Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith

November 6, 2013 Statement of Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon, Bishop of the Diocese of Joliet in Illinois, Regarding the Redefinition of Civil Marriage in Illinois JOLIET, ILToday, I stand in unison with my fellow Catholic Bishops and other clergy expressing my disappointment in the redefinition of civil marriage signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn. The Catholic Church deeply values and cherishes marriage, as a union between a man and a woman. When Pope Francis addressed a similar situation as Archbishop of Buenos Aires in June, 2010, he wrote The Argentine people must face, in the next few weeks, a situation whose result may gravely harm the family. It is the bill on matrimony of persons of the same sex. The identity of the family, and its survival, are in jeopardy here: father, mother, and children. The life of so many children who will be discriminated beforehand due to the lack of human maturity that God willed them to have a father and a mother is in jeopardy. A clear rejection of the law of God, engraved in our hearts, is in jeopardyLet us not be nave: it is not a simple political struggle; it is an intention [which is] destructive of the plan of God. It is not a mere legislative project (this is a mere instrument), but rather a move of the father of lies who wishes to confuse and deceive the children of God. (Father of lies refers to the devil, as mentioned by Jesus in the Gospel of John.) While this new law redefines marriage for the state, it does nothing to change what is revealed to us by God for the good of human society.

community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

As you have heard from Finance council members this past weekend at Masses, they have invited me to speak at the following masses. Pat, Brian and Lori did a wonderful job this past week in their reflection at Masses. What a witness! Thank you to Rick, our finance council chair who spoke at all masses the following weekend. A lot of work to prepare, prayer to inspire and witness to motivate! Please bring their reflections to prayer as you discern your weekly/monthly giving, ways that you will participate in the life of the parish and extra efforts in prayer to make this coming year 2014 a blest one for the parish! It seems as though the idea behind Thanksgiving Day is to see how much turkey we can eat in one day. Every magazine and newspaper food section features the Thanksgiving Day menu star - the turkey. Charities are asking for donations to help provide items required for the proper TD celebration. A frozen turkey heads the list. Statistics on the number of turkeys eaten every year at Thanksgiving Day in our country are amazing. But, something is missing in all of the promotions-.giving thanks. Perhaps It is time to start a Put Thanks back into Thanksgiving movement? What do you think? Grace is a participation in the life of God. It introduces us into the intimacy of Trinitarian life: by Baptism the Christian participates in the grace of Christ, the Head of his Body. As an adopted son he can henceforth call God Father, in union with the only Son. He receives the life of the Spirit who breathes charity into him and who forms the Church. (CCC, n. 1997)

More News About Pastoral Plan And Your Input

The Diocesan Pastoral Council, comprised of parishioners from across the Diocese of Joliet, has been developing a comprehensive pastoral plan that will offer a roadmap for every parish to build community and to strengthen faith. Through numerous workshops, surveys, and group discussion sessions, a planning group within the Diocesan Pastoral Council is focusing on some key pastoral topics that need more input from all parishioners in the Diocese. Listed below are a few more of the topics being explored:

Increase understanding of the Sacraments and emphasize their importance. Be more welcoming. Increase the frequency of the community's engagement with teens and young adults. Evangelize and defend the Faith. Demonstrate how all the aspects of Catholic social teaching are put into action. Advocate for those in need.
In order to reach these goals, the pastoral planning committee continues to ask for your ideas. An online survey has been set up at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ActionsIdeas to gather your suggestions. In addition, 90-minute group "forums" are being organized in churches around the Diocese to gather ideas in face-to-face settings. Please visit the Diocesan Pastoral Council web site for more information on upcoming forum locations at http:// www.dioceseofjoliet.org/pastoralcouncil/. Please participate in this endeavor to carry out the work that Christ has given to us as Catholic faithful. Let us "go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation." Year of Faith 2012-2013 Deacon Waynes History before serving at Christ the King

