Former Army Chief Guilty Of Mutiny: Rules Fiji Judge

Continued From Page 1
Justice Paul Madigan has overruled the assessors in the Pita Driti trial and found the former Republic of Fiji Military Forces Land Force Commander guilty of inciting to mutiny. Colonel Pita Driti was the Fiji military's land force commander when Commodore Bainimarama staged his 2006 coup. He is alleged to have been part of a plot to assassinate the attorney-general and banish interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama in 2010. Devanesh Sharma, former president of the Fiji Law Society, said it is not unusual for a Suva High Court judge to overturn the findings of a jury. "I mean at the end of the day, the final protection of any high court trial is that the judge will make the final decision because the judge is normally a very experienced person who will know the law," he said. Fiji's local media is reporting Justice Paul Madigan has deferred sentencing until December 10 and Driti remains in custody. Justice Madigan told the High Court in Suva that he did not believe Dritis evidence. He was evasive, divertive, petulant and ungracious. That in itself does not make him guilty, nor does he have anything to prove but he contradicted himself and gave evidence that was incapable of belief, thereby in no way detracting from the compelling evidence of Tagicakibau, he said. Justice Madigan also ruled that the second count of seditious offences charged in the alternative falls away. Driti was found guilty of attempting to seduce Lieutenant-Colonel Manasa Tagicakibau from his duty and allegiance to Fiji. he was visiting Fijian troops in Sudan. Tagicakibau said he and two other officers blew the whistle on the plot just before Mr Bainimarama's scheduled departure for Sudan. Justice Madigan added that Driti was calling into aid the head of a crack platoon of unarmed combat specialists, Warrant Officer Tevita Korovou. He said WO Korovou was most reluctant to give evidence of his meeting with the Driti and whatever might have been said at that meeting, WO Korovou came away from it with the distinct impression that there was going to be another coup. Justice Madigan said the fact given in evidence by Driti, that on hearing of the plan he did nothing but stood back and considered it without reporting it to the Commander, did not serve him well. The irresistible inference is that he supported it and was doing whatever he could to justify it and further it, he said. Thinking that the plan may have been a set-up did not lead to the accused to take appropriate steps to deal with the possible set-up. Asking the purported architect of the plan: Is this a set-up?, does nothing to create confidence in his evidence. In believing the evidence of Tagicakibau and finding nothing in the evidence of the accused to counter it, the case against him is overwhelming and I find beyond reasonable doubt that at the relevant times he was making an attempt to persuade the major from his loyalties to both service and State, he said. Driti was subsequently arrested and an alleged co-conspirator, LieutenantColonel Tevita Mara, fled to neighbouring Tonga, where he has ties to the royal family.

RFMF Chief Of Staff Will Not Be Investigated

The matter came up many times in court that Aziz was the alleged initiator and purported architect of the Sudan Plan in 2010. Pryde said there is no comment when we asked him if there are any files with the DPPs Office relating to this matter. He said the right people to comment on this issue would be the police. Brigadier General Aziz is currently accompanying Defence Minister, Joketani Cokanasiga on an official visit to China. Pita Driti remains in custody until the 10th of next month for mitigation and sentencing after being convicted of inciting to mutiny. The maximum sentence for the charge is 15 years imprisonment.

Defence counsel, Filimoni Vosarogo will submit their mitigation submissions on December 10 while state lawyer, Mosese Korovou will be making their sentencing submission. Driti has been remanded in custody and will reappear in court on December 10. In his judgment Justice Madigan said he found Lieutenant-Colonel Tagicakibau to be an honest and convincing witness. He told the court of meetings with the accused in which he was asked not once but at least twice to use his private intelligence cell, the existence of which was known to the accused, to conduct surveillance on the AttorneyGeneral, Justice Madigan said. The rationale behind that request was quite clearly to get information to discredit the Attorney and to bring him down. That, coupled with the stated perception of the witness (Tagicakibau) that, whatever had been said as to removal or elimination, he had the impression that the Attorneys life was to be taken. Tagicakibau said Driti complained

that Attorney-General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum, widely seen as Mr Bainimarama's number two, had too much influence on the military leader and should be killed. He said Driti was having the A-G tailed, making enquiries about his social connections and his income. He said the evidence of LieutenantColonel Tagicakibau and the surrounding circumstances established an overwhelming case against Driti. Justice Madigan said he did not believe Driti knew nothing of any plans until Roko Ului Mara visited him in midSeptember. He was before that time, on his own admission, receiving official and unofficial intelligence reports on at least a weekly basis, he said. Justice Madigan said in addition to the findings of credibility, circumstances led him to believe that Driti was taking active steps to impugn the reputation of the A-G, to cement disdain for him and to bring about the downfall of the Commanders administration. He allegedly wanted to depose Mr Bainimarama in October 2010 while

Republic of Fiji Military Forces Chief of Staff, Brigadier General Mohammed Aziz will not be investigated by the police relating to the allegations levelled against him in the Pita Driti trial. Acting Police Commissioner, Rusiate Tudravu has confirmed to Legend FM News that those allegations against Brigadier General Aziz were made by Driti however there is no proof. Tudravu said Brigadier General Aziz was interviewed by the police when Pita Driti was taken in for questioning. Earlier this week, Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde had said that he will not comment on the allegations levelled against Brigadier General Mohammed Aziz in Dritis trial.

Ex-Fiji Woman Killed, Fijian Man Charged

4 Police have named Sarwan Lata Singh
Murder victim had protection order
as the 38-year-old woman found dead at a Wellington home in the suburb of Woodridge early Tuesday. A man has been charged with her murder - and with breaching a protection order meant to keep him away from her. The man appeared in Wellington District Court on charges including murder, aggravated burglary of Singh's home, and breaching a protection order. Judge Phil Moran remanded him to secure psychiatric care for a report to determine his fitness to plead and instruct a lawyer. His name was suppressed. Police said he and his alleged victim knew each other. They have not described the nature of their relationship. Police went to her home in Kentwood Drive after a call to emergency services about 1.17am on Tuesday. They found her dead and the man injured. Police have confirmed that Singh had taken out a protection order against the accused. The past year has seen high-profile cases of men being convicted of murder after breaching protection orders taken out by their victims. Bosses In Govt Firms Taking Bribes: AG

Fijis Attorney General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum says some senior leaders of state owned enterprises and statutory organisations are taking bribes. Sayed Khaiyum said corruption is rife and must be rooted out if Fiji is to achieve greatness. Addressing directors from various government ministries, departments as well as statutory organisations at a three-day workshop in Suva, the attorney general said there have been cases where people in leadership use their powers not to further the objectives of the organisations they serve but to further their personal agendas. He highlighted some instances where people take bribes directly, some others ignore proper processes that are supposed to be followed, or people who have been directors of various boards have allowed those state-owned enterprises or statutory bodies to go and procure services from their own companies. In some cases some senior officials have allowed finances from the organisations they serve to be used for their own personal purposes. We have instances where directors who are taking decision receive bribes whether its paying for their children's school fees or their medical bills on in relation to them partnering with properties or getting a loan, Sayed-Khaiyum said. There are others he says who do right by declaring their interest at the first instance, only to turn around and engage in corrupt practices. He said practices such as these need to stop. He reminded senior officials that their duty is to the organisation they serve. You cant serve two masters at one time, Sayed-Khaiyum said. Take this opportunity to contribute positively to the organisation which you serve and by doing that you not only assist the organization, but overall you contribute to the growth of the economy. The workshop continues over the next two days at the Holiday Inn. Its conducted by the Australian Institute of Company Directors for senior officials of Fiji's Public Enterprises including representatives of Fiji Link, Housing Authority, Trade Ministry, and Fisheries Department among others.

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum with recipients of the Government's National Export Strategy.

RBF Maintains Overnight Policy Rate

Fijis Reserve Bank has maintained the overnight policy rate (OPR) at 0.5 per cent. Governor and board chairman, Barry Whiteside attributed this to positive performances and key sectors of the economy while consumption and investment activity have remained buoyant, supported by adequate liquidity and low interest rates in the financial system. Inflation in October increased slightly to 3.3 per cent, largely due to higher prices of certain food and alcoholic beverage items. Foreign reserves remain comfortable at $1,869.7 million, sufficient to cover 5.1 months of retained imports of

FIJI is one step ahead in terms of laws to combat money laundering through the casino sector. This will be defined under the AntiMoney Laundering Framework under the Financial Transaction Reporting Act. "The obligations and requirements that we will have for banks, accountants and lawyers, if we do have a casino and then those obligations will also be applied to the casino sector," Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit director Razim Buksh said. Mr Buksh said this meant Fiji would have a system of transparency and uniformity for financial service providers. "And the casino sector is a high risk sector because traditionally we have been concentrating on commercial banks, remittance service providers

goods and non-factor services. Given the positive performance, Whiteside expects the growth forecast for 2014 to be higher than 3.0 per cent. He commended the increased capital expenditure and the continuation of the structural reforms announced in the 2014 Budget. Whiteside said the higher expenditure will result in increased imports which would pose risks to the balance of payments next year. Foreign reserves, which are currently at record highs, are expected to remain comfortable, he said. He noted that Fiji will need to drive economic activity internally given the existing soft global economic climate.

FIU has been working with the government on the laws and requirements for companies that want to build casinos in the country. "If somebody offshore or our people want to do the casino business then the requirement kicks in," he said. "If there is any suspicion that money could be linked to the proceeds of crime coming in to launder their money then the casino operator has a legal mandate to report that suspicious transaction to FIU."

Construction contract and the necessary finance agreement have been signed for the Pleass Global Ltd factory project. The project will be the company's new corporate head office and water bottling factory. Company chairman Warwick Pleass said in addition to the board's confidence in the future of the company, he was pleased to have the support and endorsements from the Namosi Provincial Council and tui Namosi Ratu Suliani Matanitobua. In 2009, the company announced that it acquired over 420 acres of freehold land at Namosi, at the source of AquaSafe and VaiWai natural artesian water. "120 acres has been set aside for company operations, encompassing

the head office and water bottling, Kila Eco Adventure Park and Kila Organics farming. On the remaining 300 plus acres, the company has plans to develop a residential, commercial and industrial subdivision called Kila Estates," the company said in a statement. It said phase one was the completion of the farm and in-bound tourism improvements. This announcement relates to phase two of the development being the offices, water factory and associated residences. Mr Pleass said the board had been patiently waiting for the right time to commence construction of the water factory, and the right market conditions now prevail.

HEALTH Minister Doctor Neil Sharma says the government should introduce tax laws that tax soft drinks according to its sugar and salt contents. "The higher the amount of sugar in a drink, the higher the tax should be," he said. "Market forces will encourage people to buy those drinks which have low sugar content as these drinks would be cheaper and manufacturers will reformula their ware." Dr Sharma made the comments as the Health Ministry marks the end of its NCD program for 2013 this month. He said the ministry was grateful to noodle manufacturers for reducing the salt content by 15 per cent, saying similar steps should also be taken by other manufacturers. "We are looking towards a further reduction in salt by another 15 per cent in 2014. "The amount of sugar and salt in soft

drinks should also be re-looked into by regulations. International soft drink companies are saying they use a 'secret formula' to manufacture soft drinks. "What does the so-called 'secret formula' contain, no one knows. Trade and commerce in unhealthy food and drinks are given precedence over public health issues." Dr Sharma also said obesity was a major problem in Fiji and underpinned NCDs. He encouraged people to eat food low in fat. "All of us are aware that cheap meats are being imported and sold in the country. We have sausages and nuggets which have high fat contents as well. He said the ministry advocated reduction in salt, sugar and fat intake because they were the leading causes of NCDs in the country, and everyone must work together to make a difference.

