CORDURA

Fabric Quality Standards for Fabrics Used in Packs, Luggage, Footwear, Workwear, Motorcycle Clothing, Upholstery, and Other Accessories 1
PRODUCT INFORMATION FOR GENERAL RELEASE JULY 14, 2008
CORDURA

fabrics provide rugged, durable per-

formance for a variety of end uses, including packs,
luggage, footwear, and specialist/performance apparel.
Products made from CORDURA

fabrics feature en-

hanced tear and abrasion resistance, and long-lasting
durability.
CORDURA

fabrics can be made in a variety of

weights and constructions, from lightweight fabrics
for general clothing applications, to heavier fabrics
for packs, luggage and reinforcements. This document
covers the quality standards for woven or knit fabrics
used in packs, luggage, footwear, workwear, motor-
cycle clothing, upholstery, and other accessories. For
general apparel standards, see: Quality Standards for
CORDURA

Brand Performance Fabrics for Apparel

(Doc. Ref. P021).
Fabric Quality Standards
CORDURA

brand quality standards vary by fabric

type, yarn content, and construction.
Table 1 lists the qualifying yarns for use in CORDURA

fabrics that are intended for the end-uses covered by
this document. INVISTA reserves the right to add,
modify, or remove items from this listing at any time.
There are two categories of CORDURA

brand fabric:
CORDURA

fabric woven or knit fabrics

constructed with any of the qualifying INVISTA
yarns listed in Table 1.
CORDURA

ballistic fabric woven fabrics

constructed with qualifying INVISTA high-tenacity
nylon 6,6 or nylon 6 yarns in a basket weave
construction.
Fabrics must be submitted to INVISTA for inspec-
tion and testing. A minimum of 1 (one) yard/meter of
full-width fnished fabric and 1 (one) yard/meter of
greige fabric must be submitted with the appropriate
submission form.

narrows/webbing fabrics
Table 2 contains the quality standards for woven
fabrics used in packs, luggage, footwear, workwear
reinforcements, upholstery and other accessories.
Use this table in conjunction with either of the fabric
weight matrixes in Table 6a (SI units) or 6b (English
units). The matrixes show the minimum greige fabric
weight for a given yarn combination, with recommen-
dations on coating level for fnished fabrics.
Table 3 gives the performance standards for motor-
cycle garments and reinforcements.
Table 4 contains the quality standards for knit fabrics
used in footwear, automotive upholstery, and mesh or
spacer fabrics.
Table 5 gives the quality standards for narrows/web-
bing fabrics.
Performance Tests
(for Motorcycle End Use Applications only)
Abrasion: Modified Wyzenbeek (TM 1507-90)
This is a requirement for motorcycle-wear only. Fabrics
are mounted on an abrasion machine that rubs in the
warp and weft direction for the prescribed number of
cycles, or until both a warp thread and a weft thread
have been worn away.
Grab Strength (ASTM D5034)
Fabric samples are mounted in a tensile testing ma-
chine and extended until they break.
Tear Strength (ISO 4674-1: Trouser Tear Method)
This test measures the force required to tear a fabric
sample along a pre-made cut. The average peak load
(in Newtons) between two set points is reported

NOTES:
Fabric weight matrix for plain or fancy weave minimum greige weight (g/m
2
or oz/yd

) for packs, luggage, and boots.
Large differences in yarn count (dtex/denier) between warp and fill yarns can negatively influence fabric tear strength.
Ballistic constructions (2x2/3x2/4x4 basket) require a 1.25 x factor (griege and coating weight) to be certified as CORDURA

Ballistic.
Fabrics woven with polyester Type 488HP CORDURA

qualifying yarns shall meet the following construction guidelines:

335 dtex (305 denier) = 102 T (T is the sum of warp + weft ends/inch)
670 dtex (610 denier) = 74 T
1015 dtex (905 denier) = 60 T
