The legend below, together with the play descriptions should remove any confusion about the diagrams. Also, I recommend reading The Ultimate Strategy Guide while learning these plays. It can be very helpful. LEGEND 1. A jagged line at the beginning of the route means block and then release. Usually this is for one or two counts. 2. A route with no arrow means stop. 3. A route with an arrow means continue in that direction 4. This symbol means block. Hold it for as long as you can. 5. A dashed line coming from the QB is a pitch or shuffle pass. 6. A dashed line like this from a receiver indicates pre-snap motion.

Backside Screen
20
twin tight
10
zone
Backside Screen lures the defense off to the right side, then the QB turns and tosses it back to the left blocker. The QB should keep his eyes on one of the two right receivers until he is ready to make the pass. This will draw the defense to the right side of the field, and open up a running lane for the ball carrier.

Banana Split

fake dive
man
Banana Split relies on a fake dive to the right, but more importantly, on a good banana pattern. The banana route is as follows: both receivers line up tight (literally shoulder-toshoulder). The inside receiver starts a step or two back from the outside receiver. Both run a similar arc, but just as they are rounding off, the inside man cuts hard to the outside. The play should be wide open.

Bottle Rocket Under is a read on the deep right defender. Throw to whichever twins receiver he does not cover. If he tries to split the gap between the two, throw to the inside man. If the middle defender drops back to help, throw to the Center on a hitch.

Center Delay R
20
twins
10
zone
Center delay simply creates a hole for the Center after a block. The Center MUST hold his block for 2 counts to clear out the defenders. Then the QB should hit him as he releases. If the middle defender jumps the Centers route, hit the left receiver on the slant fly.

Single Back
10
zone
If your guys hold their blocks, this can be a very effective play. Everyone except the left blocker should move first to the right. The left blocker should start a little wider to encourage his rusher to go inside, and then pin him in as the runner goes around them.

Cut Cross
20
twin tight
10
man
Cut Cross works great against a man defense. The QBs primary look is at the left wideout. He should cut back on a hitch as the inside left twins receiver runs a flag pattern over top. If that is covered, look to the Center on the slant fly up the middle.

Single Back
10
zone
Simple end around pas. Right wideout goes in motion before the snap. The QB hands him the ball, and he looks for the open man. Look first deep to the left wideout, then to the crossing routes.

Dive
20
twin back
10
zone
This is a simple dive running play. Use it for very short yardage, and to set up the play action pass. The blocking assignments are labeled above. If the blocks are good enough this can go for big yardage. Look for the pitch.

HB GUT
20
twin back
10
zone
This is a simple run up the middle. Both blockers kick out, and the Center picks up the middle defender. Its good for 5-15 yards every time. If the rushers line up inside, audible to a different side or out of the play.

Hay Stack
20
twins
10
zone
Haystack should be one of your teams staple plays. It works best if each of the crossing patterns come within inches of the Center streaking up the field. After the cross, look to the inside right receiver . For added effect, have the Center yell Im Open! Im Open while flying down the field.

Mid - X
20
double tight
10
zone
The key to this play is the Cross in the middle of the field between the left receiver and the inside right twins receiver. They cross at different levels, the left receiver under and the right, over. This forces the middle defender to choose one or the other. Just hit whichever one he leaves open. If he splits both, hit the short route. If the deep right defender jumps the crossing route, hit the right wideout on a fade for a touchdown.

Moflat
20
twins
10
zone
Need a couple yards? Moflat is unstoppable for a short yard gain. Send the left inside receiver in motion. While in motion, he should run full speed. Snap the ball as he passes the right blocker. He will bow across the line and then head for the flat. The QB can roll out with him to deliver the ball on the mark.

Black Widow

trips
10
man
This play will tear apart a man defense. Either the quick slant or the out will be open, and if the QB can lock his eyes in on the quick slant route, he can probably deliver the ball deep to the flag pattern.

Single Back
10
zone
This is a great 10 yard play. You have to practice to get this one right, but we have never been let down in a game. It works like a charm. The left wideout should practice his timing, but what usually works is when he takes two steps outside and then slants back inside very shallow. The left blocker holds for an count and then releases. As soon as the receiver catches the ball, he pitches it right back to the blocker who wheels around the left side.

Out & Up
20
Trips
10
zone
This play is one of the most effective in the entire book. You will make more long completions using it than any other. There are two keys, (1) giving the QB enough time to make the long pass (2) the middle receivers route. The middle trips receiver should take two steps and then cut out. This has to happen fast to get the deep defender to ignore him for the play. At 1-3 yards from the sideline, the middle receiver should cut up field and turn on the jets. The QB should keep his eyes on the far right receiver until hes ready to throw.

fake
zone
PA Jet clears the field for a medium gain up the middle. The three streak routes clear the deep defenders, and the QB should have an easy connection with the halfback. But if any of the deep defenders bite on the fake, go long with the ball.

Post Curl

Against a tough man defense, the post curl is an excellent weapon. The QB rolls out right and hits the right inside receiver as soon as he stops and curls.

PA Under
20
twin back

PA Under will get you some great yards. Fake the dive left, then boot back around to the right. With three guys deep you should be able to blow open the zone. If its not there, hit your halfback.

PA Wasp
20
twin back
10
zone
PA Wasp has a deadly stinger. QB rolls left, fakes the dive, and then looks for the right wideout on the deep post. The deep right defender should not be in position to make the play. If he is, hit the inside right receiver on a short drag or fake the run and pop it over to the halfback.

Hot Post
20
twin tight
10
zone
This play is a simple zone-buster, but it requires good timing. The inside Right receiver will sprint for the outside shoulder of the deep defender. The Right wideout is going to pass the flat defender and then cut in on a short post. As soon as he makes his cut, the QB should release the ball. If for some reason, the middle defender is all over the post, hit the left receiver on a hitch.

man/zone
Slant Fly Middle works best against a man defense, but can also be effective against a zone. The reason this pattern is so effective is that a defender (man or zone) has to change coverage to move laterally with the quick slant. As soon as the defender has adjusted, the receiver breaks deep. Look for six on this play.

Here, the middle defender is the read man. If he comes up to cover the in, hit the far right receiver on the long post. If he drops back, thread it underneath. The center release is a last option.

Quick Pick
20
twin back
10
motion
man
This is a quick play that works great against man defense. The right inside twin receiver goes in motion. As soon as he passes center, snap the ball. His defender will be running with him probably lagging just a little behind. This creates a shield for the back to use as he slips out into the flat. QB should fire quickly.

Quick Silver
20
double tight
10
zone
Quick Silver uses the roll out to draw attention to the right. The QB should further the effort by staring at one of the two right receivers. Then the QB fires it at the right blocker who has held his block for two counts and then released. If possible, the center should block the middle defender, but if he drifts right with the play, let him go. The QB can deliver the ball

WR Across
20
twins
10
100% 75%
zone
WR Across is a great play. But only if its run correctly. The right wideout is going to take two steps and then turn 90 degrees to the left, and run parallel to the line of scrimmage, 3-5 yards off. He should go 75% speed until he crosses the middle and then he should turn it on. A quick pass from the QB, and he is off to the races.