SEVERAL members of the Australian Federal Police are assisting the Fiji Police Force on the further testing of the illicit drugs that were seized from two containers at the Suva Kings Wharf last week. Chief operations officer Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that the team from Australia arrived in the country last weekend. "They are here to assist us on further testing of the drugs," ACP Tudravu said. The team from Australia were seen outside the Central Police Station with members of the Fiji Police Force unloading the illicit drugs. ACP Tudravu said they were unloading the drugs for further testing. "We are still conducting the

investigations. There is no time frame set on when the tests will be completed." The illicit drugs were reportedly seized by the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority last week. The containers were addressed to a local importer, who had ordered two containers of soya bean oil from China. They were tested positive for GHB, which is an illicit drug under the Illicit Drugs Act. According to the American Family Physician website, GHB is a depressant that acts on the central nervous system and has recently become a popular drug of abuse. The website labels the drug an illicitly marketed substance that has recently gained popularity among body builders and party attendees as a drug of abuse.

Inter Island Airways (Fiji) Limiteds parent company, Aviana Airways Corporation, has entered into a formal agreement to purchase Sunflower Aviation Limited. The transaction is expected to close by end of year. Upon final legal and authority approvals, and close of sales transaction, Sunflower Aviation Limited will operate as a subsidiary of Aviana Airways. The agreement culminates lengthy discussions and due diligence work over the past 12 months with the late Donald Collingwood prior to his sudden passing away in September. Chief executive and President of both Aviana Airways and Inter Island Airways, Barney Sene, confirmed their intention to seal the deal. He said that the company will still be run as Sunflower but its basic function would be as a support company for Inter IslandsAirways. Mr Sene made these comments at the Nadi-based Sunflower Aviation Hangar. Well continue to expand Sunflowers maintenance side which will be used for Inter-Island aircraft as well and the main engineering organisation for Inter Island, he said. Don Collingwood, a pioneer in Fijian aviation, wanted to grow and expand

Aviana Airways To Buy Sunflower Aviation

Sunflower Aviation and sought out a partner that shared a common vision to expand and grow the Fiji aviation and travel market. Being part of the Aviana family was a perfect fit for Sunflower since both companies and owners had common synergies and goals. Mr Sene said Sunflower is a great brand. We intend to expand this brand and its operations to support Inter Island Airways (Fiji) and other air operators in Fiji and the South Pacific, he said. Inter Island Airways will be the newest domestic airline and Mr Sene lately indicated it plans to launch domestic air services in March. Sunflower Aviation include offering US Federal Aviation Administration commercial pilot licensing as part of the Pacific Flying School programme. Mr Sene said they see an opportunity to expand and make Fijian pilots more marketable in the global airline industry. This is without incurring the large expense of going overseas to obtain a US Federal Aviation Administration license. This can all be done in Fiji, he said. Aviana Airways also plans to expand the ANR 145C Exposition Aircraft Engineering and Maintenance station to also become a US aircraft repair station. Building up this competency will enable Sunflower Aviation to handle US-registered aircraft maintenance in

particular private jets as well as aircraft from our airline in American Samoa. Ultimately, we are creating technical jobs for Fiji, he said. Integration of activities Inter Island Airways will utilise Sunflower Aviations ANR 145C to service and maintain its aircraft. Mr Sene said the Pacific Flying School will be leveraged for developing the ongoing pool of pilots and flight crew for Inter Island Airways. Sunflower Aviations ground handling unit will be expanded and utilised to service Inter Island Airways aircraft, he said. Over the next 30-45 days, Aviana Airways will begin planning and integration activities with the Sunflower Aviation team and staff, including alignment of business culture and plans. This will allow Sunflower to be fully integrated and ready to move forward on day one after close of sale. Chief executive and managing director of Sunflower Aviation Limited, Roshan Ali, said: We at Sunflower Aviation are excited to be part of the Aviana Airways family. Sunflower and its employees are looking forward to working closely with our new sister company, Inter Island Airways, in the coming months and expanding Sunflower Aviation.

Elections office permanent secretary Mohammed Saneem said they are still finalising figures. He hinted at a better number than what they expected. We had a positive response. Interest in local properties from overseas buyers have increased this year, says Philip Toogood, executive director of Bayleys Real Estate (Fiji) Ltd says. He attributed the sudden increase to people feeling more confident about Fiji and in its future stability, as a result of the new constitution, commitment to holding elections next year and improvement in the global economic outlook. Toogood said there was significant interest from Australia and New Zealand. In a media interview, he mentioned having sold three apartments in the Radisson Resort and two in the Sheraton Villas Resort over a twomonth period. Prices for the 118sq m to 125sq m apartments have ranged from about $419,000-$564,000. "From a property perspective, prices and returns are also at very attractive levels. The downward correction in values that occurred post global financial crisis makes Fijian property very affordable in an international context. "And the returns on income-producing assets such as managed resort apartments are also at very good levels, partly because of the drop in value but also because the tourism market is recovering strongly." Toogood says there is shortage of developed waterfront property in Fiji suitable for the leisure market to satisfy the expected fresh demand from New Zealand and Australia so there is hope that development works at Momi Bay will cater for it. There have also been renewed interest from Americans and an increase in inquiries and sales activity from

Chinese investors, particularly in the development sector. Notable tourism property sales in Fiji completed by Bayleys include: Amunuca Island Resort and Spa, Tokoriki Island: A three-to-four-star resort with 93 rooms and a capacity of 278 guests plus comprehensive resort facilities on 16.59ha of native lease land that sold for around $6.44 million as a going concern but without management and branding commitments through Toogood and Mike Bayley. An adjoining 25-lot residential subdivision was included in the sale. Namena Island: A 43.3ha island to the southeast of Vanua Levu comprising a boutique eco resort with six villas, lounge and dining area selling for about $1.8 million (US$1.5 million) through Dirk Kirk of Bayleys Fiji. The sale included two boats, machinery, compressors and other diving equipment. A native lease has 68 years to run and a marine reserve surrounding the island provides some of the best diving in Fiji. Sovi Bay, Coral Coast: 10.9ha of freehold beachfront land in two titles on the Suva to Nadi Highway sold on behalf of a mortgagee for nearly $1.7 million through Toogood and Michael Pleciak of Bayleys Auckland. The land was formerly a proposed site for a luxury resort and residential development. Travellers Beach Resort, Nadi: A 22room budget hotel, 6km from Nadi Airport, with its own private beach, restaurant and swimming pool sold as a going concern for about $1.16 million through Kirk.

Hail Storm Rare For Fiji

A hailstorm which hit the Makoi and Narere areas in Nasinu last Saturday surprised residents who took to the streets afterwards to collect the small particles which had dropped from the sky. Alarmed by the strange sound of objects hitting her rooftop was Narere resident Shalini Prakash, who said the freak hailstorm followed heavy rain and thunderstorms in the area. "It was raining heavily with strong winds, lightning and thunderstorms. Then suddenly we realized that something was falling on our rooftops," Ms Prakash said. "So we opened our door and on the porch lay pieces of hail and it kept on falling." She said it was the first time she had ever experienced a hailstorm, admitting that it frightened her a little. "It was the first time I've actually experienced something of this sort and we were worried, but it lasted less than 30 minutes." This occurred at about 2.45pm according to Ms Prakash. The Nadi Weather Office deputy director Aminiasi Tuidraki said the hail storm in Narere area was due to very active Cumulonimbus clouds or thunderstorm cells that were around area as captured by their Nausori Weather Radar. "It is very rare to happen in Fiji due to our geographical position as we are located in the tropics where our freezing level is higher," Mr Tuidraki said in an interview. He said because of the hail stones being smaller in size and having no possibility to cause serious damages to human-made structures or crops, no severe weather warning was issued. "Hail is a form of solid precipitation. It consists of balls or irregular lumps of ice, each of which is called a hail stone. Hail stones consist mostly of water ice and measure between five millimeters (0.2inches) and 15 centimeters (six inches) in diameter." Mr Tuidraki said hail formation required environments of strong, upward motion of air with the parent thunderstorm and lowered heights of the freezing level. The last time Fiji experienced a hail storm was in October 2001 in Sigatoka.

Fijis Government has offered to help parents who cannot afford school expenses such as uniforms and lunches in addition to the provision of free education in 2014. In a statement, the government says they will assist parents who may not be able to afford to cover other school expenses including uniform and school lunches. But this must be brought to the attention of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Social Welfare, provincial or advisory councilors and various NGOs, the statement said. Fiji schools who qualify for the free education policy in 2014 will receive their grant by January 10, 2014. The ministry reiterates that no primary or secondary school - except for private schools - should ask any parent for school fees. Schools that do not adhere to the policy will face the consequence of the Education Act. For 2014 the term one grants will be released based on the 2013 term 3 school roll. The grants for term two and three will be adjusted after the school roll for 2014 is received. The schools will still be required to submit their audited financial report of 2013 to qualify for these grants. The audited financial report will have to be tabled at the annual general meeting and endorsed by the members. The ministry will keep a tab on the usage of funds to ensure its properly utilized for the purpose of teaching and

learning materials. Textbooks will be provided for free, but because of financial constraints students will have to share. However, parents who can afford to buy their children textbooks are welcome to do so. Parents are also responsible for extracurricular expenses such as scouts, girl guides, cadets, excursions, swimming classes likewise cover costs of uniforms, lunches, and stationery. The subsidized bus fare scheme will also continue next year for students whose parents' combined salary amounts to less than $15,000. Government also clarified fees arrangement for schools that offer boarding education. The boarding fees remain the same. For example if you paid $300 per year in 2013 you will continue to pay $300 in 2014. However to help the boarding facilities provide better food and accommodation the government will give a further grant directly to the boarding facility - $30 per child per year for secondary and - $90 per child per year for primary. These funds will go directly to the boarding facility. In special circumstances there is also remission of fees for secondary boarders with a ceiling of $50 per student per year. This assistance has to be applied for by parents of students who earn below $6,500. Parents are also advised to clear all previous debts.

