At Pella Corporation, were committed to continuous improvement and customer satisfaction. As a responsible corporate citizen, manufacturing quality windows and doors, were committed to responsibly using resources, as well as safeguarding the communities and environments in which Pella operates. Pella takes a comprehensive approach that maximizes recycling opportunities, minimizes waste and pollution, reduces consumption, employs the latest in waste management and recycling strategies, and ensures that products made by Pella are made to last. Pellas commitment to environmental stewardship is firmly rooted in our culture, and has been since the company was established in 1925. Founder Pete Kuypers words in 1950 still ring true today. We recognize our responsibilities as stewards of our natural resources and the environment, and will avoid wasteful or harmful disregard of the environmental effects of our operations.

Committed to sustainable forestry management and stewardship.

Forests play a critical role in the quality of life within the global ecosystem. Pella continues to support sustainable forestry management and is committed to conserving natural resources, including efforts to preserve old growth and ancient rain forests. For Pella, there are several fundamental aspects to forest stewardship: responsible procurement, efficient wood utilization, and wood byproduct management. Responsible procurement means using sustainable sources and working with those vendors who practice responsible harvest and replenishment. Pella recognizes four major certification systems: Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Program, the Pan European Forest Certification (PEFC) Council, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). Pella encourages its wood vendors to seek third-party certification, which demonstrates a commitment to the environment and an awareness of the need for forward planning. Typically, more than 80 percent of the lumber purchased by Pella Corporation comes from sources that are certified. Efficient wood utilization means Pella manufacturing engineers work to optimize yield from the lumber we purchase by using innovative design strategies and technology. Wood byproduct management means Pella strives to recycle or reuse the sawdust created through manufacturing whenever possible. Pella uses these same principles of responsible procurement, efficient utilization and byproduct management when working with wood or alternative materials like engineered fiberglass or vinyl.

How Pella seeks to eliminate or reuse waste.

Resource Recycling Program At Pella Corporation, we know it is essential to voluntarily implement processes that promote good recycling practices. Thats why we use our most valuable resource our people who are dedicated to reducing waste, increasing recycling opportunities, and maximizing Pellas commitment to the environment. Its not only good business; its good for business. And its the right thing to do! Pella has a comprehensive recycling process in place to minimize our use of nonrenewable resources. These materials fall into one of two categories: those recycled and sold for reuse, or those recycled for waste reduction. Every Pella Corporation manufacturing operation practices environmental stewardship. Wood Pella goes to extraordinary lengths to use its wood efficiently. High-tech laser scanning, finger jointing, and recycling assure even the smallest pieces of wood are used responsibly in our products. Pella goes to extraordinary lengths to use its wood efficiently, and in the last five years alone, these processes have utilized 10 percent savings in reclaimed materials. The waste wood materials (sawdust) created by Pellas manufacturing process is captured for recycling into many different products such as plastics, pet bedding, felt roofing, fire logs, ceramics, floor tiles and cleaning products. Wood pallets are also recycled. Office Paper/Cardboard/Packaging Materials Pella recycles corrugated cardboard, packaging materials and office paper monthly, which keeps these materials from entering local landfills and helps generate renewable resources. The Pella, Iowa, facility alone recycles around 850 tons of cardboard and 125 tons of paper annually. Batteries Pella Corporation recycles all types of batteries used in its operations, including forklift batteries, batteries from laptop computers and cell phones, and lithium- and alkaline-type batteries. Batteries are collected and sent to a vendor for recycling. Plastic Plastic scrap from ends and spool ends are recycled. Nearly all of the shrink-wrap used to protect Pella products during shipping is collected, baled and recycled. Plastic ends and spools go back to the vendor to be reused, and plastic shrink-wrap is recycled into other plastic products.

Resource Recycling Program (continued) Solvents and Paints Pella recycles the solvents used in its painting operations and wood preservation process. It uses leftover paint from one coating operation as a new paint in a similar operation through a colorizing process. This generates savings in materials, transportation and disposal and, most important, results in less impact on the environment. Solvent-collection devices on automatic paint systems collect and recycle solvent normally sprayed and considered as waste during a paint color change. This system decreases emissions and improves solvent recycling. What is collected as waste paint is recycled through a licensed fuel-blending operation that provides fuel for cement kilns. Pella captures and recycles these types of waste through selected vendors. Powder-coat paint, used on products like Pella Impervia , is very environmentally friendly because of the virtual elimination of VOCs (volatile organic chemicals). In addition, the high transfer rate of powder-coat paint promotes environmental stewardship, as nearly all usable unapplied powder is collected, recycled and reused in painting processes.

Glass As an industry leader in the manufacture of quality windows and doors, Pella has no shortage of salvageable glass. Surplus scrap glass and broken glass are returned to a recycling vendor and used for different applications, such as reflective coatings for highways, bottles and, of course, glass for our Pella windows and doors. About 20% of the glass that is returned to our recycler is reused in glass products. This represents the approximate maximum amount of glass that can be reused in products while still maintaining optimum clarity in the finished glass product.

