The course has four assessment components as described above. Midterm exam: it will be conducted on week 9 of the semester. The midterm exam will have 4 questions of approximately 20 minutes duration each. Assignment component: 3-4 assignments will be given throughout the semester that will focus on learning outcomes related to knowledge & understanding, practical and intellectual skills. The assignments must be submitted 1-2 weeks after it is given out. Final Exam component: it will consist of 5 questions of 3 hours duration. 40% ruling: Supplementary exam: Lecturer Objective Applicable Applicable (on the final exam only)

Learning Outcomes

This unit aims to: 1. Introduce the concepts of probability theory and the concept of reliability 2. Understand failure analysis describing its causes and preventive measures. 3. Describe and understand the process of reliability evaluation for different configuration of engineering systems. 4. Understand the concept of Markov processes and its different types. 5. Identify different methods and techniques to reduce failures rates. Upon the completion of this module, the student will be able to: 1. Define the concept of reliability in terms of probability distribution models. 2. Describe the different types of failures modes and its measures. 3. Evaluate the reliability of different engineering systems and its various configurations. 4. Perform failure modelling using Markov processes. 5. Describe methods and techniques to reduce failures and its implications.
