THE ALBUM TITLE

I asked my talented group of writers to come up with a name for the compilation and a bunch of different titles were thrown around but one truly encapsulated what Heavy Planet is about. Misha suggested..."Bong Hits From the Astral Basement", we all agreed and here it is, sixty-one of the finest bands from all around the world. Following are the biographies of each band and the artist that contributed the killer artwork.

THE BANDS
1000MODS

1000mods is a psychedelic/stoner rock band from Chiliomodi, Greece. They were formed in the summer of 2006 and since then, they have played over 100 live shows, including openings for Brant Bjork, Colour Haze, Karma to Burn, My Sleeping Karma, Radio Moscow and many others. Their commitment to vintage equipment, thick and heavy analog sound and their remarkably passionate on stage performance is what sets them apart. In the beginning of 2007 they released their first (self-financed) EP Blank Reality on CD, and in December 2009 they stroke back with a brand new 7 EP titled Liquid Sleep, available on coloured (light green) Vinyl by SuiSound(CTS prods). They also released a limited edition split tape with the German psy-doomsters Wight. In October 2010, the almighty Billy Anderson, the man behind legendary albums (Sleep, Melvins, Neurosis, Om, Los Natas, Orange Goblin etc), visited Greece in order to produce the bands debut album Super Van Vacation. Malleus Art Rock Lab took care of the artwork. In September 2011, the German label Kozmik Artifactz

released the album on Double Vinyl and the Greek label CTS prods on Digipack CD. 1000mods toured Europe during October 2011, in order to promote their new album. They played 25 gigs in 12 countries. Some of the tour's highlights were appearing as special guests in Up In Smoke 3 and supporting White Hills. Lineup: Dani / Bass & Vox, Giannis / Guitars, George / Guitars, Labros / Drums ((facebook|bandcamp)) ______________________________________________________________________ ASHES OF IRON

A cold February in Sunderland 2011 saw Ashes of Iron hit the studio to record their debut album with Neil (The Beast) Bassett. With desire and dedication, the eleven tracks were done, fine tuned and polished ready to be sent to the states to be mixed and mastered. Jason Groves (Asylum on the hill/Supafuzz) at Sneak Attack studios in Lexington Kentucky used his expertise along with David Angstrom (Hermano/Asylum on the hill) to add depth to the mix and master the huge sound they were looking for while adding the polish to a debut to be proud of, and proud they are. Ashes of Iron are five strong and a passionate song writing force. Playing melody driven heavy blues rock with wattage and vigour. Their aggressive yet refined sound is organic, expressive and expansive (with a hint of blueberries). Ashes Of Iron live shows are all about the groove, the energy and the intensity, the duelling guitars tuned down to a thunderous growl, the pumping bass, the addictive choruses and melodies that can be so subtle and subdued, then in an instant smash you in the face. The direction Ashes Of Iron take to manipulate these grooves and song structures is what makes them unique to the bands of the same calibre.
3DPageFlip eBook Maker Page 5 of 129

With some great support slots under their belt (Therapy?, Viking Skull, Brant Bjork, Desert Fest) the London debut for Ashes of Iron could not have been written any better, opening up for John Garcia plays Kyuss at a sold out Electric ballroom. Now the album is complete, 2012 is set for promoting the album and working with creative visual minds. Videos for Pharmacopoeia and Sanefull pushed Ashes Of Irons reputation further, spreading the word, showcasing what they are about. Astralnaut formed in the later half of 2011, the day after Halloween. Connections were made instantly with the members and to date they have been gigging ferociously up and down the country promoting their first release Back To The Bog. With the imminent unearthing of their first single and second E.P and many plans for the future, have no time to slack and dont plan on it. Its exciting times musically in Ireland and we are honored to be a part of it ((facebook|bandcamp)) ______________________________________________________________________

BARON GREENBACK

Baron Greenback was formed at the start of 2009 and is based in the Midlands and South West England, U.K. Although the ethos of the band is inextricably rooted in respect for the pioneers of heavy music of the 1970s, Baron Greenback plays music which incorporates a variety of styles, influences and dynamics. Baron Greenback successfully completed its debut EP in 2011, which was mastered by producer Joe Gibb of Mighty Atom Studios (Jane's Addiction, Million Dead, Taint). The EP, which receives regular airplay on online radio shows, is available in full for listening at the band's Reverbnation site. Shows :The band has spent 2012 gigging intensively around the Midlands and South West England with various touring bands which are well-known to the scene, such as Serpent Venom, Karma to Burn, Gouranga, Desert Storm and Alunah, as well as with local favourites Welcome Back Delta, Slab, Kateleptic and a host of others. In the summer of 2012 Baron Greenback competed solidly in the Metal 2 The Masses, West Midlands competition for a chance to appear at the Bloodstock festival, progressing to the final. The band intends to enter the competition again in 2013. The feedback from all shows has been overwhelmingly positive with audiences struck by the band's powerful, well-honed performances. The Future: Baron Greenback will support Swedish classic rock superstars Graveyard

at The Fleece in Bristol on 2 December 2012. In between its busy gigging schedule, the band has written some epic music for a fulllength release. Baron Greenback intends to return to the studio in 2013 to record its first album, which the band intends to promote at shows and via an online campaign. Members: Andy - Drums, Max - Vocals, Mike - Guitars, Chris Rooster - Bass ((facebook|reverbnation)) ______________________________________________________________________ BONEWORM