Vinyl Unneeded vinyl extrusions and scraps are returned to a vendor for regrinding for use in vinyl materials. Oil Pella captures and recycles the varied oils, filters, and oil lubricants used in tractors, forklifts, trucks, plant equipment, and machinery. Used oil and oil lubricants are sent to a vendor to be recaptured as an energy source. Screen Cloth Pella recycles scrap screen cloth used in Pella windows and doors at the Pella, Iowa, facility to help reduce landfill waste. Baled-scrap screen cloth is sold to our recycling partner for use in items like archery targets. Aerosol Cans Pella collects aerosol cans used at company-owned facilities. Cans are punctured so that the chemicals in the various types of aerosol cans can be recycled. Materials inside aerosol cans are sent to cement kilns for energy use, and cans are recycled.

Metal Pella recycles all types of steel such as sheet metal, prepared steel and metal banding. All are considered scrap metal and are highly recyclable. Aluminum Aluminum can be recycled almost indefinitely. It takes 95% less energy to produce aluminum from recycled aluminum. To provide a durable, low-maintenance exterior surface, many of Pellas wood products feature exterior EnduraClad aluminum cladding, protecting the exterior of many Pella wood products. About 95% of EnduraClad comes from recycled aluminum.

Resource Recycling Program (continued) Electronics Pellas philosophy for disposal of electronic assets is to exceed the standards set forth in federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines governing the disposal of solid waste most notable guidelines contained in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 (RCRA). Pella recycles many electronic components, ranging from telephones, laptop computers, monitors, keyboards, printers, faxes and much more. Pella has been leading the way to reuse and recycle electronic components, especially those that contain materials like lead or mercury that can be harmful to the environment. Pella has established an electronic recycling program to divert these types of wastes from community landfills. Pella initiated a communitywide electronics recycling (ecycling) event in Pella, Iowa, in 2005 honoring Earth Day. Pella encourages its team members as well as area residents to safely recycle obsolete electronics like cellular phones, video cassette recorders, keyboards, monitors and computers. In just two years, more than 400 households have responsibly recycled more than 1,200 electronic items through the event. Pella partners with a computer disposal company to process electronic equipment by removing all information from computers before they are recycled or resold.

Pella products conserve energy.

Thanks to superior design, construction and glazing options, windows and doors manufactured by Pella Corporation are energy-efficient. Many have earned the ENERGY STAR in recognition of their superior energy performance. Examples of energy efficiency innovations in Pella products include:

Argon-filled insulating glass that helps prevent the transfer of heat Glass with low-emissivity (Low-E) coating that reflects most of the suns heating rays to keep homes and businesses warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer Exclusive blinds and shades protected between glass in the Pella Designer Series collection that enhance energy efficiency

Pella products are recognized for energy efficiency by third parties such as the GreenSpec Directory from BuildingGreen, Inc.

Many factors affect how long a window or door will last. But properly installed and maintained, Pella products will serve customers for many years.

Pellas environmental stewardship is nationally recognized. As a volunteer partner in the Department of Energys ENERGY STAR program, Pella Corporation promotes the use of high-efficiency products. Many Pella products meet or exceed ENERGY STAR requirements. Pellas environmental initiatives have been nationally recognized with the prestigious Promise to the Earth award sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation and the Hammer Award from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in recognition of hazardous chemical release reductions.

Pella wood products, including Architect Series , Designer Series and ProLine brands, as well as Pella Impervia fiberglass composite products typically include as much as 21% recycled content in glass and aluminum cladding as part of the companys commitment to reusing resources responsibly in quality design and manufacturing practices.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also honored Pella Corporation for its environmental stewardship efforts. The EPA recognized Pella with its Pollution Prevention for Environmental Excellence Program honorable mention award for the companys efforts in supporting the environment through responsible manufacturing processes. Green movement is growing. Pella is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The USGBC is the owner of the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System. According to the USGBC, the LEED rating system was developed to:

Pellas local environmental stewardship supports community initiatives. Pella assists the ongoing activities of the Good Neighbors Iowa Arboretums A Library of Living Plants, a 378-acre facility featuring numerous plant collections and gardens, guided woodland trails, and educational outreach and meeting facilities. Pella also seeds and maintains native plant and prairie grass collections in the landscapes surrounding its facilities. Many people visit the preserves throughout the year. Pella supports the efforts of the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation to educate Iowas citizens about a variety of environmental stewardship issues. The organization facilitates the establishment and protection of nature trails, wetlands and other similar habitats. Pella Corporation assists Trees Forever and actively supports its mission of facilitating the planting and care of trees, woodlands and forests through programs that build community and environmental awareness. The Pella Rolscreen Foundation funds environmental and recreational projects in the local communities where Pella operations are located and in nearby areas. Among these environmental initiatives are:

In addition, the Foundation offers a Matching Gift Program that provides a one-to-one matching gift up to $5,000 annually per employee for approved organizations, including the American Farmland Trust, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, The Nature Conservancy, numerous county conservation board projects, Friends of the Prairie, and the National Parks and Conservation Association. The Pella Rolscreen Foundation also awards $100 to the charity of choice of Pella Corporation team members who contribute at least 50 hours of volunteer service to qualifying nonprofit organizations. The financial support helps further the volunteer service of Pella Corporation members donating their time to groups and organizations promoting environmental stewardship like the Carroll County (Iowa) Conservation Board, the Isaac Walton League of Mahaska County (Iowa), Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, and various Boy Scout troops, Girl Scout troops, 4-H Clubs and FFA chapters.
