Darfur Genocide

When, where, and why?



The Darfur genocide started in the spring of 2003. The genocide occurred in the Darfur region of Sudan, the largest country in Africa.

The genocide occurred as a result of rebellions against the Sudanese government for not protecting the sedentary people from nomadic people who attacked them.

Who were the victims?

The victims are Darfuri men, women, and children from the tribal villages of the Fur, Masalit and Zaghwa.

About 2.5 million victims are displaced. - About 460,000 alone were displaced this year in 2013 The number of deaths are between 200,000 and 400,000 people.

Who were the perpetrators?


Main perpetrators were the Janjaweed and the government, that didnt respond to the violence of the Janjaweed. The Janjaweed are Arab tribesman, also known as devils on horseback. The Janjaweed burn villages, and the Janjaweed air force bombs villages.

Were there any attempts to stop it?


President George W. Bush called to double the troops in Darfur to more efficiently aid the Darfurians. Britain made attempts to get the Sudan Government to cooperate. Being allies with Sudan, China and Russia interfered with the peace attempts in order to keep their ally.

What ended it?

It is an ongoing genocide. (2003-present)