"The themes on Boneworm's self-titled debut are brutish and desolate. Songs of love have their place in timid ballads and frivolous pop ephemera. But concepts like failure and crushing doubt are burdensome beasts that are best caged and conveyed in music that is unafraid to handle them. This has always been the dire necessity of metal music. Boneworm tells these tales by calling upon rasped howls, punishing bass, and the occasional guitar solo that delicately pulls us aside and promises that nothing will ever be ok again. For a genre that is frequently looking outward into the psychedelic aether, Boneworm offers their doom with a sense of crushing immediacy. Which is the more terrifying, the intricate words of a sinister hex being cast, or plaintively being told that nothing matters because time is already
3DPageFlip eBook Maker Page 8 of 129

against you? To be fair, imagery of bubbling cauldrons and mystic dimensions is overkill when you're already writing your music against the backdrop of Portland, Orygun. A discerning ear will detect the homages and influences, but Boneworm's sound is brewed and bottled in a northwest style. This is the soundtrack to rain-slick blacktop glowing under sodium lamps. This is the thump and rattle of freight trains and rattling windows in the industrial district. This is the distinct sound of Cascadian doom. Boneworm is Tim Burke. Tim plays guitar and shoulders the burden of knowing exactly how you are going to die. Boneworm is Dave Becker. Dave plays bass and, like a lich or a Roman emperor, only seems to be growing more powerful with age. Boneworm is Chaz Rocker. Chaz plays drums and hangs out with your Camaro-driving uncle. Ask about the weekend they drove to Reno." ((facebook|bandcamp)) ______________________________________________________________________ BOSS 302

BOSS 302 is a 3 piece hard rock band from S.Jersey signed to Toil Records out of Philadelphia who released their debut CD in September 2010. The band describes its sound as straight forward with influences ranging from the slow & heavy riffs of Black Sabbath & Kyuss, the intensity of Motorhead, to the stoner rock grooves of Queens of the Stone Age & Fu Manchu. With brothers Larry Lerro as the bassist & lead singer and Mike as the drummer it makes up a machine tight rhythm section. John Modugno is the lead guitarist and also singer which really completes the solid foundation of the band. Their no compromise approach from the beginning has lead them to be a true, authentic hard rock band. One of the band's real strengths has always been its live shows. Be sure to look out for upcoming dates. ((website|reverbnation)) ______________________________________________________________________ BUZZER/THE GREAT KHAN

Buzzer is a southern rock - stoner trio from Tel Aviv, Israel, formed in 2004 by Greg Buzzer (guitars, vocals) Roy Khen (drums) and Gil' Ben Yaakov (bass). In 2005 the band self-released their debut album "Got Me Wasted", which gained them recognition in the local scene. Buzzer also became known for their energetic live performances. The next album "Buzzraiser", also self-released and self-produced, followed in 2007 and

was well received by the stoner crowd. The year 2009 saw Buzzer releasing two EP's; "Alive" and "Rolling". 2012- Greg Buzzer releases a-self titled 7-track solo project, under the name of "The Great Khan"- a warm, fuzz driven, southern and classic rock influenced studio project. After a few line up changes occurred, the current members - Greg Buzzer, Roy Chen, Eran Gier and second drummer Rom Gov are looking forward to continue generating Buzz throughout the near and distant feature. Three friends from Regensburg/Germany had the idea to this project. One year later, in october 2011 the idea came into reality and the band CARRION MOTHER was complete. The next year was spent building and distilling our three very long songs "Earth", "Giver of Warmth" and "Venus, Goddess". The album with its three tracks on it was recorded in our rehearsal room in august 2012 and published on 17th of september. The CDs will be produced by our own hands, and the artwork was done by the band as well. Now, everything the band thinks about is, playing live, playing live and playing live again! The members are Aris Stefanov (v), Raffael Diestelmann (g), Julius Kreupl (g), Fabian Bleil (b), Joachim Wolf (d). C.F.A

C.F.A reminds us that rock-n-roll is carefree, tumultuous, and above all . . . fun! In 2008, the Tacoma, Washington trio of Cody Foster, Dave "Reno" Maerseillan, and David Takata took a lifetime of musical influences and put their talents together to create C.F.A, a stoner-fied take on unabashed rock n' roll and punk. Being influenced by the last three decades of music, C.F.A. is the missing link connecting those eras of music. After honing their collective chops through unrelenting and incendiary live performances, the band decided it was time to hole up in the studio. In 2009, C.F.A. called upon the acclaimed engineer/producer Tony Reed (Stone Axe/Mos Generator) to best capture the aforementioned live energy in a studio setting. Reed recorded most of the album at Temple Sound with completion of the project taking place at his personal studio, HeavyHead Recording Co. The decision was finally made to release C.F.A's full length album on Ripple Music, titled Managed by the Devil, Brought to You by the Grace of God, which was released to a world-wide audience on October 23rd, 2012. CONCRETE SUN

Concrete Sun is a five-piece band from Novi Sad, Serbia. 'Southern stoner grunge' is probably the closest you can get in an attempt to put us into a genre, but there's a lot more to the story than just that. Our music is a blend of southern rock, blues, stoner, groove, sludge and grunge, characterized by bluesy melodies, sharp vocals and heavy riffage. Formed in September 2007, the band went through a few lineup changes which halted its initial progress, including a year-long hiatus in 2009. The present lineup is active since October 2010 and consists of: Strahinja Cerovina (vocals), Bojan Mijatovic (lead guitar), Budimir Zivkovic (guitar), Stevan Fujto (bass), Milos Topic (drums). Our debut album Sky Is High, self-released in August 2011, received a positive response from both the fans and the media, scoring good reviews on stoner rock outposts like Heavyplanet, Doommantia and The Ripple Effect. The album is available via Bandcamp for a 'name your price' digital purchase, and as of November 2012, the album will be officially released through Miner Recordings, a label based in Switzerland. A few highlights worth mentioning: in late 2011, Gruvanje, the only rock music show which airs on a national TV frequency in Serbia, awarded us with a 'biggest hope for 2012' title, and as part of the award, we've been granted a 5-song recording in RTV's 'Studio M'. Our newest single 'Silver Tear', has been included in The Ripple Effect's recent compilation 'Head Music'. Highlight of our 'live' career up to now is the appearance on Budapest's Sziget Festival this year (voted best major festival in 2012), Exit Festival 2010/2012, and Koncert

