ASSIGNMENT IN PHILIPPINE LITERATURE

Jennevie Lyka C. Del Mundo BSC 2-1

Literature
(from Latin litterae (plural); letter) is the art of written work. The word literature literally means: "things made from letters". Literature is commonly classified as having two major formsfiction and non-fictionand two major techniquespoetry and prose. Literature may consist of texts based on factual information (journalistic or non-fiction), a category that may also include polemical works, biography, and reflective essays, or it may consist of texts based on imagination (such as fiction, poetry, or drama). Literature written in poetry emphasizes the aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of languagesuch as sound, symbolism, and metreto evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, ordinary meanings, while literature written in prose applies ordinary grammatical structure and the natural flow of speech. Literature can also be classified according to historical periods, genres, and political influences. While the concept of genre has broadened over the centuries, in general, a genre consists of artistic works that fall within a certain central theme; examples of genre include romance, mystery, crime, fantasy, erotica, and adventure, among others.

Prose & Poetry, or Prose-Poetry

(sometimes Original Prose & Poetry), is a competitive speech event practiced by state high-school forensics or debating associations such as the Ohio High School Speech League and the California High School Speech Association, but not by the National Forensic League (NFL). The NFL does have consolation events in Prose Interpretation and Poetry Interpretation at the National Tournament, but these are only open to competitors who qualified in other events and were eliminated before the late elimination rounds. Competitors in Prose & Poetry (short form: P-P) read an unmemorized cut of prose or poetry, which is typically read from a small black binder. A short memorized introduction precedes the prose or poetry reading. The time limit for these events is typically seven minutes, occasionally with a 30 second grace period, though in some areas the time limit is ten minutes. Competition rules are the same as for NFL interpretation events.

Why do I read literature?

Literature represents a language or people: culture and tradition. But, literature is more important than just a historical or cultural tool. Literature introduces me to the new worlds of experience. I learn about books and literature; I enjoy the comedies and the tragedies of poems, stories, and plays; and I may even grow and evolve through my literary journey with books. We may discover meaning in literature by looking at what the author says and how he says it. We may interpret the author's message. In academic circles, this decoding of the text is often carried out through the use of literary theory, using a mythological, sociological,

psychological, historical, or other approach. Whatever critical example we use to discuss and analyze literature, there is still an artistic quality to the works. Literature is important to us because it speaks to us, it is universal, and it affects us. Even when it is boring, literature is beautiful. It will make us more fluent and intelligent in terms of communicating and socializing to others.