Dad Gets 16 Years For Daughter's Rape A 50-year-old father who raped his
daughter numerous times between August 3, 2008 and January 17, 2010 in various places including their family home has been sentenced to 16 years in jail by the Suva High Court. Pauliasi Mataunitoga is not eligible for parole after he has served 15 years. In handing down his ruling, Judge Justice Salesi Temo said Mataunitoga abused his daughter's trust and acted in a way that was unacceptable. He described Mataunitoga as a typical coward. "Through your offending, you have not only ruined the complainant's life, you have also ruined your family's life. Your family doesn't deserve the treatment you have meted out to them," Justice Temo said. The court heard that it began on August 3, 2008 at Vatukalo village in Levuka when the father was 46 years of age and the girl, 19. He removed his clothes and exposed himself to her

before forcing her to masturbate him. The next day on August 4, 2008, he took her to the family farm where he had sex with her without her consent. On September 22, 2008, he woke the girl to masturbate him. On October 29, 2008 and November 26, 2008 in the family home, her father threatened her with a cane knife before raping her. In the months of December 2008, January 30, 2009, March 28, 2009 and June16, 2009, Mataunitoga forced his daughter to masturbate him. On December 26, 2009 and January 17, 2010 he raped his daughter in the family home while repeatedly threatening to kill her if she told anyone. The matter was reported to police on January 18, 2010. Mataunitoga admitted the offence and was charged with rape and indecent assault. He had been remanded in custody since March 15, 2012. Justice Judge Temo also ordered the victim's name is suppressed.

A handful of 40 beggars profiled in Fijis capital city Suva have been resettled in HARTs and at St Vincent House, a homeless shelter on Brown Street. Majority of them are mentally challenged and homeless, according to a survey conducted by the Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation Ministrys Inter-Agency Taskforce on Beggars. Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation permanent secretary Dr Josefa Koroivueta said plans are in place to place them for longer term in institutions to be provided with care and support. Others who were found begging on streets in Suva owned properties and are landlords who would change into rags before begging. Four such beggars were identified and evicted from the streets likewise those who owned properties and others who exploited children to gain public sympathy and make easy money. Following the success of the profiling survey, the ministry plans to extend it to other towns and cities. The taskforce was formed in June this year by the Ministry of Social Welfare in conjunction with the Fiji Police along with other relevant government and non-governmental organisations to provide an understanding on factors that drive persons to street begging and present solutions to address it.

Jumbo Jet Successfully Takes Off Teachers On Tuk-Tuk World Tour After Unexpected Stopover To Promote Education
Two UK teachers on a world tour promoting education have overtaken the record for the longest journey made in a tuk-tuk. Richard Sears and Nick Gough have travelled 37,500 kilometres and passed through 37 countries, supporting grassroots education projects in Africa, Asia and South America. They passed the current record for a tuk-tuk journey of 37,410km, set by Germans Susi Bemsel and Daniel Snaider in 2005, while crossing Northern Peru. The pair, who left London in August, have tackled deserts, negotiated jungles and survived encounters with elephants as well as an accident in Malaysia when a truck ploughed into the back of their tuk-tuk. "Although there have been many testing times, we have been privileged to experience such wonderful places and meet some truly remarkable individuals," Mr Gough said. As part of their adventure the pair set up the Tuk Tuk Educational Trust charity to raise funds for education projects highlighted via short films being made during the expedition. They are also raising awareness for the Global Campaign for Education and talking at schools and universities to engage students in debate surrounding the role of education. Their choice of transport was designed to take advantage of its slow-paced, open and friendly nature to explore and unlock different cultures and communities and learn about and from their values, struggles, inspirations and ambitions. When their tuk-tuk broke down, not for the first time and just 70 kilometres short of the current world record mark, the pair had to push the 800-kilogram vehicle for three days to make up the distance. Having had their tuk-tuk fixed in Chepen, Peru, Mr Sears and Mr Gough are back on the road and hoping to become the first people to drive a tuktuk around the world. They are expected to pass that milestone in Northern Chile at the weekend. They will then enter the final leg of their journey through South America which will involve negotiating the cold temperatures, high altitude and narrow roads of the Andes before reaching Rio de Janeiro in Brazil next month. Guinness has yet to verify any new record set.

A giant cargo plane has successfully taken off from a small Kansas airport after accidentally landing there the night before. The Boeing 747 Dreamlifter, en route from New York, mistakenly landed at Colonel James Jabara Airport, about 13 kilometres from its intended destination at McConnell Air Force Base. Shortly after landing, the pilot and air traffic control at McConnell went back and forth trying to figure out which airport the plane was at. Controller: Giant 4241 heavy, confirm you know which airport youre at. Pilot: Well, we think we have a pretty good pulse. Controller: Giant 4241 heavy, it appears you are at Jabara. Pilot: Uh, say again? Controller: Giant 4241 heavy, we saw the plane on the radar and it appears you are at Jabara airport. Airport authorities say it is still unclear how and why the blunder happened. "That's the question that we're all asking," Wichita Airport Authority spokeswoman Valerie Wise said. "[The plane] landed safely. There was no damage to the aircraft and no damage to the airport.

"That's a major feat." There were concerns the two-kilometre runway at the airport would not be able to handle the take-off of the giant cargo plane. The Boeing 747 Dreamlifter is a modified 747-400 passenger airplane that can haul more cargo by volume than any airplane in the world. When fully loaded, the plane normally needs a runway of 2,780 metres. Atlas Air, which operates the aircraft, brought in a tug to turn the plane around and its engineers ran calculations on whether it could take off again. "They feel it is perfectly safe to take off from Jabara," Ms Wise said before take-off. Their fears proved unfounded the next afternoon, when the aircraft taxied and took off without a hitch in cold, rainy weather. Once airborne, it was a short flight. The plane landed just minutes later at the correct airport. Air traffic controllers took to social media to express their delight with the result. Congrats to the Giant 4241 pilots on getting that #Dreamlifter out of Jabara Airportnow don't come back, ya hear?

A Chinese baby boy who had been declared dead was saved from being cremated alive when he started crying at a funeral parlour. The parents of the critically-ill boy, who was less than one month old, had agreed to end his medical treatment at Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital in eastern China, hospital sources told the Xinhua state news agency. A death certificate was issued before the baby was sent to undertakers in Hefei, the provincial capital, but staff there was alerted to the situation when the baby started crying. It was unclear how long he had been at the funeral parlour, or when his cremation had been due. The baby was immediately sent back to the hospital, as reported. "Because the baby still had life signs, we continued to give him transfusion

to maintain his life for humanitarian reasons," a hospital staff member said. The baby was born with a "congenital respiratory system malformation", reports said. He was receiving treatment at the hospital late on Wednesday. A doctor had been suspended, a nursing worker laid off and an investigation launched into the incident, Xinhua cited the hospital as saying. Users of China's weibo microblogging services were outraged, blaming both the boy's parents and the doctors involved. "Please sentence the parents to five years in jail for abandonment," said one poster. Another wrote: "Doctors with white coats are really irresponsible, simply treating patients' lives with utter disregard."

Hordes of frenzied shoppers queued for hours at a charity shop in London to buy clothes and shoes donated by Victoria and David Beckham to raise money for victims of Typhoon Haiyan. The celebrity couple gave 20 boxes of their second-hand attire to the British Red Cross in Chelsea for the charity effort. The sale came as the Philippines government announced that the death toll has now passed 5,200. Dozens and dozens of designer shoes and suits sold for as little as $160 each, a fraction of their original price. But each customer was limited to only one item. "The clothes were priced very reasonably," said Red Cross spokeswoman Laura Hinks. "David and Victoria wanted everyone to have an opportunity to buy something." The window display featured a white suit and black shirt belonging to the former England captain. Beside it was a t-shirt with his wife's nickname 'Posh' and a white jacket with 'Spice Girls' on the back. Inside, five shelves were stacked with Victoria's shoes and a rail of David's jumpers on sale for about $60 each. Among the bounty was a pair of Victoria's cow print boots and denim and snakeskin cowboy boots, with her name picked out in gemstones. There was also a red short skirt featuring the names of the couple's

sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz. Men were even snapping up pairs of Victoria's heels, some of which later turned up on eBay. Victoria Beckham had earlier posted a picture of herself on Twitter sitting among a pile of boxes as she packed up the clothes, along with another snap of a cascading pile of shoes. Even though most of the former Spice Girl singer's clothes were too small for the average woman, the racks were emptied in a flash. "We're going to close early because we'll be sold out. Everything has gone really quickly," said Ms Hinks. A woman proudly tried on her new Le Silla high heeled shoes in the street, while another showed off a yellow Chanel jacket. A similar mass donation by Victoria Beckham to a cancer campaign in 2010 raised more than $13,000. Ms Hinks said the famous couple hope other people will follow suit. "They're really hoping this encourages other people to go to their local British Red Cross shop and donate clothes," said Ms Hinks. "Everyone has something in their closet they were holding onto, a dress, suit, or pair of shoes they thought they might wear again," Victoria Beckham said in a statement. "Dig them out, bag them up, drop them off and give someone else the chance to buy them, raising much needed funds for the Red Cross aid effort."

A California judge has temporarily curbed production of the popular sriracha Asian-style hot sauce after residents of a Los Angeles suburb complained of the factory's odour. The fumes emitted from Huy Fong Foods' factory in Irwindale are "extremely annoying, irritating and offensive to the senses", Judge Robert O'Brien said. He ordered the company to cease any operations that cause the odours. The factory churns 100 million lb (45.4 million kg) of chilli pepper a year. Tear-inducing odours Mr O'Brien did not specify the types of actions required by his ruling, and stopped short of ordering the factory to shut down entirely. Irwindale City Attorney Fred Galante called it "a strong ruling that acknowledges and is reflective of the concerns that the community has raised about the health impacts of the odour", Reuters news agency reported.

The city of Irwindale sued the hot sauce manufacturer on October 21 after residents complained of health ailments - including heartburn, asthma and nosebleeds - as a result of the factory's odours. Mr O'Brien found there was a "lack of credible evidence" linking such health problems to the factory, but said the city was "likely to prevail" if the fumes were labelled a public nuisance. His injunction is an interim measure while the court considers the city's lawsuit, which is not expected to go to trial for several months. Huy Fong Foods founder David Tran says his company, which made about $85m last year, has been working with the city to reduce the smell. But he has said he will not change the type of chilli pepper used, as it makes for a better hot sauce. "If it doesn't smell, we can't sell," Mr Tran has said. "If the city shuts us down, the price of sriracha will jump a lot."

150-Million-Year-Old Dinosaur US Consulate In Belfast Issues NI Skeleton Sells At Auction For $720K Safety Advice To Citizens
US citizens have been advised to be extra vigilant when travelling to Northern Ireland. Security checkpoints have been stepped up in Belfast after a car bomb partially exploded outside a shopping centre. No-one was injured. Police said the pre-Christmas checkpoints would be "random, unpredictable and short". The US Consulate General in Belfast urged Americans to "avoid suspicious activity, vehicles or packages". It also said US citizens should try to stay clear of areas where demonstrations are taking place, and "exercise caution in the vicinity of any parades or protests". With the increased security presence in the run-up to Christmas, traders in Belfast have been assured by a senior policeman that the operation will be "sensitive" to their needs. "There will be checkpoints - but they will be random, they will be unpredictable and they will be for short periods of time," said Chief Supt Alan McCrum. "Belfast is open for business. Belfast is a safe place to shop and the police in Belfast will ensure that it remains safe not just now, not just over Christmas, but for the months that lie ahead." Chief Supt McCrum said he would be regularly meeting traders and retail groups to get their views on the security operation. He called on the public to be "extra vigilant" and to report anything suspicious to the police. Hijacked Meanwhile, the police and Army have carried out an extensive search operation in north Belfast following the car bomb on Sunday. The bombers hijacked a car in Ardoyne, north Belfast, and forced the driver to take the bomb to Victoria Square shopping centre in the city centre. On Tuesday morning, police cordoned off Jamaica Street where the driver's car was hijacked. They conducted door-to-door enquiries. One eyewitness said that up to 20 police officers, accompanied by about 10 soldiers and an Army bomb disposal team, arrived in the area on Tuesday morning. Officers looked under vehicles and over garden fences during the operation, which lasted for several hours. A police spokesman said: "Police carried out a search operation in the Jamaica Street area of north Belfast in relation to the investigation into the explosive device at Victoria Street on Sunday 24 November." The explosion was the first attempted car bombing in central Belfast for several years and dissident republican paramilitaries have been blamed for the attack.