Page 7

We will be celebrating the 35 year anniversary of Deacon Wayne Storrs with a reception in the PLC after Noon Mass, December 1st. We all know and love Deacon Wayne as he serves here at Christ the King. But few of us know what Wayne was involved in before God gave him to us. Wayne was born in 1939 in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago. Wayne earned a full scholarship to IIT in architecture for both his undergraduate and masters degrees. He taught as an Assistant Professor. Wayne showed his love for the church and for architecture when he designed a single church for cold and warm climates as his masters thesis. The famous architect, Mies van der Rohe, was so impressed with the innovative design in Waynes thesis that he hand-picked Wayne to join his firm. Wayne later worked as the head designer for CE Murphy on McCormick Place and Water Tower Place. Waynes architectural designs are extensive, as he worked on many parts of U of I, Circle Campus, Cook County Hospitals Computer Center, Loyola Hospitals operating floor and technology wing, and the Nuclear Resonator in Oak Ridge Tennessee. When Wayne opened his own firm, he designed many private homes for ambassadors, bank officials, and Chicago Bears players. His buildings were not only in Chicago, but also in Washington DC, Indianapolis, Boston, Arizona and Florida. In 1967, Wayne married his love, Mary Ellen, who was a Speech and Language Pathologist. They adopted two boys, Bruce, who passed away in 2002 and Jim who currently works in Singapore for Universal Studios. Deacon Wayne was ordained by his Eminence Cardinal Cody in 1978, as a member of the third class of deacons at Holy Name Cathedral. Deacon Wayne served at St. Josephs Parish in Homewood as his first assignment. He founded their Marriage Preparation Program, a Compassionate Ministry, a 24 prayer line and many other ministries. He served as head of the Deacon Deanery under Bishop Gregory. In addition to Deacon Waynes normal activities as a deacon which included baptizing babies, performing marriages, consoling and counseling families and preaching homilies at Masses, he also served in the neonatal units at three hospitals, worked with PADS, and on Marriage Encounter and Cursillo weekends. Deacon Wayne also used his architectural experience on the Homewood Village Planning Commission and as an officer in the local Jaycees. He coordinated the renewal of St. Josephs church and the remodeling and repurposing of two other buildings on the site. The parish family at St. Josephs provided love, care and assistance in 1982 when Mary Ellen became seriously ill. The parish and the village helped care for their young family, bought in meals and did everything needed to run their household, in addition to praying with and for the family for the years that it took for Mary Ellen to become self-sufficient again. Deacon Wayne and Mary Ellen continued to serve in a different, compassionate ministry that took into consideration Mary Ellens new limitations. When Deacon Waynes job brought him to Lombard, they first joined The Ascension of Our Lord Parish in Oakbrook Terrace. Deacon Wayne served on the Pastoral Council and developed a parish Renewal project. Mary Ellen was active in CCW, St. Vincent De Paul and Couples Rosary groups. In 1998 Father Jim asked Deacon Wayne to join Christ the King. With Bishop Imesch blessing, Deacon Wayne joined the staff at Christ the King. Sunday December 1st Noon Mass In Thanksgiving for Thirty Five Years of Faithful Service to the Church Deacon Wayne Storrs + Deacon Frank and Deacon Peter, along with Deacon Wayne Will celebrate a Re- Commitment of Service following the homily Following the Noon Mass there will be a reception in the Parish Life Center Celebrating the 35 th Anniversary of Deacon Wayne. + There will be a presentation by Fr. A STEWARDSHIP OF TIME & TALENT A REFLECTION OF WHO I AM

My name is Lori Bhardwaj. I serve as the Administrative Assistant to the Principal at the Christ the King Early Learning Academy. I am a member of the Christ the King Finance Council and served as the Financial Assistant to the Business Manager. I have been a member of Christ the King Parish for 18 years and a staff member for 6 years. I was civilly married, now divorced and have two grown children. My education background is in accounting and I worked as a Controller for a major corporation for 12 years. I wanted to regain my Catholic identity and values so when Father Peter asked me to be a member on the Christ the Finance Council and become the secretary at the school I jumped at the opportunity. I am very grateful for this opportunity as I believe I regained what once thought lost. The blessing has come back to me two fold. Overall I strive giving back to the church in numerous ways. Time, Talent and Treasure. I volunteer extra hours for fundraisers for school and church and make donations to the same. Through the sharing of my expertise in accounting experience and give what I can, in my weekly offering. I know what I am doing is the right thing, in responding to God by serving our parish. I invite you to think about what you can do to give back to the church. Lori Bhardwaj

The Supreme Example of Stewardship

In thanksgiving we reflect on all the times in the past year that our parishioners have stepped forward to give of their time, their talent and their treasure. We are aware that sometimes good people feel that they are asked, and asked and asked again all without the efforts they contribute being recognized. Some wonder, How much more do they expect from me? We are very grateful for everything that our parishioners do to build our faith community. The true message of stewardship, however, is not about counting volunteer hours, documenting service or establishing giving requirements. Its not about how much any church expects of its members. It is about the expectations of our God, and our answer to his final question, What have you done with all that I have given to you? return to the Lord in proportion to the gifts we have received. Stewardship is demanding often contradicting the powerful influences of our culture. Stewardship is personal stemming from our individual relationship with God. Most of all Stewardship is rewarding in this world and the next. This week: As a personal reflection, consider the greatest example of true stewardship: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16).
Stewardship is challenging - challenging each of us to
