Reaction Prediction and Observations

For the following reactions, in your lab notebook

U n i t

3 : T y p e s

o f

R e a c t i o n s

a) Predict the products of the reaction and balance the

equation.
b) Describe the observations you would make while the
reaction proceeded.
c) Determine the type of reaction. If it is a redox reaction,
determine what is oxidized and reduced.
Eg) solid copper is added to silver nitrate solution
Equation: Cu(s) + 2AgNO3 2Ag + Cu(NO3)2 (aq)
BEFORE: copper is a brownish shiny metal, silver nitrate is colorless and clear solution
AFTER: copper appears to disappear; crystals of shiny silver metal appear; the solution
color turns to blue/green (due to the presence of Cu 2+ ions)
TYPE: Single Replacement/ Redox Cu is oxidized and Ag + is reduced; 2 electrons were
transferred.
1. A solution of copper (II) chloride is electrolyzed.
Observe the two electrodes.
Equation: ___CuCl2 (l) ---> Cu (s) + Cl2 (g)
______
Before:
___Clear, blue colored solution, bubbling when electrolyzing
began________________________
After:
____One test tube displayed more bubbles, red precipitate forming from
copper____________
Type:
___Decomposition
_Cu in CuCl2_)

__ (If applicable: oxidized?_Cl in CuCl2_ reduced?

2. Zinc metal and iodine solid are mixed and react in the presence of water (water is not a
reactant)
Teacher demo

Equation: ____Zn (s) + I2 (s) ---> ZnI2

(aq)_______________________________________________________
Before:
___Zinc powder was thing and dull grey, Iodine was small grey pellets
______________________
After:
____Yellow tinted liquid with residue of some powder and pellets

Type:
__Synthesis
reduced? __I_ ___)

_______ (If applicable: oxidized?_Zn__

3. Zinc iodide solution is electrolyzed.

In a petri dish, dissolve a small amount of zinc iodide in 20 mL distilled water.
Electrolyze the solution with the cork with 2 pins and the battery. After observing, add in
3 drops of starch solution.
Equation: __ZnI2 (aq) ---> Zn (g) + I2 (g)
________________________________
Before:
_Yellow tinted liquid with powder and pellet
residue_____________________________________
After:
___Precipitate began to form as electrolyzation began
______________________________________
Type:
___Decomposition______ (If applicable: oxidized?_I in ZnI2__ reduced? __Zn in
ZnI2____)

4. Sodium metal is added to water.

Teacher Demonstration
Equation: __2Na (s) + 2H2O (l) ---> 2NaOH (aq) + H2 (g)
________

Before:
__Silver metal piece added to
water_________________________________________________
After:
_A metal hydroxide was formed along with hydrogen gas

Type:
H2O____)

__Single Replacement_______ (If applicable: oxidized?_Na_ reduced? __H in

Test for Gases

For each of the following test, make additional observations of what provides a positive test
for the gas produced.
5. Magnesium metal is added to hydrochloric acid.
Sand a piece of magnesium metal. In a medium size test tube, add 2 cm of hydrochloric
acid and the magnesium metal. Use your finger to close the top of the test tube while
your partner lights a wooden splint. Quickly place the burning splint into the test tube
without touching the liquid.
Equation: _____Mg (s) + 2HCl (aq) ---> MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)
_______________________________________
Before:
____ Silver magnesium strip in test tube with a clear colored
acid_______________________
After:
______White murky liquid residue in test tube

Type:
in HCl_)

__Single Replacement

_______ (If applicable: oxidized?_Mg_ reduced? _H

Test for Hydrogen gas __Lighter held above compressed test tube, when released, a "pop"
sound was heard__
Combustion reaction for hydrogen gas: __2H2 (g) + O2 (g) ---> 2H2O (l)
__________________________

6. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) decomposes.

Add some drops of potassium iodide solution to about 2cm deep hydrogen peroxide in a
test tube .
Equation: __H2O2 (l) ---> H2 (g) + O2 (g)
____________________________________________________
Before:
__A clear transparent solution

_______ (If applicable: oxidized?_H in H2O2_ reduced?

Test for oxygen gas ___Light a match near the gas to see if a bright flame
emerges____________________

7. Solid copper (II) carbonate is heated and one of the resulting products is bubbled
through limewater.
