The Christmas Hamper Society kicked off their 2013 campaign on Nov. 16, and this year things are a little more rushed than they have been in past. Due to Christmas falling on a Wednesday the society only has a few weeks to collect and distribute the hampers. We have no choice but to distribute on the 16 and 17 (of December) which is Monday and Tuesday, said chairman of the society Dave Collins. We need it now, and we need it fast. Collins said he has already received a phone call from Carseland School who apologized, but their food drive is usually held to coincide with the Christmas play, which this year means it will be too late to donate the items to the society. He thinks this may be the same story with a lot of local schools. Were forced into a situation of having to distribute even before the end of the school term, said Collins. The society has begun contacting the schools to see if they will be able to give their contributions early. They are also asking the same of residents. Its going to be a really short campaign this year so please any contributions make them early, said Collins. Collection bins can be found at many of the local businesses including Co-op, No Frills, Sobeys, Shoppers Drug Mart, Bank Athletic Club and many more. Collins said they are requesting the usual hamper items: Stove Top stufng, Kraft Dinner, rice, soup, Cheese Whiz, pasta and more. Strathmore should be really proud that we have a unique Christmas hamper, that we are so inclusive, said Collins. This past year he has researched other community Christmas Hamper Societys and found many just give a Christmas dinner, the turkey and xings and thats all. In Strathmore the Christmas Hamper essentially gives the Wheatland Food Bank a break for the month. Collins said they give those in need a hamper with enough food to get them past the holiday season. This year the society CARSELAND is also offering $269,900something extra to those whoNice have requested a food quiet community, hamper. They will be giving outgarage cookbooks. WADEMSA successfully negotiates contract

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter After years of contract talks and frustrations, members of the Wheatland and District Emergency Medical Services Association (WADEMSA) nally have something to smile about. Talks with Alberta Health Services (AHS) have been successful regarding the ambulance provision contract. This means for our residents that WADEMSA will still be providing services for the next ve to nine years based on this contract, said Rob Witty, director of WADEMSA. Its been an interesting process. We have been negotiating this contract in excess of two years now so were quite excited to be able to provide services to our municipalities. This happens to be our 25 year in operation, 2013 is, and obviously well be in business for a few more years now. The ve-year contract has two possible two year extensions before negotiations over a new contract would have to begin. Witty said the contract includes some subtle shifting changes but those changes are all positive for the staff. Originally WADEMSA was asking for about $500,000 more than AHS was willing to give. They were told there was no more money and they would need to gure out how to slash their budget to meet the AHS dollar gure. The board had a conversation and we decided we wanted to take a bit of a different avenue towards it and a different route, said Darcy Burke, WADEMSA board chairman. The board chose to speak to local politicians to help with the ght. They also wrote letters to Minister Hornes ofce requesting a meeting to be able to discuss some of their stats. Burke said AHS met with the WADEMSA board and the board was able to show why they should stay under the same model as they have over the past 25 years. The provincial average for ambulance calls is approximately 600 calls per unit per year. WADEMSA responds to approximately 1,000 calls per unit per year, almost doubling the provincial average. I think that pretty signicantly stated the fact that we dont t into the funding model that is currently being used in the province for ambulance delivery for their funding model, said Burke. Patient care and the services provided by WADEMSA were also highlighted at the meeting. Brenda Huband, chief executive ofcer for AHS, said Wheatland EMS has provided high quality care for Strathmore area families for 25 years and AHS is proud to partner

with them for a number of more years. Were really excited about this. This is a signicant step forward to ensuring high quality ambulance services continue in Strathmore and area, said Huband. Taking the time to get this right has really ensured that Strathmore and area residents receive safe, timely, high quality EMS care now and for many years to come. This is a great day for us and I think Wheatland EMS would say that as well. Were very ecstatic that weve been able to maintain this and Im hoping that maybe this could be a bit of a catalyst for other rural agencies that still dont have a contract signed. You denitely have to continue to provide the information and ght to keep your system, because it is possible to have it done, said Burke. I think there is a lot of credit owed to management and staff, paramedics, EMTs, the whole ball of wax, thats part of the reason why weve been successful on the contract. There are other municipalities across the province which are still in the midst of their own contract talk. The WADEMSA board hopes their success will help motivate others to keep ghting. We werent willing to decrease the level of service in order to just get a contract. From the board level our direction was to at least maintain and continue the level of service that our citizens have been able to provide, said Witty. We werent willing to accept less money which would mean we would from an operational standpoint probably have to cut services just to make ends meet. That was not our focus, we wanted to be able to maintain and or enhance the delivery that we offer. We werent willing to settle for anything less and we put up a hard ght. Im very pleased with the outcome. I know the members of WADEMSA put in an awful lot of time and hard work to get this accomplished, said Strathmore-Brooks MLA Jason Hale. He said some of his colleagues are ghting over ambulance issues in their constituencies. This is good to show them that there can be some changes made if you dont take no for an answer basically. Burke said the key for WADEMSA was making sure they got the facts to the right people. When contract talks come up again in ve to nine years, the best thing WADEMSA can do is what they are already doing: running a streamlined system and providing dependable patient care.

Lighting up the community

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Christmas is just over a month away and that means many will be lighting up their homes for the holiday season. Canadian Tire is encouraging more people to get into the holiday spirit by entering the third annual Christmas Light Contest. We wanted to do something to engage the community and Christmas lights ts well with our Christmas merchandising. Its just an idea that we had and decided to give it a shot, said Shelley Orford, owner of Strathmores Canadian Tire. The only rule for the contest is you must decorate your house. Some people in the past have turned their yards into a winter wonderland, and others have done a light display. Whatever people do it enhances the neighbourhood and the community, said Orford. The past two years there have been about 20 homes that have entered the contest, and Orford said she would like to see as many entriesas possible. In early December the Orford family will check out all of the entries to determine a winner. Its fun, we love it. We go as a family and look at them all and our kids really enjoy doing that, said Orford. Its been pretty easy to pick, its been obvious. Everyone does a great job, but usually each year theres been one thats really stood out. It wasnt just the house it was the whole yard. It was beyond just a few lights on a house. The winner of the contest will be announced on Dec. 12, and this year they will win a $500 shopping spree. Contest entry forms are available through customer service at Canadian Tire, or in this weeks edition of the Strathmore Times on Page 20.

Help feed High River success

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter When the oodwaters rst hit in late June many people were in shock and awe at the amount of damage caused. Many people and organizations jumped to action, trying to nd ways to help those affected. Here in Strathmore Councillor Rocky Blokland partnered with Koreann Bland to gure out how they too could help. That was when the idea of Help Feed High River was born. The original idea was to load up a truck with beef on a bun and take it down to feed as many people as possible. Blokland said with the help of local catering companies they did eventually take the residents beef on a bun and they were there for a day or two. We cooked approximately 700 pounds of roast beef, said Blokland. Donations began pouring in as people heard about the initiative and in the end $11,292.35 was collected. We realized we could do some more. Word came from High River that they could use some mattresses so $2,500 out of the donations was used to purchase the mattresses, said Blokland. Approximately $3,000 went towards the beef on a bun and the balance of $5,798.19 was just taken to the High River Food Bank by Blokland. The amount of the support from Strathmore wasnt a surprise to Blokland. It was overwhelming when we started, but really Im not surprised, this is what Strathmore does, Strathmore pulls through when we have to, as did a lot of other communities. Blokland said things look better there now than they did in the summer but its still a tough situation. Dire. If you go to High River it looks 180 per cent better than it did back the rst of July. Theres a lot of people in need now and with winter settling in I can only imagine whats going to happen there this winter, said Blokland. A special thank you to Koreann and her group of people, thank you to all donators, thank you Strathmore and Wheatland County. As usual it was a job well done.