A dinosaur skeleton has sold at auction in the UK for nearly $720,000. The diplodocus skeleton, nicknamed Misty, is more than 150 million years old and 17 metres in length. It was unearthed at a quarry in the US state of Wyoming and is one of only a handful of skeletons in existence that is relatively complete. The identity of its new owner remains unknown. "Finding a reasonably complete diplodocus of this size is extremely rare," said Errol Fuller, a natural history expert and curator of the sale. "They are only ever really found by

luck." It was found by the teenage sons of German paleontologist Raimund Albersdoerfer. The two boys came across Misty's fossilised bones after their father sent them to hunt another area, because they were distracting him from his own search. Since the discovery was made on private rather than federal land, it was possible for the German to remove the fossils from the US. They were sent to the Netherlands, where they were cleaned and assembled, and then to the UK, where Misty was sold to the owner.

The first book printed in what is today the USA has sold for more than $15 million at auction in New York, becoming the world's most expensive printed book. A translation of Biblical psalms, The Bay Psalm Book was printed by Puritan settlers in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1640. One of only 11 surviving copies from the original 1,700, it was sold at a onelot auction in just minutes by Sotheby's. Bidding opened at $US6 million and closed swiftly at a hammer price of $US12.5 million, rising to $US14.165 million (around $15.5 million) once the buyer's premium was incorporated. The book, with its browning pages and gilt edges, was displayed in a glass case behind the auctioneer to the small crowd who attended the auction. The bidding lasted less than five minutes, and was won buy David Rubenstein, a billionaire American financier and philanthropist. He was in Australia and his bid was conducted by telephone. Sotheby's had valued the book at between $US15 million and $US30 million, but denied any disappointment in the sale price. Auctioneer David Redden says the sale price "represents a new world record

Bay Psalm Book, Published In 1640S, Sets New World Record After Selling For More Than $15M At Auction
for any printed book". The previous record was $US11.5 million, reached when a copy of John James Audubon's Birds of America sold at Sotheby's in December 2010. Rare book to be loaned to libraries Mr Redden says Mr Rubenstein plans to share the psalm book with the American public by loaning it to a number of libraries around the country and placing it on long-time loan to one of them. He says The Bay Psalm Book is a "great rarity" and that only two of 11 surviving copies have come to sale in the past 100 years. The settlers, who came to the US to seek religious freedom, had set about making their own preferred translation from the Hebrew original of the Old Testament book after arriving from Europe. Mr Redden has described the price as "very strong and hefty". "It's very important because of its story. It's the first book printed in America and the first book written in America," he said. "With it, New England declared its independence from the Church of England." The 11 original 1640 copies that have survived are in collections such as The Library of Congress in New York and Harvard College Library. No copy had previously been auctioned since 1947, when a different copy fetched $US151,000, a record at the time for any book, including the Gutenberg Bible or Shakespeare's First Folio. The book was sold by the Old South Church in Boston. The same church possesses another copy of the Bay

Psalm Book. Selby Kiffer, from Sotheby's special projects department, called it "not simply one of the great icons of book history, it is one of the greatest artefacts of American history". Mr Rubenstein also purchased an original copy of the Magna Carta in 2007 for $US21.3 million in 2007. It is one of only 17 existing copies of the 800-year-old English manuscript.

BC Hydro Rates Going Up 28% Over Five Years

The first of a series of BC Hydro rate increases takes effect in April 2014, adding $8 a month to the average residential power bill. Rate increases of nine per cent next year and six per cent in 2015 are the highest of a series of increases over five years announced Monday by Energy Minister Bill Bennett. The B.C. Utilities Commission will be directed to set rate increases that total up to 28 per cent over the next five years, then determine what rates are needed for the following five years, Bennett said. Commercial rates are going up the same amount. Bennett acknowledged that rate increases are being kept low by using a "rate smoothing" account that defers more than $1 billion of the utility's debt. That account won't begin to be paid down until after 2020. BC Hydro CEO Charles Reid said the latest rate increases are driven mainly by a large increase in capital spending, including seismic refits of old dams at Campbell River and Ruskin, turbine expansions at two Kootenay power dams and other upgrades. BC Hydro's "big build" era of 1973 to 1982 produced rate increases totalling 113 per cent. BC Hydro cited an annual survey by Hydro Quebec that shows BC Hydro customers currently pay the third lowest rates in North America. Montreal and Winnipeg customers pay less, and Seattle and Miami residents pay slightly more. NDP energy critic John Horgan said Bennett avoided the impact of private power purchases on BC Hydro's rate increases. "We're going to have increased debt for the next five years," Horgan said. "They're going to continue to take a dividend from a company that can't afford to pay one, and the consequences for people are going to be higher costs." Bennett said the 10-year plan calls for the government to "wean itself off" dividends from the utility, but the five years of reductions don't start until 2018. The government has instructed BC Hydro to shut down the gas-fired Burrard Thermal generating station in Port Moody by 2016, saving an estimated $14 million a year. The forecast electricity surplus over the 10year plan allows that, but the facility will continue to be staffed for its grid stability function, Reid said.

Ontario Woman Pleads Guilty In Death Of Grandson Left In Hot Car

A woman in Milton, Ont., has been convicted of failing to provide the necessities of life after her grandson died because she forgot him in a sweltering car this summer. Court records show that Leslie MacDonald, 52, pleaded guilty to the crime earlier this month and the judge accepted a recommendation from both the Crown and defence for a suspended sentence plus two years of probation. In an agreed statement of facts she admitted that on June 26 -- a day that reached 30 C -- she was supposed to take her grandson Maximus Huyskens, who was a month shy of his second birthday, to daycare. But after picking up Maximus at her daughter's house, buckling him into his car seat and driving away, she says she didn't stop at the daycare, instead driving to her own house, mistakenly thinking she had already dropped him off. She had worked the previous night so she went to sleep, and even when MacDonald, who is deaf, moved her car in the middle of the day she says she didn't notice the boy in the back of her car, which had heavily tinted windows. Around 5 p.m. that day MacDonald says she went to pick up Maximus at daycare, but when she arrived she was told he never arrived, and it was only when she went back to her car that she discovered her grandson, dead in the back seat. MacDonald says she drove back to the Huyskens' home, where her daughter grabbed Maximus out of the car. Paramedics were called, but according to the agreed statements of facts, by that time there was nothing they could do. Maximus was pronounced dead and an autopsy found he had died from hyperthermia. McDonald was also originally charged with criminal negligence causing death, but that charge was withdrawn. Maximus was laid to rest in emotional service July 3 that drew family, friends and even some strangers, united in their empathy for his parents, Marcus and Tamara, who also have a daughter who was five when Maximus died. Rev. Peter Tuyen Nguyen called the boy's death "so senseless, so wasteful and so inconsistent with all we know." Maximus' parents, who didn't speak at the service where they struggled to contain their emotions, have said their son "shared his magic with everyone he met." "He was a boy who loved to talk about birds in the sky and whales in the water. He was a boy who would always pick a flower for his parents whenever he saw one," they wrote in an obituary notice.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is investigating another homicide in Surrey, this time at 9112 147A St. It is the city's 23rd homicide of the year, an all-time high. Surrey RCMP were called sometime around 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning, responding to reports of a fight inside the home. Police found two men with serious injuries, and both were transported to hospital. One man died, the other remains in critical condition. The injuries were not gunshot related. "Inside that residence there were approximately 30 to 50 individuals," Sgt. Jennifer Pound of IHIT told the

media. "We have spoken with some of them, definitely not all of them, and at this point were looking to identify who those individuals were, and have them come forward and speak with investigators." Pound added police also want to identify three to five men who were seen fleeing the scene around the time of the incident. This is not the first time police have attended the residence. The leader reported in June 2012 that a 33-year-old Vancouver man was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds to his leg and arm after attending a party at the house.

Sears Canada, which currently has 25,000 employees, has also agreed to sell leases back to landlords for hundreds of millions of dollars as it struggles to raise cash and sell off assets, according to media reports.

Any buyers in the market for a deal on a home with eight bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, indoor and outdoor pools and a ravine view have a rare opportunity Tuesday: a Bridle Path estate with all of the above is going up for auction. The property at 40 Park Lane Circle was once listed at $23-million and more recently at a steeply reduced $13.98-million but potential buyers should keep one thing in mind: It needs work. As Jacques Dinel, architect on the project, put it: the interior still needs quite a bit of attention, and some would call [the exterior] finished. We dont. Inspired by the Palace of Versailles, the 27,000 square foot home occupies 2.4 acres in one of Torontos most exclusive neighbourhoods. The original property

included an approximately 15,000 square-foot house, which still stands but [was] extensively renovated, said Barry Cohen of Barry Cohen Homes, the agency handling the sale in conjunction with Concierge Auctions. The renovation began about five years ago, but stopped after a year and a half. The home features a library, billiard room, theatre and grand ballroom, not to mention imported marble and

custom-made moldings and casings. The lavishness is evident from the front door, with 30-foot Corinthian columns that support the exterior canopy. The property backs onto a ravine, features a tennis court and an outdoor pool and is on a fantastic piece of property, said Mr. Dinel. But when asked to choose his favourite part of the home, Mr. Dinel was at a loss.

Thats hard to answer because, well, other than its sheer size, Im not quite sure how to answer that. Right now there is no best feature because its not finished. Right now its just one big empty place. The house is being sold as is, leaving the buyer to provide the finishing touches. Images with the listing include photos of the facade, intricate moldings and bare rooms, but there are also sketches of what the house might look like when complete and furnished. Mr. Dinel thinks it could use a year or so of work, but that depends on who buys it. Everybodys got their own idea of what a good thing is. The auction is set to begin at 4 p.m. and is expected to run until around 6:30 or 7 p.m., according to Mr. Cohen.