Godine Festival, a legendary rock and roll festival in Serbia. We have gigged throughout Serbia and the neighboring countries (Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary) and we're planning a first major Euro tour for the spring of 2013. At the moment we are working on new material and playing live as often as possible. ((facebook|bandcamp)) ______________________________________________________________________ DAWN STORM WATCHERS

DSW is a stoner band born in the desert of Lecce (Italy) in April 2010. After various vicissitudes, including the exhausting search for a drummer, the band reaches a first initial nucleus and records the EP Dawn Storm Watchers. Released in March 2011, the EP meets good feedbacks (including an unexpected but pleasant "Good vibes lads!" by Sigiriya- former Acrimony). Immediately after the EP, the line-up changes: the singer Mattia Marchello is replaced by Stefano "Wolf" Lombardi. Wasting no time, in September 2011 the four began recording for their first studio album, Dust Storm Warning, which, after a long gestation, was released in May 2012 for Acid Cosmonaut Records. In constant struggle with those who do not understand that DSW is a meaningless acronym (or at most is whatever you prefer), DSW at the moment are: Wolf Lombardi-vocals, Marco Papadia-guitar, Stephen Butelli-bass guitar, Fabio Zullino-drums. DEAD EMPIRES

Dead Empires is a four-piece heavy instrumental progressive metal band from the Hudson Valley, NY. While the band is instrumental, they choose not to label themselves as such- the sound is ever-evolving, and theyd prefer to put out music that is organic, natural, passionaterather than stick to a particular genre. The band likes to combine a wide range of influences to produce a sound that sways from epic, ethereal soundscapes to heavy postrock riffs, rounded out with good old fashioned sludgy heaviness. Their new recently-completed new album "Waiting In Waves" is slated for an October 2012 release, and comes hot off the heels of their critically acclaimed MONUMENTS EP. The album was produced, recorded, and mastered by D. James Goodwin (Devo, Murder by Death, Thursday, Kaki King, Norah Jones) at The IkOsOn Studios in Woodstock, NY and features art by Revolution Dream Design (revolutiondream.com). The album will be available on 12" colored vinyl or digital download. PRE-ORDER WAITING IN WAVES NOW at deadempires.com. The album was funded in part thanks to a successful kickstarter campaign, allowing for the vinyl deluxe edition to be produced. Your help was kindly appreciated! DEADWEIGHT

Deadweight was born out of a high school friendship, like so many other bands. In the years since those days of a guitar and a set of drums the band has undergone numerous changes, and mostly been only an idea. Some time in 2011, however, the stars aligned and a group of talented musicians first got together and became the current incarnation of Deadweight. The band started to cut a sound out for themselves. It began with a ritual to channel the spirit of John Bonham. Despite the fact that a HAZMAT team had to be called and power to a section of the the city was lost for a few days, the drums were in place. Then the keyboard was plugged in, followed by the bass. A deep rumbling awoke in the earth. The guitar players, in true fashion, had log cutting contests to see who would play lead. The tree, however, split straight down the middle and it was decided that this was a sign. Both would play lead. The room filled with smoke and the vague smell of comingled B.O. with Pabst Blue Ribbon, and so it was. The songs began to flow like so many open cans. Songs reminiscent of classic jams and ballads yet with something new, and thick. Deadweight mixes Rock, Hard Rock, sometimes a little Metal, sometimes a little Funk, maybe even a touch of Motown to get their sound. The ingredients are pretty basic, but the result is something not to be trifled with. ((facebook|bandcamp))

ELECTRIC TAURUS

Electric Taurus formed in 2010 as a recording project by Matt and Rob before evolving into a full gigging band. After various member changes throughout 2010/2011, the line up settled down with Mauro Frison (Alternative 4) on the drum stool. In April 2011, Rob left the band to move to England. Over the next 4 months, Matt and Mauro kept on writing songs as a duo and came up with a totally new set of gloomier and doomier songs. September 2011 saw James Lynch joining the band as bass player. Matt then took up vocal duties and this formation started the recording of their first E.P. In May 2012, Electric Taurus was offered a record deal for their first album by Italian indie label Moonlight Records. The album Veneralia was recorded in July and will be released mid-October. The band is heavily influenced by both the giants of the 60s and 70s (Black Sabbath, Hendrix, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Deep Purple) and the underground bands of the same era (Buffalo, Leaf Hound, Iron Claw, Primevil, Hard Stuff, Captain Beyond). All this retro fuzz music is then blended with the 90s Monster Magnet, Sleep, Soundgarden, Kyuss, Electric Wizard and Orange Goblin. EMPERORS