New Years Eve Gala

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Trying to nd something to do nearby for New Years Eve has been a challenge in the past for many people in town. There are the bars, or friends houses, but not really many other options. This year the Youth Club of Strathmore is bringing what they will hope be a new tradition. The club will be hosting a New Years Eve Gala at the Civic Centre. Were hoping that this will become our once a year major fundraiser so that were not having to do a bunch of smaller fundraisers throughout the year, said Shannon Zieman, director of the Youth Club of Strathmore. We nd that theres nothing really organized other than maybe bar activities on New Years Eve. We thought it was one event we could look at that was something new that wasnt duplicating another fundraiser. Tickets are on sale for $75, which may seem steep but you get a lot for your money. First off theres the chance to dress up, which is enough incentive for almost any woman. There will also be appetizers, a prime rib dinner, desserts, a midnight lunch, a photo booth, free champagne at midnight and of course party favours. The Al Barrett Band will also be the entertainment for the evening. They are getting quite a bit for $75, and they dont have to drive to Calgary, said Zieman. Were hoping it is a fun, but classy event to start as a yearly event. There will be door prizes, rafes and items up for auction including an autographed Calgary Stampeders jersey and Calgary Hitmen tickets. There is also a chance to win through an early bird draw; the prize is to be announced but the deadline to get your name in is Nov. 30. Tickets can be purchased by contacting the Youth Club of Strathmore at 403-934-4918 or by calling Strathmore FCSS at 403-934-9090.

In need of support for Christmas

Continued from Page 1 A lot of our clients that we see come through the door are young families. We give them all this food and we know that they dont know how to cook, what are they going to do with all this stuff? So this year we decided to give everybody who wants one a free simple cookbook, said Collins. The hamper society has purchased 100 Campbells Simple Recipes and Value Drug Mart is donating 100 Companys Coming cookbooks. When people come in to pick up their hamper

they will be asked if they would like a cookbook. Collins said there is often so much left over from the turkeys that some people may not know what to do with it, so the cookbook will help give them ideas. Cash donations are always appreciated by the Christmas Hamper Society. The cash is used to purchase perishable items like milk and eggs. Cheques can be made out to the Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper society c/o Strathmore FCSS, and then be delivered to 680 Westchester Rd.

Sonic and Brodie

PAT FULE Fule for Thought Lately, Im starting to feel like Ive become the hedgehog whisperer as Ive nally been able to get Sonic to come out of his house. Hes actually coming out on his own sometimes, but I think its the meal worms that are the biggest draw for this. Ive even been able to feed him by hand without being scared of losing a nger! I know, I know its a little hedgehog! But this one was huge when we got him, and he had attitude. I bugged Debbie all summer that she bought a badger by mistake! Any time we went near him, hed make a loud snufing noise and tense. Tensing makes his bristles stand up, and its like trying to pet a wire brush. Now, hes starting to relax, and we can actually pet him, as hes chowing down on his smelly mealworms! Live ones are the best, and he actually gets incredibly excited for these. However, for the guy feeding the squiggly worms and listening as he crunches them up, its kind of gross! Sonic is actually coming out on his own, and making noises to get our attention. Even our dog Brodie stops by the cage to sniff him and see what this strange animal is doing! Again this Halloween, Brodie had to wear a costume. In the past hes been a hot dog, a ghost, and a prison inmate. This year, I gured we really needed to get him a cool costume. In Calgary, I was able to nd a costume where hed be the envy of the neighborhood dogs, and not the butt of their jokes. So, I was able to get him a Captain America costume! He looked awesome, and I think it even helped his self-esteem, as he didnt struggle against it at all! In fact, it actually felt like he strutted a little, as if he knew he was now the coolest dog on the block! He loves Halloween, as there are so many kids coming to the door for him to visit. In fact, we have to put a leash on him near the door, because he wants to join the trick or treaters as they leave! Brodie is now almost 14, and hes denitely slowed. At Halloween, he missed seeing some kids, because he doesnt hear the doorbell any more. Hes almost totally deaf, and sadly, we have to make a lot of noise when we go to him because he gets scared if you dont he jumps. Sometimes I wonder what hes thinking, because hell get up for no reason, go to his little front door window, and just look. Its as if he hears what he thinks are sounds, and he must investigate! The dog that could hear a dog treat wrapper on the oor below, cant hear us call his name, and its hard to watch. He seems unsure of himself at times, and hes especially sad when hes left alone. I always worry what he feels like when were all away for a day. The little dog we called pup and kiddo is now called old fella and Grandpa. Its hard to watch the changes in my pal. Hes not able to do the things he used to, but he still tries. Weve recently been told his hind legs are not receiving the nerve signals as strongly as before, because his back legs give out on him. When we rst moved to this house, we thought it was funny that his back legs would slide on the hardwood as he turned corners. Now sadly, we know hes losing some control over them. Hes now not able to jump up on a bed or couch, and the vet said it is a kindness to lift him up, as hes lost a lot of leg strength. When he wants to come up from the basement, he often hesitates and stares up at what he has to face. Weve taken to carrying him up these stairs when we can, because its become difcult for him. Our dog has made me a better person; hes taught me about devotion, unconditional love, and kindness. Hes been absolutely loved by my wife and kids, and hes returned their love just as much. There were times when hed stay with me for hours and ignore the others. Now, its as if he wants to make sure he spends time with everyone. Hell get up at any time, nd where someone is, and scratch to get in the door for a visit. To see my grown daughter beam, when her dog has decided he wants to see her, is a wonderful thing. I often kick myself mentally, because I look ahead and see sadness for us. I dont know how long we get to have this dog, but he will always know hes loved. When it does come to the end, our family will be there to hold him, so he wont be scared. Well tell him that well see him in the morning, and that we love him and when he does slip away, hell feel its just another nap with the Fules. I never knew that at one time Id own a hedgehog and a dog. I also never knew two little animals could affect me the way they have.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Positive change in our community

To the Editor Did you know that there are children attending our high school that have to work to support themselves and go to school? How hard must that be? The homework load is so heavy and there are only so many hours in a day. Did you know that there are children in our high school that dont get breakfast or have the food at home for providing a lunch? Thats a long day - imagine smelling the food coming out of the cafeteria and your stomach growling. Now try to focus on math. This is not a new problem but we do have a new solution. Rather than your donating money, we are asking that you donate just a bit of your time. You can search Helping Hands Aviva to nd our voting location which is (http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf17039). There you quickly register your email address, takes about two minutes. Now you can vote. Thats it. You get one vote per email address per day. We need to get to tenth place in our category to enter the seminals. With your help we can do this. It will take the support of the community. When we make it to the nal round then the school is guaranteed $5,000. If our project is judged worthy then the school will get $150,000. Go to the site, read about the need. Make a comment. Share a story. We only have until Nov. 25 to make it. So please get everyone in your household with an email address to register and vote. Vote every day. Spread the word. Thank you. Heather Roberts, Strathmore

Remembering our veterans

To the Editor We attended the Remembrance Day service at the Civic Center. It appeared to be a very nice service paying respect to and honouring our veterans those with us and those who have gone before. We were seated in the back one-third of the audience and so were unable to hear a lot of the program, especially the speech by Clarence Wolf Leg. We know we missed it because we could hear the people near the front of the audience laugh at some of his comments. If more than half of the large group that attended the service feel left out of the proceedings, they may start to wonder why did we come? The problem was the delivery of sound to the whole auditorium. If the Legion supplied their own sound system, please accept this letter as notice that your system was inadequate. If the Civic Center sound system was used, then this letter is notice to the town that the system was not working as we believe it should to serve a large crowd. It may be time to budget for a sound system overhaul to better serve the facility users. To our veterans we salute you. We will remember you. Alan and Gerta West Strathmore

