Position Description: The Estrada Fellowship is a recruitment and training program for youth with the desire of becoming leaders of social justice movements. The Estrada Fellowship is a 5-month service, leadership development, and organizing program for youth ages 16-24 in Metro-Detroit and Metro-Kalamazoo. Fellows will work as a team to conduct extensive outreach in the community for voters, for community members interested in advancing campaigns, and for Naturalized Citizenship applicants. Fellows will engage, educate, and recruit by layering civic engagement and issue campaigns. In order to help Fellows perform their duties, they will participate in an intensive training program to learn the history and challenges of voting and social justice movements, learn how to craft a public narrative, and analyze the power structures at the local, state, and federal level. Fellowship graduates will be connected with other professional development opportunities, job opportunities, academic support, and join a growing alumni network started with the 2012 Democracy Fellows. This program is supported by the Cynthia Estrada Foundation.
Requirements and Expectations: Fellows must: Reside in Metro-Detroit or Metro-Kalamazoo Have previously completed community work Be effective working with a culturally, religiously, and economically diverse group of partners, members, and staff Be responsible, timely, and committed to professionalism and community Be an effective communicator, with desire to improve at public speaking Have transportation support Fellows will be responsible for: Going door-to-door or phone banking to brief community members on voting information Registering voters and supporting them through the democratic election process Participating in coalitions to support voter engagement Identifying and providing action steps to community members who support the Campaigns for Comprehensive Immigration Reform and Raising the Minimum Wage Identifying potential DACA & Naturalized Citizenship Applicants Assisting facilitation of Naturalized Citizenship Informational Workshops Using online data systems (VAN & SALSA) to track contact and communicate with community members Participating in weekly professional development opportunities Completing regular reports and documenting activities in the community
Hours, Compensation, and Directions to Apply: Fellows will work approximately 15-20 hours per week. Applicant must have availability on evenings and weekends. Fellow will receive a total award of $2,500 to support their learning and expenses during the period of the fellowship. It is possible to award monthly rate directly to a school as a scholarship for current college students.
