Taper-Lok Connectors recently set a
new precedent in the procedures for
offshore hook-up of risers, saving the
ETAP Alliance over 13,500 offshore
man hours and approximately 5.0
million.

Taper-Lok Connectors were used to connect the
risers pre-installed into the jacket to the cellar
deck areas of the production platform. The use of
Taper-Lok eliminated the need for offshore
welding creating these tremendous savings.

During the early stages of the ETAP platform
design, a potential cost saving was identified by
flanging the riser connections. Until now BP
projects had always used offshore welding to
connect the risers, a process that would be made
simpler and cheaper by flanging.

ETAPs use of Taper-Lok was given approval by
the Health and Safety Executive after proving
350,000,000 hours of leak free service and on the
condition that the connector was proven by a fire
test. Taper-Lok was the only mechanical
connector found to be acceptable by the HSE.

No less than 19 different riser sizes were installed.
The largest diameters were 24 1500 and the
highest pressure 14 10,000. Materials of
construction included A694 F65, Duplex, Super
Duplex and F65 clad.

Each riser had to be analysed for static external
load capabilities and also for dynamic fatigue
loads over a 60-year design life. The Taper-Lok
connection was extremely well suited to
accommodating these conditions.

Taper-Lok has been
extensively tested by the
Kennedy Space Centre for
use on the X-33 Evolved
Expendable Launch Vehicle
and the Space Shuttle. The
system will be used in new
rise off umbilicals. Testing
was performed using both
liquid nitrogen and liquid
hydrogen.

Reasons for using Taper-Lok:

100% leak free sealing, backed up by over 350

on hydrogen, chemical and other super-critical
lines.
High resistance to cyclic, fatigue and vibration
loads. Used by Rolls Royce for extended testing of
jet engines.
The flanges and seal rings are made from the
same materials giving the same rate of thermal
expansion. This makes the connection particularly
suitable for high temperature service.
Compact design reduced space and saves weight
on large installations such as process skids and
heat exchangers also reduces cost.
2 axial misalignment makes assembly of heavy
wall and return bend systems less onerous.
Small diameter bolts with low torque requirements
makes assembly and installation far simpler.
DNV Type Approved and fully fire tested to the
requirements of API 6FB Part II.

Welding Units as the European licensee for
Taper-Lok Connectors have been working with
Statoil to produce connectors optimised for
remote tie-in. It is possible to use machines such
as the Stolt Comex Seaway MATIS and the
Sonsub BRUTUS to make up bolted flange
connections sub-sea without divers.

Taper-Lok already has features that promote it
especially well to remote tie-in:

Capable of accepting 1 to 2 axial
misalignment and retaining full integrity. (The
flange remains misaligned there is no need
to pull the connector straight). 10
misalignment connectors also available.
Low residual bolt stresses typically half that
of ANSI & API flanges.
Area contact seal can be damaged and still
seal
The most proven track record of any compact
connector sub-sea.
Swivel flange uses ball bearing race making
remote rotation of the swivel outer particularly
easy.
Flanges lighter and smaller than equivalent
ANSI or API flanges
Designed to use standard Sea Serpent bolt
tensioners

We have also developed other features
specifically for remote tie-in:

Flanges can be designed to use a fewer
number of bolts reducing the cost and
complexity of the remote tooling. Bolt can be
spaced out to give a larger clearance for
tensioning tools.
Seal ring can be positively installed onto either
the male flange or female flange prior to
deployment. Seal ring is also re-usable.
Flanges can be designed to suit existing
tooling patterns.
Bolting patterns are interchangeable with a
range of nominal sizes.