Planning for the future

To the Editor I would like to inform readers of the present opportunity to contribute to the discussion on the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan, which will affect the entire southern portion of Alberta from the Saskatchewan to B.C. borders. The Alberta government will conduct public and stakeholder consultations through Nov. 28 at 18 locations. For a full list, of meetings, see landuse.alberta.ca. The Wildrose Ofcial Opposition believes in responsible land use planning, local autonomy, protecting the environment, and enhancing property rights. Unfortunately, the SSRP signicantly reduces the autonomy of local municipalities and centralizes decision-making around the provincial cabinet table. SSRP will force municipalities to conform to the plan once its passed, with the province taking enforcement measures should municipalities not comply. SSRP moves in lock step with the initial version of Bill 28 which proposed to override municipal independence and impose forced regionalization. While our strong opposition forced a retreat on Bill 28, Land-use Plans like the SSRP are still moving forward. Municipalities deserve local autonomy to make their own land use decisions without the imposition of provincially created centralized planning models. Another concern that Ive heard raised is that the SSRP will limit oil and gas development and economic opportunities along the Eastern Slopes, as conservation areas are proposed to increase from 11 to 33 per cent. While conservation is important, the economic effect of this proposal could present revenue challenges for local municipalities as well as create provincial liabilities to provide compensation to industry. SSRP may also affect recreation areas and traditional hunting, shing, camping and as well as ATV trails. I encourage recreationists to attend a consultation to nd out more about how the plan could affect traditional recreation land uses, and residents to attend to have their voices heard and verify how their interests may be affected by the SSRP. Thought for the Week ~

Canada on-track to decit elimination

KEVIN SORENsON, M.P., CROWFOOT Parliamentary Report Members of Parliament have been in our constituencies for Veterans Week and now we are returning to the House of Commons to work during the weeks leading up to the year-end and adjournment for Christmas. Our Conservative government has unveiled Canadas Fall 2013 Update of Economic and Fiscal Projections. This is an update of the work and scal projections announced in the spring 2013 Federal Budget. This annual update is important to Canadians so that we can see how well our economy is doing since the budget was announced. Keeping track of the household budget is something we all do paying the bills, guring out how much to set aside for specic expenses, or planning for those other expenses that you know are coming - like re-shingling the roof next summer. Sometimes we make tough decisions to balance the family budget, like sticking with that aging snowblower or fridge for one more year. Why do we make those tough decisions? Because we know it is the responsible thing to do not just for today, but for the long-term. Most of us agree that this is exactly the type of planning that governments should do as well. Unfortunately, from countries in Europe to major cities south of the border, some governments have tried to avoid making responsible decisions and paid the price. Thats why our Conservative government has been so relentlessly focused on getting back to balanced budgets. During the worst of the global recession, when spending was needed to protect Canadians jobs, we brought in Canadas Economic Action Plan. This temporary initiative helped shelter Canada from the worst of the recession and emerge with the best job creation record in the G-7, with over one million net new jobs created. With the global recession past, our government is now focused on balancing the budget. That means working hard to make sure federal government spending is as efcient and effective as possible including reducing all unnecessary spending. We are also freezing the spending of government departments to ensure they stay within set budgets. I am happy to report our efforts are getting real results: government program spending has fallen by billions of dollars over the past three straight years, a rst for any government in Canadas history. We are rmly on track for a balanced budget in 2015 as planned, with an expected surplus of almost $4 billion in 2015-16. Even better, Canada has the best long-term nancial standing compared to all countries in the G-7, ahead of countries like Germany or Japan. Whats more, by focusing on making government spending more efcient rather than raising taxes, we are managing to keep taxes low for Canadians. Since 2006, our Conservative government has cut taxes 160 times we have lowered the average familys tax bill by over $3,200. We continue to fund investments in healthcare and other important social programs that families depend on. Canada has the lowest tax burden as a percentage of the economy in over 50 years. We have a stable economic outlook and by continuing to remain squarely focused on the long view, and taking strong, decisive action whenever necessary along the way, Canada will remain on the right track. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this or previous columns you may write to me at 4945-50th Street, Camrose, Alberta, T4V 1P9, call 780-608-4600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780608-4603 or e-mail Kevin.Sorenson.c1@parl.gc.ca.

Wildrose prepares
SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor The Wildrose Party recently held their Annual General Meeting in Red Deer on Oct. 25-26, with party members once again supporting the leadership of Danielle Smith. In her opening address, Smith talked about Albertans character in overcoming challenges, like those exhibited in the summer oods, and how that character denes Alberta. We are excellent because of the people, said Smith. We are dened every day, by the decisions we make every day, for our families, friends and our fellow human beings. Albertans dont complain; Albertans act out of generosity, compassion and duty. She commented that the opposition party was not addressing issues in the manner Albertans expect. The ever widening gap between who we are and the leadership we get, is whats keeping us from achieving, what in my heart I know we are capable of, said Smith. Here we will start showing Albertans our character. The decisions we make in this room tomorrow, will be the decisions that dene us; so lets make the right decisions. Lets be a party and government that reects, rather than contradicts what we are, and give Albertans what they deserve. The meetings went on to re-examine party policies and set goals for the coming sessions of parliament and the rest of the election term. Amendments, deletions and additions of new policy were made. For the complete list of changes see their website (www.wildrose.ca/media/2013/08/Policy.pdf). Just a few examples are: Entrench human rights for everyone with endorsement of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Reduce greenhouse gases by advancing, implementing, and cooperating on technology, research, conservation, and alternative renewable energy sources. Entrench individual property rights in the Alberta Bill of Rights and Land and Property Rights Act. Further support for agriculture. Implement full utilization of existing community hospitals, and also encourage future construction of new facilities to concentrate on the community hospital model. Balance the budget with cap on spending, based on population growth and ination rates. Protection and preservation of ground water for drinking purposes. Dedicate surpluses to municipalities from a public prioritized infrastructure. Strathmore-Brooks MLA Jason Hale said the meetings went very well and the Wildrose Party continues to make their constituents the rst priority. He said they were already making an impact on the governments plan to modernize government through the establishment of regional boards. It was basically taking away the local autonomy, said Hale about Bill 28. We are ensuring that the decisions made by this government, that effect our area, will support our constituents and their local decision makers. Continued on Page 10

