DRAWING AND DATA

Fig. 1 Circuit to measure current and voltage

Remember that you will work with live voltages and currents. Great care must be taken
that you do not become part of the circuit. Check that all test instruments are correctly
connected. Be careful. At all times THINK SAFETY.
INSTRUCTION
Voltage, current and resistance measurement are commonly required in
electronics work. The instrument used to measure voltage is a voltmeter, the
instrument used to measure current is an ammeter, and the instrument used to
measure resistance is an ohmmeter. Commonly, all three instruments are
combined into a single instrument called multimeter, in which you can choose
what specific quantity to measure by selecting the appropriate function with a
switch. The work sheet describes the technique used to measure voltage,
current and resistance by using a multimeter.

3.

KEY POINT

To
measure
voltage and
current in a
circuit

Caution:
1. Select a range with a maximum greater than you expect the reading to be.
2. Connect the meter, making sure the leads is the correct way round.
Digital meters can be safely connected in reverse, but an analogue meter may
be damaged.
3. If the reading goes off the scale: immediately disconnect and select a
higher range.

1. Measure open-circuit condition

2.

a)
b)

a) Connect the circuit of figure 1.

b) Turn ON the power supply. Measure the voltage across R1, R2, R3, R4 and
R5. Record the value in the volts column in Table 1.

d)
e)

c) Measure the current through each resistor and record all the measured
value in Table 1.
d) Turn OFF power. Calculate the voltage and current using Ohms law
(Record in Table 2) and compare with the measured value.

2. The multimeter is set on the 10V range to measure dc voltage. The pointer is at 150 on
the upper ac-dc scale. What voltage is being measured?

3. How do you set up the meter to measure 275 V dc, and on what scale do you read the
voltage?.

4. If you expect to measure a resistance in excess of 20 k, where do you set the switch?

CONCLUSION : Calculate the value of current and voltage in STEP 3 and compare with measured
value