If you're looking for drive, groove and great riffs from Nijmegen Rockcity you should definitely check out Emperors. Emperors are a stonerrock group who have been playing music on those terms since 2005. These guys , made of stone, marble and granite, started off in 2005 playing covers of bands like Kyuss, Fu Manchu and Blind Dog as "Emperors of the Black". In the year 2010 the creativity itch could no longer be ignored and Emperors started to write and play their own songs. Now they play their very own kind of Stonerrock; Hard as stone, subtle where possible yet aggressive where it should be. Heavy groovy music with a sharp edge which still reveals influences from Emperors' musical heroes . Bandmembers: Peter: drums Marcello: bass Ralluf: vocals Paulizei: lead guitar & backing vocals Nol: rhythm guitar This song is taken from our just recorded EP that will be released on vinyl February 1, 2013. FIRELORD

Firelord started up in Turin in 2007 from the ashes of a Doom Metal project named Saint Judas founded by Mario E. Bussini a few years before. In 2007 Beppe Tozza, Daniele Biffaro and Giulio Buscaglione joined the project. The band played some covers and a couple of draft tunes heavily influenced by Black Sabbath, Count Raven, Gates of Slumber, Earthride, Saint Vitus and Wino projects, Doom scene, Stoner and Metal until '80s. Many problems and changes happened to the lineup, until 2011 when we got stable with the entrance of bass player Dario Giuva, who joined the project to participate in the release of the four tracks recorded on the first Firelord EP. Actual lineup is formed by Mario E.Bussini (voice, guitars), Giulio Buscaglione (drums) and Dario Giuva (bass). FLEMMING AND THE GANG

Flemming and the Gang breathe the stormy air of the baltic sea. And this is the way they sound like. Sometimes slow, sometimes fast, but always heavy. You`ll find stoner, doom and psychedelic elements. Founded in this line-up in late 2011 by Flemming (git./voc.), Robb (bassgit./ voc.) and Tom (drums) they`re on a trip to experience their own kind of style, that`s open for nearly every type of music. Heavy guitars, groovy basses and fulminating drums crowned by two strong and clear voices full of heavy emotions. Currently working on a new record subsequently to the solowork "III" by Flemming- which was the reason for founding this band, while promoting the live-CD "25 at 36". GAGGLE OF COCKS

Gaggle of Cocks (GOC) emerged from the bowels of NYC's lower east side in 2001. They played their way to the top of an eclectic music scene that included such New York City luminaries as The Bullys, Joker Five Speed and The Toilet Boys. Within a year of forming GOC was hammering out their unique brand of stoner-infused hard rock at legendary and now-defunct clubs such as CBGBs, The Continental, Don Hills and L'Amour. In 2002 GOC independently released their self-financed debut CD, American Trash. Screaming Ferret Wreckords re-released the album in 2008. Here's what people said: "American Trash" gets by on sheer energy and determination to be as filthy and low class as humanly possible.-Metal Underground "Not since Melvins, Antiseen, Dwarves, Butthole Surfers and Agony Column has a

Guitarist/vocalist Pat Harrington and bassist Freddy Villano are back with a new line-up featuring the massive drum attack of Charles Ruggiero and special appearances by Chris Goercke on guitar. Recorded at Riverfront Studios in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and produced by Harrington & Stacy O'Dell, Low Class Trendsetter is an aggressive, sometimes funny, sometimes painful glimpse into the decline of the American Dream. Packed with manic intensity and infectious grooves, the buzz around this release is simply electric! ((facebook|cdbaby)) ______________________________________________________________________ GOAT BONG

Goat Bong comes from San Antonio, Texas and they play a mixture of instrumental occult stoner sludge and doom. Goat Bong is the work of one man, Dirty Mike Alcala. I could probably keep adding to that list but if you enjoy any of those genre tags then you will probably enjoy them. Taking a somewhat unorthodox approach to the stoner genre as a whole the guys have firstly done away with your typical vocal element, which lets face it, is the usual factor that determines your subgenre. Instead being replaced with a healthy dose of samples, which gives you a little bit more artistic licence when it comes
3DPageFlip eBook Maker Page 25 of 129

to the general acoustic dynamics of the band. Thrashing around in the pool of genres Goat Bong have managed to swing effortlessly in and out of the likes of sludge, doom, thrash, blues, southern and even desert rock, sometimes all within the same song. Which to me doe's sound great, even if it's a pain in the ass when it comes to trying to comparing them to anyone else. For others I know that it initially sounds like a somewhat reckless and haphazard state of affairs, but trust me when I say, some how these guys have got it to bloody work! Obviously, there's no pretense here. Goat Bong is all about weed; evil, riff-drowned weed. they're heavy, they're mind-numbingly fuzzy, and they go great with a lack of motivation. Strap on that jammy pack and punch yourself in the dick, you ain't goin' nowhere. But don't worry... your new friend Goat Bong is coming by. Your mom doesn't trust him, but she's just happy you've found a pal. Like that hesher down the street, Goat Bong's bringin' over his best kush. Pretty soon, though, he's movin' in. Page 26 of 129

In the early Middle Ages, many rival religions and philosophical schools (including Christianity, Gnosticism, Neoplatonism, and Manicheanism) competed for domination of the hearts and minds of the world. One such faith that has been mostly forgotten, is that of Oxism. There is evidence to suggest its origins go back as far as ancient Greece. Xenophanes of Colophon may have eluded to it when he wrote Yes, and if oxen had hands, and could paint with their hands, and produce works of art as men do, oxen would paint the forms of the gods like oxen and make their bodies in the image of their several kinds. (500 B.C.) Most sacred Oxic texts burned with the Library of Alexandria in 391 A.D. However, one piece of scripture, the Book of Abyssal Gigantism, survived, and was recently discovered by five unsuspecting rock musicians, who upon reading the text, were instantly transformed into the five original Oxchetypes: War, Frost, Axe, Myth, and Beast, who have taken the mantle of the High Priests of Oxism. These sonic conquistadors receive direct communications from their Lord God Ox, may he be exalted, and channel His word into excruciatingly sludgy riffs with blues infused space crooning and annihilative rhythmic pummeling. Inseminating the world with divine wisdom, God Ox embody the uncanny strength and nobility of oxen, who have been made in His image. Their thunderous onslaught of righteous metal will be your ecstatic rapture or agonizing torment for all eternity! ICHABOD