Feedback needed
SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Resident feedback was listed as an integral component of drafting the Southern Saskatchewan Regional Plan (SSRP), presented at the open house on Nov. 7 at the Strathmore Civic Centre. Facilitators gathered some resident feedback at a workshop session held earlier in the day. We are asking for input from Albertans on the draft plan. We know it is very important to get that, it is very critical, said Neal Watson, public affairs ofcer with Environment and Sustainable Resource Development.. Watson said the initial draft, which was discussed at the workshop, was designed through advice from a Regional Advisory Council (RAC) comprised of a group of individuals (not from government sources) with different types of experience and expertise, in a number of areas. The provincial government asked them to consider terms of reference and provide advice to use for developing the subsequent draft. Public work sessions and open houses are being held throughout the province, to disseminate the information developed and allows the public to consider the draft and submit their input. Watson encouraged people to go to the website www.landuse.alberta.ca to see the draft and complete the workbook online, or mail it to the address listed, by the deadline of Jan. 15, 2014, so the nal draft can go before the legislature in the spring of 2014. We very much want to hear from as many people as possible. This plan is in draft form and not nal form. It is why we are out here nding out what people think about different aspects; what they like and dont like. We build these plans with the input from Albertans and a lot of different stakeholders and groups, First Nations and municipalities, said Watson. Breakdowns for consideration fell under categories of economic development, agriculture, energy, renewable energy, forestry, transportation, tourism, human development, ecosystems and the environment, water and watersheds, air quality, environmental management, human development with proposed strategies for each area. Part of the draft provides non-binding guidelines and part contains binding regulations that will be put forward for legislative approval. Previous SSRP information sessions showed 47.4 per cent of the respondents strongly agreed with their vision statement. There was less support for new development of resources in the coal based and oil industries, and more support for bioenergy and renewable resources. For environmental strategies, the respondents were split with some undecided or not sure or those leaning heavier on agreement. The majority also reserved agreement on social strategies, only agreeing somewhat with the plans. For water protection initiatives, respecting private land ownership, strong conservation measures and stewardship, accommodating multiple purpose land use, integrated planning and streamlined efciency for regulation processes, addressing First Nations issues and improved economic development, there was strong or somewhat strong support; however, approximately 25 percent of the respondents in most categories didnt know or had no answer. Many found the initiatives outlined in the plan too vague and wanted more concrete details. A sampling of responses from attendees at the Strathmore workshop indicated a desire for: preservation of municipal decision making, with provincial alignment and better funding support more specifics and less general references better protection and support for agricultural interests and a split between more supports for rural interests, or more inclusive reference to all Albertans Stronger protection for head water, ground water and better dened water quality standards, and combining water storage with recreational water areas better and speedier land reclamation enforcement for resource development projects, with solutions found for the ground water and seismic use disagreements Integrated and streamlined resource processes prohibition of deforestation in headwater areas and industrial lumber sales pros and cons to voluntary stewardship programs and more investigation needed incentives or land swaps to protect grassland areas and better education programs, with no sales of public land to private interests more wetland reclamation strategies general support for greater recreational areas, but wanted existing areas maintained and improved, with concerns over increased off-road vehicle permissions and a split between user pay and provincial free campsite use health services and communication for connected communities was missing preservation of culture and heritage was supported and input from First Nations peoples should be included in all areas Responses given at the Strathmore workshop will be combined with other public input, generated in other regions, mail-in responses and online submissions. They will be posted on the land use Alberta website for people to view.

Wildrose excited after last months general meeting

Continued from page 9 He said Wildrose members of parliament objected to Bill 28 in the legislature. They had municipal ofcials contact government ofcials, started a letter writing campaign, which led to Bill 28 being suspended for further discussion. He said the government is now discussing the New Petroleum Marketing Act and Hale said he will continue to support individual property rights. For over 13 years Wheatland EMS staff have been collecting Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes from schools around the community. This week was the national collection week and in Strathmore and Carseland alone there were 582 shoeboxes collected. Melissa Muenchrath and Carlene Utke were the EMT volunteers who collected the boxes on Nov. 18. The shoeboxes are packed according to age and sex and they are filled by Canadians with hygienic supplies, toys and candy to be given to less fortunate children around the world.

We havent forgotten High River

WENDI TASHLIKOwICH Times Contributor Aubrie Hunter, a Grade 6 student at Sacred Heart Academy, is getting ready for Advent with her fellow classmates. Advent starts on Dec.1 and Aubrie was worried that their sister school in High River would not have the items they need to celebrate the coming season because of the ood. The school raised over $2,000 to be donated to the High River schools, as well as collected clothes, bibles, rosaries, crosses and prayer cards with the help of Pastor Dawn and her Lutheran Church family. Our school always looks so beautiful, we have wreaths, nativity sets, Jesse trees, Christmas Trees and lights, what about the High River Schools? We cant forget about them, explains Hunter to her principal Paulette Chotowetz. Aubrie would like the entire community, which she is proud to be a part of, to help send Celebration items to Holy Spirit in High River. There is a donation box set up at Sacred Heart Academy where Advent items-specically nativity sets, advent candles, tree ornaments and Christmas decorations-will happily be accepted. The season is fast approaching and the donations are needed before the end of the month. AUBRIES WISH Most people I know have been affected by the 2013 oods one way or another, my grandparents Ron & Maeve Hunter live in High river. They had to come stay with us for a month. nally go back to High River and see the kind of shape their home was in, we all went to clean it up. For the most part my grandparents are really lucky, they lost everything in the basement but, they still have a home and can rebuild it. One of my Grandpas friends Brayan lost his home this week, it had to be ripped down. Brayan and his wife now live in the portable housing just out side of town. It makes me sad every day when I think of the devastation families are still dealing with in High River. I wanted to do something that could make people smile so I thought of Christmas decorations, I picked this because it is a time of year to celebrate our faith. I am hoping my School SHA and the Strathmore community will bring any extra Christmas Decoration they might have to our School by Dec. 5th so we can take them to Holy Spirit Academy. We want to collect these decorations as a gift from one school to another. Aubrie Hunter 6R SHA

Anytime Fitness opening soon in Strathmore

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter If fast food restaurants can be open 24/7 to serve fatty calories, why cant there be a tness facility open 24/7 to help burn calories? Thats the thought of Chestermere Anytime Fitness owners Aman Antal and Stephan Boily. The two men are opening their second location here in Strathmore in the spring of 2014. When Antal lived in Hinton, Alberta he found it was lacking a good tness club. When he went to Calgary he saw there were many great clubs, and wondered why Hinton didnt have something like that. Thats why I came up with the idea of having Anytime Fitness gym in Chestermere, because my family used to live here and I would come and visit them and I would still have to go to Calgary to work out, said Antal. So I basically opened something just to enjoy myself. When he was looking around at other communities he found that something similar was needed here in Strathmore. Opening a 24-hour tness facility will give more people an opportunity to work out because they will be able to do it on their time, any time of the day or night. If the club in Strathmore looks anything like the one in Chestermere, it will be a big open space with plenty of room to add equipment as the club, and its members, grow. Anytime Fitness offers variety in cardio equipment, ranging from treadmills, ellipticals, Precor AMT macines, rowing machine, stepper and bikes, and if you still want more then they have expresso interactive bikes where you can race against other people on a bike or play games like chase a dragon. It just makes cardio activity more fun. The other thing about expresso biking is the resistance of the bike pedle changes as you go uphill or downhill and this makes it more of a live experience. There is also a large section with free weights ranging from 5lbs to 110lbs. One stereotype that Antal and Boily would like to get away from is that a gym is meant for bodybuilding. Its not just about bodybuilding, we try to promote health and tness, said Antal. There are of course bodybuilders that are members of the club, but the goal is to promote overall health and tness, and to create a sense of community among the members. Trainers are available to the members at an additional cost. They are on contract and will work your schedule. For some the extra fee isnt feasible; Anytime Fitness has thought of that too. The website Anytime Health is a free website where you can track your calories and workouts. There is also a question and answer section and a trainer is available 24/7 through the site and much more. Antal said it is like Facebook except its all about health and tness. So if you dont want to go with the personal trainer option you always have the option of Anytime Health. Its something we give on top of our membership, said Antal. Another option for the members is tness-on-request classes. Say you want to take Zumba or a spin class but you cant make it to the live class, or maybe youre too shy for the live class. The tness on demand classes allow you to schedule a class of your choosing that will play in a private room on a projection screen. The classes are available 24/7 and members can schedule a time in advance to ensure they can take the class they want when they will be at the club. The fear of not knowing how to use a piece of equipment is also taken away at Anytime Fitness. Many of the machines have a brief instructional video that shows you how to use it to target a certain muscle group. Antal and Boily are excited to open the new location in Strathmore, which will be next to Starbucks. They are currently looking to hire local residents to staff the new club. We support local employment, all of our staff here is local from Chestermere. So we want to support local employment there so we will only hire local people, thats our preference, said Antal. Having experience working in a gym isnt a necessity, because it is something that can be trained. We are not looking just for someone professional for the gym, were looking for someone who is more of a community leader in tness, who is more of a members person, who know what the need is in the community and who can lead the group, said Antal. There are no drop-in rates for Anytime Fitness. Antal said there is a sixmonth minimum membership and rates vary from $49 to $65 a month. The reason the club doesnt allow drop-in members or monthly passes is because they want the members to take ownership of the club and feel proud and relate themselves to the product. Antal said drop-in members dont take care of the club the same as members who are in a contract, though drop-ins do improve business revenue. Its not just for the money that we are into this business, it is more of providing the best possible services to the members in small communities at a most affordable rate and building the culture in the club, where members feel proud and enjoy working out, said Antal. There is a discounted hero membership, which is available to reghters, police, nurses and doctors. Anytime Fitness has over 2,000 locations worldwide, with 1,800 of those in North America alone. There are six locations in and around Calgary, and with a membership people will be able to access any of the centres. Access to the club is safe and secure. There will be a state of the art security system, and entrance to the gym will only be available with the proper access key. There are also safety necklaces that members can wear while working out that have a panic button, which will alert help. Antal said they are planning a presale on memberships, and will be offering their lowest rate ever to the rst 100 people to sign up. The presale will happen early in the New Year and he recommends people like the Anytime Fitness Strathmore Facebook page to nd out more details.

