Career Episode 1. a)Introduction. 1. In the first career episode I shall describe a position that I currently occupy.

I have been working at the State Design Institute " XXX" since March 19XX. It is situated in ! "ussia. I a# a civil engineer. I a# e#ployed as a $roup %eader. &he group under #y direction perfor#s water'supply syste#s design and draining syste#s design at industrial enterprises and residential buildings. b) Background. (. )s a group leader I a# responsible for design and construction of networks and works of water supply and sewerage of #etallurgical industry ob*ects. &hese ob*ects are either new ones under construction or those being rebuilt. &hey are situated in all parts of "ussia. +ouse' building capacity has increased substantially in the past years! and we fulfil orders for water' supply and sewerage syste#s for residential buildings. ,. I a# a leader of a group of engineers. &hey prepare work drawings on a )D syste# according to #y calculations and e-planations. I check the co#pleted drawings! #ake re#arks and correction on construction! co'ordinate the design aspects with ith theesponsible for designing "ussia................................................... engineers of other specialities who take part in the overall design of a facility. /. I analyse #istakes and inaccuracies #ade in the design. I also investigate their causes. )fter co#pletion of every design I conduct a session of critical analysis of the present work with all the group #e#bers. I point out the #ost interesting decisions that we can apply in other designs later on. 0. )ll the work according to the custo#ers1 re2uire#ents has to be done on a co#puter! so the knowledge of )D is necessary for #e. &he skill of working on a co#puter is necessary not only to check'up the work done by #y subordinates but to carry out the work fast and with high 2uality. &hat1s why I co#pleted the courses devoted to the following sub*ects3 "$raphical Media )uto )D" and "MS 4ffice 95 for 6indows". I also have good skills in "MS 7-cel". I have developed a nu#ber of spreadsheets for routine civil engineering calculations. "egularly I have a so'called " library day" when I attend a technical library at our institute or the technical depart#ent of the 8ublic %ibrary. &hus I constantly have an opportunity to beco#e fa#iliar with new special technical literature in a field of ivil 7ngineering. 9esides! I constantly enhance #y 7nglish language skills in order to be ac2uainted with the recent publications and get infor#ation about new engineering related to #y work activity. :. 6hen #y group receives an order for design of water'supply and drainage of an industrial ob*ect or a residential building I study the data received fro# the building'site! #ake calculations necessary for the correct engineering choice of the e2uip#ent and #aterials! co' ordinate taken decisions with the custo#er. I elaborate the design taking into consideration the cost! the service life and the re2uire#ents for the operation e-penses. &hen I prepare current and final support docu#entation. 5. I always have a schedule of #y work! because I have to work with several designs at the sa#e ti#e. In this situation #y schedule helps to prepare calculations and e-planations for #y subordinate group on ti#e. It helps to distribute orders to engineers of other specialities! prepare all the necessary supporting docu#entation and give the co#pleted design to a custo#er on ti#e.

c) Personal workplace activity. ;. My direct duties are as follows 3

)nalysing data to carry out a design! in2uiring about data fro# a custo#er if it1s necessary or travelling to a building'site to collect data. arrying out all the necessary calculations. Selecting e2uip#ent and #aterials and preparing specifications. 7laborating a design and fulfilling an e-planatory note with supple#entary water'supply and draining syste#s balances and sche#atic drawings.

9. 9elow I describe every part of #y work in detail. <irstly I analyse data carefully. It allows #e to define the following3

6ater'supply sources for do#estic! industrial and fire safety needs of the designed ob*ect. &he necessity of treat#ent of water for the consu#er needs and #ethods of water treat#ent. &he necessity of the purification of sewerage water and #ethods of purification. &he necessity to install additional water or sewerage pu#ping stations.

1=. &he ne-t stage of #y work is to carry out all the necessary calculations as follows3

alculations of the water consu#ption for do#estic! industrial and fire safety purposes according to the water consu#ption standards. &he calculation of the capacity of reservoirs and other water storage tanks. &he hydraulic co#putations of internal and e-ternal water'supply syste#s for the appropriate and correct choice of pipe lines dia#eter. alculations of the pu#ps and pu#p stations for water'supply and sewerage syste#s. 7sti#ation of water'cooling towers in the return cooling water'supply syste#s for different e2uip#ent. alculation of heat losses in tanks and pipelines that in turn allows to reveal whether it is necessary to use heat insulation. 7sti#ation of the diluting capacity of a river > or another basin? in case of wastes discharge into the#. alculation of the concentration of the pollutants after treat#ent and other calculations.

11. )ccording to #y calculations I choose appropriate e2uip#ent and #aterials. <or #y selection I take into consideration the peculiarities of the building area of the designed ob*ect > seis#ic factors! per#afrost! unstable ground! etc?. I also take into account the location of the suppliers! in other words their pro-i#ity to the building'site of the designed ob*ect. I select the #ost convenient #ethod for installing and operating e2uip#ent. I also co#pare costs of e2uip#ent supplied by different fir#s. 1(. )fter selecting of the e2uip#ent I work out the specification to define the esti#ated cost of the design. &hen I put all the selected e2uip#ent into the data base on a co#puter! where I point out the e2uip#ent grade! its weight! its #anufacturer! the e2uip#ent cost. )fterward such base #akes it easier to select the e2uip#ent. &hen I work out the e-planatory note for #y custo#er! in which I describe all the taken decisions. &here are drawings with principal water supply and drainage sche#es! tables with esti#ated flows! graphics of work of " the pu#p'pu#p'line". During the design we pay great attention to ensure protection #easures for natural and other disasters according to the "ussian legislation. 6e also take care of environ#ental issues. )ll our decisions necessarily #eet the environ#ental standards.

1,. 6hen a design is ready! I give all the supporting docu#entation > an e-planatory note and drawings? to a custo#er for approval. If necessary! I e#ploy the author1s supervision to carry out all the decisions! taken in the design. 1/. I offer #y custo#er different ways of environ#ental protection! fire safety #easures. I esti#ate which e2uip#ent is to be reconstructed and which one should be replaced by the new e2uip#ent. &here is a tea# of engineers consisting of the institute staff. I a# a #e#ber of this tea#! working effectively and co#petently. 10. <ulfilling #y duties I usually work with the tea# of other specialists. Developing the design I work as a tea# #e#ber. I also work as a group leader at #y depart#ent. I carry out all the pri#ary design develop#ent. &hanks to #y professional activity I have achieved trust and respect a#ong #y colleagues. I a# known as an e-perienced specialist! always ready to consult for 2uestions which are in #y co#petence. I often consult with other engineers in the fields outside of #y co#petency. I co'operate with architects! electrical engineers! #ining engineers! #etallurgic specialists! co'ordinate the laying of the water and sewerage pipe' lines. I co'ordinate the way of fitting and the site of all the necessary e2uip#ent! such as pu#ps! reservoirs! fire cocks and different valves. I give tasks to relative specialists for designing foundations under pu#ps! tanks! attach#ents to pipe'lines! stairs! asse#bling areas for the e2uip#ent and valves service. I also co'operate with environ#ental engineers to #eet re2uire#ents of sewage discharge and treat#ent. d) Summary. 1:. Duties and tasks delegated to #e are very diverse. So I have to de#onstrate #y knowledge both in the engineering and non'engineering fields. I apply all the obtained knowledge and try to get the new infor#ation about latest techni2ues! e2uip#ent and #echanis#s. @sually #y personal role contributed to a pro*ect is to carry out a #ain >principle? part of a design. &o the present ti#e all the designs carried out by #e solved all the tasks successfully.