Three Men Charged Over Post 9/11 Fire At Hamilton Temple

After 12 years of investigation, Hamilton police announced the arrest of three men Wednesday in a case that had rattled residents of the southern Ontario city in the days after the terror attacks of 9/11. In announcing their progress on the probe into attacks on two places of worship, authorities pushed for the case to be prosecuted as a hate crime. "The fact that the incident took place four days after the tragedy of 9/11 in 2001 and the two places of worship that were targeted by the accused parties were a mosque and a Hindu temple, the Hamilton Police Service will present this case as a hate crime," police said. The incidents changed the city forever in a "profound way" as it focuses on "inclusivity, respect, tolerance and understanding," said Police Chief Glenn De Caire. Authorities had originally focused their investigation on two male suspects but both were later cleared of involvement. This year, police received new information from the public and thorough witness statements and DNA profiling were able to link the accused to the attacks on both the mosque and the temple. Christopher Pollard, 33, Scott Ryan, 33, and Damien Marsh, 34, all of Hamilton, are all charged with arson to property, possession of incendiary material and mischief under $5,000. Flames broke out at the Samaj Temple on Hamilton mountain early on a Saturday morning four days after 9/11. The temple, which at that time served about 800 people, was located near a mosque that had been vandalized hours earlier after receiving a hate message on an answering machine. In the earlier incident, a large front window of the Hamilton Mountain Mosque had been broken, causing less than $5,000 in damage. The fire at the temple, which started at the front doors, engulfed the entire building and caused about $500,000 in damage. No one was injured in the massive blaze which had required 13 fire vehicles and two portable water tanks to fight the flames. The fire marshal's office concluded an accelerant was used to light the fire and classified the incident as arson. At the time, the temple fire was considered the worst act of vandalism against a Canadian house of worship since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States. While 10 mosques and three synagogues in Canada saw windows broken and spray-painted with messages of hate in the backlash following 9/11, all that remained of the temple after the fire was its hand-carved entrance. Police had said at the time that the arsonists likely confused the temple with a mosque. While the loss of the temple devastated Hamilton's Hindu community, it also brought together people of different faiths. Members of just about every church, synagogue, mosque and Sikh gurdwara in the area came out to help the Hindu community raise the funds needed to rebuild the temple. Investigators said Wednesday they believe there are people who know more about the incident and are asking them to contact police.

Our Top 5 Black Friday Consumer Tips

After the US Thanksgiving many consumers start hunting for Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping deals. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Consumer Protection BC are advising consumers to be aware that all deals may not be created equal and to read the fine print. So before you head out the door or buy online for an unbelievable deal, consider the following tips: Tip 1 - Prepare yourself This week many retailers will promote their Black Friday deals both online and through print ads. . Research where the sales are and make a list of your gift priorities to compare prices and plan your day of deals. It's best to ring any ads with you just in case the price is not what you expected. If you are shopping online for Cyber Monday deals, do your homework in advance on the websites you plan on buying from. Tip 2 - Shop with trust. Don't jump at the first deal you see. Research the business - know how long they've been in business, look into their customer service track record, and check them out at www.mbc.bbb.org. When shopping online, make sure the website you shop from is safe. If the site is secure, its web address should start with "https://." You also may see a picture of a small closed lock in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Tip 3 - Know the return and exchange policies. All bets can change for Black Friday deals which means the store policies can change too. Make sure you know what the return and exchange policy is for your Black Friday special and whether a return is even possible. Final sales, a very short return window (like before December 25th) or in-store/ online only credit could leave you with a deal gone wrong. Additionally, when shopping online, look for shipping fees which may be free with purchase, but not free on returns. Tip 4 - Read the fine print When buying online, find out what currency you are paying in, American or Canadian dollars? If you are ordering from the United States you may also have to pay duty on items. If you are shopping for Christmas gifts, check the delivery dates as retailers get very busy this time of year and it could take weeks to receive your item. Finding out all the details helps you make an informed decision. Tip 5 - Be on the lookout for fake social media promotions. Be cautious of online ads or e-mails that look like they come from famous retailers. Often, these ads lead to nonreputable sites that will waste time and money, or may install malicious software. Go directly to an online retailer's website to find their legitimate promotion or social media page. Also, watch out for Facebook surveys that offer free prizes (often new gaming consoles). A red flag? No "free" quiz or survey should ask for your credit card number. Your child has never heard no so many times in her short lifeand she doesn't like it. To top it all off, 2-year-olds don't yet have the language to express feelings, so they resort to pitching fits. You're more controlling (you have to behe's a force of nature now!), but he wants autonomy desperately, which makes life a series of battles. In nonnegotiable cases, carefully restrain your child or move him to another place. Age 4 What's to Love: Your child's personality expresses itself more, so you'll know her triggers and what to do when something does set her off. We've all heard itand we can all forget it. Age 2 can be toughor terrific. Same goes for 1, 3, and 4.! Two-year-olds get all the buzz, but the truth is, tantrums and mayhem can strike at any age, for a variety of reasons. Most toddlers begin testing limits shortly after their first birthday and continue until about age four. So how did the Terrible Twos become such a pop-parenting phenomenon? The term was coined in the 1950s, perhaps because so much pressure was put on families to be detergentcommercial perfect that the moment a child grew out of compliant infancy, moms were freaked out. But modern parents agreeevery kid is different, and every year presents new joys and challenges. Read on for a fresh perspective on each stage. Age 1 What's to Love: They can be wonderfully cuddly. And since many 1-year-olds haven't yet realized the power of the word no to antagonize you, they can often be more compliant than their 2 to 4-year-old sibs. Their distractible nature means you can get them to stop fiddling with the oven knob by giving them a pot and a spoon to bang with. What's Tough About It: Establishing good sleep patterns is still a struggle throughout this year, as you drop the morning nap, lengthen the midday one, and solidify bedtime. All that snooze drama can make for an overtired, cranky kid. In addition, his limited vocabulary makes for misunderstandings. (He says nana. You put him on the phone with Nana Helen. He wanted a banana. Cue meltdown.) How To Make the Most of It: They need about 13 hours of sleep (11 at night and 2 during the day), so try to make it happen. Are We All Brushing Too Hard?

Most of us want clean, healthy teeth, right? Brushing our teeth twice daily is probably the best way we take care of our teeth, in addition to going to the dentist regularly for checkups. Other things that help include flossing, rinsing between meals, and minimizing how much we eat of sugar, junk food, and other sticky foods that can contribute to tooth decay. Even so, there can be too much of a good thing. The question is, then, are we all brushing too hard? In a word, yes. Although we must be thorough when we brush our teeth, and we must do it frequently enough to keep teeth clean (twice a day is the most often recommended frequency), we can indeed brush our teeth too hard. Tooth Sensitivity What happens when you brush too hard? Increased tooth sensitivity. Consider the degree to which enamel erosion happens, especially as we get older. While brushing is necessary, over-brushing or brushing too hard can slowly wear away tooth enamel. The result. Increasingly sensitive teeth, teeth that hurt when exposed to hot or cold foods, for example. The fix to this is to use a soft or extra soft brush, hold the brush at a 45-degree angle, and limit your brushing time to two minutes. In addition, lighten the pressure you put on your toothbrush;

many modern toothbrushes have heads that will flex backward if you apply too much pressure, thus giving good remedial help as to how much pressure you should apply. If you do brush with a manual toothbrush and dont have a pressuresensitive head on the toothbrush, one way to make sure youre not applying too much pressure is to hold the toothbrush gently in your fingers, not clenched in your fist, and use small circular motions when you brush again with an extra soft or at least soft toothbrush. Gum Erosion Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth? They could be bleeding because you have some kind of infection in your gums, also known as gingivitis; if thats the case, you should see your dentist. However, if your gums bleed when you brush your teeth and you dont have an infection, chances are youre brushing them too hard and that can lead to gum erosion. Gum erosion is bad news, because your gums protect your teeth, especially at the roots; exposed roots mean tooth pain and extra sensitivity. Remember, brushing right and with the right frequency (twice a day, gently, with a soft-bristled toothbrush) can help ensure that you have healthy teeth for decades to come.

Many children cannot run as fast as their parents could when they were young, a study of global fitness says. Experts say the work - being presented at the American Heart Association's annual meeting - suggests children's fitness levels may be declining. Researchers analysed data spanning 46 years and involving more than 25 million children in 28 countries. On average, children today run a mile 90 seconds slower than did their counterparts 30 years ago, they said. Obesity Across nations, cardiovascular endurance - gauged by how far children can run in a set time - has dwindled consistently by about 5% every decade, according to the findings. The decline is seen in boys and girls and across all ages from nine to 17 years, and is linked to obesity, with some countries faring worse than others. Lead researcher Dr Grant Tomkinson of the University of South Australia's School of Health Sciences said: "In fact, about 30% to 60% of the declines in endurance running performance can be explained by increases in fat mass." The problem is largely one of Western countries, but some parts of Asia like South Korea, mainland China and Hong Kong are also seeing this phenomenon. Dr Tomkinson said children needed to be inspired and encouraged to do more vigorous exercise.

Many Children 'Slower Runners Than Their Parents Were'

If not, the public health consequences could be dire. Huff and puff "If a young person is generally unfit now, then they are more likely to develop conditions like heart disease later in life," said Dr Tomkinson. To stay healthy, children and young people need to do at least an hour of physical activity - such as walking or cycling to school and running in the playground - every day. It can be done in small chunks rather than one session. Prof Michael Gwitz of the American Heart Association said: "The type of exercise is really important." He says exercise must be something that "makes you sweat" and is "sustained and dynamic" to promote cardiovascular fitness. Simply going to the gym or belonging to a school sports team might not be enough, unless you are moving around a lot. Christopher Allen of the British Heart Foundation, said: "It's well established that being physically inactive in childhood can have serious health implications later in life. "Keeping active can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and the sooner kids start, the better. "By encouraging children to get active, we can help protect their hearts as they grow up. Parents, schools and community groups can all help kids on their way to 60 minutes exercise a day."

Stretching will improve appearance, flexibility, health, and overall performance. First, warm-up for 5-10 minutes at a low intensity (such as the elliptical machine, exercise bike, or treading mill) and stretch the muscles used. If your workout time allows it, a cardiovascular exercise for at least 20 minutes at a faster pace is

Benefits Of Stretching

recommended. Then, a 5-10 minute cool down at low intensity should be completed. Cool down for 5-10 minutes at a low intensity (50-60 per cent of your maximum heart rate). Now that you've warmed up, you should stretch every major muscle group. Why should you stretch? -It builds bigger, better-quality muscles.

-Stretching helps prevent postural problems. -It results in far less muscle-pulling overextension injuries compared to not stretching. -Simple stretches increase range of motion. -It improves muscle appearance. -Flexibility exercises help prevent overuse injuries from

occurring. -Stretching gives you more flexibility, which prevents soreness, allowing for faster recovery and better muscle growth. -Stretching allows for a more active lifestyle later in life. -It invigorates the circulatory, respiratory and neuromuscular systems.