Roadhouse wins best burger contest

SHaNNON LEClaIR Times Reporter For the second time in three years the Roadhouse has won the best burger. The rst time, in 2011, was for their smokehouse burger. This year it was the old fashioned burger that took the title. Sometimes people dont like extras on their burger like BBQ sauce and that was what the smokehouse burger had so we just wanted a regular burger, its got cheese on it, bacon on it, so its a pretty basic burger, said Belinda Derraugh, general manager for the Roadhouse. The old fashioned burger also comes with lettuce, tomato and onion. Derraugh said she wasnt really surprised that they won again. She thinks they have good burgers and said the key is that a butcher in Calgary makes the burgers to the restaurants specications. Its the burger. Its not whats on it, or in it, its the actual burger, said Derraugh. Next year Derraugh said she hopes more people enter the best burger contest. She said everyone likes to win and she thinks its good for the town when there are friendly competitions. I just think if there was a whole pile of more people doing it, its more fun, said Derraugh.

The Roadhouse claimed Strathmores Best Burger for 2013. The contest, put on by the Strathmore Times and the Town of Strathmore, featured some of the best burgers from town. Times Publisher Mario Prusina (l) and former councilor Earl Best (r), performing his last duty on council, presented Belinda Derraugh and her staff the 2013 award. Taya Schneider Photo

I think it is good for business, its just one added thing more. Any plaques or anything we can win is better than none. One of the biggest things she likes about the contest is that its a way to show the kitchen staff that people like what theyre cooking back there. Its good for their morale. Derraughs favourite burger is the chuckwagon burger, but she said they arent sure yet which one they will be entering into next years contest.

Final push for Aviva Helping Hands program

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Strathmore High School (SHS) missed round one of voting, and did not qualify for the nals during round two but by voting for the Helping Hands program in the last and third round by Nov. 25, SHS may qualify for a $150,000 bursary from the Aviva Community Fund. We want to create a bursary in our school to help kids that come from families that are disadvantaged, said SHS principal Gary Reagan of the Helping Hands initiative. Their ability to participate fully in school is very much limited by the resources of their parents. Reagan believes that the program could aid students with eldtrips, breakfasts, sports, and extra-cirricular activities. Some of these kids even struggle with nding a place; you have kids, sometimes, their parents throw them out and they nd themselves in tough situations, he said. The whole philosophy of it was to have this nancial safety net for kids that might struggle or drop out, or may not have the means to support themselves. Communities and schools are competing for the money across Southern Alberta; the top 10 programs with the most votes from the three rounds (30 in total) will be guaranteed at least $5,000. The $150,000 will be awarded to rst place, judged by an Aviva panel. Weve been working on this for a number of years, Reagan said. We have limited funds sometimes we get donations. But this was a good t; the idea of how you can make a difference in your school, and in the community and affect the greatest number of kids. SHSs Leadership class has been encouraging their peers to register and vote, hoping to make the nal top ten round, but everyone and anyone is welcome to follow suit at http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf17039. Remember to vote everydat from now until Nov. 25.

Joyce (Woodliffe) Wise

children came home from school. Then, it was their turn to herd the sheep into the corrals for the night. These sheep were sold before Christmas. They also bought 2,000 chicks, fed them, until they were between ve to seven lbs, then killed and cleaned them, and sold them as dressed chickens, around Rockyford, Rosedale and Drumheller for a $1 per chicken! Joyce remembers that the day they moved into their new house in 1963 was the same day President Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas. In July 1975, Charles passed away from cancer, leaving Joyce and their 16-year-old son Russel to take over the farm. By then Wendy was a teacher in Calgary, Lon was a pilot with Pacic Western Airlines, and Gordon was an industrial engineer in Lethbridge. That fall, the neighbours helped Russel harvest the crop. His cousin Kenneth Wise helped Russel to learn all the ins and outs of farming. As Russel was still in school, they sold all the cattle and pigs, and concentrated on growing grain. After she was widowed, Joyce spent 16 years on the farm. In 1978, Joyce and her friend Jean Kirby went on a six week trip to Asia, seeing many different places and had a wonderful time. In 1991, she met and married Jim Spring from Vancouver, and moved out to the coast. By this time, Joyce owned a house in Mesa, Ariz. which she sold and purchased a house in Yuma, Ariz. Jim bought a dune buggy, and they spent days traveling through the sand dunes and desert. It was here that they became interested in panning for gold. They would pan rock in dried out creek beds, and she says they always found grains of gold. Jim sold his house in Vancouver, and they bought a house in Sechelt along with two Honda trail bikes. They used these to travel on logging roads in the mountains, through bear country, mainly black bears but they did have one encounter with a grizzly bear! Jim also owned a cabin on Keats Island in the Strait of Georgia. They really loved it there, because there were no roads or vehicles, and everything had to be brought by boat. After Jim passed away in March 2011, Joyce decided to move back to the Prairies and moved into Wheatland Lodge in Strathmore. She says this was a wonderful decision, as she knows so many of the residents. There have been many changes in Strathmore the old population was 500 and now its over 12,000. Its still a great place to live, and is near her old homes. Every spring and fall, she spends two days at the farm with Russel. She makes sure hes seeding correctly, and still operates a combine!

WHY PARENT? A few years ago I read an article in MacLeans magazine entitled The Case Against Having Kids. It outlined the many reasons why a small minority were choosing to not have children. Some of the main reasons this group gave ranged from the negative effect children have on your career, your bank account and your relationship with your spouse. No one would argue that parenting is a difcult path but would we be able to answer why we have chosen to make the sacrice and welcome children into our lives. One of my favorite books on parenting is a book called Sacred Parenting by Gary Thomas. He poses the question to us why do you parent? Have you thought about this question? Some may say we want children so we can pass on our name or our DNA. Others hope their children will take care of them when they are old. Biblically, God tells us in Genesis 1:28 Be Fruitful and multiply teaching us in Deuteronomy to raise our children to know and love our Heavenly Father. Parenting is for the glory of our Lord: There are a lot of reasons to have children but the most important one is to glorify God. When this is our lter for all parenting issues it changes how we react. We no longer think about the return of our hard work but focus on our children and their understanding of who God is and their relationship with Him. Parenting is not just raising good children but raising them to follow Christ with their heart, soul and spirit. Godly parenting is hard work and takes a lot of energy, but I can think of no better method for Christ to use to help sanctify me. Parenting is a daily reminder I am a sinful person raising a sinful child. It keeps me mindful of my dependence on my Lord, and the love our Father has for us Donna Fitzgerald Childrens Director Strathmore Alliance Church

