Interview with Julia Proctor on Experiential Learning Opportunities

Summary of interview: Currently, Julia would like to major in biology with a concentration on molecular, cellular, and development. But she is also thinking about majoring in applied and computational mathematical sciences. Her focus of interest is the field of genetics. She is currently researching in the genome sciences department. However, she is still not sure about her future career because she would be fine with anything genetics related. She has been trying to shadow different jobs to find out which job is right for her. Julia plays oboe, likes volunteering, kayaking, and other outdoor activities, and likes traveling as well. On study abroad, she would be fine with going anywhere, such as Oceania or Europe, but even places like Iceland and Africa, as long as it is just during summer quarters and in a program that speaks English. Ideas and advice: Julia is already involved in research; I highly encourage her to continue working on research with her present research group, as you gain the most knowledge in research by staying in the same lab. However, she did express an interest in studying abroad. If doing research, the only time you can really take a break is during summer quarter. So, it does indeed make sense to go on a study abroad during summer. International Programs and Exchanges at UW has many opportunities for students to go on a study abroad trip, even for students like Julia who have an interest in hard laboratory-based science, such as genetics. For example, the foreign exchange program to Kings College in London provide a summer to take a variety of classes from all different fields, including science, while having a cultural experience. A more focused choice would be the Honors England trip to Oxford, around the topic of Debates of Science and the Humanities, exploring the interdisciplinary connection between the two. Julia can also get co-op experience while studying abroad by applying to the IE3 Global Internships, either at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama or the Molecular and Cellular Biology Research at Charles University in Czech Republic.