2014 Nissan Rogue

BC Practice Driving Test

For 2014, Nissan introduces the second generation of the vehicle with this name, redone in part to use the new Common Module Family architecture, which is shared with Renault. Nissan will continue to sell the old version of the Rogue (some 650,000 have been produced since 2008), so youll be able to compare the new and old versions side by side come this January. The old version, to be dubbed Rogue Select, will carry a sub-$20,000 base price. That model is assembled in Japan; the new Rogues will be manufactured in Smyrna, Tennessee. A quick body scan of the 2014 Rogue reveals an evolutionary shape with a cleaner front, thanks to swept-back headlights and a more prominent and upscale-looking grille. LED daytime running lights are a tip of the hat to current fashion. The detailing around the greenhouse windows is crisper, the wheel arches show more muscle, and the taillights again wrap around the side but now have more character. The 2014 Rogue provides a larger canvas for these styling details, as its 1.0 inch longer, 1.5 inches wider, and 1.0 inch taller. The wheelbase is stretched by 0.6 inch. Creeping mass is kept in check, however, with elements such as an aluminum hood and a composite rear hatch. Underbody aero work, including a spoiler-type element mounted beneath the muffler, is claimed to reduce drag and increase the distance between fill-ups. Shining from Within Although the exterior changes are minor, the interior takes a big step uptown. For the first time, the Rogue is available in a seven-passenger configuration, although the teensy third-row split-bench seats are rated PG-13. More important, the Rogues second-row seats slide fore-and-aft nine inches, and all seatbacks fold flat save the drivers, enabling a wide range of cargo- and passenger-hauling combinations. Also new on five-seaters is the Divide-N-Hide cargo system that, once learned, does a reasonable job of keeping your stuff in the way back in place and/or hidden. The previous-gen Rogues cabin kit looked lifted from an economy car; however, the new design is anything

but dclass. There are large, easyto-read gauges ahead and a center console that appears integrated from its horizontal vents up top to convenient climate-control switchgear below. Centered between them, depending on options, is a five- or seven-inch color display, the latter of the touch-screen variety. Nissan sticks with its QR25DE engine in the 2014 model, a 2.5-liter twin-cam four rated at 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. The automaker is also remaining faithful to the continuously variable transmission, in the interest of fuel economythe Rogue comes in at 26 mpg city/33 mpg highway with front-wheel drive, 25/32 in all-wheeldrive versions. Those estimates are impressive compared with much of the competition but are only 1 mpg better on the highway than Mazdas CX-5 with a more-enthusiast-friendly sixspeed automatic. Going Rogue The JATCO-supplied CVT makes a good starting point for our discussion of driving impressions, because as we trundled along the highways around Nashville, listening to the engine wind up through the CVT reminded us of how annoying such a transmission can be. There has been some progress in reducing the disconnect between road speed and engine rpm in CVTequipped vehicles, and continued attention to noise isolation has made further advancements in the new Rogue. We suspect most consumers in the market for a Rogue wont know or care about the difference between the CVT and a normal automatic gearbox, which is fair enough. But thats not us. Dynamically, the Rogue is more of a cocoon than a newly sprung butterfly ready to take flight. It is quiet inside, and the ride is comfortable over the varied surfaces on which we drove. Handling is safe and secure but not well defined and certainly not inspiring, including the placid, numb electrically boosted steering. Several interesting tech bits are included, like active ride control, which applies the brakes and adjusts engine torque to reduce head toss over road undulations, especially for passengers in back. Theres also active engine braking, which engages

range from $23,350 to $28,930; the AWDs start at $24,700 to $30,280. Third-row seats are $1190 for the S model and $940 in the SV. The new panoramic sunroof will set you back $1320. There are Premium packages that wrap up much of the cool stuff, like navigation, Around View, and the delightfully named moving object detection that, uh, identifies objects in motion outside the Rogue. For 2014, the cocoon that is the Rogue gets even cocoonier with the addition of electronic nannies. Combined with the newly available third-row seating and more flexible interior, the new Rogue should continue to fight admirably among the compact-crossover ranks, if not roguishly.

Continued From Last Week Marriage and divorce Marriage in Canada Under Canadian law, marriage is a legal agreement between two people and may or may not have a religious significance. Marriage laws apply to everyone who lives in Canada and each person in a marriage is viewed as an equal partner under law. Same-sex and common-law marriages Marriages between people of the same sex are legal in Canada and many people choose to live together in common-law relationships without a formal marriage ceremony. After a period of time, except in the province of Quebec, common-law couples receive a legal status that gives them the same rights and responsibilities as other married couples. Divorce in Canada You do not have to be a Canadian citizen to divorce in Canada. Either partner can apply for a divorce. You can apply for a divorce if: You were legally married in Canada or abroad. You intend to separate from your spouse permanently or have already separated and believe the marriage is over.

Either one or both of you have lived in a Canadian province or territory for at least one year immediately before applying for a divorce. To get a divorce, one of the following situations must apply: You and your spouse have lived apart for one year and believe your marriage is over. Your spouse has committed adultery. Your spouse has been physically or mentally cruel to you. Speak to a lawyer To start a divorce application, people in Canada usually speak to a lawyer who practices family law. The lawyer will tell you how the law protects your rights and applies to your situation. Bilingualism Canada is bilingual Canada has two official languages: English and French. All Government of Canada services and documents are available in these two languages. English is the most common language spoken in all provinces except Quebec. In Quebec, French is the official language. New Brunswick, home to many Frenchspeaking people, is the only officially

You should learn English or French Speaking English or French is extremely important to starting a life in Canada. Knowing one of these languages will help you take part in your new community, find a job, talk to your children in the language they are learning at school and get to know their teachers. To become a Canadian citizen, you must demonstrate your knowledge of English or French. Learn more about having your language skills assessed and about free English or French language training programs in Canada. Laws Laws maintain order Canada is governed by a system of laws. These laws are created by governments that are chosen by the people. Laws in Canada apply to all people, including the police, judges, political leaders and those who work for the government. The main reason Canada has laws is to keep society well ordered, to make sure there is a peaceful way to settle disputes and to express the values and beliefs of Canadian society.

In Canada, you are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Equality under law We call our system of laws the justice system. Everyone in Canada, whether they are a citizen or a permanent resident, is equal under the justice system. In Canada, women can have the same jobs as men and all the same responsibilities. People in Canada are not given better jobs because of their name, the amount of money they have, their social class or their sex. Some important laws that may apply to your family: All children aged six to 16 must receive some form of education. Depending on which part of Canada you live in, you must be either 18 or 19 years old to buy or drink alcohol. It is against the law to use, buy or sell addictive drugs such as marijuana, heroin or cocaine. It is against the law to make any kind of sexual remarks or advances if the other person is not receptive. It is against the law to hit anyone, including your spouse or children, either in the home or in public.

Prabhu Deva And Ekta Kapoor To Work Together

Sunny Leone To Groove For Tamil Film 'Vadacurry'

Indo-Canadian adult film actress Sunny Leone, who has featured in Bollywood films like "Jism 2" and "Shootout at Wadala", has been signed to feature in a special song in upcoming Tamil comedy-thriller "Vadacurry". She will feature with actor Jai in the number. "She's not grooving to an item number. We have roped in for a special song that unfolds as a dream sequence of Jai's character, who dreams of dancing with Sunny in the film. We have tried to make the song colourful, but it is not vulgar," the film's director, Saravanarajan, said. "We narrated the dream sequence to Sunny and she liked it. We are planning to shoot the song in December," he added. Also featuring Swathi Reddy, Kasthuri and RJ Balaji in important roles, "Vadacurry" is being produced by Dayanidhi Azhagiri. Sunny is currently shooting for Kaizad Gustad's "Jackpot".

Yes, the two talented filmmakers will come together for Ektas next film Prabhu Deva is one director who has managed to get cash registers ringing at the box office with most of his films. In fact, the choreographer-director was the one who started the Rs 100 crore club with his Salman Khan starrer Wanted. So we arent surprised that Ekta Kapoor decided to rope in Prabhu Deva to direct a film under her banner. After all, everybody wants to work with a director who can make blockbusters, hai na? While RRajkumar director will helm the project, we hear the movie will star fresh faces. Now thats an interesting combination! Since Ekta and Prabhu Deva come from different genre of cinema, we are curious to see what these two will offer us. We are excited, what about you Bollywoodlifers?

Aishwarya To Move Out Of Bachchan's Mansion

All is not well in the Bachchan household. Report is doing all the rounds that the dedicated Bachchan bahurani and Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is moving out of the Bachchan mansion following a tiff with mother-in-law and veteran actress Jaya Bachchan. Ash is not too happy with Jaya as she keeps a tab on every activity of the actress either it is professional or personal. Jaya Bachchan wants her bahurani to keep her updated on her every professional activity which she does not like. Ash wants to live independently with her daughter Aaradhya and husband Abhishek Bachchan. She has no problem with her father-in-law and megastar Amitabh Bachchan and also with Abhishek as they give her full freedom to lead her life according to her own and give her ample space but constant interference of Jaya

Bachchan irritates her. It is not yet confirmed how far the report is true but it is seen that whenever the saas-bahu duo stepped out, they looked a perfect saas-bahu combination. There seems no dispute between them. Well, recently we spotted Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and daughter Aaradhya Bachchan leaving for a family vacation with Ashs parents and brother, sisterin-law and her nephew. Ever since Aishwarya married to Abhishek, she has been living with her in-laws at Jalsa. During the last karva chauth, she was spotted performing the karva chauth ritual with mother-in-law Jaya Bachchan. It was heard that Ash has been adjusting over those years but now water is going over the head. Well, we hope things settle between them before it turns too ugly.

Actor Saif Ali Khan says he has no objection if his daughter Sara joins the film industry, provided she completes her education. Saif married actress Amrita Singh in 1991 and they have two children daughter Sara and a son. After thirteen years of marriage the couple divorced in 2004. Sara was noticed when she posed on the cover of a magazine alongside mother Amrita and also when she made her ramp debut for designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. There were reports that the teenager was flooded with film offers since then. "She is in America in college in Colombia University. She will have a degree and then she is free to choose whatever she wants to do. She can live and work anywhere in the world, she can come back here and join films, or become lawyer... It is up to her," Saif said. The actor-producer father will support his daughter if she wants to become an actress but she might need to lose some weight, he

feels. "If she chooses to be here (in film industry) then she will have to lose weight. "I think it is better to concentrate on education and have some backing. What if you are not successful as an actor? Then you will be stuck with no job also. Though you get lot of things, there is a lot of pressure.... It is not a normal life as an actor as you don't have time for little things in life. I am ok with it (becoming an actress) but I think college degree is important," he added. The daughter is his weakness, he concedes. "She is my friend and my weakness too," he says. He also keeps giving his children fatherly advise. "One should put priorities in right place. My main thing is to go to college and then figure out what you want next. Other thing is to marry the right person or don't get married. These are things that can affect your life, if you get these things right then rest is fine," he added.

For all the ardent fans of the eternally gorgeous Waheeda Rehman, this news will make you jump with joy. The news is that this ageless wonder will be seen next in Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam 2, which is a sequel to Vishwaroopam, the film which was surrounded by controversy galore. Waheeda, who will be seen playing Kamal's mother (an aging classical dancer), said that she will be playing a wheelchair bound woman. She added that in order to show her past days, Kamal has planned something. And if the reports are to be believed, then that 'something' is Kamal's brainwave to digitally recreate her images by

The World Is Getting To See My Mother Onscreen!

