Materials

4 handouts (pattern in context, functional explanation, meaningful exercise and communicative exercise)

Procedures
T greets Ss 1. Present the Pattern in Context (4 mins.) T passes out the article Commuter Marriages to the students (*new words are explained at the bottom of the article) T instructs Ss to listen carefully and follow along while he/she reads it out loud. (*Read at a moderate speed)

2. Comprehension Check (3 mins.) T asks Ss the following questions to make sure they understood the text. T elicits answers from Ss orally and reminds them to answer in complete sentence What is Joe and Marias relationship? What is the problem they are facing in their marriage right now?(If no one answers, ask Ss to look at the cartoon and infer) Why do they live apart after they got married?

3. Identify the Pattern(5 mins.) T writes

They

have lived on the board (circle the subject, underline the

pattern whole verb), and then reads the entire sentence They are still married..

T instructs Ss to find similar pattern in the text (*circle the subject, underline the pattern whole verb) T models one more time and writes it down on the board (*choose a different form)
It

hasnt been

T gives Ss 2 minutes to work with their neighbor and find the rest of the pattern T calls out Ss to share their answer and list them on the board

4. Formal Explanation(6 mins.) T points to the words listed on the board and ask Ss How many different forms do we have here? Ss may need more scaffolding here, so T can continue to ask We can see have in front of the verb here, what else? Ss: has/ hasnt/ve T: Good. have/has and we also have their negatives and contractions. First lets see how to form an affirmative sentence. We form the present perfect with have/has +______? Pause to wait for Ss answer the past participle, p.p. (write on the board) T gives Ss the handout of irregular past and past participle forms T instructs Ss to look at the article and tells them regular p.p. form is the same as the simple past form (e.g. lived, decided), add -edat the end. Then, tell Ss they need to memorize the irregular p.p. form. (e.g. been, gone, seen, had) and they can use the handout for reference. T:Some of you just mentioned ve. Its the contraction of____? Ss: have. T writes the following on the board Affirmative contractions (+): I have=Ive You have= Youve We have= Weve They have=Theyve T: You also mentioned hasnt. Its the contraction of____? Ss: has not. T writes the following on the board Negative contractions (-): Have/has +nt T reads the contractions out loud and Ss read after the T T notes the contraction form Hes=He + has or He + is (also Shes/ Its) Ask Ss to look at the word after the contraction to determine which form it is T gives examples: Hes sleeping. Which form? He is ? or He has? Why? Because _ing Shes eaten two pieces of pizza. Which form? He is? Or He has? Why? Because eaten is the pp of eat. He has=Hes She has=Shes It has=Its

T asks Ss how to form a yes/no question in the present perfect tense and look at the sentences in the text again T says: Have they lived apart ever since? Have they decided to travel back and forth? Has it been easy? Has the effort paid off? Then T can tell Ss simply put have/has at the beginning of the sentence and keep the rest the same to form a yes/no question T asks Ss:What is this tense called? Ss: present perfect T:How do we form the present perfect? Ss: have/has+p.p.

5. Mechanical Exercise (3 mins.) T elicits response from Ss orally (*Encourage Ss to use contractions in speaking) First T writes +, - ? and the following sentences on the board ________________ (eat) Mexican food. ________________(take) the TOEFL test. _________________(serve) in the military. Then T models the exercise T points to + and says: I have (Ive) eaten Mexican food. Then point to and say: I have not (I havent) eaten Mexican food. Point to ? and the Ss say: Have you eaten Mexican food? T models it again using different subjects T points to + and one student: He has (Hes) eaten Mexican food. Then point to and another student: She has not (She hasnt) eaten Mexican food. Point to ? and two students: Have they eaten Mexican food? Ss practice the exercise with Ts direction similar to the procedure above T can explicitly tell Ss the subject he/she wants the Ss to use while point to +,-, ? For example, T points to + and says: Use he S: He has served in the military.

6. Functional Explanation (6 mins.)

T:Now lets see how we can use the present perfect in context. Pass out grammar notes handout to Ss Ask one S to read the first point and the sample sentence Ask another S to read the second point and the sample sentence T explains the content: What is indefinite time? T: You can use the present perfect when you dont know when something happened or when the specific time is not important. What is specific time? E.g. in 2013,2001; yesterday;last week/month/year Add a true and relevant example T: Has anyone been to any restaurants recently? What kind of restaurant is that? Write Ss name and answer on the board E.g. Zoe _____________ (be) to an Italian restaurant. Ashley_______________ (be) to Mexican Ok so what can we use here? Simple past or present perfect? Why? Ask Ss : Do you remember when was the last time you went to that restaurant? Write the time after the previous sentences Ask Ss again, now which tense should we use here? Simple past or present perfect? Why? Ask S to read grammar notes 3 T introduces window of opportunity T supports an additional example T shows movie posters to Ss T: Do you know the name of the movies? (after earth and avatar) After Earth Its a new sci-fi movie starring Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith. Its in theater right now, I watched it last Saturday. Avatar is an old sci-fi movie that came out in 2009. If we are talking about movies and I want to know if you watched any of the two movies, what question can I ask? T writes on the board : ____________________ (watch) the movie after earth?

_______________ (watch) the movie avatar? Pause to wait for Ss answer and ask why T asks if there are any questions 7. Meaningful Exercise (10 mins.) T passes out the attached phone conversation handout to the Ss T does the first two blanks with the Ss and explains its function T assigns Ss into five groups of three to work on the exercise together, tell Ss they have 5 minutes and they need to explain how they made the choice based on context T circulates in the classroom to answer Ss questions and assess Ss T elicits answers and discusses with Ss

8. Communicative Exercise (13 mins.) Find someone who (see attached learning about your classmates experiences handout) Ss need to make present perfect yes/no questions with the cue words. T instructs Ss to begin each question with Have you ever? T gives Ss 10 mins to talk to each other and write the persons name on their handout (*Remind student to answer the questions in complete sentence and use the irregular past and past participle forms for reference) T calls on Ss to tell the class what they learned about each other