After 10+ years of blazing trails in the psych/sludge/doom/metal scene, Boston rockers Ichabod had finally reached a plateau. Hoping to continue their personal and musical ascents, the band began to experiment with new tunings, sounds, symbolism, and structures in their songwriting. As with most change, there came growing pains-original singer Ken MacKay and the band decided to gracefully part ways due to variance over the direction much of the new material was taking. After four acclaimed studio albums (Living Through the End, Let the Bad Times Roll, Reaching Empyrean, and 2012), it appeared as if the sojourn was over. Remaining members Greg Delaria(bass), Dave Iverson(guitar), and Phil MacKay(drums) did not want to see the fruits of their labor go to waste however. The band had recorded a 40+ minute composition that is a conceptual piece, a salutation to the prog-rock masterpieces of the seventies and more modern epics like Monster Magnet's Tab, Sleep's Jerusalem, and Iceburn's Hephaestus. The musical movements are meant to mimic the movement of a mighty river, specifically the one to which the moniker was dedicated.

Ichabod had also penned another full length's worth of original songs which were an artistic extension of all their preceding material. They did not want Merrimack and the untitled collection to go unheard, so decided to employ the talents of longtime friend John Fadden on vocals and complete the catalogue before decommissioning. Ichabod saw the time of flux as opportune for adding to their sonic assault; guitarist and friend Jay Adam was recruited as a second guitar player to ensure the wall of sound would be complete. Once Fadden and Adam came aboard, the new energy in the rehearsal room was palpable. The brilliant historical/metaphorical lyrics John scribed for Merrimack and the words and melodies he was imparting with the newest material, along with Iverson and Adams' duel guitar mugging, caused an enthusiasm in the band that altered the plan to record their swan song(s) and fade into the sunset. Ichabod is once again playing shows and actively documenting the newest music with a newfound vigor and earnestness. Both Merrimack and Dreamscapes from Dead Space (tentative working title) are being recorded/produced by Glenn Smith at Amps Vs. Ohms studios in Cambridge, MA and should be released within the year by Rootsucker Records. The glory hath definitely not yet departed from Ichabod, nay, you could say it has begun anew. "And she named the child Ichabod-Where is the glory? The glory - That is, the glorious type and assurance of God's presence, the ark, which is often called God's glory, which they could glory in above all other nations." -1 Samuel 4:21 ((facebook|bandcamp)) ______________________________________________________________________

INTERSTELAR

"Interstelar has been bashing away at the Los Angeles club scene with their tight, heavy yet brooding rock and roll onslaught since October of 2004. Singer/ Rhythm guitarist Jason Kothmann has been involved with the band since it's inception. His vocal style has been compared to Maynard James Keenan and Mark Lanegan, but his influences go much deeper: from Screamin Jay Hawkins to Jaz Coleman from Killing Joke. Earl Houston has been laying down his low, brutal bass grooves with the band since spring of 2007. Before that, he has played with a number of west coast acts, including D. H. Peligro of Dead Kennedys. His style is a unique combination of roots, punk, funk, and straight up rock and roll. Gary Gladson brought his scorching leads and riffage to interstelar in 2009. Although his roots are deeply in the blues, his style is modern, and very, very heavy. He has played in the central coast, NorCal and Oakland rock scene, most notably in Supercel Killwatt with Travis Warren (who went on to replace Shannon Hoon in Blind Melon in 2006.) Gary has been integral in shaping the tone and direction of Interstelar. The most recent addition to Interstelar is the truly bombastic P.J. McMullan on drums in early 2011. He brings a primal backbone to the band, as well as a bouncy groove. He was previously in the band 3rd Strike, which was signed to Hollywood records. Interstelar released the "React In Silence" EP in 2007 with a different drummer (Jeff Murray, now with The Shrine, currently touring with Fu Manchu) and a different guitarist Kiko Montecillo. The "On Black Waves" EP dropped in 2010 and received rave reviews from the

LARGE MARGE

While the amber sun sets down on muddy waters surrounding the city of Lake Charles, Louisiana, fisherman pull in their catch, plant workers punch in their time cards, and police officers get prepared for their next game of cowboys and indians. As the tubes fire up and feedback rings out across the city like the warning of the local refinery sirens, the sign of whats to come has been announced. A guitar riff pours out of a forgotten window and enters the dead-end city as the soundtrack to its own southern hustle. MONOBROW

These instrumental scientists have crafted a platter of heavy instrumental psych-rock. Soaring guitar solos, melodic groove, dynamic arrangements, these guys hit it all with unmatched talent and orchestral sensibility. Formed on an icy day in 2009, the band developed an instant chemistry through a common love for heaviosity. Positive reactions from local audiences encouraged the band to enter the studio with Ottawa legend, Paul Yogi Granger. The result is an 8 track self-titled vinyl and digital debut that MONOBROW independently produced and released in September 2010. Through word-of-mouth, local radio play, and various music blogs, the band has sold records all over the world and gained praise throughout the heavy music community. NARCOIRIS