The promo says its not a hate story and its not a love story either but its a love and hate story, how original! Rangrasiya starring the popular actor Sanaya Irani and Ashish Sharma revolves around two people who have very different ideologies in life but still manage to get attracted to each other. The promo shot in Rajasthan tells the story of a village belle Parvati (Sanaya Irani) and Border Security Officer Rudra (Ashish Sharma). While Parvati loves the idea of love and romance, Rudra is irked by the particular emotion itself, yet the two are pulled towards each other by an unknown force. Their love story is aggressive and passionate so they say. The promo showcases Sanaya clad

in a bridal dress looking as gorgeous as ever and Ashish loading his gun to shoot someone. As soon as someone is shot, a group of women come and strip Sanaya off her red bangles. The next we see Ashish aiming the gun at Sanayas head intriguing, no? Frankly, when we saw the trailer it got us a little curious and very intrigued. However, the synopsis of the show is hardly that impressive. The whole concept of love-hate-love is redundant and done to death. But the trailer of Rangrasiya gives us some hope that maybe the makers Saurabh Tiwari and Abhinav Shukla of Nautanki Films have finally come up with something different and original (fingers crossed)

The Besharam actor shared screen space with his parents Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh but Ranbir Kapoor didnt like the world seeing his mother onscreen Frankly, I dont like the fact that the top cop Bulbul Pandey. My dad (Rishi world is getting to see my mother Kapoor) has always been critical about (Neetu Kapoor) onscreen. Shes mine. my work. His father (Raj Kapoor) and Shes soft-spoken in real life but in the grandfather (Prithviraj Kapoor) were film, she played a cunning, over-the- similar in their attitude towards him.

The Bhag Milkha Bhag director will bring together the shining stars of Ram-Leela & Gangs of Wasseypur Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is roping in Ranveer Singh and Manoj Bajpayee for his next venture. The Rang De Basanti director has decided to let close friend, Ganesh Acharya, don the directorial cap. This would be the first outing for the two

Ranveer Singh And Manoj Bajpayee To Come Together

actors together. It is rumored that the movie would have a dance background and Ganesh Acharya being one of the top choreographers of the country has chosen a topic that would be close to his heart. Well we are looking forward to this movie coz we think a movie with such established star cast would definitely be another cash ringer at the box-office.

English Fruit Cake

INGREDIENTS: 3 cups plain cake & pastry flour 1 tsp baking powder 3/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg 2 cups sultana raisins 1 cups mixed peel 1 cup glac cherries, chopped 1/4 cup dried cranberries 3/4 cup raspberry jam 1 cup white sugar 1 cups butter, softened 5 large eggs (at room temperature) METHOD: Preheat the oven to 300F (150C) Line an 8" round springform pan with parchment paper. Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg and mix. (I find that cake and pastry flour always need sifting) Combine the sultanas, mixed peel, cherries, cranberries and jam in a large bowl and mix well to ensure all the fruit is coated. In a large bowl beat the butter with the sugar using an electric mixer at medium speed, until light and fluffy, add the eggs, one at a time, beating each in separately to avoid curdling. (a slight dash of flour will remedy this if it should happen) At low speed, gradually add the flour mixture and beat until well-combined. Stir in the fruit mixture, using a wooden spoon and mix well. Pour the mixture into the baking pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake on a baking sheet on the lowest rack of the oven for at least 2 - 2 hours until a skewer inserted in the cake comes out clean. Cover the top of the cake with a disk of parchment paper if it is browning too much. Allow to cool for at least 30 minutes before removal from the pan. As with most fruit cakes, this cake improves in flavour a couple of days after baking.

Christmas Fruitcake (Eggless)

Ingredients: 1 cup light brown sugar 1 cup fresh seedless raisin 1 cup fresh golden raisin, also known as sultanas 1 cup fresh plump currants 1 cup dried mixed fruit, peel preserved 2 ounces pitted dates, chopped 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 lemon, zest of, only, grated 1 orange, zest of, only, grated 1 1/3 cups boiling water 1/2 lb butter, real, soft, in chunks 2 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons vanilla 2 teaspoons cinnamon, ground 2 teaspoons allspice, ground 2 teaspoons nutmeg, ground 1 teaspoon baking powder 3 cups self-rising flour 2 teaspoons salt 5 tablespoons cooking oil, generous 1/2 cup brandy 2 preserved figs, in syrup, drained, roughly chopped 1 cup maraschino cherries or 1 cup glace cherries, whole 5 ounces pecans, roughly chopped 1/2 cup brandy, extra Directions: 1 Grease and line a large square or round cake tin with baking paper, and grease the paper as well. Heat oven to

375 deg F or 190 deg Celsius. 2 In a large pot mix the first 10 ingredients up to and including the boiling water. 3 Stir well. Bring to boiling, and simmer without a lid for 5 minutes. 4 Remove from heat and cool somewhat. 5 Stir in the butter and baking soda, and stir well to mix. The mixture will fizz a little. 6 When it has cooled down some more, scrape mixture into the bowl of your electric mixture. 7 Using lowest speed, add the next 9 ingredients up to and including the brandy. 8 When everything has been incorporated well, remove the bowl from the mixer. Fold in the chopped figs, whole cherries and roughly chopped nuts. Use a wooden spoon. 9 Spoon the batter into the prepared tin, and smooth the top. 10 Bake 2 hours, BUT lower heat to 350 deg F /180 deg C after the first hour. 11 At the same time lay a double thickness of foil over the cake to prevent scorching. 12 Test with a skewer before removing! 13 Turn out gently on a wire rack and sprinkle over the last ingredient: the extra half cup of booze. 14 When cool, place on waxed paper in an airtight cake tin.

Shortbread

At The Movies The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (PG) *** Rabble Rouser!
By Robert Waldman Bows are drawn and the fate of civilization seems on the line in The Hunger Games : Catching Fire. Known as the second instalment in another popular books to the big screen juggernaut this EOne Entertainment release will appeal to the hordes who flocked to the original. Fit for all ages check it out at any Cineplex Odeon Theatre across B.C. Poor Katniss Everdeen. Buoyant Jennifer Lawrence, hot off her stunning work in Silver Linings Playbook, looks dressed to kill (and then some) as heroine extraordinaire Katniss. Grudges die hard and the head of this futuristic society, colony ruler President Snow has set in motion a new survival of the fittest tournament that's stacked against our poor girl. Canadian acting ace Donald Sutherland (M*A*S*H) superbly plays this smug, pompous ass who will go all out to "break" his perceived nemesis. By hook and by crook our Wonder Woman must fend off an array of death traps to at least get her to the third movie. Blessed with an all star cast including hammy as ever Stanley Tucci (the Devil Wears Prada) as play by play commentator and MC extraordinaire Caesar Fickerman and James Bond alumnus Jeffrey Wright ( Quantum of Solace) as a high tech wizard Catching Fire is a lot of fun for its 2 1/2 hour duration. Oh, and let's not forget poor Katniss' boy problems as three potential suitors come a calling and go a hunting with her. Back as puppy dog romance characters are Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne well delivered by Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. Director Francis Lawrence does a good job showing the sinister side of this society where military rule and conspiracies run roughshod over the populace who just want to survive. Back on board this train to salvation are Woody Harrelson as mentor Haymitch Abernathy and a solid debut by Phillip

Seymour Hoffman as a gamesman with attitude. Surprises galore and exquisite

costuming enhance this epic in the making whose imaginative creativity will leave you yearning for more.

Justin Bieber Told By Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate To Clean Up Hotel Graffiti Pop star Justin Bieber has been told to asking him to do community service
clean up his mess after he graffitied the wall of a hotel on Queensland's Gold Coast. Bieber and his entourage spray-painted a wall at the QT Hotel in Surfers Paradise and posted pictures of their exploits on the internet. Reports say the spray cans were left behind for staff to clean up. Bieber performed in nearby Brisbane the night before. Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has sent a graffiti removal kit to the hotel, but has not spoken directly to Bieber or his entourage. He says the singer needs to right the wrong he has done to Gold Coast. "We would give him the offer to remedy and fix it up first," he said. "If he doesn't fix it up, we will be that normally entails cleaning up. "But he has singing talent being of world class, so I would be just as happy for him to sing at the Mayoral Christmas Carols on December 7 at the Broadwater Parklands." However, the hotel says it welcomes Bieber's artwork. "Whilst unable to comment while Justin Bieber was staying in the resort due to privacy reasons, the property can now state that it was a coup for the hotel to have Justin want to paint a piece of art in appreciation of his stay," a statement read. "This piece of art is now available to be viewed by fans of the artist and we believe that it is a wonderful addition to the colourful Gold Coast arts scene." be the daughter of the former football player, and that Its all going to come out sooner or later. Honey For A Glowing Complexion

Largely considered as a weight loss tool honey is excellent for your skin as well. Find out the wonders of this easily-available home ingredient

Relationships Must-Have Qualities In Men To Be Mr Perfect The 21st century woman is thing like an ideal man or woman. For
independent, fun-loving and most importantly blunt. She says what's on her mind fearing none and is not hassled with what society thinks of her decisions. But when it comes to being with someone, there's a lot that she has on her checklist. A recent research interviewed about 2000 women and the results that surfaced were unbelievable. Women listed that according to them, the ideal man was someone who eats meat, drives an expensive car, rings up his mother twice a week, drinks beer, earns a handsome share a year amongst other qualities. So with women wanting so much from their Mr Perfect, the question that arises is, are women of this century becoming demanding and unreasonable, if not materialistic when it comes to selecting a partner for themselves? While finding a match, are the expectations of a woman extremely high? Women today are not expecting a knight in shining armour to rescue them. They're more in control of their lives and want a companion... someone who respects her for what she has achieved. Gone are the days when women looked for some 'real' qualities in men like chivalry, intelligence, independence, reliability, etc. Sadly the women of today just look for men with the best jobs, the biggest bank accounts or the most fashionable zip codes. Women do have high expectations from men as they themselves have become more achievement-oriented. The paradox is that they also are able to complete the missing aspects when they want to work on a relationship. But women need to be more realistic than materialistic as you need someone who matches your wavelength, emotional and attraction quotient. It is important to bank on a bankable person and not just someone with a good bank balance. We asked some known faces what they think about the study and how'd they describe their ideal man? Zoa: Women today are more independent and don't need to depend on a man for anything, which is why the standard of her ideal man has risen. Now it's more about compatibility as women can take care of themselves. As for me, my ideal man would be someone who I can get along with like a house on fire, someone who's mature and understanding, so I can look up to him every single day and learn something from him. Everything else is relative. Gauri: I don't think there's any such

Honey is known as a natural cleanser which exfoliates your skin to bring out a radiant and glowing complexion. Here are a few advantages-Washing your face with honey once or twice a week will keep your skin soft and also blemish free. -Mix honey and tomatoes together to make a thick paste. Apply this mixture on your skin and keep it for 15-20 minutes. Wash it off and moisturise for a clear skin. -Honey is also known to reduce scars. -It is also known to be one of the best moisturisers for your skin. Apply plain honey for five to 10 minutes on your face and wash it off later with warm water. -Honey does not only keep your face glowing. It is also known to make your hair shiny and strong. Use it as a

conditioner after you've washed your hair. Mix some honey with olive oil and apply this mask on your mane. Leave it for an hour and wash it off with water. It is also known as a miracle to turn back the clock. Honey contains antiinflammatory properties that delay the ageing process. So apply some honey before you go off to bed every night. -To brighten and lighten your skin, mix three spoons of rose water with cup of honey and apply it on your face for approximately 15 minutes. Wash it off with cold water. -Honey and milk work wonders. To ease out fine lines and wrinkles, apply a paste of honey and milk or honey and curd on your skin. Keep it on for some time before you wash off your face with lukewarm water.