Joyce was born in Strathmore on Dec. 11, 1927. Her father was Bill Woodliffe, the town barber, and her mother was Arie Woodliffe (Downey), the town hairdresser. Joyce attended school in Strathmore where she learned to swim in the dugout swimming pond, south of what is now Sacred Heart Academy. Ice skating was on the rink just up the road from The Strathmore Hotel location. She took piano lessons, and learned to play the coronet. On two occasions the Strathmore Band played in the Calgary Stampede Parade. She attended Western Canada High School in Calgary, then decided to follow her mothers footsteps and attended hairdressing school before working in Brooks and Bassano. In 1949, she married Charles Wise of Rockyford, and moved to the Wise Homestead just north of town. A few weeks later, there was a terrible accident when power lines fell on the telephone lines, charging these lines with over 169,000 volts of electricity and setting the house on re. Charles brother, Owen, tried to put out the re with his hands and was electrocuted and died. Charles Dad put on a pair of rubber boots, and also tried to put out the re. The power went through his body, before exiting through his big toe. He was badly injured, and spent over two years recovering in hospital in Calgary. All the power circuits and transformers were blown out in Rockyford. Following this, Charles and Joyce took over running the Wise farm. She says they always had three or four hired men working for them as well as a cook. At this time there were 5,000 sheep and a sheep herder, on pasture 12 miles from the farm. The sheep herder lived in a granary, and every two weeks Charles and Joyce would take him groceries. At this time they also had a lot of pigs. They took about eight pigs to Calgary every couple of weeks to be slaughtered, and Joyce would get about $45, the price of one pig, for herself and at that time, their three children Wendy, Lon and Gordon. After six years they sold this farm and bought another farm two miles south of Rockyford. Their fourth child, Russel was born here. They raised around 270 cows and 300 pigs, at this farm. She remembers that the years 1960/1961 were very poor farming years, as they were hailed out. So, they went to the auction at Brooks, where they purchased 2,000 sheep. She got to bid on all the lots of sheep, which she found very exciting. Back home, there were no fences around their land, so they had to herd them by day, until the

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Crowther Memorial Junior High Schools (CMJHS) Cart Wars fundraiser gets underway on Nov. 25. Cart Wars is an annual food collection for the Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society. The idea is to have a bit of a competition, try and get the kids more motivatedto bring in food for those less fortunate for the Christmas Hamper Society, said CMJHS teacher Terry Motley. Motleys leadership students will collect the donations every couple of days and count them to gure out which pod is leading as the days go on. The carts are at the front doors and provide a good visual reminder for the students to bring something in the next day. The Christmas Hamper Society provides the school with a wish list of item, which is then posted around the school and given to students upon request. We have found a lot of kids get in the spirit of competition so they will bring in lots of food, said Motley. In the past we have had way over 1,000 items of food which translates into 3,000 or 4,000 points for whoever is winning usually. Each item collected is worth a different point value. A bag of our may be 10 points, where a pack of noodles may only be worth one. On Dec. 1 the winning pod will be announced. In the past the winning pod has won a free afternoon where they get to watch a movie and enjoy snacks for the afternoon. Motley said if someone outside of the school wants to donate food and help out, that would be ne and they would happily accept it.

The UFA Bisons celebrated a 1-0 win at home on Nov. 16 against the Calgary Royals. Following a 2-2 with the Lethbridge Hurricanes the next day, the Bisons are now at the top of their division with a 10-6-1 record.

Bisons focus on defense

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter With 53 goals scored for this season, and 51 scored against, UFA Bisons coach Dan MacDonald wanted his team to focus more on team play in their own end. The team obeyed, and had a low scoring weekend: a 1-0 home win over the Calgary Royals on Nov. 16, and a 2-2 tie with the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Nov. 17. Were trying to work on defense, MacDonald said. Weve been giving up too many goals. Our emphasis on defense has been taking away from the offense. Bisons goalies Carter Seminuk and Garrett Mason split the games on the weekend, with Seminuk earning the shutout at home. Maybe Im cheating a little bit on how well we play defensively, our goaltending was very good on the weekend, MacDonald said. Theyre both playing well so they each get their game. Mason faced 26 shots, while the Bisons put 42 on the Hurricanes net. With three minutes remaining in the 1-1 game, the Bisons took the lead, only to have it tied up again 10 seconds later by Lethbridge. We shouldve had more goals anyway, we just didnt nish, MacDonald said. It wasnt great. I think we thought we had it won and thats just another learning experience for us. We let up right after we scored, and you cant do that. We paid the price. I think we should have won that game. Offensive defenseman Tristan Thompson returned from injury this weekend, but earned no points; Mason McCarty scored both goals in the tie, and is second in league scoring with 22 points. MacDonald is pleased with McCartys play, but wants everyone to play as a unit. We want to be better as a group, with more team play, he said. So thats what were working on now, and its starting with our defensive zone; we have to forecheck differently, we have to kill penalties, and work on the powerplay. The Bisons are top of their division with a 10-6-1 record. We always thought we had a good team. We think now, we should get better, MacDonald said. We lost some games where we probably could have won those games I think, if we were where were going to be in say a month from now. Well see how it works out. Were quite happy we are where we are. We wanted to be ghting for rst or second place.

The Strathmore Storm welcomed over 200 players to the Family Centre from Nov. 15-17 for their annual Atom tournament. Over 16 teams were involved, including four from Strathmore. Winners for each division were: Strathmore for A, Indus for B, Airdrie for C, and Midnapore for D.

Atom tournament a success

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The Strathmore Storm hosted their annual Atom Invitational from Nov. 15-17 at the Strathmore Family Centre and even took home gold in the A division. The weekend went very smoothly, thanks to the help of all the parent helpers. The tournament was fantastic. It went over very well this year, Angie Riley said, tournament committee member. Our whole Atom parent group pitches in volunteers for the rafe table, we did a meal this year, for running time clocks, selling 50/50 tickets. Its denitely run by our entire parent group. There are six main committee members, but roughly 40 parents assisted with the tournament festivities. Ive been involved in it for three years; its been going on for years, for as long as Atom has been in Strathmore, Riley said. It cant be run without the parents, thats for sure. Sixteen teams, and roughly 200 players, competed this weekend, including four teams from Strathmore. Volunteers hosted a lunch for all players and coaches on Nov. 16. Each of the teams had three pool games before their division nals on Nov. 17. Division winners included Indus for B, Airdrie, for C, and Midnapore for D.