What is it? A heavy rock trio inspired by the true classic rock sounds of Sabbath, Zeppelin, The Beatles and many 70s Argentinean heavy rock pioneers such as Pappo, Pescado Rabioso and Color Humano. Its a heavy rock trio but also its got a deep melodic edge. Originally playing since 2006, Narcoiris was re born in late 2008 when founding members Fernando Finger Figueiras and Mariano Bertolazzi after playing many shows in the Buenos Aires area- crossed paths with old school drummer Sebastin Romani (former Stonerwitch, Buffalo and Humo Del Cairo) And reformed the band, renewing its sound, philosophy and approach. So, in less that 6 months they come up with 10 brand new songs which 6 of them were selected to be recorded for the first Narcoiris EP entitled Cazador released freely on the internet. Cazador was well received and quickly became the first taste of the bands sound, helped pave the way into the local scene and set the path to come. After an entire year of playing shows around the city of Buenos Aires and its suburbs, Narcoiris hit the studio once again in 2011 to record its first full length album. The result is Temporal a dense and thick album which hits harder than the previous effort with booming, dense drums, a powerful and dirty bass, down-tuned, roaring guitars and mellow vocals, which take you back directly to the early bands of the Argentinean classic rock of yesteryear. Recorded entirely on 2 analog tape and mastered in the USA at Justin Weis Trakworx

OLD AND ILL

After emerging after a trek between the high desert and bat city via cenopian passageway, OLD and ILL arrived to the surface gritty and altered from having inhaled tainted ammonia soaked subterranean air only to quickly retreat to danky hideaways to further craft their menacing, paranoid music. The result is a belligerent yet deliberate rawness that is equally at home in guano drenched limestone or remote desert. Awash with reverb, the three piece powers forth riff after riff that is both crusty and cosmic channeling their own version of doom. OUTLAWS OF ZEN

It's the combination of high intensity rock n roll and working class frustration, that inspire and shape the sounds of "The Outlaws of Zen" a heavy riff based rock band from corn fields of Auburn Mi; heart of the Tri-Cities. Saginaw with the nation leading murder per capita rate, Bay City's old boy's network, heavy drinking, and fear of the future, and Mayberry er' Midland the land of unicorns, rainbow Kool Aid, and nothing bad can happen here. Formed in mid 2011 TOOZ fuse high intensity rock n roll and working class frustration. The riff is king, but the song is the kingdom. Brutal yet jazzy drumming (Travis Evans), clever satirical lyrics (Joe Gibson), thundering and meandering bass (Tommy Koppman, and tasteful guitar fills (Korey Gillespie) all attribute to our heaviness through intensity approach. Largely influenced by the 70's obscure rock underground but tempered through the band members' time in metal, retro, hard rock, blues, jazz, and acoustic bands. The result is the EP "Don't Bothering Getting Up, We'll Let Ourselves In". ((facebook|bandcamp)) ______________________________________________________________________

POWERED WIG MACHINE

Southern Arizonas Powered Wig Machine, (a.k.a) PWM, began crafting Stonerflavored desert rock in 2007. PWMs rock sound - described as heavy western rock n roll contains elements of desert/stoner rock, classic rock, blues, and lets not forget fuzzzzz combined with lyrics that dabble in sci-fi and comic book lore. Their oddball name spawns from track seven on Josh Hommes (Queens of the Stoneage) The Desert Sessions Volumes 9-10 album. PWMs lineup includes lead singer/guitarist Wayne Rudell, guitarist Brian Gold, bassist Joey Rudell, and drummer Daniel 'the ranchero' Graves. These rockers are all Arizona natives and have been playing together as a group since 2001. Musically, PWMs style and niche come strongly from where the band lives geographically. The band lives 15 minutes from Tombstone, the town to tough to die. The self-branded Heavy Western Rock n Roll captures the modern spirit of the west. The fuzzed out blues riffs and hard driving rhythm provides a soundtrack for the Arizona high desert. Music made for that burly biker on the southern desert highway or tequila drenched cowboy. RAINBOWS ARE FREE

Rainbows Are Free's sonic locus appears on the rock n roll family tree at the point where proto-metal and heavy psychedelia shared a common apocryphal ancestor before branching off into their own distinct lineages. Believers in Medicine is indicative of this relationship, ripe with heavy riffage and stoner swagger. Rainbows Are Free formed in late 2007 as the conglomerate of several long time heavy rock n roll bands from Norman, OK. In February 2008, RAF self-released an eponymous demo EP. A year later they began work on a full length album Belivers In Medicine which was released in April 2010 on Guestroom Records Records. Both the demo EP and Believers in Medicine were recorded at the legendary Bell Labs recording studio (engineered and mixed by Trent Bell of Chainsaw Kittens fame) in Norman, OK. RAF has been steeped in the festival circuit and playing continuously in support of Believers In Medicine as well as supporting bands of similar ilk such as High on Fire, The Sword, Dead Meadow and Queensryche. SLOW MOVER

Slow Mover is a heavy rock 'n' roll band from Boston, Massachusetts that's heavy on the riffs and full of great hooks. Their lyrics and sound are reminiscent of heavy machinery, broken industry, farm equipment and long-held grudges, which is no small feat for a four-piece group. The lineup consists of Oliver Hinds (guitar/vocals), Andrew Muro (guitar/vocals), Matt Chong (bass) and Colin Smith (drums). Formed in late 2011, Slow Mover moved slowly through the American South for a twoweek tour in the summer of 2012. SOUTHERN BADASS

