Piling Engineering
Keith Elson, Consulting Engineer, UK, Ken Fleming, Mark Randolph, University of Western Australia, Australia and Austin Weltman, CL Associates, UK The third edition of this well established book has been comprehensively updated to cover major recent advances in theory, methods, testing procedures and equipment. Retaining the framework of previous editions, it provides a readable and wellillustrated account of design techniques, methods of testing and analysis of piles, with a marked emphasis on practice. Piling Engineering is written for geotechnical engineers, consultants and foundation contractors. It will also be a useful reference for academics and advanced students on courses in piling, practical site investigation, and foundation design and construction.

Debris Flow
Mechanics, Prediction and Countermeasures
Tamotsu Takahashi, Kyoto University, Japan This is a comprehensive account of debris flow, describing both theoretical and applied aspects. In the first part, the fundamental mechanical characteristics are discussed, including flow characteristics, type classification, mechanics, occurrence and development, fully developed flow, and deposition processes. The second part sheds light on the application of the theories presented in computer-simulated reproductions of real disasters. Special attention is paid to debris flow controlling structures, design effectiveness and performance, soft countermeasure problems, such as the identification of debris flow prone ravines and the prediction of occurrence by means of precipitation threshold. The qualitative and fundamental character of this text makes it excellent reading for professionals in engineering, geosciences and water resources who are working on the mechanics and countermeasures of debris flow.

Geotechnical Modelling
David Muir Wood Modelling forms an implicit part of all engineering design but many engineers engage in modelling without consciously considering the nature, validity and consequences of the supporting assumptions. Derived from courses given to postgraduate and final year undergraduate MEng students, this book presents some of the models that form a part of the typical undergraduate geotechnical curriculum and describes some of the aspects of soil behaviour which contribute to the challenge of geotechnical modelling. Assuming a familiarity with basic soil mechanics and traditional methods of geotechnical design, this book is a valuable tool for students of geotechnical, structural and civil engineering as well as being useful to practising engineers involved in the specification of numerical or physical geotechnical modelling.

Soil Liquefaction
A Critical State Approach
Mike Jefferies and Ken Been, both at Golder Associates (UK) Ltd., UK Soil liquefaction is a major concern in areas of the world subject to seismic activity or other repeated vibration loads. This book brings together a large body of information on the topic, and presents it within a unified and simple framework. The result is a book which will provide the practising civil engineer with a very sound understanding of soil liquefaction.
Selected Contents: 1. Introduction 2. Dilitancy and the State Parameter 3. Constitutive Modelling for Liquefaction 4. Measuring State Parameter in situ 5. Soil Variability and Characteristic States 6. Static Liquefaction and Post Liquefaction Strength 7. Cyclic Stress Induced Liquefaction 8. Concluding Remarks. References. Appendix A: Stress and Strain Measures Appendix B: Laboratory Testing to Determine the Critical State of Sands Appendix C: The Critical Friction Ratio M Appendix D: Norsand Derivations Appendix E: Calibration Chamber Test Data Appendix F: Some Case Histories Involving Flow Liquefaction
