Attach the lesson plan. Math: Show me group procedures. Mr. Hovermale asks about specific things (body parts) and what they are supposed to be doing during this time. Some of you have been working on counting and some of you might call this addition. Mr. Hovermale shows colored chips ( red! " yellow) and discusses number sentences. #ne student calls upon Students get split into groups ($st and %) %indergarten Mystery &ags' Mr. Hovermale shares one bag (&ag () and has students predict what they think might be in the bag. )ou have seen this before. *hat does this look like+ Have you ever seen this+ Student says to make two lines. She demonstrates how to do it. Mr. Hovermale e,plains how to record this on a $- frame and to write the total on the top. Students are split into pairs and head to seats. Mr. Hovermale remembers to share that they should only do one bag at a time. ../re you able to give all of the directions prior to them working or are they supposed to figure it out along the way+ ..0t may have been helpful to have them write the &ag /! etc on the top of their ten frame before counting. ..1 bags may have been too much to control with kindergarteners. *hat if you rotated a total of 1 bags between each group+ Students work on their counting and coloring ten frames. ..Some students began putting all of the blocks together and building spinners instead of filling out their ten frames. $st 2rade 3en 4rames with 5hips' Students get $- chips and are to shake them up and drop them on their $- frame and then color in a smaller $- frame with how their chips fall. Several students are changing their colors to make patterns instead of looking at how different numbers make $-. $st graders! 0 need you to show everyone what our group procedures are because we have a lot of deep mathematical thinking and sharing to do6 ..How do you follow through with this re7uest+ *hat strategies are in place or are you using in order to have a safe! productive learning environment+ Mr. Hovermale leads students in a stomping and clapping chant. 2reat engagement6 / student is called forward from the %indergarten group to demonstrate how she made ten using the mystery bags. Mr. Hovermale models on the board how students8 thinking occurred. *e are going to e,plore all of the ways we can make $-. Student notices the pattern in the addends (9! 1! :! ;) and Mr. Hovermale honors his thinking! but asks him to remember it for later. <uring construction time today we are going to construct all of the ways we can make $-. ..Management 7uestions=how free are they supposed to be+ 0s it okay to be a little firmer in getting their attention++

Mr. Hovermale reflects deeply! with wonderful insight and honesty. ..Mr. Hovermale is very passionate about teaching! students and building strong! independent learners. 0t is evident that he is facing some imbalance in e,pectations and what his learning needs are. *e discussed the need for further conversation on this topic and will set up a date to continue. ../s a teacher!