The music of Southern Badass is made of stoner rock like Down, Corrosion Of Conformity, Sasquatch or Roadsaw, with a pinch of heavy metal like Metallica or Black Sabbath and a touch of Ennio Morricone recalling the univers of Robert Rodriguez or Quentin Tarantino's movies. Let it be clear, this is a humble tribute that Arno BECHET a french 30 years old multiinstrumentalist wants to pay to what he loved those past 15 years in rock and metal music. In this album you would meet characters tortured by their own demons : cowboys seeking for revenge, a voodoo witch whose looking like Marie Laveau, schizo killers With Southern Badass you're on a journey through a burned by a dead sun desert or through foggy, stinky swamps trying to escape from voodoo spells. SUBTERRANEAN DISPOSITION

Subterranean Disposition is a one man Melodic doom/death metal/ ambient recording project hailing from Melbourne, Australia. Its progenitor, Terry Vainoras, is a musicians musician of the Australian metal scene, with a decade and a half long career of recording and performing with many groups, inalmost as many different sub-genres of metal. From the grindcore of Damaged, to the Swedish melodic death stylings of Earth and on through the metallic hardcore of Order of Chaos, the black metal of Hellspawn and also the doom styles of Cryptal Darkness, The Eternal and Insomnius dei,Terry has covered much musical ground and Subterranean Disposition is the melting pot of creativity where the former and recent influences can meet and interplay. Originally inspired by and conceived as a follow up to the music Mark Kelson had written for his and Terrys Collaboration on the Insomnius Dei album Illusions of Silence, the debut self-titled Subterranean Disposition album explores further the use of dissonance and ambience, lending more dynamics to the long passages of darkness and light,

crafted from the influence of early 90s doom metal and modern sludge with forward thinking embellishments in song writing. Also permeating the record are the use of female vocals courtesy of Pheobe Pinnock, and guest saxaphone from D'arcy Molan, both musicians from the Australian scene. Considering all the elements present in the album, you can expect nothing less than an all-encompassing, broading, dark, and experimental ride through devastating darkness on the debut Subterranean Disposition album. THE BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH

United by their love of nineties computer games and movies featuring Steven Seagal, the members of this band possess an endearing level of social awkwardness eclipsed by a vast wealth of musical talent. Astutely self-aware and with a keen sense of humour they are able to produce music which is uninhibited by the expectations of others. "[one of] the best unsigned bands in the UK" - Play Music Magazine Blue Screen are purveyors of heavy rock with a commercial viability. Often combining mighty riffs with catchy vocal melodies, they also have a penchant for the quirky. Choosing to go almost entirely instrumental with their previous, self-titled mini album, which was recorded live at The Barbican Theatre, they demonstrated one side of their varied musical prowess and creative ability. But it is their energetic and entertaining live show that stands them out from the crowd. They are well established within the Southampton area with regular gigs at The Joiners coupled with a residency at The Hobbit. "their enthusiasm is certainly infectious. Cranking out the cocky attitude of (early) Red Hot Chili Peppers, this is a surprisingly ballsy debut" - Planet Sound Demos (Teletext review) Their industry and passion is reflected in their large repertoire and anthology of self produced EPs and music videos not to mention their irreverent zine 'The Rusty Crotch'.

They have featured in and on Scuzz TV, NME and Kerrang radio to name but a few, always being highly rated and tipped for great things. THE REPTILIANS

Pragueressive Applecore Djenk Meatal. It's an odd description of the bands genre, and one that is added to quite regularly by its members. Whatever adjectives they might use to describe themselves, Idaho based band The Reptilians have forged their name into the annals of progressive death metal. Often compared to bands such as Mastodon, Opeth, Isis, and other modern metal heavyweights, the band has received acclaim from across the globe for both its recorded work and live performance. The Reptilians was formed in 2003 by frontman/guitarist Viktor Wilt and drummer Steve McMichael. The two had performed together since 1997 in a band they formed in high school, Dr. Seuss is Dead. Originally intended to be a side project, as the number of compositions under The Reptilians name began to rapidly increase in the early 2000s the two eventually shifted toward making the new band their primary focus. Throughout the following decade The Reptilians released multiple albums and solidified their lineup with legendary Idaho guitar virtuoso Joey Labato taking up the lead guitar position alongside the thunderous bass rumblings of bass maestro Stevie Sheiza. Their 2010 concept album The Mentalist received critical acclaim in the metal underground upon its release and continues to find the band new fans worldwide to this day, available as a free download with complete art package at the bands official website.

The band is currently in the studio tracking two new albums, The Breakers and Trippel Jenkem Rainbow, scheduled for release in late 2012 and early 2013.

______________________________________________________________________ THE WITCHES DRUM

Since their formation in 2009, Cardiff band The Witches Drum vocals (Matt Fry) guitar (Joel Mccauley), guitar (Mat Warren), bass (Owen Griffiths) and drums (Stephen Jones) have fast become the Heavy Rock Spectacular for diehard followers of psychedelic noise. Having threatened to release an EP for some time, Future Kings Of An Empty Throne is the group's first official release on the band's own imprint Levitation Records. Recorded by Fudge Wilson (Exit International) at Sound Space Studios, over four tracks the band swallow influences and choke alchemy out of crowd rousing concoctions. From

Beefheartian barks ('Watch The Freaks Lose It'), tripped out San Fran jams ('Filthy Closets') and chugging Led Zep rock it's a heady mix of '73 era British blues and West Coast stoner doom with a heavy nod at the likes of Kyuss, Big Chief and Monster Magnet. Primordial, loud and the aural embodiment of sleazy rock 'n' roll. As anyone who has witnessed their frenzied shows will testify, their reputation precedes them. A regular fixture on the local South Wales scene playing live alongside the likes of Thorun, Spider Kitten and Zinc Bukowski, front man Matt Fry's glowering reptilian presence and the group's embrace of long forgotten sounds (think Blue Cheer, Sir Lord Baltimore, Josefus et al) is truly something to behold. Like a crazed collision of Arthur Brown theatrics and weighty Electric Wizard vibrations, they've electrified gig goers with big riffs and unforgettable shows. Most memorably at Cardiff's annual Swn Festival, with a storming set and weekend closer. ((facebook|bandcamp)) ______________________________________________________________________ THROW THE GOAT

