Hudson River School Art

A collection of old and modern paintings

by
Lawrence Zeitlin
The Hudson River School

Landscape painting occupied a relatively minor place in the roster

of European arts during the 18th century. This was changed, at
least in the United States, by the emergence of the Hudson River
School, America's first homegrown, coherent and sizable group of
landscape artists. The new country had few historical scenes or
eminent personages to depict but it had an abundance of beautiful,
dramatic and untamed scenery. The painters of the Hudson River
School, working in and around New York from the 1820s to the
1880s outstripped other contemporary art movements in portraits,
still life, genre, and history painting. The paintings depicted the
landscape in an almost idealistic fashion. They became so popular
that the average art viewer envisions Hudson River type
landscapes as characteristic of American art for the entire period of
the 1800s. The landscape artists did not restrict themselves to the
Hudson River. In later years they painted the landscapes of the
West and classic scenes of Europe. But eventually tastes change.
Photography could do the primary job of documentation, and the
style itself became viewed as overly romantic and "old fashioned."
The Impressionists were on the rise.

In recent years the school has seen a revival as contemporary

artists revisit the old sites and paint their Hudson landscapes with a
freer hand and much more colorful palette. We congratulate both
the landscape pioneers who worked in New York studios, and their
contemporary peers who paint on the banks of the river, for their
sympathetic presentation of a simpler world. Their vision is one
that will not pass away.