Cracked heels: Apart from regular pedicure, it is important to moisturise your feet regularly. Follow this footsoftening routine once a week: Apply a rich moisturizer to your feet, and then soak them in really warm water with a few drops of nourishing oil (such as jojoba). Let them soak for 15-20 minutes, then while still damp slough off dead skin with a pumice. Brittle nails: Washing hands more often in hot water can take toll on your nails. Once a week, rub cuticle oil into and around nails to keep them hydrated.

Easy Solutions To Your Beauty Problems

The right care for your jewellery will make your diamonds shine better and improve the metal's lustre as well. How To Protect Your Jewellery

Also get into the habit of rubbing moisturiser into your cuticles and nails after you wash your hands. Keep a tube of moisturiser next to the kitchen or bathroom sink as a reminder. Dry skin: It's tempting to stand under a long, hot shower when it's cold outside, but resist the urge. Turn down the heat or shorten your shower time and moisturise straight after the shower while your skin is still damp, using a cream that creates a barrier to stop moisture from evaporating. Also apply a cream-based facial mask once a week as a moisture booster.

me, it's important that the man I am with, has values and basic etiquette, is educated, is aware of what's happening around him, respects his family, women and people of all classes. I don't give one bit about how much beer he drinks, if he's sloshed or forgets his mother. Asha: I can't identify with half the things this study stated. For me, the physical appearance hardly matters. It's more about the man's personality and not how much he earns or what he does in his pastime. My ideal man would be someone who I can have a conversation with and who's company I would enjoy. He should be a selfmade man who respects everyone around him. Kritika: Women of today are just more practical. Gone are the days when we used to wait for our 'Prince Charming'. There is no ideal man or woman. I am a little old school. I'll still wait for the chivalrous, self-made, righteous, successful man. But well, if that breed is extinct, the one that eats meat, drives a nice car, calls his mom and knows how to party will do just fine. Sonia: An ideal man from my point of view is one who is secure with himself and has a clear understanding of what is fair and unfair and has the drive to change circumstances. The 'sense of humour' and the expensive car could be an added bonus but I can do without it too. Bani: I don't think it really matters what the man's assets are. I would prefer someone who is understanding, patient and funny. It will be really cool though if he earns as much money as I do, if not more and has a big house. Trust me, it doesn't matter if he even calls his mom or not, his mother should bother about that one. The qualities of the perfect man according to this study are: 1. Six feet tall 2. Muscly, toned and athletic 3. Brown eyes 4. Short dark hair 5. Educated to degree level 6. Earns more than you 7. Earns $80,000 a year 8. Drives an expensive car 9. Jokes around and has a laugh 10. Sensitive when you are upset 11. Tells you he loves you only when he means it 12. Admits it when he looks at other women 13. Wants a family 14. Rings mum regularly 15. Non smoker 16. Dresses smartly and is stylish

Two workers have been killed after a crane collapsed at the stadium which will host the opening game of next year's World Cup, dealing a fresh blow to Brazil's troubled build-up to the tournament. Police in Sao Paulo said the workers at the Arena Corinthians stadium were crushed to death as they scrambled to meet a December 31 deadline set by football's governing body FIFA to complete work at the venue. A third worker was rushed to hospital with injuries after the accident, which brought a shocked response from FIFA president Sepp Blatter. FIFA, which has faced recent scrutiny over worker conditions at underconstruction venues for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, later said safety standards for workers were "a top priority." Brazilian media said the accident happened when a crane lifting a 500ton lattice structure to the top of the stands toppled over, bringing down three metal structures. Firefighters, ambulances and a police helicopter were at the scene, which was cordoned off. The company overseeing the construction work immediately halted activities at the site and said it would investigate. The stadium is one of 12 World Cup venues planned for the tournament,

which has seen Brazil struggle to overhaul its sagging infrastructure in time for the finals. In addition to the opening of the Cup, the arena will host five other games, including the semi-final, while the final will be played in Rio's iconic Maracana stadium next July 13. The reported $US11 billion cost of staging the event has aroused public protests. One site worker, Jose Mario da Silva, 48, told the G1 news portal that the accident happened as most workers were having a lunch break. "I had walked underneath this structure

to go and have lunch. If it had happened at a different moment, many more people could have died - I could have died myself. I just heard a commotion in the distance." Da Silva added that the accident happened as "a crane was lifting the last and heaviest piece of the stadium roof." FIFA's secretary general Jerome Valcke expressed his shock and sadness in a tweet. A FIFA statement added: "The safety of workers is the top priority for FIFA, the LOC and the federal government. We know the safety of all workers

has always been paramount for all the construction companies contracted to build the 12 FIFA World Cup stadiums." FIFA set a strict December 31 deadline for completing their 12 host venues amid fears that Brazil will struggle to be totally ready. Earlier this month, engineering firm Odebrecht, which is in charge of the project, said the Corinthians arena was 94 per cent complete, with the roof's steel structure already mounted and the pitch laid. About 1,500 employees are currently working around the clock to ensure the 68,000-seat stadium is finished on time. But Wednesday's accident is not the first in this huge nation of more than 200 million people. Work was temporarily suspended in the southern city of Curitiba after a labor court ruled that there were various safety breaches and a "serious risk of workers being buried, run over and of collision," as well as being hit by construction material. Two earlier tragedies struck preparations for the tournament - in June 2012 when one constuction worker died in a fall at the new stadium in Brasilia. In March, another worker fell to his death at the Amazonia Arena in Manaus.

Sydney has been confirmed as the host of next season's Pacific Cup. Fiji Football Association president Rajesh Patel said delegates present at the meeting in Auckland over the weekend agreed for the tournament to be played in Australia. "NZ Fiji Football Association Inc has successfully hosted the tournament twice and for 2014, the Australia Fiji Soccer Association (AFSA) has been given the opportunity to host." "We are looking forward to another good tournament next year in Australia. Sydney also qualified for the semifinals this year, and this further

The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) has approved the appointment of Fiji Football Association president Rajesh Patel to its executive committee. Patel replaces former president Dr Shamsud-Din-Sahu Khan and remains in the commitee till the next election which will take place in 2015. Patel said his appointment is a recognition of Fiji FA's hard work and commitment and he would be working with other members of the executive committtee to ensure there is growth

complements their commitment to hold the tournament." "Spectators got the chance to witness top class football last weekend in Auckland and the tournament final was also witnessed by OFC officials including the president David Chung." "Fijian districts proved their worth in the tournament and come 2014, we are hoping to see another impressive and competitive tournament," added Patel. and stability in the region. "Yes, this is an achievement for Fiji FA as our contribution has again been recognised by OFC and I am absolutely honoured and ready for the challenges ahead," he said. "As a member of the committee, I will have the chance to have my say in the decisions that will be passed and I am looking forward to working closely in solidarity with the rest of the committee members." Patel also confirmed that Fiji will be hosting the next OFC Executive meeting in Nadi next February.

THE Nadi soccer side has left its Pacific Cup win behind to focus on the upcoming National Football League competition. The Jetsetters defended the title in Auckland, New Zealand over the weekend after beating Labasa 1-0 in the final. Nadi Football Association president Navneeda Goundar said they would have a low key celebration to mark their win. The Shop N Save-sponsored side won NZ$10,000 ($15,305) at the Pacific Cup. "It was a great season. "We started off well last year and we ended well with the win (in the Pacific Cup) this year," Goundar said. "We will not have any big celebration, just a quiet function for the players and officials who were part of this campaign."

Nadi Focuses On New National League Season

Goundar said the players were given a weeks' break to recover from the hectic season. He said they were looking forward to the tough season ahead of them. "It's a tight schedule. We got the club competition followed by the Champion versus Champions series and then the national league competition. "We haven't really planned for the upcoming season but we are looking forward to it." Goundar thanked Shop N Save for its support and hoped the supermarket giant continues to assist the team throughout the season. "We are grateful to Rattan Deo Babu and his company for coming in the last minute to assist us with the trip to New Zealand. "They are the sponsors for the team this season."

Its joyous occasion for us all today and this win is dedicated to all our supports, said a jubilant Goundar. He said Nadi came on a mission to New Zealand. Its quite the redemption after last month IDC loss. We were ever determined to win the championship. We were not in the camp but we did good training and we were very serious for the Pacific Cup. Captain Ben Aminio Mataniqara thanked his players for the hard work defending the title. We came here to prove a point that is to beat Ba. We did that in the semi -final and then we went on to beat Labasa in the final, said Mataniqara. It was the revenge on Ba but we do respect Ba. Labasa officials Vinesh Kumar said despite his sides loss his players played their hearts out. Congratulation to the Nadi, although we lost we are satisfied with the performance of our team. Well try to come better prepared next year for the tournament.

Fiji FA Wrong Says Rova Nadi Retains Pacific Cup

By Asuad Ali

Former Ba soccer star, Akuila Rova

Akuila Rova says it was only fair for the Fiji Football Association to retain the Lloyd Farebrother trophy after its retirement. The former Ba soccer marksman said the decision by the parent body was unfair. Its unfair on other teams that have won the championship. I believe other district deserve a glimpse of the trophy after its retirement, Rova told Sportsone. Its historic silverware for all to cherish. The district affable however, believes the Ba resting place is also fitting. "Look at what Ba has achieved in soccer over the years", he said. You can imitate but certainly can't duplicate Ba". Rova says Bas record 44 IDC final appearances with 23 wins arguably make them rightful owners of the Lloyd Farebrother Trophy. The Seattle, Washington resident who was the honorary guest during Ba Fan

Clubs IDC, celebration at the Fiji Cultural and Entertainment Center says the the winners of the coveted Lloyd Farebrother trophy will have to live with the decision. The decision was made by FFA and not Ba organization. We can't change the decision, but it should give some incentive to other districts to win the Fiji FACT and the Battle of the Giants trophies when FFA calls for its retirement in the future. Rova becomes the latest Fiji player to join soccer great Ivor Evans and Ronald Chaudhary to vent his displeasure about the trophy retirement decision. Ivor and Chaudhary have both won the IDC, so they know what the feeling is all about the symbolic hardware, he said. Rova, the winner of 4 IDC, 3 BOG, 5 NFL and a Fiji FACT tournament titles said he will remain loyal to Ba soccer through thick and thin.

Nadis Ame Votoniu turned hero for his side as his lone goal against Labasa handed them the back to back Pacific Cup at Bill Mckinly Park in Auckland New Zealand today. Votoniu took full advantage of Babasiga Lions defensive gaffe in the 9th minute mark to balloon the net beyond the reach of Labasa stopper Vereti Dickson. Nadi coach Kamal Swamy saluted his brigades for restoring the lost glory. Well this win is timely one as we tried all our best in the IDC but we lost in the final, so the message was very clear to the boys that when we come to New Zealand we must take back the cup and the boys proved their worth today. The team has done a marvelous job of putting extra effort during the training
