL Chart of what they know abou these genres prior to learning about them, what they want to know, and what they learned. Guided Notes- Students will complete the notes attached below the teacher lecture in order to learn more in depth about the novel. Lesson Activities: Multimedia Project- Students will complete a project in groups focused on one novel showing how old themes relate to todays world. Quiz- Students will take a quiz on one novel the class has gone over. Webquest- Students will complete the webquest with the given websites to find the information. Quizlett- Students will use Quizlett in order to help them prepare for a vocabulary quiz. Quiz- Students will be quizzed on the second book the class has gone over. Lesson Activities: Graphic Organizer- Students will show their understanding of the three novels the class has gone over by completing a graphic organizer of the genre, theme, and plot of each novel. Unit Test- Students will be tested on their entire knowledge of the unit, covering the three different novels as well as information on genres, and parts of novels; theme, plot, etc.

Lesson 2 Student Learning Objective: To focus on specific novels and relate each to life as a teen today. Acceptable Evidence: Students will show their relation through projects and quizzes to prove their knowledge of the subject and readings.

Lesson 3 Student Learning Objective: To make sure the Students understand the genre, theme, and plot of the types of novels.
