Grammar Points
Today's lesson covers counting numbers eleven through twenty. Counting from eleven
through nineteen is achieved by simply following the Japanese word for ten, j ,
with a Japanese number one through nine. For example, to get the number eleven, j
ichi, simply follow the Japanese word for ten, j , with the Japanese word for one,
ichi. When counting tens, the number for the number of tens precedes ten. In the
case of twenty, the Japanese word for two, ni, precedes the Japanese word for ten,
j , resulting in ni j . Please note that the Japanese counting system uses

counters, words or syllables placed after a number. Counters are determined by the
object being counted, and these will be examined further in later lessons.