Belles face Calgary

STEVE WILSON U19 Belle Ringette The U19 Belle Ringette Team travelled to Calgary on Sunday, Nov. 17 for a rescheduled game against the South Calgary Legacy. The game got off to a very fast pace right from the beginning, and was played with excellent sportsmanship on both sides. Although Calgary had the edge over Strathmore, the girls never gave up throughout the whole two periods, and despite missing four of their regular teammates, they continually kept taking the game to their opponents with some great teamwork and passing. The nal score ended up being 13-5 for Calgary, with

Lecavalier, Alberta earn bronze

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Strathmores Sarah Lecavalier, named to Team Alberta at the National Womens U18 Championship, won bronze after defeating Team Quebec on Nov. 10, 6-5. Its the provinces rst ever medal in the tournament. Eight teams represented different areas of Canada from Nov. 6-10 at the Markin MacPhail Centre; Alberta nished at the top of their pool with one regulation win and two overtime wins, against Manitoba, Ontario Red, and Saskatchewan. When we beat Ontario Red, it was probably the best feeling in the world, just because nobody really beats Ontario Red, Lecavalier said, who plays for the Highwood Raiders in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League. Theyre all Team Canada girls. Ontario Red eventually captured gold against Ontario Blue by a score of 8-1 on Nov. 10. Ontario teams (Blue and Red) have won gold every year since the tournament began in 2001. I think I did my best, Lecavalier said; she netted one shorthanded goal in the tournament. As an underage, I didnt get as much ice time as I would have liked. I think I did what I could do in that time. Team Albertas only loss in the tournament was to Ontario Blue in the seminals on Nov. 9. Alberta, falling behind, made it 2-1 in the third, however, Blue scored 45 seconds later to nish the game at 3-1. It was good, obviously we werent as good as we wanted to be. Its tough with a long tournament like that. You really have to push yourself to the limit. Everyone was tired so that was a big factor, Lecavalier said. In the bronze game, Alberta initially had a 2-1 lead after the rst period, but Quebec stormed back to take a 3-2 lead in the second. After regulation, with the game tied, Albertas Amy Boucher scored three minutes into overtime on the power play; the team was 4/10 with the man advantage, while Quebec could not capitalize on eight attempts. Quebec was big, Lecavalier said. They were tall, they were strong. Getting me off the puck was a bit easier for them than I would say, my league right now. I just have to learn that you have to put your body in when you drive the net you have to be a lot quicker on your decisions. From Feb. 6-9 in 2014 the U18 team will be regrouping for the Alberta Winter Games in Banff and Canmore. I denitely look forward to it next year, Lecavalier said.

Chiefs almost knocked

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Up 3-0 by the end of the second, the midget AA Wheatland Chiefs thought they had the game in the bag against the Red Deer Indy Graphics in Hussar on Nov. 15, a team theyve been chasing in the standings. However, in the third, Red Deer came as close as 3-2; Chiefs goalie Mike Conrad saved 26 shots for the close win. Though multiple penalties were called, the Chiefs only managed one powerplay marker. Were working on it, Wheatland Coach Devin Olson said. The big thing was that we didnt have much powerplay time. There were a lot of penalties, but as soon as we got a powerplay, we were taking a penalty. Olson said the Chiefs would only have 20 to 30 seconds of an actual man advantage, before getting a penalty of their own. Blair Roszell ended the game with 14 minutes, including a game misconduct. He got a 10 minute in the third, Olson said. Everyone kind of got aggravated. The ref called a few on us that were just kind of questionable calls stuff that hed let go of the whole game and then the third period. Luckily, one of the Chiefs strong suits is their defensive play when down a player in the box. Our penalty kill has been really good all year which is good in a way, but we shouldnt be taking that many penalties, Olson said. Our strong work ethic is the biggest thing. We had a few games about a month ago where we didnt show up, and didnt play hard, and didnt win. Weve kind of got everyone back on track now, and the last few games have been very good. Cody Willis and Coltyn Herman are top 20 in scoring, having played close to half as many games as the rest of the league both added a point against Red Deer. When they show up and work hard, they put up a lot of points for us. Theyre kind of our go-to guys, Olson said. We expected that, because they both had good years last season for us. The Wheatland Chiefs are 7-1-1, and third in the division, but have only played nine games in comparison to most teams who have played 15 or 16. The bantam Warriors red 53 shots against the Bow Valley Timberwolves on Nov. 15 at home, and won by a score of 8-4; Lucas Muenchrath and Joel Krahenbil had three points each, while Kyle Merkosky added two assists. Merkosky is now fth in league scoring, with 30 points in 15 games. The Warriors are 14-1, and lead the league with 28 points. They face off against the Sylvan Lake Lakers on Nov. 22.

Spartans veterans to lead

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Last season, the Strathmore High School Spartans nished seventh while hosting girls basketball provincials. However, with one of the toughest zones in the province, coach Dion Galandy and the seven returning players have their work cut out for them. To get out of our zone, means youre a provincial caliber team. There are provincial caliber teams in our zone that dont make it to provincials because our zone is so tough, Galandy said. Zones (last year) we didnt do so well, we lost our second game, and then lost our third game. We were kind of out of it. Were hoping to be a provincial caliber team this year. Three Grade 12s and four Grade 11s are the squads veterans, while three Grade 10s round out the 10-woman roster. Weve got some good players that are returning, Galandy said. We were second in the league last year, and lost in the semi nals. With all of our returning players, were maybe projected to be one of the top teams. Galandy mentioned starting with the basics will be key for their rst exhibition tournament on Nov. 28 at SAIT. Well focus on fundamentals to begin with, he said. Its always the fundamentals that make a difference. Well work on our team stuff but shooting, dribbling, and passing are key to winning. The Spartans rst season game is against Holy Trinity Academy at home on Dec. 11. Itll be a good contest to gauge where we are, Galandy said.

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter After beating Canmore, Cochrane, Bow Valley, and Brooks in pool play, the Strathmore High School (SHS) Spartans boys volleyball team nished at the top of their pool while hosting zones from Nov. 15-16. Their 4-0 record allowed them to have a bye into the semi-nals against George McDugall. McDugalls quarter nal, however, was a rematch of their league nal after their win, McDugalls emotions ran high and conquered Strathmores power from the crowd. SHS fell 25-15, 25-23 in the semis. They had a pretty intense, emotional game in the quarters, said Spartans Coach Brandie Dundas of her competitor, who went on to lose to Holy Trinity Academy in the nals. They were pretty amped up. Strathmore received their amp from their pool game against Canmore on Nov. 15; after losing the rst set 25-19, the Spartans came back to win 27-25, and 15-11. Ive never heard our stands so loud, Dundas said. Such an amazing game, I think the boys just felt the energy of the crowd and really used it to their advantage. They played so well. That Canmore team is well rounded; they have a strong setter, middle, power. Its really hard to defend against that. The boys just kind of stepped up and did their job. For the bronze medal on Nov. 16, Strathmore once again had to play Canmore, but took the win in straight sets: 25-16, 25-23. The second game, we just let Grade 12s play. Those six boys have come up through Grade 10, 11, and 12 together, Dundas said. They all got to go out on the win, one of them got a huge block for the nal point. It was just kind of a celebration this is the end of our career, and we did it together. It was really cool. Last season ended with the Spartans going winless at zones; Dundas was extremely pleased with 2013s nish the original goal was to place at zones in their home gym. For us to go undefeated in pool play, thats a huge improvement from last year, Dundas said. To be able to bounce back from a loss in semis, and win bronze, that shows huge mental strength. leyball squad traveled to Cochrane for their zones on Nov. 15-16, and lost to George McDugall as well, but in the quarter nals. McDugall went on to win bronze. In pool play, SHS rst lost to Springbank, but won against High River, and Brooks the latter being one of their biggest challenges. We ended up beating them, we played just great volleyball, girls coach Randy Moncks said. We worked as a team it was just a good battle. Our mistakes were really, really few, and it was a lot of fun. Next, feeling good over the Brooks win, the Spartans rolled through Bow Valley in two straight sets, nishing second in their pool. In the quarters, against McDugall who nished third in their own pool, Strathmore took the rst set, but dropped the second. We made a few mistakes in the second set, Moncks said. They really played well and dominated, and controlled our power hitters quite a bit did a really good job blocking and caused us a lot of problems. Up 11-6 in the third set, SHS lost the mind game, and fell 15-13. We just started making a few more mistakes again, Moncks said. We panicked a little bit. All of a sudden it just started rolling back on us, and we couldnt stop it. We made some unforced errors right at the end silly mistakes. Moncks said winning the tournament could have been possible, but the girls would have to work very, very hard. We struggled a little bit with consistency, he said. We had played so well on Saturday. All of a sudden we all sort of clicked together, and beating Brooks, they were so high. For next season, Moncks will be losing four players, including star Erika Myhre. She worked really well for me this year, she worked really hard, Moncks said. She really matured I thought at the end, especially in the second half of the season, and tried to build some kind of a system to attack. Were going to miss her for sure. Moncks also credited his rookies, especially Sybil Bain and Taylor Stewart, who have come far in their play this season. Seven players are expected to return to the squad next season. We have to do a lot of work for sure next year, Moncks said. It would have been nice to go just one step further.

