1. Introduction

This chapter describes the METRON SpO2 Probe Analyzer features and specifications.

1.1 Features
The SpO2 Probe Analyzer provides simple accurate tests for all types
of SpO2 probes.
The analyzer tests photodiode response to red and infrared LEDs and
performs a continuity test of circuits. Red, infrared and photodiode
circuits are each tested.
There are two test types, one short test (1 sec) and one long glitch test
(30 sec). The short test provides a very quick indication of any faults
encountered, or not. The long test allows the user to manipulate the
probe and cable in an effort to isolate any intermittent shorts or open
circuits.
Test results are displayed via a 7-segment display with 9 different
messages.
The unit is powered by a 9V alkaline battery located in a compartment
that is accessed from the back of the unit. Connectors for Nellcor and
Ohmeda SpO2 probes are built into the unit. There is also an RS-232
connection used to update the operating software (firmware) in the
SpO2 Probe Analyzer, and may potentially be used to operate the
analyzer via a PC.
For probe types other than Ohmeda and Nellcor an additional adapter
must be used. Several such adapters are available from Metron.

1.2 Tests Performed

The test results as shown in the 7-segment display:
0 = Probe OK
1 = IR LED open circuit
2 = red LED open circuit
3 = photo-diode open circuit
4 = IR LED shorted
5 = red LED shorted
6 = photo diode shorted
7 = shield error
8 = red/IR response error

9 = undefined error

2. Installation

This chapter explains unpacking, receipt inspection and claims, and the general procedures for SpO2
Probe Analyzer setup.

2.1 Receipt, Inspection

and Return
1. Inspect the outer box for damage.
2. Carefully unpack all items from the box and check to see that you
have the following items:
• SPO2 Probe Analyzer
• 9 V Battery

3. If you note physical damage, or if the unit fails to function

according to specification, inform the supplier immediately. When
METRON or the company’s Sales Agent, is informed, measures
will be taken to either repair the unit or dispatch a replacement.
The customer will not have to wait for a claim to be investigated
by the Sales Agent. The customer should place a new purchase
order to ensure delivery.
4. When returning an instrument to METRON, or the Sales Agent, fill
out the address label, describe what is wrong with the instrument,
and provide the model and serial numbers. If possible, use the
original packaging material for return shipping. Otherwise, repack
the unit using:
• a reinforced cardboard box, strong enough to carry the
weight of the unit.
• at least 5 cm of shock-absorbing material around the unit.
• nonabrasive dust-free material for the other parts.
Repack the unit in a manner to ensure that it cannot shift in the
box during shipment.
METRON’s product warranty is on page ii of this manual. The
warranty does not cover freight charges. C.O.D. will not be accepted
without authorization from METRON or its Sales Agent.

3. Operating SpO2 Probe Analyzer

This chapter describes the controls and terminals of the SpO2 Probe Analyzer. It also provides basic
instructions on operating the Analyzer.

3.1 Controls and Terminals

1. Power Switch This is the power switch for the unit. The LED will
illuminate when the unit is on and will blink when the
battery is low.
2. Test/abort button This button us used to encage and cancel tests.
3. Display The display is a 7-segment LED display that will display
the test result number.

5. Ohmeda Probe Inlet Connect your Ohmeda brand probes here

6. Battery Eliminator Connector for the 9-Volt battery eliminator
7. RS-232 Port This port is used for updating the firmware

3.2 Power
1. Power is provided by a single 9-volt battery or via am external 9-
volt battery eliminator. The battery is accessible by removing the
screw on the bottom panel.

3.3 Operating SpO2

Probe Analyzer
The operation of the SpO2 Probe Analyzer is fairly simple as it has
few controls.
1. Power on the unit.
2. Connect either a Nellcor or Ohmeda finger probe to the proper
port.
3. For the short test, make sure that the light source is lined up with
the photocell and press and release the “test” button. Then read
the result from the display.
4. For the long test, press and hold the “test” button for 1 second
and release. Then wiggle the cable and finger probe as the
SPO2 Probe Analyzer checks for intermittent breaks and shorts.
Then read the result form the display.

4. SpO2 Probe Analyzer Functions
This chapter describes SpO2 Probe Analyzer procedures by function.

4.1 Short Test

The short test is a complete rapid test of the finger probe. This tests
the continuity of all circuits as well as the RED/IR Response that is a
measure of the emitting and receiving elements.

4.2 Long Test

This test lasts for 30 seconds and is to be used to check the finger
probe for intermittent failures. During the 30 seconds, wiggle and
manipulate the wire and finger probe to see if there are any
intermittent breaks or shorts. This test does not perform the RED/IR
Response test because too many probes require holding the testing
elements in alignment.

NOTE: It is recommended to perform a short test, then a long test to

completely verify your probe.