A small town band with a very big sound, Throw The Goat is comprised of four mountain-dwelling madmen with a thirst for heavy rocking riffage. Formed in 2011 by bassist/lead vocalist Mike Schnalzer, drummer Tim Olivier, lead guitarist Brian "Puke" Parnell and rhythm guitarist Johnny Trash in the town of Idyllwild, CA - Throw The Goat released their debut album Black Mountain on 11 September 2012, produced by Alexander James Pappas, drummer of Finch. TRIGGERMAN HAIL TO THE RIVER GODS "... a suitably titanic-sounding affair that's recommended for anyone compelled by the power of the riff" Edwin McFee HOT PRESS MAGAZINE October 2012 With the release of their latest album, "Hail to the River Gods" TRIGGERMAN have continued to create songs that blend massive riffs, inventive rhythms and huge choruses. The 4-piece from Derry City, N.Ireland described by METAL HAMMER magazine as, "a breath of fresh air to the genre" (Malcolm Dome-MH#223) worked with producer Frankie McClay in Einstein Studios for several months to put together a collection of songs that sits comfortably with their powerful catalogue. Whether it's the percussive swing of "Rage of the Goddess" or the apocryphal tale of

"Blind Side of the Moon" TRIGGERMAN have written a collection of songs which they feel sure will be enjoyed not only in their recorded form but also in the live arena where the band really comes into its own. TRIGGERMAN have had the pleasure and privilege in the past of sharing the stage with acts such as MASTODON, ORANGE GOBLIN,FIREBIRD,DRAGONFORCE and most recently, they played main support at Brazilian legends SEPULTURA's only UK headline show of 2012. Vocalist/Rhythm guitarist Bap says," All the new songs fit well into our set, alongside tunes that are already fan favourites. "The band feels equally at home with the vicious attack of "Rise Of The Woodsmen" or the monstrous groove of "Th'on Strange Brew". What matters is the quality of the riff and the power of the song. "Triggerman's third slab of dirty heavy rock is probably their best yet. ...all heavy boogie with menacing guitars with equally menacing prose, this is probably how rock music should sound, and probably would sound if you stripped away the 'image' and got back down to the meat and bones and gravy of it." 4/5 Mark Diggins - The Rock Pit TRIGGERMAN BAP-Guitar,Vocals RORY-Drums NIALL-Guitar DIXIE-Bass ((facebook)) ______________________________________________________________________

TUNGUSKA MAMMOTH

With the growing desire to play their own music not fit for their cover band, GPS, Maxime Bellerose (ex-Lacrimae Mortalium), Paolo Di Stefano and Mathieu Savage decided to get together with drummer Pierre-Hugues Rondeau (ex-Hope&Horror), to try and fill this void. After a few rehearsals jamming on Melodic Metal riffs, the sound naturally progressed towards what Tunguska Mammoth is now: a combination of the energy of Metal and Hardcore mixed with Stoner groove and progressive rocks intensity. Their first EP intitled First Chapters, recorded in their own rehearsal studio, serves as an introduction for the bands forthcoming concept album. WASTED THEORY

Formed out of a love for classic heavy metal, leather pants, loose women, satanic rituals, and fast cars, the four bastards of Wasted Theory were summoned together to bring forth a new translation in the world of stoner rock. With three massive erections (and one chode) the boys of Wasted Theory fuck through the rock realm with a piss and vinegar mentality.."If it's heavy, if it's bluesy, if it's sleazy, it's probably good enough to be one of our songs". So, throw on your cock rings, and prepare to be sodomized by Wasted Theory.... don't worry... we'll spit on it. WIDOWS

Formed in 2008 in the troubled UK town of Nottingham, WIDOWS play music you can raise a beer and swing a fist to and they do it hard fast and loud, with bone crushing grooves and undeniable swagger! Influenced by the likes of Down, Kyuss, and Clutch, WIDOWS have spent the two years since the release of their debut EP (2010's Raise the Monolith) building up an ever more impressive live set as they chewed up, spat out, and pounded venue after venue into submission, adding weight to their sets with regular new tracks and building the collection of songs that would later become their debut full length CD, Death Valley Duchess. The album was recorded after a stoner rock pilgrimage by members James (guitars) and Adam (vocals) to the Californian desert in a bid for inspiration for both the music and album artwork. The recording itself took place at MOOT GROUP STUDIOS in NOTTINGHAM with Johnny Carter (Pitchshifter) and Paul Yeadon (Bivouac) who's previous clients have included Send More Paramedics, the Plight, and Bring Me The Horizon, as well as the Earache, Copro, and 30 Days of Night labels. The album, DEATH VALLEY DUCHESS was released through Bad News Records on April 27th 2012 in CD and digital download format. The album has been supported since day one of recording with a studio blog, UK tour, music video, playlisting on Kerrang Radio, a multimedia and press campaign by Quite Great Music PR, music video plays on Propellor TV's Metal Tuune and Tuune Rocks shows, PLUSa string of killer gigs including the inaugural Desert Fest with COC and Orange Goblin, another mini UK tour in July, and their first international dates in the form of a tour of Finland with Baton Rogue Morgue in November.