Strathmore boys earn Prospect Cup silver

ARYssAH StANKEVItscH Times Reporter Five Strathmore hockey boys aided the Rockyview Raiders to their second Prospect Cup nal in over 10 years, at the Chestermere Recreation Centre from Nov. 14-17. Forwards Alec Biletsky, Chris Rebeyka, and Kody Hammond, along with defensemen Brad Hendricks and Liam Rycroft, earned silver, after falling to Sherwood Park 3-2. Raiders coach Doug Thurston believed penalties were the main reason the Raiders fell; the team had 26 minutes in penalties, twice as many as Sherwood Park. You got 40 minutes in penalties in a game; it was all special teams. It really determined the outcome in my mind. There were maybe half a dozen really soft calls. It was pretty frustrating, Thurston said. Thats the way the game went, its a learning curve for the boys. As for the Strathmore players, Thurston was pleased with their on-ice performance. Hendricks and Biletsky bring a lot of size to the team, at 64 and 61. They all played very well to be honest with you, he said. (Saturday) was a must-win situation and we needed to score some goals to even have a mathematical chance. All the things fell into place for us there. Having lost two of their round robin games, the Raiders won two straight on Nov. 16 against two of the toughest teams in their Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League to advance to the playoffs. They then played the seminals the following morning, later falling to Sherwood Park that evening. The Raiders have their next major tournament at The Edge School from Dec. 27-30.

Pranava Yoga studio celebrates 1st birthday

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Pranava Yoga studio is celebrating its rst birthday this week, and they want the community to come join in the celebrations. We wanted to celebrate it and the best way that we decided to celebrate it was to give back to our existing clients, the people who have supported us so beautifully this year, but as well to the community of Strathmore, said owner Becky Stone. The studio is hosting sales all week, and door prizes that are drawn daily for anyone who comes through the doors. On Saturday, Nov. 23 at noon there will be a big, free family yoga class. We ask that people register by giving us a call or emailing us. Space is limited but we have lots of room still, said Stone. There will be cake, giveaways and goodie bags after. From 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. there will also be a birthday bazaar. There will be imported yoga clothes and accessories and specialty soaps. It will be cash only for the bazaar. Its really a good time and a great place to get started on holiday shopping for yourself, said Stone. On Sunday, Nov. 24 there will be another free Intro to Yoga class at 10:30 a.m. For anybody who is brand new to yoga this is a class for you. Silhouettes hoping to expand

TARA SMItH Strathmore Silhouettes Strathmore Silhouettes competitive gymnastics is holding precompetitive team tryouts with the hopes of expanding its team. With some of the older girls from the competitive team moving on to other endeavors, it is the perfect time to rebuild the precompetitive program for younger athletes. The tryouts are open for girls ages 4-8 who show that extra spark that competitive gymnastics requires. Previous gymnastics experience is helpful but not totally necessary. Some qualities that we will be looking for during our tryouts are natural strength and exibility, power, body type and awareness, attitude, ability to stay focused, fear factor, etc. Competitive gymnastics can offer many positives to your child. It can offer a way to build character and self condence, the opportunity to train for an individual sport in a supportive team setting, the opportunity to build strong work ethic and self-discipline, and of course tness; increased endurance, strength, exibility, etc. Competitive gymnastics is not for everyone, but it may be for your child! (For ages 9 and over, please contact me for more information about the competitive team) The tryouts will be held on Sunday, Dec. 1 from 12:30-2 at Jumphouse Gymnastics. For sign-up or more information please contact Tara Smith @ strathcoach@hotmail.com or 403-934-0348.

Obituaries
TRACH, Leona
It is with profound love and joy for the life of Leona Trach; wife, mom, grandma, greatgrandma, sister, aunt, friend, boss, and mentor, that we mourn her passing. She was born Leona Mary Kuziw on November 30, 1938 at Elk Point, AB and passed away from cancer with loved ones at her side on November 14, 2013 at Strathmore Hospital at the age of 74 years. Leona was the eldest of three children born to Morris and Agnes Kuziw, along with brother Bob, and sister Theresa (Versluys). Her father, Morris, ran a John Deere Dealership in Heinsburg, AB and her mother, Agnes, taught school at Frog Lake Reservation. They later homesteaded on a farm where Leonas grandparents lived, ve miles southwest of Heinsburg. In addition to attending Ellsworth School one mile away, and getting into mischief with her brother, Leona became the farm cook early, at twelve years of age, during her moms brief illness. She continued to hone this skill her whole life with delicious results. In fact, Leona met her husband Peter when Morriss truck got stuck on the roadside. Leona showed her appreciation with homemade cookies, which Peter thoroughly enjoyed; enough to marry her in 1957. What a Blessing it was to celebrate their 56th Anniversary this year. Time was kind to Peter and Leona with steady work for each of them on the CPR, where Leona was a boxcar cook. Their love also brought four children: Shannon Lee in 1957, Linda Marie in 1960, Keith Anthony in 1963, and Tammy Lynn in 1966. Peter and Leona operated and owned hotels in Champion, Beiseker, Standard, Milk River, and Medicine Hat. Leona had impeccable taste, especially when it came to fashion or her family and friends. She shared her well-timed sense of humour, liked things neat and tidy, and always welcomed company with a beverage or a meal. It seemed only natural that the cooking channel was her rst priority, next to Heartland, and books by Danielle Steele. Family dinners and community or street dances, snowmobile rallies, crochet, swimming, and card games of Rummoli, Canasta, and especially Bridge tested her superb wit. Peter and Leona traveled extensively; within the U.S.A. and North America to Arizona and Mexico, managing to lose her glasses the rst time in Hawaii, and hoping to nd them there on each of ten subsequent visits. They also cruised the Caribbean from St. Thomas to St. Martinique to Aruba, and nally the Panama Canal; in addition to Cuba, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Dominican Republic twice. Leona also discovered her familys homeland of Ukraine in Europe. Still, she always loved the summers spent yearly in Fairmont, or trips to visit family in Albertas North. Success continued into Leona and Peters retirement, with abundant friendships in and around the Kelowna and Strathmore areas as well as most points in between the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. The dignity, care and kindness that Leona received from the phenomenal staff at the Strathmore Hospital Palliative Care Unit is lifes greatest gift. Leona has woven pink and yellow ribbons of Hope and Dignity into the lives of those she leaves behind: her husband Peter, her four children: Shannon (Doug) Savard, Linda Jensen, Keith Trach, Tammy Abernethy; nine grandchildren: Jeremy (Elyse) Jensen, Lindsay (Kyle) Anderson, Alissa Jensen, Kristen Jensen, Chelsey (Travis) Chevrier, Lyndon Trach, Justin (Brittany) Abernethy, Kyle Trach, and Garrett Jensen; seven great-grandchildren: Jayden Jensen, Nicholas Jensen, Carter Jensen, Porter Anderson, Kinley Jensen, Alexis Jensen, and Bowie Anderson; numerous nieces and nephews, extended family, and a host of friends. Leonas funeral service will take place on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Hope Community Church, Strathmore, AB at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of owers donations can be made to Strathmore District Health Services Palliative Care Unit, 200 Brent Blvd Strathmore, AB T1P 1J9.
